Canonic Repertories and the French Musical Press
A bold application of the concept of "canonical" works to the development of French operatic and concert life in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This long-awaited book by a leading historian of European music life offers a fresh reading of concert and operatic life by showing how certain musical works in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century France came to be considered "canonic" that is, admirable and worthy of being taken as models. In a series of interlinked essays, William Weber draws particular attention to the ways in which such reputations could shift in different eras and circumstances. The first chapter outlines how such a surge of reputation came about for Jean-Baptiste Lully after his death in 1687, followed a century later by one for the operas of Christoph-Willibald Gluck and Niccol簷 Piccinni. Next, Beverly Wilcox contributes a crucial chapter exploring how a canon of sacred works evolved at the Concert Spirituel between 1725 and 1790. Subsequent chapters detail the rise of an "incipient canon" for Joseph Haydn's music in the 1780s; a new operatic canon centered on works of Gioachino Rossini and Giacomo Meyerbeer; a century-long canonic repertory at the theater of the Op矇ra-Comique; and, between 1860 and 1914, frequent concert performances of excerpts from Wagner's operas, sometimes along with excerpts from Meyerbeer's. Throughout, Weber and Wilcox demonstrate how the French musical press reflected musical taste, and also shaped it, across two centuries.
Magician of Sound, 29
French composer Maurice Ravel was described by critics as a magician, conjurer, and illusionist. Scholars have been aware of this historical curiosity, but none so far have explained why Ravel attracted such critiques or what they might tell us about how to interpret his music. Magician of Sound examines Ravel's music through the lens of illusory experience, considering how timbre, orchestral effects, figure/ground relationships, and impressions of motion and stasis might be experienced as if they were conjuring tricks. Applying concepts from music theory, psychology, philosophy, and the history of magic, Jessie Fillerup develops an approach to musical illusion that newly illuminates Ravel's fascination with machines and creates compelling links between his music and other forms of aesthetic illusion, from painting and poetry to fiction and phantasmagoria. Fillerup analyzes scenes of enchantment and illusory effects in Ravel's most popular works, including Bol矇ro, La Valse, Daphnis et Chlo矇, and Rapsodie espagnole, relating his methods and musical effects to the practice of theatrical conjurers. Drawing on a rich well of primary sources, Magician of Sound provides a new interdisciplinary framework for interpreting this enigmatic composer, linking magic and music.
Charting the Music of the Fifties -- Volume 3
For the second half of the 1950s, what is the number nine popular single in Australia? "April Love" by Pat Boone with Billy Vaughn. Boone's shift from R&B covers to love ballads is reflected in this hit. What is the number nine single in the UK? Elvis Presley's version of "Blue Suede Shoes." The song is often associated with Presley, although Carl Perkins was the original recording artist. How about the number nine single in Canada? "At the Hop" by Danny & the Juniors. Danny Rapp was no more than 17 at the time, being part of the late 1950s rush of new, young talent. The number nine single in Flanders is "Veel Bittare Tranen" by Enny Denita. She was primarily a dancer, but her single was a big-seller in Belgium. In Germany, the number nine single is Harry Belafonte's well-known "Banana Boat Song (Day-O)." There was a fever for islands music in Germany at the time, and this folk tune fit right in. How about the number nine single in Norway? Vidar Sandbeck and his catchy, folksy "Pengegaloppen." The number nine single in Wallonia is "Little Darlin'" by Canadian group The Diamonds. The quartet recorded the song as a parody of doo-wop, but the result was a smash hit that is still representative of the sounds of the times. And, what about the number nine Classical composition of the entire decade? Alan Hovhaness' "Symphony #2 'Mysterious Mountain'." It took some time for Hovhaness' music to be accepted by his contemporaries. But, a positive review by an insightful music critic turned the tide, and Hovhaness stopped destroying his works! If you would like to know the other entries in these and five other countries, as well as the top Classical compositions of the entire decade, then get the book, and look inside. The book features numerous mini-biographies of artists and composers, as well as an extensive bibliography.
Edvard Grieg and His Songs

Where Sight Meets Sound
The main function of western musical notation is incidental: it prescribes and records sound. But during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, notation began to take on an aesthetic life all its own. In the early fifteenth century, a musician might be asked to sing a line slower, faster, or starting on a different pitch than what is written. By the end of the century composers had begun tasking singers with solving elaborate puzzles to produce sounds whose relationship to the written notes is anything but obvious. These instructions, which appear by turns unnecessary and confounding, challenge traditional conceptions of music writing that understand notation as an incidental consequence of the desire to record sound. This book explores innovations in late-medieval music writing as well as how modern scholarship on notation has informed--sometimes erroneously--ideas about the premodern era. Drawing on both musical and music-theoretical evidence, this book reframes ourunderstanding of late-medieval musical notation as a system that was innovative, cutting-edge, and dynamic--one that could be used to generate music, not just preserve it.
Music for Others
Musical activity is one of the most ubiquitous and highly valued forms of social interaction in North America (to say nothing of world over), being engaged from sporting events to political rallies, concerts to churches. Moreover, music's use as an affective agent for political and religious programs suggests that it has ethical significance. Indeed, many have said as much. It is surprising then that music's ethical significance remains one of the most undertheorized aspects of both moral philosophy and music scholarship. Music for Others: Care, Justice, and Relational Ethics in Christian Music fills part of this scholarly gap by focusing on the religious aspects of musical activity, particularly on the practices of Christian communities. Based on ethnomusicological fieldwork at three Protestant churches and a group of seminary students studying in an immersion course at South by Southwest (SXSW), and synthesizing theories of discourse, formation, and care ethics oriented towards restorative justice, it first argues that relationships are ontological for both human beings and musical activity. It further argues that musical meaning and emotion converge in human bodies such that music participates in personal and communal identity construction in affective ways-yet these constructions are not always just. Thus, considering these aspects of music's ways of being in the world, Music for Others finally argues that music is ethical when it preserves people in and restores people to just relationships with each other, and thereby with God.

Popular Music, Power and Play
Once the domain of a privileged few, the art of record production is today within the reach of all. The rise of the ubiquitous DIY project studio and internet streaming have made it so. And while the creative possibilities available to everyday musicians are seemingly endless, so too are the multiskilling and project management challenges to be faced. In order to demystify the contemporary popular-music-making phenomenon, Marshall Heiser reassesses its myriad processes and wider sociocultural context through the lens of creativity studies, play theory and cultural psychology. This innovative new framework is grounded in a diverse array of creative-practice examples spanning the CBGBs music scene to the influence of technology upon modern-day music. First-hand interviews with Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads), Bill Bruford (King Crimson, Yes) and others whose work has influenced the way records are made today are also included. Popular Music, Power and Play is as thought provoking as it will be indispensable for scholars, practitioners and aficionados of popular music and the arts in general.
Pearl Jam and Philosophy
The first scholarly discussion on the band, Pearl Jam and Philosophy examines both the songs (music and lyrics) and the activities (live performances, political commitments) of one of the most celebrated and charismatic rock bands of the last 30 years. The book investigates the philosophical aspects of their music at various levels: existential, spiritual, ethical, political, metaphysical and aesthetic. This philosophical interpretation is also dependent on the application of textual and poetic analysis: the interdisciplinary volume puts philosophical aspects of the band's lyrics in close dialogue with 19th- and 20th-century European and American poetry. Through this widespread philosophical examination, the book further looks into the band's immense popularity and commercial success, their deeply loyal fanbase and genuine sense of community surrounding their music, and the pivotal place the band holds within popular music and contemporary culture.

The Cambridge Companion to Music and Romanticism
This Companion presents a new understanding of the relationship between music and culture in and around the nineteenth century, and encourages readers to explore what Romanticism in music might mean today. Challenging the view that musical 'romanticism' is confined to a particular style or period, it reveals instead the multiple intersections between the phenomenon of Romanticism and music. Drawing on a variety of disciplinary approaches, and reflecting current scholarly debates across the humanities, it places music at the heart of a nexus of Romantic themes and concerns. Written by a dynamic team of leading younger scholars and established authorities, it gives a state-of-the-art yet accessible overview of current thinking on this popular topic.

Inventing the Recording
Inventing the Recording focuses on the decades in which recorded sound went from a technological possibility to a commercial and cultural artefact. Through the analysis of a specific and unique national context, author Eva Moreda Rodr穩guez tells the stories of institutions and individuals in Spain and discusses the development of discourses and ideas in close connection with national concerns and debates, all while paying close attention to original recordings from this era. The book starts with the arrival in Spain of notices about Edison's invention of the phonograph in 1877, followed by the first demonstrations of the invention (1878-1882) by scientists and showmen. These demonstrations greatly stimulated the imagination of scientists, journalists and playwrights, who spent the rest of the 1880s speculating about the phonograph and its potential to revolutionize society once it was properly developed and marketed. The book then moves on to analyse the 'traveling phonographs' and salones fonogr獺ficos of the 1890s and early 1900s, with phonographs being paraded around Spain and exhibited in group listening sessions in theatres, private homes and social spaces pertaining to different social classes. Finally, the book covers the development of an indigenous recording industry dominated by the so-called gabinetes fonogr獺ficos, small businesses that sold imported phonographs, produced their own recordings, and shaped early discourses about commercial phonography and the record as a commodity between 1896 and 1905.

Language, Music, and Mind
The first cognitivist theory of the nature of ineffable, or verbally inexpressible, musical knowledge.Taking a novel approach to a longstanding problem in the philosophy of art, Diana Raffman provides the first cognitivist theory of the nature of ineffable, or verbally inexpressible, musical knowledge. In the process she also sheds light on central issues in the theory of mind.Raffman invokes recent theory in linguistics and cognitive psychology to provide an account of the content and etiology of musical knowledge that "can not be put into words." Within the framework of Lerdahl and Jackendoff's generative theory of music perception, she isolates three kinds of ineffability attending our conscious knowledge of music--access, feeling, and nuance ineffability--and shows how these arise.Raffman makes a detailed comparison of linguistic and musical understanding, culminating in an attack on the traditional idea that human emotions constitute the meaning or semantic content of music. She compares her account of musical ineffability to several traditional approaches to the problem, particularly those of Nelson Goodman and Stanley Cavell. In the concluding chapter, Raffman explores a significant obstacle that her theory poses to Daniel Dennett's propositional theory of consciousness.
Tears For Fears The Hurting
In 1983, Tears For Fears' debut album, The Hurting, was released after the success of their iconic single, 'Mad World'. Whilst embracing the popularity of synth pop, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith created an album that had a darker edge to it. Commercially it was a bold move but with memorable melodies and catchy rhythms, it paid off - all whilst making reference to the work of psychologist Arthur Janov. In this book, music author Laura Shenton MA LLCM DipRSL offers an in depth perspective on The Hurting from a range of angles including how the album came to be, how it was presented and received at the time (live as well as on record), and what it means in terms of Tears For Fears' legacy today. As the author explains: "Basically, the book covers how the album was made, what was going on with the music in terms of the artist's intentions, how it did musically and commercially and what happened next." The narrative is essentially driven by contemporary interviews with the artists with small bits of music theory where relevant... in some cases they delve into the structure / key signatures / time signatures, based on the original sheet music without straying away from being an engaging read for non-musicians.

Poems Of A Musical Flavour
This book is the last in the series and covers years 1994 to 1996 and 2002.I was 20, 21 and 22 and my life was a little more...meh...and so much happened I guess I didn't have enough time to write, but I certainly had the ideas. I was legally an adult, technically an adult, but mentally still a teenager. With everything going on in my life I wrote less and less. Clearly the endeavour was waning. Or I just needed a holiday. I did start line dancing and that grew into a full blown love for three years. It was music, after all...so clearly my love of music was now leaning toward the dancing side of things. In 2002 I wrote 1 song. That's all I wrote. And I'm surprised I wrote that because I hadn't written in six years. I was 28, still living at home as I had taken on the chore of being a care-giver for my mother and I had moved into other things. Line dancing had stopped but my love of music hadn't and never will. That was the last song I wrote and all of them were my practice for storytelling in four verses, a chorus, and a bridge for much bigger and better things. And now I've honoured them with these publications. The book also contains some witty one liners and anecdotes about what was happening, who I wanted to be, or who I had a crush on.They are not perfect, nor meant to be, they're just the musings of a young woman with crushes and dreams.Enjoy!
Poems Of A Musical Flavour
This book features lyrics I wrote in 1992 when I was 18 years old. 1992 was a good year musically. Indecent Obsession came out with their second album, Indio, and I was still crazy for the keyboardist. I watched them on every show I could and even won a prize pack from a radio station. I wrote 133 songs, so beat my record from the year before. But there was more to come. The book also contains some witty one liners and anecdotes about what was happening, who I wanted to be, or who I had a crush on. They are not perfect, nor meant to be, they're just the musings of a young teenage girl with crushes and dreams. Enjoy!
Poems Of A Musical Flavour
In 1993 I was 19 years old and still living in South Australia, but then, what else was I going to be doing? 1993 is split into two parts as, well, I beat my previous year's record and wrote 201 songs, so cutting it into two parts makes for easier reading. The book also contains some witty one liners and anecdotes about what was happening, who I wanted to be, or who I had a crush on.They are not perfect, nor meant to be, they're just the musings of a young teenage girl with crushes and dreams. Here's 1993 part 1.Enjoy!
Poems Of A Musical Flavour
1993 part 2 is 101 songs to read and enjoy. Covering a wide range of topics, mostly love, and quite plagiarised by myself. Life in general had changed, the world, the people in it, the ways, the whys, the whats. What the hell were we doing to the world? If only we had kept things the way they were because they changed, and not for the better.1993 is split into two parts because I beat my previous year's record and wrote 201 songs, so cutting it into two parts makes for easier reading. The book also contains some witty one-liners and anecdotes about what was happening, who I wanted to be, or who I had a crush on.They are not perfect, nor meant to be, they're just the musings of a young teenage girl with crushes and dreams. Poems Of A Musical Flavour
In 1989 I was 15 and started writing song lyrics. Why? Because I wanted to be the Australian version of Debbie Gibson, on whom I was also majorly crushing. I thought I was hot and wrote prolifically, although I started writing late in the year. I was also playing drums in my music class's end-of-year musical. In 1990 I was 16 and out of school, listening to more, doing more, and reading more. So more artists were in my life and I was starting to analyse song lyrics, which I guess led me to analyse books...Little did I know over the seven and a bit years I wrote that it was setting me up for bigger and better scribblings, namely novels over 500 pages and 100,000 words, and now novellas and short stories. This book features lyrics I wrote from 1989 to 1990 and contains some witty one liners and anecdotes about what was happening, who I wanted to be, or who I had a crush on.They are not perfect, nor meant to be, they're just the musings of a young teenage girl with crushes and dreams.Enjoy!

Baroque Music in Post-War Cinema
Studies of pre-existing music in narrative cinema often focus on a single film, composer or director. The approach here adopts a wider perspective, placing a specific musical repertoire - baroque music - in the context of its reception to explore its mobilisation in post-war cinema. It shows how various revivals have shaped musical fashion, and how cinema has drawn on resultant popularity and in turn contributed to it. Close analyses of various films raise issues of baroque musical style and form to question why eighteenth-century music remains an exception to dominant film-music discourses. Account is taken of changing modern performance practice and its manifestation in cinema, particularly in the biopic. This question of the reimagining of baroque repertoire leads to consideration of pastiches and parodies to which cinema has been particularly drawn, and subsequently to the role that neobaroque music has played in more recent films.
Dr. Charles Burney and the Organ
Whereas Dr Burney's writings are often mentioned in studies on eighteenth-century music, not much interest seems to have been given specifically to his relation to the organ, which played an important part in his professional career as a practising musician. No better introduction to the aesthetic ethos of the eighteenth-century English organ can be found than in Burney's remarks disseminated in his various writings. Taken together, they construct a coherent discourse on taste and constitute an aesthetic. Burney's view of the organ is indicative of a broader ethos of moderation that permeates his whole work, and is at one with the dominant moral philosophy of Georgian England. This conception is ripe with patriotic undertones, while it also articulates a constant plea for politeness as a condition for harmonious social interaction. He believed that moderation, simplicity, and fancy were the constituents of good taste as well as good manners.

Carole King’s Tapestry
Carole King's Tapestry is both an anthemic embodiment of second-wave feminism and an apotheosis of the Laurel Canyon singer-songwriter sound and scene. And these two elements of the album's historic significance are closely related insofar as the professional autonomy of the singer-songwriter is an expression of the freedom and independence women of King's generation sought as the turbulent sixties came to a close. Aligning King's own development from girl to woman with the larger shift in the music industry from teen-oriented singles by girl groups to albums by adult-oriented singer-songwriters, this volume situates Tapestry both within King's original vision as the third in a trilogy (preceded by Writer and followed by Music) and as a watershed in musical and cultural history, challenging the male dominance of the music and entertainment industries and laying the groundwork for female dominated genres such as women's music and Riot Grrrl punk.

NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST - A sweeping, genre-bending "masterpiece" (Minneapolis Star Tribune) exploring Black art, music, and culture in all their glory and complexity--from Soul Train, Aretha Franklin, and James Brown to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Whitney Houston, and Beyonc矇 ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Chicago Tribune, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Dallas Morning News, Publishers Weekly "Gorgeous essays that reveal the resilience, heartbreak, and joy within Black performance."--Brit Bennett, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Vanishing Half A Kirkus Reviews Best Nonfiction Book of the Century - An Oprah Daily Best Nonfiction Book of the Past Two Decades "I was a devil in other countries, and I was a little devil in America, too." Inspired by these few words, spoken by Josephine Baker at the 1963 March on Washington, MacArthur "Genius Grant" Fellow and bestselling author Hanif Abdurraqib has written a profound and lasting reflection on how Black performance is inextricably woven into the fabric of American culture. Each moment in every performance he examines--whether it's the twenty-seven seconds in "Gimme Shelter" in which Merry Clayton wails the words "rape, murder," a schoolyard fistfight, a dance marathon, or the instant in a game of spades right after the cards are dealt--has layers of resonance in Black and white cultures, the politics of American empire, and Abdurraqib's own personal history of love, grief, and performance. Touching on Michael Jackson, Patti LaBelle, Billy Dee Williams, the Wu-Tan Clan, Dave Chappelle, and more, Abdurraqib writes prose brimming with jubilation and pain. With care and generosity, he explains the poignancy of performances big and small, each one feeling intensely familiar and vital, both timeless and desperately urgent. Filled with sharp insight, humor, and heart, A Little Devil in America exalts the Black performance that unfolds in specific moments in time and space--from midcentury Paris to the moon, and back down again to a cramped living room in Columbus, Ohio. The Marks of a Maestro
Only recently has it become obvious that conductors' annotated scores and marked orchestral parts are of great cultural, historical and musical importance. In the not-so-distant past, these artefacts had something of an uncertain status with many either languishing unopened in libraries and family archives or simply being dispersed or discarded. With the help of institutions such as the Royal Academy of Music, Harvard University and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra this has begun to change with their extensive collections of these materials now being made available to scholars and musicians. This element examines the emergence of these artefacts as didactic and interpretative tools and explores the ways in which the performance styles of ten iconic conductors active in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries are reflected in their annotated scores and marked orchestral parts of Mozart's Symphony No. 41, K. 551 ('Jupiter').
Which Side Are You On?
When he emerged from the nightclubs of Greenwich Village, Bob Dylan was often identified as a "protest" singer. As early as 1962, however, Dylan was already protesting the label: "I don't write no protest songs," he told his audience on the night he debuted "Blowin' in the Wind." "Protest" music is largely perceived as an unsubtle art form, a topical brand of songwriting that preaches to the converted. But popular music of all types has long given listeners food for thought. Fifty years before Vietnam, before the United States entered World War I, some of the most popular sheet music in the country featured anti-war tunes. The labor movement of the early decades of the century was fueled by its communal "songbook." The Civil Rights movement was soundtracked not just by the gorgeous melodies of "Strange Fruit" and "A Change Is Gonna Come," but hundreds of other gospel-tinged ballads and blues. In Which Side Are You On?, author James Sullivan delivers a lively anecdotal history of the progressive movements that have shaped the growth of the United States, and the songs that have accompanied and defined them. Covering one hundred years of social conflict and progress across the twentieth century and into the early years of the twenty-first, this book reveals how protest songs have given voice to the needs and challenges of a nation and asked its citizens to take a stand--asking the question "Which side are you on?"

Blues - Roots
Als WC Handy 1903 am Bahnhof von Tutwiler das erste Mal einen Blues (Go where the Southern cross the Dog ) von einem unbekannten Gitarristen / S瓣nger h繹rt, der zudem mit einem Messer slidete, war das Genre offensichtlich schon weit gereift. Eine packende Geschichte mit vielen Einblicken.
Transforming Ethnomusicology Volume II
For decades, ethnomusicologists across the world have considered how to affect positive change for the communities they work with. Through illuminating case studies and reflections by a diverse array of scholars and practitioners, Transforming Ethnomusicology aims to both expand dialoguesabout social engagement within ethnomusicology and, at the same time, transform how we understand ethnomusicology as a discipline. The second volume of Transforming Ethnomusicology takes as a point of departure the recognition that colonial and environmental damages are grounded in historical and institutional failures to respect the land and its peoples. Featuring Indigenous and other perspectives from Brazil, North America, Australia, Africa, and Europe this volume critically engages with how ethnomusicologists can support marginalized communities in sustaining their musical knowledge and threatened geographies.

Zastosowanie Metodologii Lean Six SIGMA
