This book explores the complex relationship between urban commons - understood as a repertoire of collective action that fosters a politics of antagonism - and the local state. It critiques the dominant neo-institutionalist and neo-Marxist perspectives for their deterministic and siloed views, as well as the insufficient attention they pay to the municipal scale. The book proposes a more nuanced, urban-based, outcome-oriented approach rooted in assemblage theory.The analysis addresses a central question: can urban commons-local state assemblages benefit the politics of urban commons? The book argues that they can, provided they form rhizomatic assemblages. These allow urban commons to retain their self-governing autonomy, even as they lose some of their material autonomy. Conversely, it shows that assemblages can also take arborescent forms, allowing the local state to undermine the self-governing autonomy of the urban commons.Focusing on Barcelona, the book examines how rhizomatic and arborescent assemblages are constructed, as well as the strategies that urban commons can undertake to build rhizomatic assemblages. In this groundbreaking volume, previously available in editions first distributed and then published by UVA Press, Andrew Dolkart presents a precise and informative biography of a typical tenement house in New York City that became, in 1988, the site for the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. He documents, analyzes, and interprets the architectural and social history of this building at 97 Orchard Street, starting in the 1860s when it was erected, moving on to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when the neighborhood began to change, and concluding as the building became a museum offering a lasting tribute to the legacy of immigrants and their children, who were part of the transformation of New York City and the fabric of everyday American urban life. The third edition updates the history of New York's tenements by adding the story of an African American waiter, Joseph Moore, who lived with his wife and stepdaughter on Laurens Street, now recounted in an exhibition entitled "A Union of Hope." This newly added apartment tour originated with a letter received by the museum's founders from a woman named Gina Manuel in the 1980s, asking them not to forget her Black ancestors, whose "spirits walk those halls and their bones lay in the earth there." Years in the making, the Joseph and Rachel Moore exhibit traces Joseph's history from his free Black community of Belvidere, New Jersey, through his family's migration to New York City, where he lived in the same building as Gina Manuel's great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, and in so doing provides a more fully realized account of the neighborhood, the city, and the range of residents whose stories are woven into the nation's history.

The story of Standen, considered one of the finest examples of Arts and Crafts houses by Philip WebbIn 1891, James Beale, a wealthy, middle-class Unitarian solicitor from Birmingham, commissioned architect Philip Webb to design a holiday home in the Sussex countryside. The Beale family remained sole owners of the property until Helen Beale, James and Margaret Beale's last surviving child, bequeathed the estate to the National Trust in 1972.Although Standen is recognised by architectural historians as a fine and complete example of Philip Webb's Arts and Crafts architecture of the period and is widely celebrated for its Morris & Co. wallpapers and furnishings, little has been written about how the family experienced the house, garden and estate, and the extent to which this shaped Standen's later life under the National Trust.This book fills the void, focusing on the Beales' lived experience and how they collaborated with Philip Webb in the creation of Standen. Chain Stores in the Golden Age of the British High Street
Familiar multiples like Boots, Burton's, Marks & Spencer and Woolworth's - plus a host of smaller chains - forged the character of Britain's high streets in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Multiple retailing was a supremely successful phenomenon, loved by thrifty shoppers but feared by independent competitors. It is explored here through the lens of its shops and stores, which are generously illustrated with archive and modern photographs. These range from the Edwardian grandeur of Boots to the Art Deco splendour of Burton's and the utilitarian post-war buildings of Littlewoods. Smaller chains are not neglected, even if all that survives are weathered signs or mosaic pavements.The time is ripe for a study of chain stores. Britain's retail giants have been under scrutiny since the shocking collapse of Woolworth's in 2009, followed by BHS in 2016. Online shopping was already undermining bricks-and-mortar retailing when the COVID pandemic struck in 2020, accelerating the process. The recent demise of Debenhams, Arcadia, Wilko and others leaves vast empty premises in town centres nationwide. Our high streets are changing, but their legacy of chain-store buildings can play a constructive role in repurposing them for future generations.
The Minimum Dwelling Revisited
This book provides an intellectual history of the modernist "minimum dwelling", exploring how early modernism saw mass housing as a primary vehicle for achieving the utopian transformation of society. It reappraises the often-overlooked 2nd and 3rd CIAM conferences (1929-31), addressing their engagement with the "minimum dwelling" and revealing them both as milestones in the organisation's annals and as seminal moments in the history of interwar modernism.In 1929, an eclectic international group of avant-garde modernist architects, including Ernst May, Mart Stam, Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, met in Frankfurt for the second instalment of the CIAM conferences. They discussed a design programme for cost-effective, good-quality housing, seeking new approaches and processes to maximize quality and functionality while ensuring affordability for the wider population. In exploring the meaning and form of the 'minimum dwelling', they also re-defined dwelling as the hub of a new way of living, proposing a revolutionary multi-scalar approach to urban design based on the concept of the Existenzminimum ('optimally minimal housing').Despite the two conferences falling short of the organizer's expectations, and being overshadowed by later instalments, the participating architects sanctioned a semantic shift from minimum as bare necessity to a very different, aspirational, kind of minimalism - transforming the entire conversation on mass low-cost dwelling in design, social and ethical terms.Split into two parts, The Minimum Dwelling Revisited first takes a genealogical approach to explore the provenance of the concept of "minimum dwelling" prior to the 2nd and 3rd CIAM conferences, it then traces the proceedings of the two conferences themselves. Addressing the origins of the "minimum dwelling" concept but also its legacies, and serving as a corrective to the overemphasis on 4th CIAM conference and the Athens Charter, the book is essential reading for scholars researching urban design during the Interwar period.
Flexible Housing and Its Impact on the Sense of Belonging to the Place
This book explores the relationship between flexibility in residential design and the sense of belonging to a place, recognizing the distinction between mere habitation and a true home. It argues that a lack of adaptability in housing design diminishes quality, satisfaction, and emotional attachment, often leading to instability and premature abandonment. Through a comprehensive literature review, a framework was developed, identifying 21 key components of flexibility and 27 factors influencing place attachment. Using the Delphi technique, expert assessments were conducted and analyzed. Findings indicate that multifunctional spaces, convertible furniture, and adaptable layouts significantly enhance flexibility, while comfort, spatial familiarity, satisfaction, and ownership are critical for fostering belonging. This book further establishes correlations between these factors, leading to the design of a flexible residential complex for low-income communities. By integrating adaptable housing solutions, this book proposes a scalable model to enhance residential quality and strengthen emotional connections between occupants and their living spaces.
The Row House in Washington, DC
With The Row House in Washington, DC, the architectural historian and preservationist Alison Hoagland turns the lucid prose style and keen analytical skill that characterize all her scholarship to the subject of the Washington row house. Row houses have long been an important component of the housing stock of many major American cities, predominantly sheltering the middle classes comprising clerks, tradespeople, and artisans. In Washington, with its plethora of government workers, they are the dominant typology of the historical city. Hoagland identifies six principal row house types--two-room, L-shaped, three-room, English-basement, quadrant, and kitchen-forward--and documents their wide-ranging impact, as sources of income and statements of attainment as well as domiciles for nuclear families or boarders, homeowners or renters, long tenancy or short stays. Through restrictive covenants on some house sales, they also illustrate the pervasive racism that has haunted the city. This topical study demonstrates at once the distinctive character of the Washington row house and the many similarities it shares with row houses in other mid-Atlantic cities. Tree-Building Relationships
Dr Gary Winn, architect and arboriculturist has a professional career straddling built and natural environments. His research utilised a systems thinking approach to architecture that included building and environmental systems, enabling understanding of both environments as one interacting system. He refers to tree-building relationships as arbitecture(R) and considers himself as a practising Arbitect(R). Despite an exiguous amount of published literature investigating the effects of arboricultural knowledge on UK architects' design practice, factors influencing the practice of incorporating trees within their designs have not previously been fully considered. The research presents a contribution toward this issue, through an interpretative, qualitative study, comprising design workshops that investigated the incorporation of arboricultural topics and the resulting features of success. The research found that, acquired arboricultural knowledge and a holistic approach to design solutions have multiple benefits, including deeper engagement with site contexts. Additionally, application of acquired arboricultural hard skills revealed changing attitudes toward tree-building relationships, with conflict emerging as a contributing mechanism. Stakeholders confirmed positive responses to receiving arboricultural knowledge, contextualising trees and practice within a variety of situations, including well-being, sustainability and design opportunities.
