Dimensions. Journal of Architectural Knowledge
罈Dimensions. Journal of Architectural Knowledge竄 is an academic journal in, on, and from the discipline of architecture, addressing the constitution of architectural knowledge. It explores methods genuine to the discipline and architectural modes of interdisciplinary methodological adaptions. Processes, and results of knowledge creation and practice are esteemed coequally, with particular attention to the architectural design in practice and research.罈Making Sense: Thinking through Making Architecture竄, Issue 06/2023, investigates how the production of architectural knowledge involves the interaction of the body, the material reality, and the environmental world. Making sense here is defined as the production of architectural knowledge through the physical act of making. The contributors to this issue show how making architecture may be understood as a way of thinking.
Ceramics in Plain Sight
The volume presents the immured glazed vessels (the bacini) located on the facades of numerous churches in the regional unit of Chania. It comprises the first part of a larger project which will gather similar data from the other regions of Crete. The research was undertaken in the framework of the research programme "Immured vessels in Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches in Greece: an electronic corpus". This study highlights an unexplored aspect of the material culture of Crete during the Venetian and Ottoman periods, offering further information about the history of the area and its contacts with other regions from the 13th to the 20th centuries. It also explores facets of this practice surviving into modern times. The ceramics involved here are primarily connected with the monument they adorn, but also touch on the people of western Crete themselves: apart from the detailed archaeological documentation, aspects of ceramic diffusion and immuration practice are unfolded. The text is made up of a detailed catalogue, a map, sketches, drawings and numerous photographs. Although the practice of immuration is also encountered in other regions of the Mediterranean, through the systematic study and the full presentation of the material from the region of Chania, its special diffusion in Crete is highlighted.
The Central Synagogue of Sofia
The Central Synagogue of Sofia was built between 1905 and 1909 as a highly visible and monumental structure in the social, commercial, and religious center of the Bulgarian capital. Having survived the Second World War, it remains a testament to early 20th century Sofia and its majority Sephardic Jewish community. In its architecture, it reflects the city's search for its own modern, European, and national identity, whilst attesting to the struggle of the Sofia Jewish community headed by its chief rabbi Marcus Ehrenpreis to claim its place within the nation building project. In this first in-depth study of the building, Fani Gargova illuminates the history of the Central Synagogue of Sofia and the motivations behind its construction by positioning its appearance and architecture vis-a-vis Central European Reform synagogues and the emerging Bulgarian national style. By looking at the building through the lens of urban planning, building material and technique, liturgy, as well as musical performance, this book significantly expands the common notion of synagogue architecture.

The Louvre and Versailles
In tracing the evolution of the Louvre from fortress to palace and of Versailles from hunting domain to dynastic capital, Dr Tadgell's detailed architectural analysis of many projects - external and internal, realised and unrealised - is set in the context of the development of the medieval monarchy towards absolutism, of the development of the medieval ch璽teau towards precedents for the seat of absolutism, and of the effect of the French monarchy's financial incontinence on the realisation of royal building ambitions. In particular, Tadgell challenges received opinion on the introduction of Hispano-Burgundian court etiquette to French palace design, relates the court front of Lescot's Renaissance Louvre to the iconography of apotheosis, revises the current ordering of Fran癟ois Mansart's designs for the Louvre and reassesses the subsequent contribution of Claude Perrault to the completion of the east front in respect for the opinion of 17th and 18th century commentators. After surveying the various phases of work for Louis XIV at Versailles, he traces the evolution of Ange-Jacques Gabriel's grand projet for rebuilding the town side of the palace for Louis XV, noting the influence of Bernini on the definitive phase, and he masters the intricacies of the incessant changes to the royal apartments which inhibited rebuilding. Finally, the book looks at the influence of the great French palaces on those seeking to emulate their ambition, from Stockholm in the late-17th century to the deliriously opulent late-19th century palace of Ludwig II of Bavaria at Herrenchiemsee. A wealth of illustrative material and supporting documents bring this comprehensive and authoritative text to life.
Franklin D. Israel
This book examines the life and legacy of Franklin D. Israel, an influential member of the Los Angeles school of architects. Acclaimed Los Angeles architect Franklin D. Israel (1945-1996) created innovative residential projects and office interiors that made him one of the most talked-about designers of his generation. In this vivid account, architectural historian Todd Gannon draws on archival resources, analyses of Israel's buildings, and recent interviews with the architect's colleagues, clients, and contemporaries, including Frank Gehry, Thom Mayne, and Robert A. M. Stern. Gannon traces Israel's development from his early years and career on the East Coast to his formative world travels and residence at the American Academy in Rome. The author guides readers through the Los Angeles architectural context, Israel's influential teaching at UCLA, his dalliance with Hollywood, and the personal motivations behind his architecture and design work--all aspects of an influential career that was cut short by his death from AIDS-related complications at the age of fifty. Franklin D. Israel is a compelling work of architectural history and biography, chronicling one gay man's engagement with the largely heteronormative world of American architectural culture. It explores the achievement of this central figure in the still largely unstudied history of late twentieth-century avant-garde Los Angeles architecture.

Modern Architecture of Cura癟ao
Modernism is an important architectural style in which technological innovations are used for social purposes. The Cura癟ao chapter of the nonprofit organization DoCoMoMo (Documentation and Conservation of the Modern Movement), dedicated to documenting and conserving modernist buildings, sites, and neighborhoods, was founded in September 2008. But unlike in the United States, this architectural movement is relatively unknown in Cura癟ao. This book describes the twenty-five most important buildings in this style on the island. In doing so, the author aims to give international exposure to modernist structures in Cura癟ao and increase local appreciation and awareness of this architectural style. One of the most important architects who worked in this style in Cura癟ao was Ben Smit. He produced an impressive record of buildings on the island up to 1971 and became known for a natural, tropical style of design for both private dwellings and commercial buildings. Smit often used vertical sun-breakers, the brise-soleil popularized by Le Corbusier, to prevent direct sunlight into the interior.

A History of Collective Living
The book tells the story of communal living from about 1850 until today. Three motives of sharing - the economic, political and social intention - divide the residential objects, which are investigated in a historical analysis and allocated to nine development phases. The author investigates and compares different forms of housing and the way they developed from their origins until today; she illustrates how everyday shared living and the degrees of privacy in housing are practiced in Europe. Owing to its comprehensive documentation, the analysis of typologies, layout plans, and user and expert interviews, the book can also be considered to be a lexicon or handbook on communal living. A detailed overview that is unique in this form. The out-of-print first edition is now published in an updated new edition with new design and layout. Design and the Vernacular
How have Indigenous building traditions shaped modern building practices? What can the study of vernacular architecture contribute to debates about sustainable development? How has vernacular architecture been used to argue for postcolonial modernisation - and what has been the effect on heritage and conservation? Design and the Vernacular explores how the vernacular architecture of Australasia and Oceania intersects with modernity and globalization - challenging assumptions about vernacular architecture being anachronistic and static, and instead demonstrating how it can shape contemporary architecture, nation building and cultural identities. Sixteen chapters by architects, designers, and theorists, including Indigenous writers, explore different facets of vernacular architecture amid the context of rapid political, economic, technological, social and environmental changes. The result offers valuable lessons and case studies for architects across the globe, and for anyone interested in how the vernacular can inform contemporary urban planning and architectural design.

Rem Koolhaas as Scriptwriter
This book is the first survey of a new field in architecture theory: script writing. Rem Koolhaas as Scriptwriter explores the intersection of architecture, film, and text using the example of the working method of scriptwriter, Rem Koolhaas, and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA).This book argues that Koolhaas formulates his approach to architecture on the basis of the "written sketch" or script, and questions its transformations into built environment in the oeuvre of OMA. Divided into two parts, the first part is a theoretical outline that explores the notion of scriptwriting in film. It provides in-depth insights into the definition and historical evolution of the script - as a blueprint, Hollywood script, avant-garde script, storyboard, the relation to auteur theory, and the difference between the script and scenario. It surveys the first original script for the Exodus, of the Voluntary Prisoners of Architecture. The second part offers a unique perspective on the urban development of West Berlin, in which Koolhaas created a metropolitan script, or blueprint, that spans the period 1971-1989, from his first visit to Berlin to the fall of the Berlin Wall. This book will be of interest to researchers and students of architectural theory, urban history, and film studies.
Informality Through Sustainability
Informality through Sustainability explores the phenomenon of informality within urban settlements and aims to unravel the subtle links between informal settlements and sustainability.Penetrating its global profile and considering urban informality through an understanding of local implications, the authors collectively reveal specific correlations between sites and their local inhabitants. The book opposes simplistic calls to legalise informal settlements or to view them as 'problems' to be solved. It comes at a time when common notions of 'informality' are being increasingly challenged. In 25 chapters, the book presents contributions from well-known scholars and practitioners whose theoretical or practical work addresses informality and sustainability at various levels, from city planning and urban design to public space and architectural education. Whilst previous studies on informal settlements have mainly focused on cases in developing countries, approaching the topic through social, cultural and material dimensions, the book explores the concept across a range of contexts, including former Communist countries and those in the so-called Global North. Contributions also explore understandings of informality at various scalar levels - region, precinct, neighbourhood and individual building. Thus, this work helps reposition informality as a relational concept at various scales of urbanisation. This book will be of great benefit to planners, architects, researchers and policymakers interested in the interplay between informality and sustainability.
Sponge Park
Introduces DLANDstudio's pioneering and award-winning Sponge Park concept for the regeneration of the notorious Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. Before there were sponge cities, there were sponge parks. Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal is the site of the Sponge Park master plan and pilot projects, instigating a widespread movement toward greater urban permeability. Designed by Susannah Drake and her former Brooklyn-based firm DLANDstudio Architecture + Landscape Architecture, their project was completed in 2016 and recognized with National AIA and ASLA Urban Design Awards and the inaugural Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Award for Climate Action in 2020. The Gowanus Canal was the channelized reminder of a former freshwater creek and tidal marsh. Industrial use in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries left a legacy of heavy pollution in the soil and water. Historic industrial buildings lined the canal. Residential neighborhoods had limited opportunities to access the water's edge. Sponge Park was conceived as a series of public urban waterfront spaces that slow, absorb, and filter dirty surface water runoff to clean contaminated canal water, reduce combined sewer overflow, and add open space in a park-starved neighborhood. Revealing the form, distribution, and size of natural ecological patterns in relation to the shape and patterns of infrastructure, neighborhoods, and political jurisdictions was a key component of the design. This book introduces the Sponge Park in great detail with photos, illustrations, plans, and diagrams. It demonstrates the concept's potential as a component of a larger vision for a new paradigm of coastal urbanism, upland adaptation, and right-of-way design in the twenty-first century. Sponge parks proactively address how to manage stormwater runoff from increasingly severe storm events and reduce detrimental impacts. It is a must-read for design students, architects, and academics as well as for elected officials, policymakers, and community activists.

The Shell Builders
Beaufort, South Carolina, is well known for its historical architecture, but perhaps none is quite as remarkable as those edifices formed by tabby, sometimes called coastal concrete, comprising a mixture of lime, sand, water, and oyster shells. Tabby itself has a storied history stretching back to Iberian, Caribbean, Spanish American, and even African roots--brought to the United States by adventurers, merchants, military engineers, planters, and the enslaved.Tabby has been preserved most abundantly in the Beaufort area and its outlying islands, (and along the Sea Islands all the way to Florida as well) with Fort Frederick in 1734 having the earliest example of a diverse group of structures, which included town houses, seawalls, planters' homes, barns, agricultural buildings, and slave quarters. Tabby's insulating properties are excellent protection from long, hot, humid, and sometimes deadly summers; and on the islands, particularly, wealthy plantation owners built grand houses for themselves and improved dwellings for enslaved workers that after two hundred-plus years still stand today. An extraordinarily hardy material, tabby has a history akin to some of the world's oldest building techniques and is referred to as "rammed earth," as well as " tapia" in Spanish, "pis矇 de terre" in French, and "hangtu" in Chinese. The form that tabby construction took along the Sea Islands, however, was born of necessity. Here stone and brick were rare and expensive, but the oyster shells that were used as the source for the tabby's lime base were plentiful. Today these bits of shell, often visible in the walls and forms constructed long ago, give tabby its unique and iconic appearance.Colin Brooker, architect and expert on historic restoration, has not only made an exhaustive foray into local tabby architecture and heritage; he also has made a multinational tour as well in search of tabby origins, evolution, and diffusion from the Bahamas to Morocco to Andalusia, which can be traced back as far as the tenth century. Brooker has spent more than thirty years investigating the origins of tabby, its chemistry, its engineering, and its limitations. The Shell Builders lays out a sweeping, in-depth, and fascinating investigative journey--at once archaeological, sociological, and historical--into the ways prior inhabitants used and shaped their environment in order to house and protect themselves, leaving behind an architectural legacy that is both mysterious and beautiful.Lawrence S. Rowland, a distinguished professor emeritus of history at the University of South Carolina Beaufort and past president of the South Carolina Historical Society, provides a foreword.

The Architectural Image and Early Modern Science
The Architectural Image and Early Modern Science: Wendel Dietterlin and the Rise of Empirical Investigation explores how architectural media came to propel scientific discourse between the eras of D羹rer and of Rubens. It is also the first English-language book to feature the polymathic, eccentric, and long-misunderstood artist Wendel Dietterlin (c. 1550-1599). Here, Elizabeth J. Petcu reveals how architectural paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints became hotbeds of early modern empiricism, the idea that knowledge derives from sensory experience. She demonstrates how Dietterlin's empirical imagery of architecture came into dialogue with the image-making practices of early modern scientists, a rapport that foreshadowed the intimate relationships between architecture and science today. Petcu's astute insights offer historians of art, science, and architecture a new framework for understanding the role of architectural images in the foundations of modern science. She also provides a coherent narrative regarding the interplay between early modern art, architecture, and science as a catalyst for modern empirical philosophy.

The Importance of Visual Sustainability in Urban Design Strategy
With most of us now living in cities, the importance of visual sustainability in urban design strategy shouldn't be underestimated. This research addresses interactions in urban environments-when defined as interaction types and used as a metric-because they provide an effective strategy for understanding the relationship between urban heterogeneity and how we're visually sustained as we engage with our surroundings. Interaction type analysis is key to bridging the gap in knowledge. It lies at the heart of the challenges posed by levels of subjectivity in how we see, what we see, and the difficulty in measuring visual sustainability. The main finding of this study is the suggestion that visual interaction types are the building blocks of visual sustainability when considered in the context of urban design strategy. What difference this makes depends on the level of analysis-whether student or practitioner, commercially oriented, in terms of spatial health and well-being, or at a more abstract level, in personal development and growth. But the overarching consideration is that interaction types are able to reveal where the real city lies-and by real city is meant the city we pay attention to.
