The Castle, located in the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago at 10244 S. Longwood Drive, was built in 1886 and 1887. It looks like a real medieval castle. Modern Architecture in Mexico City
Mexico City became one of the centers of architectural modernism in the Americas in the first half of the twentieth century. Invigorated by insights drawn from the first published histories of Mexican colonial architecture, which suggested that Mexico possessed a distinctive architecture and culture, beginning in the 1920s a new generation of architects created profoundly visual modern buildings intended to convey Mexico's unique cultural character. By midcentury these architects and their students had rewritten the country's architectural history and transformed the capital into a metropolis where new buildings that evoked pre-conquest, colonial, and International Style architecture coexisted. Through an exploration of schools, a university campus, a government ministry, a workers' park, and houses for Diego Rivera and Luis Barragan, Kathryn O'Rourke offers a new interpretation of modern architecture in the Mexican capital, showing close links between design, evolving understandings of national architectural history, folk art, and social reform. In The Village
Anthony Bailey's intimate look at life in Stonington borough made waves when it was published. First appearing in 1971 as a serialized version in the New Yorker, a hard-cover version was published soon thereafter. In 1992, a second paperback edition was printed locally and soon sold out. Copies are still passed hand to hand and quickly scooped up on eBay or at the Niantic Book Barn. Almost considered a rite of passage for newcomers to this small town, In the Village was not universally embraced by all of Stonington's longstanding residents. Some felt his narrative was too personal and were upset to see their characters so sharply drawn, while others thought it was perfect and were disappointed not to find themselves delineated in its pages. In 2020, Bailey gave his blessing to a third "anniversary" edition. Bailey had recently undergone a hip surgery and while recovering he would soon fall ill with what was then a new coronavirus. Geoffrey Little, a locally-based consultant and writer who specializes in technology, wellness, and education, carefully stewarded this project forward with Bailey's four daughters. As executors of his estate, they felt strongly that this project should continue. Little collaborated on the project with Stuart Vyse, a member of the board of the Stonington Historical Society and a retired professor of Psychology, who worked text and photographs into a new layout with book designer, Susan Lindberg. Bailey was much admired by Vyse and his most recent book, Stonington's Steamboat Hotel, was dedicated to Bailey. This anniversary edition includes the full text of the original as well as Bailey's introduction to the 1992 edition and also benefits from the addition of select photographs by Rollie McKenna from the archives of the Stonington Historical Society. The passage of time and the passing of some of the key characters does much to soften the edges of some of these observations but it also sharpens the emotion and the intent of Bailey's writing. There is much to be nostalgic for and there is no doubt that this was meant as an homage to a village now gone. In the Village now serves as a snapshot in time and illustrates in detail some of those colorful characters who otherwise would otherwise be lost in the spare and formal language of obituaries. According to Stuart Vyse, "Although Stonington borough has changed since Anthony Bailey's In the Village was first published in 1971, much remains the same. Bailey's central message-that there is great value in living in small communities-is as true today as it was then, and arguably, it is a message that we need now more than ever before. The Life and Death of Buffalo’s Great Northern Grain Elevator
A stunning visual memorial to Buffalo's architectural and industrial history.Archer Daniels Midland got lucky the night of December 11, 2021: a fierce winter wind took out a third of the brick wall of Buffalo's Great Northern Grain Elevator. ADM had wanted to demolish the building since 1993, but each of its demolition requests to the city had been blocked. Six days after the storm, with no public hearings, the building was condemned. A unique piece of Buffalo's economic and global architectural history was gone.Grain elevators are part of Buffalo's-and the nation's-architectural heritage. Unlike earlier wooden structures, the Great Northern was made of steel; it was fireproof. The steel bins kept the grain dry and the rats out. The entire steel structure was riveted and bolted into a single entity. The Great Northern couldn't burn down or blow up; it couldn't be knocked down, and it was incapable of falling down. When the Great Northern was completed seven months after the shovels broke ground, it was the largest grain elevator in the world. It was built to last, and last it did until the eight-month task of tearing it apart began on September 16, 2022.Photographer and activist Bruce Jackson documents the story of this key architectural landmark through text, documents, and his own photographs taken over a period of several decades to tell this tragic story that will appeal to anyone interested in the history and preservation of America's industrial culture.
