The church looks like a medieval church, but was rebuilt from the ground up in the nineteenth century by the vicar, William Parish; his friend Lewis Carroll often stayed at the rectory opposite the church. The history of the site goes back much further, to the first Saxon settlers, and before that to neolithic and mesolithic people, who had settlements within a hundred metres of the church. Designing for Life
As an interior designer and lifestyle blogger, a lot is asked of me questions and how to translate my style is what I am asked the most. From now, "my look" has become distinct enough that I like to think if you have seen a array of police from five different houses, you would immediately identify the one I designed. That said, you may not be able to easily summarize it in a few words. My looks aren't about one thing or the other but rather it's a specific mix that I've spent years developing.You can take the title of this book literally: Everything in these pages is really made for living. In the rooms I design, the sofas are matched with beautiful ottomans upholstered in tactile fabrics that, yes, you can actually put your feet up on (or, in my case, Converse). In my own kitchen, I used one of my favorite materials: beautiful, variegated Moroccan glazed terra-cotta tiles. They're full of nicks and dings; no two pieces are alike. And that's why I love them. "Perfect" is not my goal.

The forms and expressions of architecture are derived from the contemporary social, economic, and political life of a people, and from the climate and natural resources of a place. From these interacting factors grows a style of building so native to the time and place that it seems the 'natural' response to that environment. This book, a substantial revision of the 1967 edition, treats construction techniques in the context of their environment and traces the history of various European and North American influences on methods of building in Upper Canada during the pioneer years.The author dissects a building to study its anatomy. With the aid of 475 photographs and drawings, mostly by himself and more than half of them new in this edition, he discusses the practical aspects of construction and the technical methods used in the erection not only of log and frame houses but also of mills, churches, bridges, and schools. Separate chapters deal with polygonal buildings, the woodworking tools of the period, exterior decorative woodwork, cobblestone treatment, and building with mud brick and with stone and brick masonry. New information on French building techniques across the continent provides a contrast with the predominantly 'English' methods of building in Ontario. Although the principal topic discussed in the book continues to be timber framing, particularly in houses, there are new chapters on barns and on plank construction. Homesteads
West of Herkimer's Nose, a point of land just outside Kingston, three early highways ran to the provincial capital of York - the Danforth Road completed in 1802, the York-Kingston Road finished in 1817, the old Highway 2. Along them sprang up settlements - assemblages of inns, mills, churches, and houses. The Loyalists were early arrivals, followed by immigrant families from across the Atlantic and south of the border. Many of the buildings they erected still stand. They are the subject of this book. Margaret McBurney and Mary byers have spent two years following the old highways between Kingston and Toronto, searching for the outside pre-Confederation buildings of each district along the routes. They have talked to residents and local historians, probed into township records and old memoirs, sifted the wealth of the Ontario Archives, in order to trace the history not only of the buildings, but of the families who built them and lived or met in them. The result is a loving account, illustrated with more than 150 photographs by Hugh Robertson, one of Canada's finest architectural photographers.
