The Philadelphia House
At the very beginning of the interwar period, a small collection of formally trained architects created a distinctive residential type which can undoubtedly be recognized as a Philadelphia landmark. They surpassed the conventional pseudo-classic or neo-Gothic eclectic solution by a unique adaptation of the principles and criteria of design to suit the expression of the exclusive cultural tradition of the clients and to respond to the natural environment. The works of three Philadelphia architectural firms -- Mellor, Meigs and Howe, McGoodwin, and Willing and Sims -- are analyzed to explore this proposition, using six houses constructed between 1917 and 1928 as a basis. These homes and others located in the historic Chestnut Hill neighborhood are aesthetically pleasing. But they also represent a break with the past, the emergence of a new 'type' which is among the architectural design innovations of the last century generally conceived as 'organic' architecture. This work, which contains over 200 photographs and drawings, considers the houses, the training and development of the architects, the creation and development of Chestnut Hill itself, and the larger, distinct culture of Philadelphia in contributing to the emergence of this distinctive and lasting style.
Designed for Habitat
Designed for Habitat: New Directions for Habitat for Humanity presents 12 new projects designed and built via collaborations between architects and Habitat for Humanity(R).The ways in which we think about affordable housing are being challenged by designers and not-for-profit housing advocates such as Habitat for Humanity and its affiliates. New to this edition, the projects reflect new approaches to building scale, construction technology, energy and affordability, and design and context. Illustrated with over 100 color images, the case studies include detailed plans and photographs to show how these projects came about, the strategies used by each team to approach the design and construction process, and the obstacles they overcame to realize a successful outcome. The lessons and insights presented will be a valuable resource, whether you're an architect, an architecture student, a Habitat affiliate leader, or an affordable housing advocate.
Structural Design of Box Culverts
This manual has been developed to simplify and facilitate the structural design of box culverts and keep pace with developments in structural analysis technologies and employ them to reach the best use. It is considered as a practical book suitable for the current methods used in the design, and since the finite element programs have become a basic requirement for design in most of professional companies, it is necessary to link these programs to the manual solutions and understand the loads, analysis and outputs to reach the worst-case scenarios without forgetting the economic factors which is located in the second place after safety. The author has relied on the basic AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification, Seventh Edition (2014).For more details, please visit https: //centralwestpublishing.com

Creativity from Suburban Nowheres
Looking at suburbs as places of creativity gives rise to novel and thought-provoking narratives that typically run counter to the idea that suburbs are sites of "ordinary," "mundane," and "everyday" practices. Far from being geographies of "nowhere" - dull, materialistic, and monotone - suburbs are unpacked as being heterogeneous and historically layered places of living, work, and creation. Situating creativity in place and time, Creativity from Suburban Nowheres displaces mainstream understandings of creativity and widespread stereotypes commonly associated with the suburbs.Contributors explore the particular forms of creativity that suburbs elicit both in the process of their making, materialization, and community construction, and in the myriad ways in which suburbs are inhabited and experienced. They highlight accounts of suburbs as places that give people the space and latitude to shape individual and collective identities through creative practices at odds with mainstream culture, and often remote from the classic agglomeration "assets" associated with inner cities.Anchored in historical and geographical research, this volume highlights how and in what forms creativity should be understood in the suburbs, why and when creativity can be found, and how the notion of suburban creativity overthrows ingrained and dominant normative viewpoints. Rather than seeing creativity arise despite its suburban location, Creativity from Suburban Nowheres illuminates the emancipatory potential of suburbs for creativity.

Dear Susan... don't drink and decorate... (a blueprint for the NHS?)
This personal memoir attempts to set out a blueprint for new NHS hospitals, alongside a commentary about a recent experience as a Trauma inpatient and outpatient in a large failing London teaching hospital which highlighted some of the difficulties and frustrations facing patients. This took place during the NHS's struggle with the Covid pandemic. The buildings and facilities within which patients are treated and staff have to work are so important to the wellbeing and successful outcomes for all concerned, but are too often ignored. This book suggests a hospital building-led strategy to restore trust and to tackle the need for improvements for patients and staff. This approach was tried before between 1970 and 1995. Then it was possible to show how new hospital buildings could promote change and innovation. Now is the time to try this again as the climate for change feels similar to that of the 1970s. A political will to sort out the NHS is essential. The NHS and its staff are in desperate need for action to deal with the backlog post- Covid. The book includes personal records covering the time spent as an inpatient and the long road to recovery, using WhatsApp messages, emails, letters and commentary. Alongside this is a description of a fantasy concept for smaller hospitals to provide a post Covid blueprint to help reduce the number of people waiting on the NHS for a surgical or medical procedure. It provides an insight into subsequent efforts to engage with "the powers that be" to improve the experience for future patients.

Lima La Moderna
The participation of foreign intellectuals in the urban development of Peruvian cities, and particularly of Europeans in the introduction of new types of buildings in Lima, remains one of the most important influences on local architects and engineers.Based on the award-winning doctoral thesis of Javier Atoche Intili, a specialist in architectural heritage with roots in both South America and Europe, this monograph focuses on the study of the most active European designers in 1940s Peru, including the Austrian Richard Neutra, the German-born Paul Lester Wiener and the Spaniard Josep Lluis Sert. It also considers the economic, political and cultural circumstances that underpinned the design and use of multi-storey buildings in the historic centre of Lima: from the introduction of urban planning regulations to the presence of European-born architects who designed a significant number of these buildings, including Paul Linder from Germany, Mario Bianco from Italy and Theodor Cron from Switzerland. Finally, it reflects on the protection, conservation and valorisation of this vast architectural heritage.
Skylab
Skylab: The Nature of Buildings is the first monograph of the Portland, Oregon-based architecture and design studio. Founded by Jeff Kovel in 1999, Skylab has emerged as a leading creative force in the Pacific Northwest and North America. At the vanguard of innovative and sustainable design, the practice is known for a range of spectacular residences designed for leading creatives, as well as distinctive music venues, resorts, and other high-profile projects, including the N M Bodecker Foundation, Nike's Serena Williams Building, and the Columbia Building. Presenting more than two decades of work, the story of Skylab is told by several influential contributors through reflective essays, interviews, conversations, and anecdotes, as well as extensive project photography and illustrations that detail the firm's design process.A uniquely crafted object, the book's design is based on the concept of a double vinyl album, with four "sides" (A, B, C, D), ten projects "tracks," inside front- and back-cover gatefolds, and nine project "interlude" foldout posters in the book."Our work balances on three themes: narrative, strategy, and regeneration," Kovel writes in the book's Preface. "Narrative is the 'what'--a design process based on telling compelling stories. Strategy is the 'how'--innovating best practices through construction and market intelligence. Regeneration is the 'why'--our north star and the legacy of our work, defined by designing with nature as a partner, seeking to rebalance the relationship with land, time, and people. This was the bedrock meaning behind our practice when we started in 1999, and it continues to this day."

Parametric Design Approach in Architecture between Concept and Reality, Theory and Practice. The Impact on its Users and the Existing Setting
Master's Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Art - Architecture / History of Construction, grade: 1.8, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences (Bauhaus Dessau), course: Design Research, language: English, abstract: This research investigates the evaluation of parametric-based architecture in relation to its users and the surrounding environment. The Phaeno Science Centre in Germany serves as a case study, raising questions about how well the building fits with its local setting and users. The study adopts a qualitative and quantitative methodology known as Post-Occupancy Evaluation, which seeks feedback from building users and architects. The research emphasizes the need to distinguish between the behavior of complex systems and their users and the existing setting. It stresses that evaluating parametric architecture requires an understanding of the whole context rather than just a single structure. The study also suggests that architects should focus on the connectivity between built structures and users, rather than ignoring it. In addition, the study highlights the importance of evaluating architecture in general, and parametric architecture, in particular, given its widespread use in our built environment. It advocates for the inclusion of the Post-Construction Evaluation phase in the conventional core phases of the Architectural Design Process, making it just as important as other stages. The methodology for this study involves gathering data from numerous sources, including users, locals, architects, professionals, journals, newspapers, libraries, interviews, surveys, site visits, and personal reflections. By incorporating multiple viewpoints, the study hopes to gain a comprehensive understanding of the perceptions surrounding parametric architecture. Overall, the study emphasizes the importance of evaluating parametric-based architecture in relation to its users and the existing environment. It stresses the need for architects to focus on the functiona
Latinas in Architecture and Allies Vol II

Latinas in Architecture and our allies offers another glimpse to the Latina and Latino experience in architecture. The stories have roots from the United States, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Colombia, El Salvador, and Puerto Rico. Latinas and our allies have always worked hard, but we no longer put our heads down. While some immigrated to the US by free choice or by natural disaster or civil unrest, we hold our heads up high with relentless determination and spirit to succeed; to create architecture for everyone and by everyone.
Challenges and Opportunities of Bangladesh's Ready-Made Garment Industry. A comparative value chain analysis
Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Design (Industry, Graphics, Fashion), grade: 1.3, RWTH Aachen University, language: English, abstract: The thesis explores the value chain of Bangladesh's ready-made garments industry at a crucial point: The link between internationally operating brands and retailers and locally operating garment manufacturers. The research problem arose from the discussions about the question who can bear which responsibilities for improving the working conditions in the sector. By illustrating the various differences in the buyer-producer relations, the author sought to better understand the complex interdependencies of this network and thereby contribute to a better insight to aid all involved stakeholders to move the sector forward. Various types of relations between garment manufacturers and international buyers could be identied: Some manufacturers are relying on a wide choice of buying agents, buying houses and direct buyers. Other companies are producing mainly for direct buyers. The latter can benefit from a slightly higher profit margin but in both cases, the relations are based on oral contracts and the factories' capacity utilisation is subject to a great order fluctuation. A third and most noticeable group is characterized by very close ties to the buyers. These ties enable producers to re-negotiate order conditions in case of difficult circumstances and the first buyers are concluding long-term contracts with the manufacturers. The companies that rely on strong long-term contracts have a smaller profit margin but can manage their companies easier nevertheless because their capacity fluctuation is close to zero. At the same time, price and compliance pressure are stated as the most important challenges by the manufacturers. The enforcement of high standards on building and fire safety has become a number one topic in Bangladesh's RMG sector. According to a large part of the interviewed manufacturers, the regulations

Mallparks
In Mallparks, Michael T. Friedman observes that as cathedrals represented power relations in medieval towns and skyscrapers epitomized those within industrial cities, sports stadiums exemplify urban American consumption at the turn of the twenty-first century. Grounded in Henri Lefebvre and George Ritzer's spatial theories in their analyses of consumption spaces, Mallparks examines how the designers of this generation of baseball stadiums follow the principles of theme park and shopping mall design to create highly effective and efficient consumption sites. In his exploration of these contemporary cathedrals of sport and consumption, Friedman discusses the history of stadium design, the amenities and aesthetics of stadium spaces, and the intentions and conceptions of architects, team officials, and civic leaders. He grounds his analysis in case studies of Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore; Fenway Park in Boston; Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles; Nationals Park in Washington, DC; Target Field in Minneapolis; and Truist Park in Atlanta.
The Impacts of Islamic Rule on Spanish Architecture
Seminar paper from the year 2023 in the subject Art - Architecture / History of Construction, language: English, abstract: This paper explores the following statement: Under islamic rule, spanish architecture became an amalgamation of islamic and spanish styles producing a unique school of architectural thought. This research is essential for several reasons based on the activities and interventions seen in modern-day Spain. This intervention is vital for issues that were identified were both positive and negative. This topic of discussion is significant for understanding current affairs in the country, mainly Spanish architecture. Spain acquired social, political, and economic practices due to the invasion and intervention of Islamic culture. The practices have brought about different relations in the country, and the Islam invasion that followed a different set of laws can still be seen in the country today

Exteriorless Architecture
The current phase of capitalist development manifests itself through a very diverse range of spatial byproducts: data centers, warehouses, container terminals, logistics parks, and many others. Generally considered as mediocre and banal examples that sit outside of pre-established disciplinary canons, these architectural episodes are extremely relevant. They are relevant not for their aesthetic or historic qualities but for what they represent - for the system of values these spaces embed. They express specific power relations, exacerbate issues of labor, and generate dramatic processes of subjectivity. Most importantly, these architectures, despite their formal and typological heterogeneity, belong to a common paradigm: the EXTERIORLESS.How can an architecture of the EXTERIORLESS be defined? How does it differentiate from examples and manifestations of the past? How do notions of legibility, form versus function, typological articulation come into play? In situating the spatialities of contemporary capitalism within the larger debate on Anthropocene, Post-Anthropocene, and Capitalocene, the book attempts to answer those questions by delineating three main characteristics for an architecture of the EXTERIORLESS: its physical and symbolic role as interface; its ambiguous condition of being at the same time local and global, isolated and connected, compressed and expanded; and, lastly, its contribution to new forms of urbanity in absence of the traditional city. These three defining aspects constitute the main sections of the book. Each section includes two chapters covering a wide spectrum of themes and examples. In its tripartite organization, the book describes the influence that the experimental architecture of the 1960s has exerted on late-capitalist spatial byproducts; it analyzes the impact of logistics on the redesign of the territory; and it introduces the radical processes of urban transformation generated by the EXTERIORLESS.

Highlights of English Cathedrals
In 1986 I first toured Britain and was attracted to the British Cathedrals. Over the years this attraction has grown to a deep fascination. These days I have come to enjoy photography and also the creation of websites, so a project to photograph and create websites of all the English Cathedrals was inevitable. This body of work has led me to create a book format for people to enjoy.I have tried to capture something of the inspiration and beauty of each cathedral. The idea is that on each site we might walk together around the cathedral, and then go inside to explore, enjoy, wonder, be inspired ... and even meet with God! These cathedrals are a delight and certainly worth visiting.Further photos and information are available via: http: //paulscottinfo.ipage.com/england/cathedrals

La+ Interruption
How can design be used to challenge the status quo, to interrupt the jargon, to disrupt and redirect ecological and socio-economic flows? LA+ Journal's fourth international design ideas competition invited designers to take an established place and design something to productively interrupt both its cultural and spatial context. What does this mean? It means injecting something different into a given context to effect new meanings and new functions. It means questioning what design does, who it's designed for, what it looks like, and what it means. Issue #17 brings you the results of the LA+ INTERRUPTION design competition. As well as showcasing the award-winning designs and a comprehensive Salon des Refus矇s, LA+ INTERRUPTION features interviews with jurors Fiona Raby, Martin Rein-Cano, Mark Raggatt, Rania Ghosn, and Jason Zhisen Ho, and an essay by Katya Crawford, coauthor of the The Design Competition in Landscape Architecture(forthcoming).

Peter Womersley
Published in his centenary year, this book celebrates the life and work of the British architect Peter Womersley (1923-1993). From Farnley Hey near Huddersfield, his award-winning first building completed in 1954, to the angular, look-no-hands concrete structure of the Fairydean football stand in Galashiels, Womersley continuously pushed the frontiers of architectural design. Working from a small office in the remote Scottish Borders village of Gattonside, he claimed a place on the world stage: nowhere was this more apparent than in the California-inspired High Sunderland near Selkirk, the 'See-Through House' built for Bernat Klein. Six of Womersley's buildings in Scotland are now listed, three at the top-rate of Category A, while Farnley Hey is listed Grade II. Yet, despite such success, Womersley's work is at risk: the Category A Bernat Klein studio is derelict while the Category B Garlton Admissions Unit at Haddington, is boarded-up and the site deserted. The intention of this new book is to draw attention to the significance of his work, placing it in its national and international context. With plans and illustrations of all his buildings and projects, as well as a catalogue raisonn矇 including a bibliography by buildings, this book will secure Womersley's reputation.
Science and Digital Technology for Cultural Heritage - Interdisciplinary Approach to Diagnosis, Vulnerability, Risk Assessment and Graphic Information Models
The scientific and technological advances that influence the protection of cultural heritage are developing at an ever-increasing pace. Systems to explore, research and analyse their materiality, to control the different scopes, or to represent and model them have reached an unprecedented dimension in recent decades. The Network of Science and Technology for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage aims to promote collaboration between the agents of these systems, in order to facilitate the sharing of experiences and to foster technology transfer, with the common goal of contributing to the conservation of Cultural Heritage. In the context of the TechnoHeritage Network, the fourth edition of the International Congress on Science and Technology for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage was held March 26-30, 2019, in Seville, Spain. This Congress was an international meeting of researchers and specialists from multiple areas, whose line of work is the knowledge and conservation of Cultural Heritage. Among all the topics discussed, the role and impact of digital technologies for the knowledge, maintenance, management and dissemination of cultural heritage should be highlighted. Digital media modify the way of understanding this heritage, of perceiving it and transmitting it, and offer a new horizon of strategies to make decision-making more sustainable over time.

A Radical Vision by Open
This book presents the radical architectural strategies and poetic cultural projects developed by OPEN Architecture, and the opportunities and challenges that arise from redefining built forms. Drawing on a series of conversations and site visits to six recent groundbreaking projects, architecture writer Catherine Shaw describes how Beijing-based OPEN Architecture is reinventing and responding to China's complex and fast-changing cultural landscape with projects that mark a new era for contemporary Chinese cultural architecture. OPEN Architecture was founded in New York in 2003 by Li Hu and Huang Wenjing, while their Beijing office opened in 2008. From a contemporary art gallery buried beneath a sand dune to a sculptural open-air theatre in a remote mountain valley near the Great Wall, co-founders Li Hu and Huang Wenjing re-evaluate conventional Western assumptions about culture and design as they base each pioneering project on the needs and plea-sures of humanity within the context of diverse terrains and climates. In doing so, they not only consider how cultural architecture looks, but how it works. Projects are presented with commentary and contextual information as well as new analyses and archival material, including outstanding color photography, plans and drawings, and exploratory sketches. This book provides a fresh perspective on contemporary cultural architecture and place making, hig-lighting the architects' sources of inspiration, their challenges, and their construction methods, showing how each impactful project responds to China's distinctive context.
