Acoustic Essentials for Architects
Acoustics is a vital but often overlooked part of architecture. It is frequently misunderstood or not even offered in most architectural schools, so many architects do not receive the practical training necessary to maximize their designs. With this education gap in mind, Acoustic Essentials for Architects is the primer architects need to fill the void. Written by an industry veteran with 45 years of hands-on experience in a low-tech, conversational style, it will help architects better understand and visualize the relationship between the physical shapes, textures, and dimensions of their work and how those design decisions impact the qualitative behavior of sound. This peer-reviewed book details the essential terminology and concepts of architectural acoustics, including why it's so important to understand the incredible dimensional range of wavelengths between the lowest and highest audible sounds, the feasibility aspects of applied acoustics, and the trade-offs to blending architecture, acoustics, and pragmatism.
California Coastal
California Coastal style combines the most beautiful and livable aspects of modern, rustic, cottage, and coastal design to showcase the California dream. "Say 'thank you' to the authors of CALIFORNIA COASTAL. With an artist's eye they have seen and given witness to the artist's line in home design. Here are homes where your eye will find grace, your soul will find rest, and on balance, the rest of you will find joy. Ahhh."--Noah benShea, International Best-Selling Author/Philosopher "This book is not just for architecture fans--it's for anyone who's ever dreamed of coastal living that's more about connection to nature than coastal clich矇s. It's a strong example of how good design can enhance, rather than disrupt, one of the world's most iconic coastlines."--SoCal Magazine "In addition to providing valuable insight into how architects conceive their designs, the authors demonstrate the transformative effect that one statement piece can have on a room....Connoisseurs of high-end design will find much to savor."--Publishers Weekly California style comes to full fruition in today's coastal homes. Whether a new build or renovation, the homes are all about easy, comfortable living with the focus on the outdoors. The diverse range of projects are organized into three regions: Northern Coast, Central Coast, and Southern Coast. Architectural styles range from traditional to modern, with added variety in the form of rustic modern, small-format bungalow, and renovations of existing buildings. The California Coast is an iconic landscape, one that has been imprinted on the collective psyche as a land of endless sunshine, pristine beaches, swaying palm trees, epic waves, and sinuous curving roads clinging to dramatic cliffs along a rugged coastline. Scenically rich and teeming with wildlife, California is also known for its laid-back, nature-forward, indoor-outdoor lifestyle. This is epitomized in the architecture and design of eighteen homes featured in the book, which speaks to the coastline's special qualities--as well as its distinct hazards. This selection of extraordinary West Coast homes offers inspiration and ideas and an armchair travel experience.

Reassembling the Social Interior
At the intersection of heritage, design history and contemporary art, this book offers new perspectives on the way historical interiors are encountered by, and viewed and presented for, present-day audiences. Many studies have highlighted the historical significance and meanings embedded in the landscape, architecture, decoration and objects to be found within houses and homes. But what about the social meanings of these spaces? Central to this book is the idea that in reflecting, remaking and reimagining historical interiors, the contributions of artists, designers and craftspeople should be foregrounded in constructing ideas of authenticity, transparency, and materiality in the making process. The chapters present a range of case studies that reflect upon on how historical interiors are remade and reimagined by looking in and out; at how a reassembling of spaces ought to avoid 'a shrinking definition of the social itself' (Latour, 2005). Surveying a range of interior 'types' from a number of historical periods, the book includes contributions from practitioners, scholars and makers. From reimagining rooms of ancient Scottish homes to the interior and exterior worlds of specific historical figures, including Hugh Lane and Beatrix Potter, the book considers how these spaces have powerful significance for contemporary audiences, particularly in ways that are relatable to shared experiences of work, leisure, family, community, power and politics. This book will be of interest to scholars of the history of interiors and collections, museology, archaeology, architectural history, art, and design history, as well as curators and caretakers of historical sites, spaces and objects.

Timeless Mumbai
A sumptuously produced walking tour through historic Mumbai in images and words, featuring the remarkable talents of artist Matt Rota. As Khilen Shah states in his foreword to this remarkable book, modern architecture misses the soulfulness and artistry of the buildings and structures of earlier days, which is why it is all the more important to preserve what we have - in reality and in art. This book is an attempt to preserve in memory some impressions of Mumbai's architectural beauty. It also seeks to correct the image of Mumbai in the minds of both outsiders and those who have lived there, encouraging them to think beyond the city's slums. The book is intended to showcase Mumbai as a city worth seeing and savoring. Artist Matt Rota brings a unique creative style to this endeavor, which perfectly blends the human and cultural element of the city with its architectural beauty. The result is a sumptuous production that would suit a library shelf or a coffee table, whether in India or abroad.
What Student Architects Should Do
As a first year student the challenges of learning how to do architecture can be daunting. Though not prescribing a particular way (there are as many ways to do architecture as there are architects), this Notebook outlines what you should do to cultivate your own distinctive capacity for architectural design.Architecture is a rich and varied subject, a multifaceted and multidimensional skill. Learning to do it is not easy. It has many subtleties. Becoming fluent can take many years. Informed by decades of discussing architecture and its challenges with students, this Notebook will help you lay foundations for a rewarding career as a creative architect. All Simon Unwin's books explore architecture not just as a matter of form and space but in terms of its primal driving force, the universal need and desire to make places for life. Each of these Analysing Architecture Notebooks is devoted to a particular theme in understanding the rich and varied workings of architecture. They can be thought of as addenda to the foundation volume Analysing Architecture: the Universal Language of Place-Making, which first appeared in 1997 and has subsequently been enlarged in four further editions. Examining these extra themes as a series of Notebooks, rather than as additional chapters in future editions, allows greater space for more detailed exploration of a wider variety of examples, whilst avoiding the risk of the original book becoming unwieldy.

Calibrating Coastal Resilience
Calibrating Coastal Resilience presents a conceptual reimagining of place in the era of climate change. The urban terroir framework introduced by the authors offers a holistic, data-driven approach to assessing vulnerabilities in the built environment and in designing cities. Inspired by the hyperlocal relationships between humans, cultural traditions, and urban and natural contexts, the authors develop a place-based, historically sympathetic methodology for guiding climate-related urban policies, designs, and actions in coastal areas. Coastal communities have been among the first to experience the devastating consequences of the climate crisis. Using case studies from South Florida, the book illustrates the unique climate risks for this region, including flooding, hurricane, and sea-level rise scenarios, with a focus on the preservation of historic neighborhoods and buildings and reinforcement of built structures.Drawing from the authors' extensive experience in community planning and historic preservation in cities severely affected by the impacts of climate change, this book introduces practical methods for identifying and aligning preservation goals with resilience needs, including a novel and comprehensive methodology that combines their Storm Surge Building Vulnerability (SSVB) additive model with a Synoptic Survey digital method and associated proticols, and a cultural asset benchmarking system that intersects resilience and preservation objectives. Refined through real-life application and the experience of Southeast Florida preparing for and responding to climate change, these techniques are highly specialized yet designed for ease of implementation.A valuable resource for professionals and students of architecture, urban planning, historic preservation, and local governments globally, Calibrating Coastal Resilience offers communities clear guidelines and actionable steps toward creating place-based resilience planning strategies to safeguard the natural and built landscapes of their region.

Malayan Classicism
Through a broad range of case studies spanning from imperial monuments to rural residences, Malayan Classicism puts forward a fundamentally new understanding of classical architecture in the Asian colonial context. Across Malaysia and Singapore, thousands of historic buildings are richly ornamented with motifs drawn from Ancient Greece and Rome - as plump volutes, lush acanthus leaves, and neat rows of dentils decorate mosques, palaces, government buildings and innumerable terraced shophouses. These classical details jostle with ideas drawn from other architectural traditions from across Asia in a style that is unique to the region. Presenting the first comprehensive account of what was, prior to World War II, Malaya's most widespread architectural style, Malayan Classicism explores how the classical architecture of the British Empire was transmitted, translated, and transformed in the hands of local builders and architects. Addressing a critical gap in the scholarship, this book charts the metamorphosis of an imperial language of power into a local vernacular style, and provides a new way of reading classical architecture in a post-colonial context that will be applicable throughout the Global South.

Ryan W. Kennihan - Dublin
Originally from Chicago, Ryan W. Kennihan has been working in Dublin since 2007 and has taught at various universities. His architecture is reserved, peaceful and elegant. Each building is a little gem, where every detail reflects the architecture. For instance the Vita Family Center in Roscommon assumes the volume and appearance of the surrounding traditional buildings, while varying the details in an astute and subtle way. Text in English and German.
Luca Gazzaniga
Inspired by his experiences and encounters as Co-Editor of the Italian architecture and design magazine Domus, the Lugano-based architect Luca Gazzaniga finds a way of elevating the design to a higher level, even in pragmatic tasks, leading it to a powerful, impressive result - as can be seen in the residential development in Agno (2008). Text in English and German.
Oestreich + Schmid
The conversion of a small residential and studio building in several stages is the highly elaborate transformation of a modest home. The two St. Gallen architects Peter Oestreich and Markus Schmid ultimately gained their reputation through the intelligently conceived triple sports hall in M繹rschwil, as well as the residential and nursing centre in Flawil, which is coherently integrated into the village structure. Text in English and German.
Center and Periphery
A study of Swedish vacation homes designed by Mikael Bergquist. The book collects five vacation homes in Sweden designed by Stockholm-based architect Mikael Bergquist. Realized over more than two decades, they are all located in the Swedish countryside and rooted in the Nordic tradition of timber construction and the simplicity and economy of Sweden's historic farm buildings. Bergquist's great care for detail and choice of materials characterize these houses. They are united also by a close relationship to the surrounding nature, the experience of which is enhanced by the concepts of movement and the placement of passages between the outside and inside. The houses are documented with photographs as well as with plans and sections. In his supplementary essay, Bergquist writes about the special position of working as an architect on the periphery of Europe. He draws a picture of Swedish architecture that is marked by what he calls "fruitful misunderstandings" of current movements, and in which poverty of the rural population has been a major factor in the evolution of the design and construction of dwellings.

All of the practice's works have a poetic character expressed in reduced, radical architecture. Text in English, German and French. Founded in 2003 by Laurent Vuilleumier and Paul Humbert, the architectural practice LVPH (Pampigny/Fribourg) primarily works on projects in Western Switzerland. Its tasks range from an autonomous residential building in Treyvaux supported by 14 columns, to larger projects such as the monolith of a sports hall in Geneva with a colorful anodized, expanded steel fa癟ade. All of the practice's works have a poetic character expressed in reduced, radical architecture. Text in English, German and French.
Five Works - Beat Consoni
Beat Consoni is known well beyond the borders of Switzerland for his finely balanced solitaire buildings. His recent work is always based on an analysis of the urban space and the topography of the site.
Luca Deon
For the Lucerne architect Luca Deon, there lies within each construction task a hidden strategy that he reveals and uses as guidance during the design process. Since 1998, a number of poetic, narrative projects have been created in this way, such as the 2008 ensemble of a building for young people and a sacristan's home in Meggen, which implements the use and specific qualities of the topography in a coherent way. Archigram Ten
- Archigram Ten looks at where architecture is going currently and asks: why? - First new Archigram magazine for 50 years In the 1960s and '70s, Archigram speculated on the nature of architecture in ways that influenced a generation. In an era defined by the space race, the group's exploration of movable structures and modular systems stretched far beyond known technologies or contemporary realities. Archigram magazine became the platform for exploring and sharing many of these themes. Launched in 1961, the magazine ran for 9 1/2 issues until 1974, when Archigram disbanded. Now, after a 50-year pause for thought, Archigram is back. Edited by Peter Cook, with contributions from Archigram founding members Dennis Crompton, David Greene and Michael Webb, and with inputs from numerous contemporary designers, technologists and critics, Archigram Ten takes a wry backward glance and imagines a bold leap forward. It looks at where architecture is going currently and asks: why? Contributors include: Hitoshi Abe, Odile Decq, Elizabeth Diller, Thom Mayne, and Eric Owen Moss.
