Earned Acreage
European Kings and Queens no longer controlled the actions of the horde of indomitable colonists that had settled the Eastern Seaboard of America. These early settlers had rebelled against the English Crown and launched a new country. Following the discoveries of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, a migration from the East followed the beckoning sun west into the wilderness. They traveled by wagon, by horseback, or just walked...but they moved Westward. These pioneers, these seekers of fortune or just adventure, comprised a great migration of folks. Some were na簿ve, some were corrupt, some foolish, while others exhibited vast amounts of courage and an indomitable will to achieve a better life, fame, or fortune. But in coming west, they all shared in the building of a nation that stretched from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. The Defiant Carolinians and its sequel, Earned Acreage, tell their story.

Marking the Land 1
A road trip from Santa Fe to Santa Monica was the genesis of Marking the Land 1, which presents photographs taken on highways and byways that cut through the vastness of the American Southwest. In documenting sites separated from one another by hundreds of miles, Melissa Cicetti sought to explore and expand her understanding of the concept of place. She characterizes sites that have been made specific by the interaction between various areas of the land and the human-made forms imposed on them.Cicetti's interest in architecture is reflected in many of the photos, which include abandoned structures--barns, churches, gas stations, Anasazi ruins. Fences and wires impose human patterns on the desert landscape even though the photographs never include people."A sequence of documented, personal moments through which the viewer can come to terms with the photographer's concept of place and the role humans have played over the centuries and always will play in marking places in the land and assigning them meaning."--Barbara Buhler Lynes, Introduction

Aeschylus, Character, and the Yoke of Necessity
Aeschylus, Character, and the Yoke of Necessityconsiders the works of Aeschylus in the context of the playwright's handling of dramatic character and the conflict between freedom and compulsion. Aeschylus was an Athenian citizen during the first generation of that polis's democratic system. As such, he and his contemporaries were encountering a kind of free agency unknown before in history. Aeschylus presents the archetype of the "tragedy of character" that will resonate throughout world literature. It is a fascinating and essential component to the conception of his drama that his protagonists each of the six plays find ways of escaping freedom in exchange for a self-imposed spiritual bondage. They "slip [their] necks into the yoke of necessity," to borrow a pivotal line from the Agamemnon. Caught between their individual motives and the unavoidable necessity of their situation, each protagonist handles this conflict in a way that defines the specificity of their character and results in the development of the plot. This book also explores the frequently dominant position of the Aeschylean chorus.
