The construction waste produced is immense but its removal or abatement is completely ignored by the state. Who will deal with all this waste? Enter the reclaimers (癟ıkmacıs), an informal network of building salvagers, who have stepped in to create a new form of assemblage that fills this gap. When the editors of this journal's predecessor, Modulus, chose "Craft and Architecture" as the theme of the 22nd issue (1993), they had little doubt as to how the former related to the latter. To them, craft, deriving from Vitruvius' definition, is a combination of industrial wisdom, a knowledge of buildings, materials, and construction, and a cultural intelligence, coming from a critical engagement with the myths of construction and the ability to further the idea of homo faber, or the transformation of the environment through tools and making. Thirty years later, this editorial board of LUNCH 17 certainly does not have as sturdy a grasp on what "craft" means to architecture. While construction and labor is central to our work, it is rarely the center of the conversation, let alone described as craft. As it's been delivered to us in studio critiques and reviews, craft has been nothing more than a weak compliment to models and drawings that are pleasing to the eye. But where others may bemoan a "loss" of craft within the profession, we see a sea-change in the relationship between design and its tools. Our call was an open invitation for practitioners, scholars, and students to see craft beyond traditional artisanal labor and the production of objects, instead seeing the world as constructed from the crafty interactions between culture and technology. By giving space, including space on the page to Craft, we hope that readers continue to grapple with what it means to reinterpret rather than rewrite, to regenerate rather than restore.

Thermal comfort is a term of grave concern when it comes to conservation in Meliponiculture. Often enough, enthusiastic new beekeepers are not overly worried about heat dissipation, especially during the summers on the fringes of the tropics.Heat waves in the tropics may leave beekeepers anxious about the stability of the colony's health and population growth, Chances are the existing colonies may see the population dwindling rather than growing at any rate. We also look at earth tremors if not earthquakes in the "ring of fire" zone in The Wallacea regions. Flooding threats in South East Asia and Typhoons in the Oceanic Philippines are very troubling. Addressing these disastrous events and the potential threats is one of the aims of this book. We have scoured the region and looked at how different cultures attempt to mitigate the drastic and extreme weather in their respective regions. Out of these examples and data collection, we provide a gallery of designs on relevant bee housing that may have an impact on such mitigation that may apply to the relevant type of disaster frequently faced in each region.

The Architecture of James Gamble Rogers II in Winter Park, Florida
This well-illustrated book illuminates the life and career of one of Florida's premier architects, whose elegant homes and design aesthetic shaped the architectural character of Winter Park and influenced urban development throughout central Florida. James Gamble Rogers II (1901-1990) created homes known for their human scale and proportion and for their suitability to the environment. This work highlights twelve of these residences designed for Winter Park, the beautiful small city adjacent to Orlando and the headquarters of the Rogers family architecture firm, Rogers, Lovelock, and Fritz, which exists today under the leadership of Rogers' son. Ingeniously meeting the special needs of Florida's climate--heat, humidity, termite control, and air circulation--the residences incorporate details from a variety of historical styles, including eccletic and authentic features that emulate vernacular Spanish farmhouses and villas. The book includes critiques of each design and its evolution, particulars about the site, and stories about the lives and tastes of the clients--men and women of wealth and status who influenced the heady era of the Florida land boom in the 1920s and 1930s.
