The Life and Music of Elizabeth Maconchy
The first full-length biographical study of Elizabeth Maconchy (1907-1994). The British-born Irish composer (Dame) Elizabeth Maconchy (1907-1994) is best known today for her cycle of thirteen string quartets, composed over five decades. And yet, her oeuvre ranges from large scale choral works, to ballets, operas, and symphonic scores. Having studied with Charles Wood and Ralph Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music, many of her compositions also garnered accolades from peers and established musical figures such as Gustav Holst, Donald Francis Tovey, and Henry Wood, among others. With access to a wealth of documentation previously unavailable, this book explores Maconchy's life and music within a greater consideration of the social and political context of the world in which she lived. While the influence of Bart籀k has been well documented, this book reveals the equally potent influence of Vaughan Williams on Maconchy's musical idiom. This book also discusses Maconchy's foray into administration and her advocacy of young composers through her work as the first woman to be elected Chairman of the Composers' Guild of Great Britain in 1959 and President of the Society for the Promotion of New Music following the death of Benjamin Britten in 1976. It will be required reading for those interested in the lives of women composers, twentieth-century British music, and musical modernism.
Tonality, Measured
Musicians have the encouragement to "just feel it" in their creative process. While that should always remain a factor, now you can have an encyclopedic knowledge of various scales and chords to inform your music-making decisions. This book expands upon pre-existing concepts of tonality to differentiate and quantify brightness, happiness, and expressiveness. Exploring a new dimension, metatonality, will deepen your understanding of how each scale and chord feels.

Gender, Sexuality, and Meaning
Assimilation v. Integration in Music Education engages with an existential question for American conservatories and orchestras: What does it mean to diversify Western classical music? Many institutions have focused solely on diversifying the demography of their participants, but without a deeper conversation about structural oppression in classical music, this approach continues to isolate and exclude students of color. Rooted in the author's experience working with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) students at a major American conservatory, this book articulates the issues facing minority students in conservatories and schools of music, going beyond recruitment to address the cultural issues that alienate students. The author argues that the issue of diversity should be approached through the lens of aesthetics, and that the performance and pedagogy of Western classical music must change if a more diverse membership is to thrive in this genre.Reflecting on the author's experience through the lens of recent critical theory in music education, this volume presents the viewpoints of Black and Latinx music students in their own words. Addressing the impact of racialized aesthetics on the well-being of BIPOC music students, the author shows how students are alienated when attempting to assimilate into conservatory environments and envisions an alternative, integrative approach to conservatory education. Offering a deep dive into the psychological and cultural reasons for the racialization of Western classical music, and potential institutional solutions, this concise book is relevant to performers, students, and institutional leaders.
The Pastoral in Charles Griffes’s Music
At the turn of the century, visionary composer Charles Tomlinson Griffes synthesized highly diverse elements from other musical traditions into his distinct artistic voice. As American as he was far ranging in his interests, Griffes was an aesthetic polyglot, combining elements of literature, visual arts, global folk melodies, and contemporary European art music into a new musical language. The breadth of his sources of inspiration are breathtaking, including the sensual harmonies of fin-de-si癡cle French music, the British Aesthetic Movement, folk music drawn from the Middle East and Java, and a wide range of poets, including William Blake, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and William Sharp. The Pastoral in Charles Griffes's Music explores both his music and the rich historical context from which it grew to enrich our understanding of the composer's artistic contribution and reveal new intersections and contradictions in European and American culture during the early twentieth century. Taylor A. Greer also critiques the philosophical foundation of topic theory and its relationship to the pastoral in Griffes's music to reflect on the end of the nineteenth century and clarify our understanding of his artistic influences. With Griffes's conception of the pastoral, he transformed the siciliana-based tradition he inherited from the eighteenth century into a new and vibrant genre that preserved the usual associations of simplicity and tranquility and introduced new elements of tension into the pastoral ideal, including global voices, paradox, and occasional conflict.

Handbell Ringers Bible
This is the thoroughly revised 2023 "Handbell Ringers Bible". I listened to all your comments and have made this even more comprehensive and easier to learn from.A set of handbells creates ONE musical instrument. They are always 'in tune, ' and most ringers play only two bells plus their accidental, making it one of the easiest musical instruments to learn and a lot of fun to play. Having said that, to play any instrument well, you need to study and practice. You don't need to be a musician to begin to play bells but you will be a musician once you have mastered the instrument and its techniques. If you can count to four and know your left from your right, you have the necessary qualifications. You don't need a deep understanding of music theory. I have selected the parts of music that you do need, making it as simple as possible. It is all too common for new handbell ringers to be thrown in at the deep end with just a short explanation of how to ring the bell, and off they go playing in an existing handbell choir. I have created this Method Book, full explanation of all the terms and techniques, training videos as well as handbell music notation to make learning handbells more structured and informative.
Community-Engaged Performance Tours
Community-Engaged Performance Tours addresses the role of performance touring as a form of classroom and community engagement. Performance tours have long been a part of the collegiate and high school music ensemble experience, bringing student bands, choirs, and orchestras into connection with a wide variety of audiences, venues, and cultural contexts. This book presents a new approach to the performance tour that integrates touring with community engagement and service-learning. Emphasizing reciprocity, cross-cultural exchange, and global awareness, the author addresses how visiting ensembles can work with host communities instead of performing for them. The book includes student and community perspectives and case studies from the author's experience leading university wind symphony tours in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and provides a practical and hands-on model for ensemble leaders and educators.
Rītigaula
This book, authored by the late Princeton music scholar Harold Powers, discusses a single Indian rāga called Rītigaula. Rītigaula's pitch structure, conventions surrounding its performance, and its treatment in historical Indian music treatises are comprehensively described. Powers's unique approach to theorizing rāga examines rāga structure and meaning in this monograph too, from the perspective of musical communication and discourse. From within this perspective, Powers shares his thoughts about music's connection to language, and the relationship between rāga expression and linguistic communication.

The Concept of Polymediality
During the composition of "Strophes" (2003), in which the architectonic features of a high-tech factory influenced various parameters of the work such as the production of sounds, Marios Joannou Elia developed the concept of polymediality. This involved two dimensions: the work-immanent compositional dimension and polymediality in the process of staging. The prefix poly denotes a qualitative paradigm shift; not a quantitative much, but a qualitative, polyaesthetic more. Written between 2007 and 2010 as a commentary focused on his opera "Die Jagd" (2008) and the orchestral piece "Akanthai" (2009), this book illuminates Elia's concept of polymediality and, by providing a wealth of examples, how literary sources become an inherent polymedial element of his music. At the same time, the commentary elucidates a series of fundamental aspects of the music, including the model of imitative interaction, the concept of permanent fleetingness, the concept of polyaesthestics, and the question of musico-literary intermediality.
How to Write Melodies
Melody is the true heart of music--the identity of a composition, the vessel that carries the lyrics, the tune that you keep whistling on your way home from a concert. Composing melodies is often thought of as a mysterious process--a lightning bolt of inspiration delivered by the songwriter's muse--but in fact melody is an art that can be learned, honed, and perfected. This book teaches that art in an engaging and thoroughly accessible fashion. Starting from basics, it covers the essentials--rhythm, intervals, scales, and harmony--and builds on these simple principles to offer a wealth of advanced techniques and tricks. Every musical example in the book is accompanied by a downloadable audio track, allowing songwriters to increase their understanding of melody through both sight and sound. How to Write Melodies is the only guide you'll ever need for demystifying and perfecting the art of melody writing.

Musical Agency and the Social Listener
Music as a narrative drama is an intriguing idea, which has captured explicit music theoretical attention since the nineteenth century. Investigations into narrative characters or personae has evolved into a sub-field--musical agency. In this book, Palfy contends that music has the potential to engage us in social processes and that those processes can be experienced as a social interaction with a musical agent. She explores the overlap between the psychological processes in which we participate in order to understand and engage with people, and those we engage in when we listen to music. Thinking of musical agency as a form of social process is quite different from existing theoretical frameworks for agency. It implies that we come to musical analysis by way of intuition--that our ideas are already partially formed based on our experience of the piece (and what it makes us feel or how it makes us sense it as any other) when we choose to analyze and interpret it. Palfy's focus on social processes is a very effective way to pinpoint when and why it is that our attention is captured and engaged by musical agents.

The Music of Space
Since the early days of motion picture production, film scores have helped define our emotional and aesthetic perception of stories on screen--particularly with space movies and television. The music from The Day the Earth Stood Still, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and others has helped define the public's awareness of space almost as much as the films themselves. In some cases, they have redefined the norms of film music. Star Wars not only revived the popularity of orchestral film scores but also helped stimulate an increased public interest in classical orchestral music around the world. This work explores the music and the composers who have helped define the sound of space for over a century, transforming how we perceive space and even inspiring greater interest in space exploration. This book also details how music has been performed and played in space since the early days of the "space race."

Making a Joyful Noise
As the triumphant and majestic sound of the tonally redesigned organ gave way to thunderous applause from an audience that jumped to their feet, having no intention of waiting for the lights to come up, the evening's silent film The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) came to an end. Young and old alike marveled at the virtuosity of Clark Wilson and his command of the fifty-three-rank symphonic organ. The road to this splendid film event stretches back 127 years. In the mid-1890s The Organ Club rapidly moved to provide St. John's Lutheran, Bellevue, Ohio, with a pipe organ. The John Sole tracker, 1895-1933, served the parish leading Lutheran services and anniversary celebrations until a larger organ was needed to fill those roles. From 1934-1959, the Knapp Memorial Organ picked up where the Sole organ left off. No detailed records of this organ exist. With the growth of the parish a larger church edifice was built and a "new" pipe organ from the Toledo Pipe Organ Company (TPOC) was installed in 1961-62. After serving St. John's until 1997, the Bunn Minnick Pipe Organ Company of Columbus, Ohio, removed the TPOC organ for repair, re-wiring, re-leathering, and expansion, which eventually brought the instrument to its present fifty-three ranks. The Bunn Minnick organ, 1997-2017, evolved from purely religious duties to a wider use for public concerts and films. The final act in the history of the organs of St. John's occurred with the major tonal re-design of the Bunn Minnick instrument from 2018-2021. This historical monograph traces in detail the development of these four organs, their evolving use, and the parishioners, citizenry and youth of Bellevue, Ohio, that contributed to this 127-year-old musical journey.
Seeking Connections
Music connects the lives of students, teachers, and school communities in many ways. Music is also integrally related to other art forms, history, culture, and other subjects commonly taught in schools. These relationships deserve critical attention, particularly as educators seek to reorient their curricula and pedagogy toward the pressing aims of social justice. Seeking Connections encourages interdisciplinarity as a capacity to be exercised-an orientation or habit of mind that teachers and students can develop. This capacity depends upon viewing music as permeable, recognizing that music influences related ways of knowing, just as related ways of knowing influence music. This book invites teachers to create educational experiences that engage students in exploring an expansive relationship with music. With imaginative examples drawn from diverse musical genres, visual art, poetry, and historical cases, Seeking Connections provides thoughtful principles, models, and instructional strategies to deepen students' understandings of musical works and inspire interdisciplinary inquiry throughout elementary and secondary music programs, as well as settings in music teacher education and professional development.

Antarctica
This is the first book whose subject is the music, sounds and silences of Antarctica. From 2011 until 2014, Australia marked its long-standing connection with Antarctica by celebrating the centenary of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. The icy continent, with its extremes of climate and environment and unique soundscapes, offers great potential for creative achievements in the world of music and sound. This book demonstrates the intellectual and creative engagement of artists, musicians, scientists and writers. Consciousness of sounds - in particular, musical ones - has not been at the forefront of our aims in polar endeavours, but listening to and appreciating them has been as important there as elsewhere.
