Modes for Guitar
The first thing that I want to say about modes is that Modes are not a difficult concept. What they are is a very difficult concept to explain.Once it clicks, you'll not believe how simple and easily applicable an idea they are. That's not to say it won't take some work. There are no ludicrous, "One neat trick." BS promises in here but anyone can understand modes and learn to apply them in any key anywhere on the neck.Twenty years or so ago when I was trying to get to grips with Modes, concepts of keys, key signatures, different scale shapes, multiple scale positions and lots more created so much noise that I couldn't see the simple answers in front of me. Nowadays it's probably even more confusing for inexperienced players with so much misinformation online and so many people showing off on YouTube thinly veiled as teaching before they really understand what they are talking about.By the end of this book you will understand what modes are, the unique combination of intervals that gives each mode its distinctive flavour, how they are formed and how you can play them in any key anywhere on the neck.

The Saxophone Book
About THE SAXOPHONE BOOK... THE SAXOPHONE BOOK comes from the innovative and creative mind of 3x Grammy winning saxophonist Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band/Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, the Mu'tet). This 3-volume set is an extraordinarily thoughtful dissection and presentation of the musical fundamentals that Jeff calls "The Big 5". 1) Listening 2) Tone/Dynamics 3) Articulation 4) Rhythm/Time 5) Harmony Why FUNDAMENTALS? Jeff believes that fundamentals are the 'roots' of musical learning and, in order for the student to grow, they need strong roots. These books help develop and/or strengthen the fundamentals using a variety of creative and fun musical concepts, exercises, and ideas. From developing life long practice habits to sharing personal and philosophical ideas about music and musical spirit, Coffin has codified, and now made available, the wide array of materials that have made him one of the most recognized and sought after players, and educators, on today's scene. How to USE THE SAXOPHONE BOOK... It's very simple. A metronome, tuner, patience, and good practice habits are all you need. These books are designed to allow students to 'self-progress'. However, Jeff always recommends some kind of consistent private instruction when possible. To get started, read through the intro pages. Then, start with Book 1, exercise #1. Choose a slow tempo on your metronome and start playing. Move your tempo up as you get more comfortable with each exercise. These exercises should be repeated. Many times. Remember, it's a PROCESS. Through repetition comes magic... The RESULTS... The results are many and will occur rapidly! Superior listening, tone, dynamics, intonation, articulation, rhythm, time, and a deep understanding of harmony are all results of working on fundamentals. Every musician i know continues to work on the fundamentals throughout their career. It's a never ending process. When the student has made a thoughtful study of these 3 volumes, they will have a much deeper understanding of the fundamentals as well as a high level of technical proficiency and musical competency on their instrument. These are also great books for a more seasoned player looking for different ways of approaching material they have already studied. This is a tried and true method! A little HISTORY... For well over 15 years, since the early Bela Fleck & the Flecktones days (late 20th Century), Coffin has worked on and developed this material. He began compiling exercises for his students in Finale, and later Sibelius, so as to avoid writing the same things out time and again. This snowballed into Jeff entering hundreds of pages of his personal exercises into the computer. What you see here is the result of that work. Literally, hundreds, and likely, thousands of hours have been spent putting these books together in as concise and clear a way as possible to benefit the student. But, what to call it? After hours of deliberation, brainstorming, looking up words in the dictionary, writing down combinations of words and phrases on paper, and mumbling to himself through a closed hand so as to not be heard mumbling to himself, Coffin finally came up with an astonishingly brilliant title...THE SAXOPHONE BOOK - Ok, maybe it's not so astonishing but it seems appropriate since every time Jeff talked about it he would start off by saying "So, I'm writing this saxophone book..."

Music and Embodied Cognition
Taking a cognitive approach to musical meaning, Arnie Cox explores embodied experiences of hearing music as those that move us both consciously and unconsciously. In this pioneering study that draws on neuroscience and music theory, phenomenology and cognitive science, Cox advances his theory of the "mimetic hypothesis," the notion that a large part of our experience and understanding of music involves an embodied imitation in the listener of bodily motions and exertions that are involved in producing music. Through an often unconscious imitation of action and sound, we feel the music as it moves and grows. With applications to tonal and post-tonal Western classical music, to Western vernacular music, and to non-Western music, Cox's work stands to expand the range of phenomena that can be explained by the role of sensory, motor, and affective aspects of human experience and cognition.
Remixing the Classroom
In a delightfully self-conscious philosophical "mash-up," Randall Everett Allsup provides alternatives for the traditional master-apprentice teaching model that has characterized music education. By providing examples across the arts and humanities, Allsup promotes a vision of education that is open, changing, and adventurous at heart. He contends that the imperative of growth at the core of all teaching and learning relationships is made richer, though less certain, when it is fused with a student's self-initiated quest. In this way, the formal study of music turns from an education in teacher-directed craft and moves into much larger and more complicated fields of exploration. Through vivid stories and evocative prose, Randall Everett Allsup advocates for an open, quest-driven teaching model that has repercussions for music education and the humanities more generally.

On Voice
The essays collected here raise a simple but rarely asked question: just what, exactly, is voice? From this founding question, many others proliferate: Is voice an animal category, as Aristotle thought? Or is it distinctively human? Is it essentially related to language? To music? To song and singing? Is it a mark of presence or of absence? Is it a kind of object? How is our sense of voice affected by the development of recording technology? The authors in this volume approach such questions primarily by turning away from a general idea of voice and instead investigating what can be learned by attending to the qualities and acts of particular voices. The range is wide: from Poe's "Leigeia" to Woolf's The Waves, from Jussi Bj繹rling to Waltraud Meier, from song to oratorio to opera and beyond. Throughout, consistent with the volume's origin in papers delivered at the eighth biennial meeting of the International Association for Word and Music Studies, the role of voice in joining or separating words and music is paramount. These studies address key topics in musicology, literary criticism, philosophy, aesthetics, and performance studies, and will also appeal to practicing musicians.

The Songwriter Voice
An absolutely superb book - Jane Eamon, Ian Thomas, Shari Ulrich, Stephen Fearing, Mae Moore, David Essig and many more songwriters - share their thoughts on what it means to be a songwriter... filled with insightful comments on their lives and love for their craft - a truly engaging and captivating read - highly recommended - Michael B Davie, author, Poetry for the Insane - The Full Mental From the author: In all my years of being a songwriter, I have spent countless hours drawing other folks into the circle, getting them to open up and look at their own journeys, teaching them the value of letting others in, of allowing feedback and constructive criticism to help them grow.... without the interaction of outsiders, we would never experience chaos. And chaos promotes change and growth. It is essential to the community... We all have tribes - family, close friends, associates, people who think like we do. But a tribe cannot be exclusive. It has to attract and deal with outsiders on a regular basis. And it's those very same outsiders that change us... This book was my drawing together of the tribe, the tribe of songwriters. I wanted to include them in the conversations I've had in my head for years. I wanted to find out what made them desire to be songwriters. And I am so grateful that they answered the call. It's important for us to hear what others are doing, how they deal with the very same issues we all face... - Jane Eamon
Structural Functions of Harmony
The earlier chapters recapitulate in condensed form the principles laid down in his Theory of Harmony; the later chapters break entirely new ground, for they analyze the system of key relationships within the structure of whole movements and affirm the principle of "monotonality," showing how all modulations within a movement are merely deviations from, and not negations of, its main tonality. Schoenberg's argument is supported by music examples, which range from entire development sections of classical symphonies to analyses of the experimental harmonic progressions of Strauss, Debussy, Reger, and Schoenberg's own early music. The final chapter, "Apollonian Evaluation of a Dionysian Epoch," discusses the music of our time, with particular reference to the possibility of new methods of harmonic analysis.Structural Functions of Harmony is a standard work on its subject and provides an invaluable key to the development of musical structure during the last two hundred and fifty years. This new edition, with corrections, a new preface, and an index of subject headings, has been prepared under the editorial supervision of Leonard Stein.
Technic Etudes
The goal of these twenty etudes is to address various issues of guitar technique while presenting pieces which have melodic content, are interesting and fun to play and which can be used in concert or recital. Fragmented scale runs, scales ascending and descending several octaves, switching positions amidst musical phrases, arpeggio picking, string skipping and combining open and fingered strings are some of the issues addressed in these compositions. In Notatation and Tablature.
