A history of Washington National Cathedral and the theory of an American civil religion. In 1792, Pierre Charles L'Enfant, the first city planner of Washington, DC, introduced the idea of a "great church for national purposes." Unlike L'Enfant's plans for the White House, the US Capitol, and the National Mall, this grand temple to the republic never materialized. But in 1890, the Episcopal Church began planning what is known today as Washington National Cathedral. This volume is the 9th in a series of books that focus on the practice of Urban Environmental Management (UEM) in developing countries. Such cities face more immediate problems than those in the developed world and have fewer resources to deal with them. This study is the report of a graduate studio that took place at the School of Planning, College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP), University of Cincinnati, USA from August through December 2022. The objective of the studio was to prepare students to work overseas in data-poor environments as professional consulting planners. The 14 domestic and international students operated in sector-level teams preparing a 5-Year Environmental Plan for Casablanca, Morocco. This important port has a long and fascinating history, with both architectural treasures and the remnants of a glorious but contested path. As the largest city and most important port of the Maghreb region of North Africa, it is plagued by poverty, and serious environmental problems of poor air quality, transportation congestion, water pollution, and inadequate sewage and sanitation infrastructure among them.

The Origin and Development of Dougong and Zaojing in Early China
This book focuses on two significant architectural elements in traditional Chinese buildings, that is, Dougong and Zaojing. Dougong is a bracket set often sitting above columns and beams as a key component in the great buildings and tombs of imperial China. Zaojing is a special structure sunken into the ceiling, often profusely decorated with carvings and colorful paintings in various motifs. As sumptuary laws from imperial China stipulated, Dougong (in its multiple forms) and Zaojing used to be constructed only in the great halls of royal palaces and major religious temples. There is ceaseless research on Dougong and Zaojing by modern architectural scholars. This is also facilitated by the heated architectural heritage conservation movement in contemporary China. As unique features that define the characteristics of traditional Chinese architecture, Dougong, and Zaojing not only widely appear in numerous counterfeit historic structures, but are also creatively revived in many cultural and commercial buildings. This book inquires about the origin of Dougong and Zaojing in the Chinese Bronze Age, and their heavenly interpretation in the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220). Compared to their later technically oriented development during the Tang to the Qing dynasties (c. 618-1912), and their modern preservation and innovative reinterpretation, the rich cultural meanings originally embodied in Dougong and Zaojing have almost disappeared. If the important architectural elements dougong and zaojing are taken for granted as a defining identity of Chinese traditional architecture, then they are feebly reflected in modern architecture practice as a mere visual element. Considering the transcendental quality that dougong and zaojing had in the Han dynasty in effectively expressing a mystical and magical worldview, there is a tangible loss of Chinese architectural heritage today.

High Volume Fly Ash Concrete (HVFA) is a type of concrete that incorporates a large volume of fly ash as a partial replacement for Portland cement. Fly ash is a by-product of coal combustion that is collected from power plants, and it has pozzolanic properties that can enhance the durability, workability, and strength of concrete.In HVFA, the replacement of Portland cement with fly ash typically ranges from 50% to 70% by mass, resulting in a reduction in the amount of cement required and a decrease in the carbon footprint of the concrete. However, this high volume of fly ash can also affect the behavior of the concrete in structural design.One of the main challenges in designing with HVFA concrete is the potential for delayed strength development. Fly ash reacts slowly with water, and this can result in a longer period for the concrete to reach its desired strength. In 1862, a four-story building was erected in the Comstock town of Virginia, Nevada. Through the years, it has held fast through damage and destruction, lived over a century rich in history, and became this city's famous icon. Virginia City's Washoe Club is a fascinating structure and the authors have brought forth the true facts around this once elegant and stately west coast hotel and saloon.
Sri Lanka
In 1975, I was in Sri Lanka on a photo assignment for The Tourist Board of Sri Lanka. Their 1976 calendar was on the agenda. I heard so many great things about Sri Lanka. I wasn't disappointed. They are a predominately Buddhist country. Buddhism was introduced by Venerable Mahinda, the son of the emperor Ashoka, during the reign of Sri Lanka's King Devanampiyatilla. According to legend, a tooth was taken from the Buddha as he lay on his funeral pyre. It was smuggled to Sri Lanka in 313 A.D., hidden in the hair of Princess Hemamali, who fled the Hindu armies besieging her father's kingdom in India. The majority of the architectural ruins I photographed go back to this era. There are beautiful local Buddhist shrines scattered throughout the country. The ancient frescoes of Sigiria, a rock fortress built by King Kassapa in 477-495 CE, are a must-see if you travel to Sri Lanka. The agricultural areas are fantastic; there are great photo opportunities everywhere -- from the terrace rice paddies to the tea plantation at Nuwara Eliya. There is an old hill club built by the British in the 19th century. It's kept much like it was then, complete with the old pool tables. One can only imagine what went on there! The Negombo's fish market and harbor were high on my photo list. I recently checked the internet and found only hotels and resorts. I imagine that most of these areas are gone now. Fruit and vegetable vendors were a staple of the villages; mini-malls and grocery stores didn't exist. The Tissamaharama game reserve, which is next to Yala National Park, was an experience I shall never forget. We were in a jeep at sunset and happened to cross a lone elephant. It was startled by our presence and charged our jeep. I used my camera's motor drive and took a lot of photos. The ground shook, and the photos were mostly blurry. I prayed that the game warden knew what he was doing; he did. The elephant stopped four feet from the front bumper. The photographs were taken over a 10-day period in 1975. I used Nikon cameras and Lenses, Kodak Kodachrome & Kodak color infared films on this project.I am happy to have shared with you a look back in time.Douglas Olson
Towards a New Architecture
Originally published in French as a series of essays in the magazine "L'Esprit nouveau (revue)" beginning in 1921, "Towards a New Architecture" by Le Corbusier was published as a book in 1923 and first translated into English in 1927. Constructing Gardens, Cultivating the City
Constructing Gardens, Cultivating the City is the first cultural history of major new parks developed in Paris in the late twentieth century, as part of the city's program of adaptive reuse of industrial spaces. Thanks to laws that gave the city more political autonomy, Paris's local government launched a campaign of park creation in the late 1970s that continued to the turn of the millennium. The parks in this book represent this campaign and illustrate different facets of their cultural and historical context. Archival research, interviews, and analyses of the parks reveal how postmodern debates about urban planning, the historic city, public space, and nature's presence in an urban setting influenced their designs. In sum, the city adopted the garden as a model for public parks, investing in complex, richly symbolic and representational spaces. These parks were intended to represent contemporary twists on traditional designs and serve local residents as much as they would contribute to Paris's role as a world city. The parks' development process often included points of conflict, pointing to differing views on what Parisian space should represent and fundamental contradictions between the characteristics of public space and the garden as it is traditionally defined. These parks demonstrate the ongoing cultivation of the city over time, in which transformed sites not only fulfil new functions but also engage with history and their surroundings to create new meaning. They stand for landscape as a form of signifying cultural production that directly engages with other art forms and ways of knowing. Just as the Luxembourg Gardens, the Tuileries, and the Buttes-Chaumont parks exemplify their eras' cultural dynamics, such parks as the Jardin Atlantique, Parc Andr矇-Citro禱n, and the Jardin des Halles express contemporary French culture within the archetypal space of their era, the city. Finally, they point the way to current trends in landscape architecture, such as citizen gardening and ecological initiatives.

Oriental It consists of 108 octavo pages, and was written, and perhaps also composed, by Muhammad Abfi Bakr Makki Ahmad in 1879. Many of the facts recorded in it are to be found in Naum Shoucair's Arabic History of the Sfidan, but as a whole the little work is valuable, and is worth editing and translating. On the first and last pages are impressions of the seal of Gordon Basha, and the volume seems to indicate that his interest in the history of the Sudan Was great.
