Emil von Sauer
Emil von Sauer carried the torch of the Romantic piano repertoire well into the twentieth century. He won the French Legion of Honor, The Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal, and Austrian peerage, among many other honors. He edited all of Brahms's piano compositions, much of Liszt, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin, and some Beethoven. A brilliant pianist, prolific composer, and noted pedagogue, Sauer founded the Vienna Conservatory Piano Master School. Beloved in his adopted home of Vienna, he died two weeks after performing with the Vienna Philharmonic at their centenary celebration. Sauer's life presents a compelling story woven through success, fame, economic adversity, two world wars, and persecution of his family by the Nazis. This is a story about honor, perseverance, and courage.
Singing Well to the End of Life
The author is a well known singer in NYC. The book is a compilation of the best ideas about how to sing well technically with the greatest technical accuracy, bearing in mind that each singer will approach singing in a slightly different manner. The greatest pitfall as a solo singer is becoming part of a large chorus where the solo singer is encouraged to sing heartily, but off the breath. Knowing how to sing on the breath is not altogether spontaneous. Being part of a large chorus and singing full out can be damaging to a light voice. The devil is in the balance of the correct vocal placement of each individual voice. That takes a special teacher with well educated ears. The book is squarely focused on the free and accurate balance of the solo voice. Choruses allow for very imprecise singing. Many light soprano voices in particular can suffer damage before they are mature enough singers to recognize what precise vocal aduction is (ie the manner in which the vocal folds come together to create a sound). This book tries to address that very common problem. Sue Hassel sang as soon as she could walk. Many mistakes were made with her voice by teachers who didn't sing as soloists. This book addresses the most common issues and illustrates and discusses simple solutions. There is a very solid correlation between singing well and dancing well in a beginning ballet class. Sue Hassel relies heavily on simple ballet moves to keep her voice in good condition to this day.
Offenbach Performance in Budapest, 1920-1956
As a legacy of the Habsburg Empire, performances of Jacques Offenbach's musical stage works played an important role in Budapest musico-theatrical life in the twentieth century. However, between the collapse of the Empire and the 1956 anti-Soviet revolution, political ideologies strongly influenced the character of these productions, when they took place. Public performances of Offenbach's works were prohibited between 1938 and 1945 and they became the bases for propagandadistic adaptations in the 1950s. This element explores how the local operetta tradition and the vogue of operettas featuring composers as characters during the interwar period were also important factors in how Offenbach's stage works were performed in mid-twentieth century Budapest in versions that sometimes bore little resemblance to the originals.
Morton Feldman’s Piano and String Quartet

Dancer, choreographer, educator and therapist Emilyn Claid draws inspiration from her personal and professional experiences to explore alternative approaches to being present in the world. For more than 150 years, individuals have traveled the countryside with pen, paper, tape recorders, and even video cameras to document versions of songs, music, and stories shared by communities. As technologies and methodologies have advanced, the task of gathering music has been taken up by a much broader group than scholars. The resulting collections created by these various people can be impacted by the individual collectors' political and social concerns, cultural inclinations, and even simple happenstance, demonstrating a crucial yet underexplored relationship between the music and those preserving it. Collecting Music in the Aran Islands, a critical historiographical study of the practice of documenting traditional music, is the first to focus on the archipelago off the west coast of Ireland. Deirdre N穩 Chonghaile argues for a culturally equitable framework that considers negotiation, collaboration, canonization, and marginalization to fully understand the immensely important process of musical curation. In presenting four substantial, historically valuable collections from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, she illustrates how understanding the motivations and training (or lack thereof) of individual music collectors significantly informs how we should approach their work and contextualize their place in the folk music canon.
