Methodology of Interior Design Administration
MIDA was created for many reasons, all of which are purely practical. As the chapters unfold I have tried to demonstrate the purpose and value of every document, by relating practical examples, rather, true events that occurred. The MIDA System is designed to cover all eventualities to protect the Designer and the Client, but as with all systems, it will not work unless it is used fully, by all recipients and originators. Any weak link in a chain may cause a failure. A project is a chain of events; and we, as Designers must operate that chain, if it breaks, someone loses. If the system is used by the Designer, at least he will not lose. There are fundamental reasons behind the style and design of the system and model: Designers picture things in their minds, a list of forms and documents would put most Designers to sleep.Designers understand processes, but can relate to them more easily, if they can visual-ize these processes as a methodology. Therefore, a graphic model crystallizes the logical process. When using methodology, it is normal to list the criteria in levels of importance or indeed relevance. MIDA, using primary, secondary and tertiary platforms automatically places the information required or provided in the correct place.Designers understand colour and the relationship between: Primary colours - Relating to primary platforms, Secondary colours - Relating to secondary platforms and Tertiary colours - Relating to tertiary platformsThe concept of the model, as a picture or diagram of the project, with the colours representing the importance of the milestones or stages, is simple and logical to a Designer. The system becomes a living thing on a project-by-project basis; it is an instant overall view of the project to date, in a graphic living form, not simply a list of documents. With the advancement in technology and computer systems, as the MIDA System develops into a computer package, it is not inconceivable to imagine 3D images emerging from the plat-forms almost as a video game, appealing more and more to the new generation of computer (expert) designers. The system described in this handbook is, I believe, of great value to practicing interior designers and students of interior design. But the electronic version of MIDA will be the "REAL GAME"It is important to note the following. The book utilizes a hospitality format for all examples of documentation, simply because "Hospitality" projects can involve a large number of active participants. This does not pre-suppose other specialties would not have an equally large number of participants. However, it is understood and accepted that Designers may well be involved or specialize inResidentialCorporate OfficesFinancial InstitutionsHealth careRetail, Stand alone or Retail MallsEntertainment, Movie theaters, theatres, Concert Halls etc.Educational establishments, Places of worshipTherefore, the computer application will be available in a format for all specialties of Interior Design, in due course.

Digitalstructures
digitalSTRUCTURES: Data and Urban Strategies of the Civic Future engages with digital property and data infrastructures, and explores new modes and impacts of data collection affecting architecture and urban infrastructure. Digital currencies (cryptocurrencies) and digital property require large amounts of land, resources, and data centers and infrastructures to store these "supplies". There is a larger architectural and urban infrastructural challenge and urgency on how these various kinds of digital exchanges are mediated, to limit the detrimental use of our everyday resources. Using a mixed-media approach, this book couples a novel exploration of XR (mixed-reality) and AR (augmented reality) into several parts of the book. To prolong the shelf-life of emergent data and case-studies on the topic, the book is complemented with an open-access digital platform for readers to access video interviews with the industry experts, diagrammatic mapping and graphical cartography, and 3D artifacts that shows how data interacts with phygital properties. Authored by Wendy W Fok, who has been researching and writing on the topic for over a decade, this book includes a foreword by Jesse Reiser and Julian Harake; interviews with and contributions by Greg Lynn, Saskia Sassen, Minerva Tantoco, Lydia Kallipoliti, Michael Young and Kutan Ayata, Andrew Witt, Amber Bartosh, Mik Nayeem, with an ongoing list of interactive interviews.
Design for Life
This monograph explores the work of Holly & Smith Architects (H/S) over the past 40 years. This compilation of some of the firm's most recent work demonstrates the designer's deep respect for the climate, vernacular, culture/context, topography, and the natural environment of the deep South. Significant climate and environmental factors have informed the H/S design philosophy. The culture of south Louisiana has also greatly influenced the design solutions by respecting the vernacular and context of the semi-rural communities. The constraints of clients of modest means are used as an opportunity to utilize ordinary materials and methods uniquely. Sustainability methods, such as using closely sourced materials indigenous to the sites and focusing on energy conservation through rigorous site analysis and building orientation, are evident in the designs. Several projects presented address sustainability through the adaptive reuse of historic structures. By utilizing historic tax incentives, these examples maintain historic integrity of the fa癟ade while repurposing the interiors, bringing often overlooked and neglected cultural gems back into commerce. These timeless designs fit seamlessly into the existing architectural inventory of the deep South while utilizing current technologies, materials, and construction methodologies to address the needs of the clients, users, and communities.

The Wayfinding Process for People with Visual Impairments
This study aimed to analyse the General Library of UNESP / Bauru - SP, where the physical structure serves only people without visual impairments, in order to make a restructuring to adapt the physical space to the entire faculty and student body, including the visually impaired present. This research was carried out based on questionnaires that were applied to people with some type of visual impairment and / or people who deal daily with these. The themes involved: the greatest difficulties of mobility and localisation, environment and surroundings in the library, so that it was possible to identify the problems and readjust the environment to ensure inclusion. As for the structure, it was necessary to design spaces adapted to the needs of visually impaired users, respecting their sensory abilities and limitations. To this end, spatial planning and communication were important aspects to facilitate the wayfinding process.

Inscription of Tiglath-Pileser I, King of Assyria
The beginning of Tiglath-Pileser's I reign, laid heavy involvement in military campaigns, as suggested from translated texts from the Middle Assyrian period. The texts were believed to be "justification of war." Although little literary text is available from the time of Tiglath-Pieser I, there is evidence to show that the reign of Tiglath-Pileser I inspired the act of recording information, including that of his military campaigns. Toward the end of Tiglath-Pileser's reign literary texts took the form of "summary texts" which served as a vessel for as much information about his reign as possible, with the intent to be handed down to his successor.
Urban Greening Techniques
What is the best way to design with greenery? What are the benefits of selecting one species of tree over another, and placing it at Point A instead of Point B? Slaves Waiting for Sale
The impetus for the first edition was violent actions---the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017, which was touched off by discussions about removing a statue to Robert E. Lee, and resulted in the death of Heather Heyer. Since the publication of the first edition, both history and democracy are being threatened in ways that we were only seeing small glimpses of in 2018. Today, attempts to elevate new or more complex history has been met with vilification. States across the country have passed legislation to ban critical race theory from being taught in public schools and are seeking ways to limit what teachers are allowed to teach about slavery and race in the United States. These threats are unlikely to abate. As such, our responsibility as historians, community leaders, museum professionals, and citizens is to redouble our efforts to share human stories in relatable ways and to exercise our rights and wield our power whenever and however we can. The revised edition tackles the great issues of our time against the backdrop of monument culture and historical truth.

Cave Bureau
The first publication on the Kenyan collective exploring colonial erasure and the future of architecture in the age of the AnthropoceneThis fifth volume in Lars M羹ller's Architect's Studio series is dedicated to the Nairobi-based architects Cave_bureau. This acclaimed collective of architects and researchers--the first Kenyan firm to appear at the Venice Architecture Biennale, in 2021--explores the synergy between architecture, urbanism and nature, and curates performative events of resistance within caves along the Great Rift Valley in East Africa. The cave, as physical space and as metaphor, is seen by the collective as a provocation to test the limits of contemporary architecture. Here, Cave_bureau's Stella Mutegi and Kabage Karanja describe eight of their projects. Stunning photography is accompanied by essays posing questions about the future of architecture in the age of the Anthropocene, the effects of colonial extraction and erasure on African architecture, as well as the specificity of each continent and each geographic space.
Wisdom of The Property Crowd
It has never been easier to follow people who inspire you, see their work and learn from them. Following their work, reading and viewing their output is, in my view, a form of virtual mentoring. However, it can still be difficult to identify people to virtually mentor and inspire you.For the last 5 years together with my podcast host Robert Bean, I have had the privilege of interviewing on the Edifice Complex Podcast, some of the most inspiring, intelligent and accomplished professionals in the Built Environment space. For me it has been a humbling learning experience. It has made me realize my frustration with the property industry's ability to "hide in plain sight" the best, most innovative and experienced practitioners. It also had me thinking about why they are not talking to and inspiring college students and young professionals. Where is the Elon Musk of the built environment? The purpose of this book is to distill the critical thinking, insight and ideas of some of the property industries most, in my opinion, accomplished and respected practitioners. This is about providing role models and highlighting great work in a short form, easy to digest format. Each chapter is a synopsis of an hour plus interview. I have tried to capture the key takeaways and insights. Where appropriate, diagrams and images are used to help explain concepts and ideas. There is also a brief introduction about the interviewee and a QR Code linked to the podcast episode for those that want to explore further. In a way, this is a reference book I wrote for myself. The notes from interviews that I want to access and remember. Ultimately, these are the practitioners and mentors I wish I had in college.
Early Islamic Homes
With the explosion of new material emerging from a branch of archaeology that focuses specifically on Islamic periods and Islamic lands since the 1980s, it is most pertinent to consider its origin, its development, and its potential in reconstructing and interpreting past ways of life.1 Islam has been a literate culture since its inception; thus, academic inquiry has focused on written texts.2 While documentary evidence provides a wealth of information on many aspects of life, material derived from archaeology can supplement and contextualize the written record. The material record can serve as an independent arbitrator, separate from historical sources, which were often written with an agenda.3 While the interpretation of the material evidence may be disputed, the data cannot be denied, as it offers a first-hand record of what had existed.

Holly Addi is a U.S.-based artist who creates abstract paintings focused on the philosophy of beauty in imperfection. With a background in psychology, Addi examines energy, color, space, and landscape through tempered abstraction. Addi considers her practice as a "composition of imperfectionism." By utilizing abstraction, she creates moments by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, providing a space for contemplation. Her works do not reference any particular form, and interpretation becomes multifaceted. She has exhibited nationwide, and has been featured in Architectural Digest, My Domain, and Electrify Magazine. Holly's work can be found in public and private collections worldwide.

Wood and Wood Joints
There is a long tradition of using wood as a distinct and ecologically sound building material. Wooden architecture conveys for today's world the breadth of knowledge held in Western and Eastern cultures about the creative use of this unique material. The typical technique of building with wood, joinery, requires that elements are connected only by the skillful interlocking of the constructive parts. In this book, the history of wooden architecture is described in detail using hundreds of examples from Japan, China and Europe. From a holistic understanding, a picture emerges that is informative for architects, and designers, reopens an almost lost world to builders, and will enthrall laypeople. Also available in a German edition (ISBN 978-3-0356-2617-9) A new introduction highlights the continuing importance of traditional techniques, particularly in the age of digital manufacturing processes. For the first time, all photos are printed in duotone "A book for aesthetes ..." (Baumeister)

At Home
With more than 100 color photos, author Deborah Lencioni Lapp tells the story of her life in the houses she's called home, and in so doing, demonstrates the importance of architecture in our everyday lives. Having worked closely with renowned architect Arthur Dyson on her first home, the award-winning Lencioni Residence, Lapp returns to Dyson decades later, after the death of her husband, after her children have grown, and after her remarriage, to create a new home-the award-winning Lapp RiverHouse-for the next phase in her and her partner's lives. From the planning stages to soliciting bids from contractors to the challenges and joys of construction, Lapp lays out in specific, eye-opening, and sometimes humorous detail, how a client-architect collaboration can and should work. In an age of cookie-cutter McMansions, Lapp shows us that a nourishing, energizing, and embracing home that reflects your authentic self is not only possible, it makes all the difference."Deborah Lencioni Lapp weaves together the story of her own life, its sorrows and celebrations, with the story of the houses sheltering and reflecting that life; she gently-but unequivocally-reminds us that authenticity is reflected in all the choices that we make, not the least of which are the houses we build and the steps we take to make those houses ours. If the unexamined life is not worth living, then a thoughtful life will be present in every line, curve, angle, and space in which we move and breathe, a reminder of not only who we are but who we are meant to be."-David Borofka, author of A Longing for Impossible Things and The End of Good Intentions
Mono-Material
Solid matter. Monolithic and homogeneous concepts for a circular approach to architecture. In response to climate change, architects have been seeking a contemporary expression for durable, solid and homogeneous wall structures made of clay, wood, brick, concrete and recycled materials. This book follows 25 projects to analyze construction methods that predominantly involve materials that have a single origin and can be easily dismantled. It looks at a variety of different ways and scales in which architects have dealt with issues of mass and materiality, both in terms of design and construction. Structured according to the specific materials, the book allows direct comparisons, and renders visible solid building typologies and forms. Numerous drawings, developed especially for this book, document the projects. Two essays as well as interviews with Pepe Marquez and Arno Richter examine the strategies and background of monolithic architecture and solid construction methods. Solid building materials and their contribution to climate protection and sustainability Analytical presentations of single-variety and demountable construction methods Insights into research and applications of the materials
Super Potato Design
"We do not live only with clear-cut forms;rather, we exist in a world of forms that are often indistinct and vague." --Takashi Sugimoto, architect and James Beard Award-winning author Super Potato Design presents the work of internationally-renowned Japanese designer Takashi Sugimoto. After studying metal sculpture at Tokyo University of Fine Arts, Sugimoto began his career designing a series of bars and restaurants including the iconic Radio Bar that became a favorite hangout for designers like Issey Miyake, Ikko Tanaka, Yohji Yamamoto and Tadao Ando. He was soon recruited to design retail spaces including the original Muji "no-brand" shops along with hotels, tea ceremony spaces and wedding chapels. Super Potato's striking interiors have totally revolutionized Japanese design through the use of exposed concrete surfaces, rough-hewn timber and unevenly cut stone juxtaposed with salvaged metal and repurposed objects to create a sense of power and timelessness. The design vocabulary created by Sugimoto is universally imitated today (in Japan and throughout the world). It is what we now think of as "modern Japanese design"--although Sugimoto's own work has never been surpassed. Super Potato Design presents 40 of Sugimoto's most important projects in 320 full-color photographs by Yoshio Shiratori, who has worked with the designer since the beginning. Author and architect Mira Locher introduces Sugimoto's work and provides a thorough description for each project. A foreword by Tadao Ando and discussions with architect Kiyoshi Sey Takeyama and graphic designer Kenya Hara explore the direction of Japanese design today. A list of Super Potato's complete works rounds off this fascinating book.

Ornament Is Not a Crime
The distinctive visual language, bright colors, and unexpected materials of the '80s postmodernists are making a comeback. After decades of minimalism, midcentury modern, and Scandinavian design, a new wave of architects and designers are experimenting with shape, scale, and symbolic references to add expression and meaning to interior and furniture design.Playing with the themes of postmodernism, sometimes knowingly, sometimes incidentally, creatives are once again demonstrating that form doesn't have to follow function, less is not more, and ornament is not a crime. These twenty-one houses from around the world transform the everyday with joyful colors and patterns, the juxtaposition of materials, and the celebration of surfaces. Daring and delightful with a healthy dose of wit and whimsy, Ornament Is Not a Crime is for anyone seeking bold inspiration for their home.
