Choral Artistry
Choral Artistry provides a practical and organic approach to teaching choral singing and sight-reading. Songs of Praise was first published in 1925, and is still an immensely popular hymnbook, particularly in schools. The compilation falls into two parts: Book 1 contains hymns grouped by subject and theme, together with a selection of verses, canticles and doxologies; Book 2 contains general hymns listed alphabetically by first line.
Endongo
The theme of this book is the "Significance of Folk Musical Instruments." I was prompted to write this book because, from an early age, I was fascinated not only by the visible appearances of folk instruments, but also by the entertainment roles I saw those instruments perform during the cultural events. So, as I went to advanced studies in ethnomusicology, I became very interested in organology, which is a sub-branch that deals with the evolution and development of musical instruments. The more I tried to learn how to play a number of folk instruments from different global cultures, the more I realized that folk instruments are used not only as objects that may sound differently, but also as tools used differently from culture to culture to enhance the respective cultural events, rituals and ceremonies. Therefore, this book on Endongo, presents to the interested or curious reader/s the opportunity to see and appreciate the role/s, meaning/s, and significance folk musical instruments have or play in cultures. Differently put, this book offers the would be curious reader/s the opportunity to examine and realize that folk musical instruments in all cultural traditions are more than just sound production objects. By reading this book, one would realize that there are also a number of inter-related subdisciplines the collectivity of which are realized and culminate not only in the construction process of the instrument/s, but also in the cultural functions for which folk instruments are used. Summarily put, this Endongo book is a case study that reveals the critically important folk cultural values that eventually reflect both the aesthetic and the symbolic meanings attached to folk musical instruments by cultures.About the AuthorThe author, Dr. James K. Makubuya, is by profession both a teacher and performing musician. He received his B.A. in Music and English Literature from Makerere University, Uganda, then a Master of Music in Western Classical Music from the Catholic Univ. of America, Washington DC, and finally a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of California Los Angeles. This book was written while he was serving as an associate professor of music at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, IN. USA. He has and continues to make frequent trips to many different countries to do fieldwork projects examining the meaning and significance of folk music and musical instruments in the respective musical traditions and cultures. As an accomplished instrumentalist, dancer and choreographer, James has had the opportunity to study with several master musicians from various musical traditions from East and West Africa as well as Japan. With a disciplinary focus and fieldwork research in ethnomusicology, his published articles have appeared in the Galpin Society Journal, Journal of African Music, Society for Ethnomusicology Journal, and the International Harp Journal. The author has performed music concerts at Carnegie Hall, New York City, NY. Museum of Making Music, Carlsbad, CA., Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brooklyn, NY., Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, NM., Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, NY., and the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Ottawa, Canada. Before coming to the US., he was also the artistic director of CACEMCHO, which was Uganda's Catholic national choir of 150 people. He led that choir to several successful international performance tours. The latter included tours to Israel, Italy and Germany. In Rome, Italy, he conducted a choir performance during a mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Basilica. James has also performed on the soundtrack to the movie Mississipi Masala and several television movies and documentaries. To the present day, he has made and released three CD recordings including: (i) The Uganda Tropical Beat, (ii). Taata Wange, and (iii). Watik, Watik: Music from Uganda.

Piano Technical Exercises for Fingers Independence and Coordination
These piano technical exercises are based on the author's years of piano practice experiments and provide the optimum level of practice for refining the abilities of and coordination between fingers. Although some exercises are similar to other piano technical training studies, such as the exercises by Louis Plaidy, Camille-Marie Stamaty, Isidor Philipp, Godowsky, Liszt and Brahms etc., and some of them are vaguely similar to some pianists' private finger exercises, this Volume II score by the author is a continuation of the Volume I, which is more comprehensive, systematic, detailed, complete, and reliable for training the independence and coordination of each finger, especially with regard to the fingers' physical movements. It should be noted that the exercises in this score are designed only for mechanical technical training and improvement of the finger movements and not for musicality.
Julian Arcas
Who would have thought you could play classical music on a ukulele? But you can! Here are compositions from the 19th Century - the Romantic Era - transcribed for the Low G ukulele. Juli獺n Arcas (1832-1882) was a Spanish classical guitarist and composer. He was born in Almer穩a and died in Antequera, Spain. Arcas performed all over Europe from 1860 through 1880 where a young Francisco T獺rrega listened to him in 1862 in Castell籀n and played for him after the performance. Arcas then invited T獺rrega to study with him in Barcelona. Arcas wrote fifty-two original works and transcribed thirty pieces for the guitar, including waltzes, variations, preludes, and dances. Through the work of the guitar maker Antonio de Torres, Arcas influenced the development of the classical guitar, particularly concerning the design of the soundboard. These pieces are somewhat more complex and are for intermediate to advanced players. Have fun!
Sixtus Kargel
Sixtus Kargel, 1540 - 1593, was a German lutenist and composer. His first recorded publication, a lost print of 1569, appeared at Mainz, Germany. The ten pieces selected for this transcription come from his 1574 publication and include four Fantasias, three Pasamezos, and three Saltarellos which are delightful variations on each of the preceding Pasamezos. dis/cord
dis/cord is an experiment in reading sound. Embarking from Karen Barad's early work on agential realism, it diffracts quantum physics through sound art, finding the sympathetic resonances that allow them to speak together. dis/cord believes in the materialism of sound, and strives not to understand it, but to become entangled with it. It asserts that impartial observation is impossible and understands immersion as a participatory and collaborative act. Sound art pieces provide the backdrop for a series of reflections on space, time, and matter. They trace the "marks on bodies" that sound leaves behind in its ephemeral vibration, finding new forms of sensation and interpretation through the pain and hearing loss that a life devoted to sound can cause.Drifting between sound studies, artistic research, musicology, and craftsmanship, dis/cord uses agential realism as a platform to approach thinking with, through, and about sound. Jose Broca, (1805 - 1882), was a Spanish composer and a student of Dionisio Aguado. He was born in Reus, a province of Tarragona, and was later established in Barcelona. There, Broc獺 earned great renown for his playing of works by Sor and Aguado, and as a teacher. He was a friend of Julian Arcas and the teacher of Jose Ferrer and Felipe Pedrell. Broc獺's works are elegant pieces in a similar style to that of Francisco Tarrega but written much earlier.

Blankness in Alligatoah’s song Musik ist keine Lösung
Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Musicology - Contemporary music, grade: 1,0, course: German Music and Politics, language: English, abstract: This paper explores the blankness in Alligatoah's music using Daniel Chua's theory about blankness in music. Lukas Strobel (known as "Alligatoah") refers to himself as an acting rapper, which is why one cannot connect his music with the person behind the pseudonym. By creating an abundance of characters, he manages to create a blankness that allows his music to be used in different contexts. As a consequence, Alligatoah's songs have been appropriated in the past. Alligatoah's song Musik ist keine L繹sung is the title track of his fourth studio album that came out in 2015. The song accuses political music of not having an effect and states that political singers depend on political problems in order to fulfill their passion. The narrative claims that music cannot be the solution for any political or societal issues. However, the audiovisual support of the music video provides a greater depth of the work and proves not only the blankness of Alligatoah's musical creation but also of him as an artist.
Heiner Goebbels and Curatorial Composing After Cage
This Element introduces the notion of curatorial composing to account for certain musical practices that emerged from the 1960s as the founding concepts of music as an art - instituted in the modern era - were systematically dismantled. It raises the key question of how musical value and authority might be produced without recourse to an external principle, origin, transcendental framework, or other foundation. It argues that these practices do not dismiss the issue of value or simply relativise it but shift the paradigm to a curatorial concern for composing public encounters and staging events. The Element shows that Lydia Goehr's elaboration of the work-concept provides a framework that was transformed by John Cage in his work from 0'00" (1962) onwards. A Performer's Guide to the Piano Music of Samuel Adler
This comprehensive study of the piano music of award-winning American composer Samuel Adler will interest pianists, teachers, and anyone interested in the musical art of our day.
