The Second Book of a Devout Pop Picker
This is the second part of the memoir of an anonymous pop picker, covering a period of 23 years in Britain from the early 80s. Being a memoir, it enables the reader to follow the specific strands of his experience as a continuous narrative. Being anonymous, it gives the reader access to typical impressions and responses, making it representative as well as personal. It's about great records and dreadful records, heroic acts and acts whose success drains the living spirit. It's about golden moments at gigs and unforgettable episodes at festivals; it's about hunting for original copies and being swallowed up by record fairs; it's about attending music quizzes and becoming a momentary sex god. It's about ordinary people responding to events in a way that posterity often claims they didn't. It's about those moulded plastic rings at the centre of seven-inch singles and those brittle circular fixtures designed to secure early CDs in their otherwise-impregnable casings. A chunk of it is given over to the indie scene of the 90s, its hopes, its triumphs and delusions. It gives readers a taste of its southern English context and the lives of those in marginal bands on the Camden scene. This world once had a dream. Many feel it was fulfilled in a haze of white powder, while others thought it was snatched away; by political complacency, by the corporate world of mainstream entertainment; or perhaps, specifically, by the Spice Girls and Westlife. Most importantly, however, the book is about ageing. Our anonymous pop picker quickly moves beyond that esteemed 16-24 age bracket and, from then on, it's all downhill - except of course that it has proved to be not quite so terrible. Nowadays, there is as much facility for pop fans on the sedate side of fifty as there is for teenagers - we have magazines, TV channels, radio stations and festivals, put together with our vintage in mind, comprising a vibrant and lucrative market, with the internet providing additional possibilities endlessly. These pages chart the journey from the fading of youth in the cynical 80s to this realised world, one where, if so inclined, you can boogie for as long as you're able to stand. Pop music aids and abets our dreams. But sometimes it creates them. And at other times still we cook dreams up on its behalf. That is, perhaps, what can make a pop picker devout.By the way, when was the Golden Age of the CD Single?

The Lyrics
From his early Liverpool days, through the historic decade of The Beatles, to Wings and his long solo career, The Lyrics pairs the definitive texts of 154 Paul McCartney songs with first-person commentaries on his life and music. Spanning two alphabetically arranged volumes, these commentaries reveal how the songs came to be and the people who inspired them: his devoted parents, Mary and Jim; his songwriting partner, John Lennon; his "Golden Earth Girl," Linda Eastman; his wife, Nancy McCartney; and even Queen Elizabeth, among many others. Here are the origins of "Let It Be," "Lovely Rita," "Yesterday," and "Mull of Kintyre," as well as McCartney's literary influences, including Shakespeare, Lewis Carroll, and Alan Durband, his high-school English teacher. With images from McCartney's personal archives--handwritten texts, paintings, and photographs, hundreds previously unseen--The Lyrics, spanning sixty-four years, becomes the definitive literary and visual record of one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

Applicazione Della Metodologia Lean Six SIGMA

Application of the Lean Six SIGMA Methodology
The development of this work is based on the application of the Lean Six Sigma program and Quality tools. The scope of the project comprises the processes associated with the import of raw materials used in the production of iron ore pellets produced by the mining company Samarco Minera癟瓊o and aims to reduce the high costs observed. In this scope, raw materials are referred to as inputs.Samarco Minera癟瓊o uses in its production process inputs imported from several countries and the disbursement with this group represented, in the period from 2010 to 2012, 30% of the total value of inputs, a cost index well above the historical spending on the import of these raw materials. The need to import is generated, in addition to other factors, by the limitation of the domestic market, therefore, it is essential that the import process is continuously improved. The Lean Six Sigma methodology is applied here as a business strategy to obtain the improvement of the import process control, reduction of its variability, stability of the process and, consequently, the financial return.
Singing Our Unsung Heroes
This book collates thematic reflections on Cameroon music exalting Manu Dibango, one of the first-generation Cameroonian musicians, who bowed to Covid-19 on 24 March 2020. Granted his enormous contribution to Cameroon, African and world music, one would have expected that scholarly books and encyclopaedia of recognition would be written in his honour prior to his demise. However, that was not the case. Like many other musicians in Cameroon, seemingly nothing substantial has been written about Manu Dibango and his music, with the exception, paradoxically, of his autobiography, Three Kilos of Coffee. What exists on this towering and humble giant of Cameroonian and African superstardom is scanty and mostly in the form of grey literature. We must learn to immortalise our artists and popular intellectuals beyond their entertainment value and the photo opportunities that we have with them in their lifetime. The inspiration for this book was drawn from the conviction that one of the best ways of honouring and valorising Manu Dibango would be by taking the cue from his music and then collecting essays generally on music, its role and impact in Cameroon, Africa and beyond.
The scene that would not die
'The Scene That Would Not Die: Twenty Years of Post-Millennial Punk In The UK' is the fifth and final book in Ian Glasper's acclaimed series documenting the UK punk scene, bringing to a conclusion his in-depth analysis of this most underground musical genre, that began with 2003's 'Burning Britain: A History of UK Punk 1980 - 1984'.Featuring 111 bands active since 2000, hundreds of exclusive new interviews and previously unseen photos, this book explores the many insidious challenges faced by the scene: hedonism, nostalgia and apolitical apathy, not to mention coronavirus, Brexit and the rise of social media completely removing the mystique that drew many to punk rock in the first place. All could have derailed lesser genres, and there are indeed many detractors that have pronounced punk as a creative force dead in the water. But the reality - if you scratch beneath the surface - is that punk has gone underground once again, and is as vibrant and relevant as it's always been; there are still thousands of angry youths making vital music the length and breadth of the nation, and they still don't need permission from anyone to have their say.648 pages. 234 x 156 x 40mm

Types, Psalms, and Prophecies
David Baron's bold work of Bible study identifies and connects passages of Old Testament scripture, noting how truths present in the psalms surface elsewhere.Beginning his commentary by stating his belief in the systematic qualities of the holy scriptures, Baron commences his investigation with a reading of Leviticus. The calendar and feast days related to Moses from the Lord serve as a staging ground for the author's readings. With the Sabbath came the organization of life for God's believers; a day of rest and contemplation, which forms the basis of the sacred calendar across the years. With this knowledge in hand, the author engages in close commentaries of pertinent psalms and prophetic passages found later in the Old Testament.Every chapter of this work begins with a full quotation of the psalm or verses examined. Baron examines the subject meticulously; proceeding verse by verse, and chapter by chapter, his annotations replete with detail. The structure of this book is relevant to the explanations, with each successive study establishing links and prophetic relevancies. Through the author's eye for detail and capable scholarship, we gain an appreciation for the richness and intricacy of the Old Testament's ancient lore.
Wagner
Festa and Music at the Court of Marie Casimire Sobieska in Rome (1699-1714)
Polish queen Marie Casimire Sobieska, French by birth, left the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after the death of her husband king John III and settled in Rome in 1699. Supported by her son, Prince Aleksander Sobieski, the queen dowager created at her Roman residence in Palazzo Zuccari one of Rome's most important opera theatres. She used music and drama to uphold her social status and political plans, satisfy her aesthetic needs, and provide entertainment for the granddaughter under her care, along with her ever more ailing son. This is the first monograph about Sobieska's music patronage. The book describes works by such eminent artists as Carlo S. Capece, Filippo Juvarra, and Domenico Scarlatti, along with the atmosphere of Rome of that time, the sociopolitical role of the festa, and the music theatre genres it employed.
Essays on the History of the Harp
There is no consensus among instrumentalists on the origin of the modern harp. Some believe it originated in the Mediterranean. Others believe the harp came from the northern Urals through the Baltics, Scandinavia and Celtic countries to central and southern Europe. More questions arise about the origin of the harp's name. In the article the author attempts to explain how its name arose among various European nations from a description of the manner in which the instrument is played. The musical history of Russia is rich in facts, which until now have remained little known even to specialists. Information from archival sources about constant contacts between the best musicians in Europe and wide circles of Russian music lovers can change an idea of the level of general and musical culture in the country, even in such a narrow field as that of harpists touring.
Loop Academic Educationalsoftware
A large proportion of computer and technology students face difficulties in the introductory programming disciplines, and this reflects a lack of preparation for the job market. To alleviate this problem, which also occurs in the most diverse areas of teaching, Educational Software has been used as a means to assist both the student and the teacher in the teaching-learning process. Therefore, this work seeks to develop the Client Sideof the main functionalities of the Educational Software Student Web module namedLoop Academic, developed in HTML5, CSS, JavaScript and other tools, whose target are the students of the curricular components that involve introductory programming. For this purpose, the methodology used consists in choosing the web development tools, studying the already existing prototype of the Student module, selecting the main functionalities and, finally, coding the front-end, resulting in a static system that will serve as a basis for future complementary work aimed at developing the other components of the Software.

The Cambridge Companion to Schubert’s ’winterreise’
Organized in five parts, this Companion enhances understanding of Schubert's Winterreise by approaching it from multiple angles. Part I examines the political, cultural, and musical environments in which Winterreise was created. Part II focuses on the poet Wilhelm M羹ller, his 24-poem cycle Die Winterreise, and changes Schubert made to it in fashioning his musical setting. Part III illuminates Winterreise by exploring its relation to contemporaneous understandings of psychology and science, and early nineteenth-century social and political conditions. Part IV focuses more directly on the song cycle, exploring the listener's identification with the cycle's protagonist, text-music relations in individual songs, Schubert's compositional 'fingerprints', aspects of continuity and discontinuity among the songs, and the cycle's relation to German Romanticism. Part V concentrates on Winterreise in the nearly two centuries since its completion in 1827, including lyrical and dramatic performance traditions, the cycle's influence on later composers, and its numerous artistic reworkings.

The Journey of a Fan
This edition of the book contains only the stories of the fans. It does not contain pictures. It is about an idol, a heartthrob, a song, a movie, an actor... That is where it all begins, one day and in one moment a life changes. Posters on a wall, cassette tapes, vinyl, a concert, a cry, a scream of what one teen felt was love, the biggest love of all, but as adults, it really is deeper than that. You will find out from deep down from the soul and respectfully from the heart of fans all over the world who share their passion, their tears and devotion about a man that has fulfilled years of their lives in ways, truly no one would understand, except the fan. With all respect and a devout fan base, we honor and are proud to engage with the public eye of what it really means. Many think it's surreal, but deep down it is a spiritual thing. Pianos, Toys, Music and Noise
Steve Beresford's polymathic activities have formed a prism for the UK improv scene since the 1970s. He is internationally known as a free improviser on piano, toy piano and electronics, composer for film and TV, and raconteur and Dadaist visionary. His r矇sum矇 is filled with collaborations with hundreds of musicians and other artists, including such leading improvisers as Derek Bailey, Evan Parker and John Zorn, and he has given performances of works by John Cage and Christian Marclay. In this book, Beresford is heard in his own words through first-hand interviews with the author. Beresford provides compelling insight into an extensive range of topics, displaying the broad cultural context in which music is embedded. The volume combines chronological and thematic chapters, with topics covering improvisation and composition in jazz and free music; the connections between art, entertainment and popular culture; the audience for free improvisation; writing music for films; recording improvised music in the studio; and teaching improvisation. It places Beresford in the context of improvised and related musics - jazz, free jazz, free improvisation - in which there is growing interest. The linear narrative is broken up by 'interventions' or short pieces by collaborators and commentators.
Berg
Alban Berg (1885-1935), a student of Arnold Schoenberg and one of the most prominent composers of the Second Viennese School, is counted among the pioneers of twelve-tone serialism. His circle included not only the musicians of the Wiener modern but also prominent literary and artistic figures from Vienna's brilliant fin-de-si癡cle. In his short lifetime he composed two ground-breaking operas, Wozzeck and Lulu, as well as chamber works, songs, and symphonic compositions. His final completed work, the deeply moving and elegiac Violin Concerto, is performed by leading soloists across the world. This new life-and-works study from authors Bryan R. Simms and Charlotte Erwin delivers a fresh perspective formed from comprehensive study of primary sources that reveal the forces that shaped Berg's personality, career, and artistic outlook. One such force was Berg's wife, Helene Nahowski Berg, and the book provides a unique assessment of her role in the composer's life and work, as well as her later quest to shape his artistic legacy in the forty-one years of her widowhood. The authors present insightful analysis of all of Berg's major works, bringing into play Berg's own analyses of the music, many of which have not been considered in existing scholarship. Berg is an accessible and all-encompassing resource for all readers who wish to learn about the life and music of this composer, one of the great figures in modern music.
Scary Monsters
Popular music and masculinity have rarely been examined through the lens of research into monstrosity. The discourses associated with rock and pop, however, actually include more 'monsters' than might at first be imagined. Attention to such individuals and cultures can say things about the operation of genre and gender, myth and meaning. Indeed, monstrosity has recently become a growing focus of cultural theory. This is in part because monsters raise shared concerns about transgression, subjectivity, agency, and community. Attention to monstrosity evokes both the spectre of projection (which invokes familial trauma and psychoanalysis) and shared anxieties (that in turn reflect ideologies and beliefs). By pursuing a series of insightful case studies, Scary Monsters considers different aspects of the connection between music, gender and monstrosity. Its argument is that attention to monstrosity provides a unique perspective on the study of masculinity in popular music culture.
Musical Nationalism, Despotism and Scholarly Interventions in Greek Popular Music
This book discusses the relationship between Greek Orthodox ecclesiastical music and laiko (popular) song in Greece. Laiko music was long considered a lesser form of music in Greece, with rural folk music considered serious enough to carry the weight of the ideologies founded within the establishment of the contemporary Greek state. During the 1940s and 1950s, a selective exoneration of urban popular music took place, one of its most popular cases being the originating relationships between two extremely popular musical pieces: Vasilis Tsitsanis's "Synnefiasmeni Kyriaki" (Cloudy Sunday) and its descent from the hymn "Ti Ypermacho" (The Akathist Hymn). During this period the connection of these two pieces was forged in the Modern Greek conscience, led by certain key figures in the authority system of the scholarly world. Through analysis of these pieces and the surrounding contexts, Ordoulidis explores the changing role and perception of popular music in Greece.
Sounding Jewish in Berlin
How can a traditional music with little apparent historical connection to Berlin become a way of hearing and making sense of the bustling German capital in the twenty-first century? In Sounding Jewish in Berlin, author Phil Alexander explores the dialogue between the city's contemporary klezmer scene and the street-level creativity that has become a hallmark of Berlin's decidedly modern urbanity and cosmopolitanism. By tracing how klezmer music engages with the spaces and symbolic meanings of the city, Alexander sheds light on how this Eastern European Jewish folk music has become not just a product but also a producer of Berlin. This engaging study of Berlin's dynamic Yiddish music scene brings together ethnomusicology, cultural studies, and urban geography to evoke the sounds, atmospheres, and performance spaces through which klezmer musicians have built a lively set of musical networks in the city. Transcending a restrictive framework that considers this music solely in the context of troubled German-Jewish history and notions of guilt and absence, Alexander shows how Berlin's current klezmer community--a diverse group of Jewish and non-Jewish performers--imaginatively blend the genre's traditional musical language with characteristically local tones to forge an adaptable and distinctively twenty-first-century version of klezmer. Ultimately, the music's vital presence in Berlin is powerful evidence that if traditional music is to remain audible amid the noise of the urban, it must become a meaningful part of that noise.
A Women’s History of the Beatles
A Women's History of the Beatles is the first book to offer a detailed presentation of the band's social and cultural impact as understood through the experiences and lives of women. Drawing on a mix of interviews, archival research, textual analysis, and autoethnography, this scholarly work depicts how the Beatles have profoundly shaped and enriched the lives of women, while also reexamining key, influential female figures within the group's history. Organized topically based on key themes important to the Beatles story, each chapter uncovers the varied and multifaceted relationships women have had with the band, whether face-to-face and intimately or parasocially through mediated, popular culture. Set within a socio-historical context that charts changing gender norms since the early 1960s, these narratives consider how the Beatles have affected women's lives across three generations. Providing a fresh perspective of a well-known tale, this is a cultural history that moves far beyond the screams of Beatlemania to offer a more comprehensive understanding of what the now iconic band has meant to women over the course of six decades.
Resonant Recoveries
Coping with trauma and the losses of World War I was a central concern for French musicians in the interwar period. Almost all of them were deeply affected by the war as they fought in the trenches, worked in military hospitals, or mourned a friend or relative who had been wounded, killed, or taken prisoner. In Resonant Recoveries, author Jillian C. Rogers argues that French modernist composers processed this experience of unprecedented violence by turning their musical activities into locations for managing and performing trauma. Through analyses of archival materials, French medical, philosophical, and literary texts, and the music produced between the wars, Rogers frames World War I as a pivotal moment in the history of music therapy. When musicians and their audiences used music to remember lost loved ones, perform grief, create healing bonds of friendship, and find consolation in soothing sonic vibrations and rhythmic bodily movements, they reconfigured music into an embodied means of consolation--a healer of wounded minds and bodies. This in-depth account of the profound impact that postwar trauma had on French musical life makes a powerful case for the importance of addressing trauma, mourning, and people's emotional lives in music scholarship.
