Every Pill I Took: 2000-2001
In our pill-happy society there is a pill for everything. Corporate legal drug dealers, aka Big Pharma, have for decades put design thought into clever pill presses and multicolored gel-caps to distinguish their products and attract buyers. So too, in the 1990s and 2000s when ecstasy swept the club and rave scenes, the branding of pills was essential to the marketing, a way for the user to identify a good high from cold medicine or a batch of poison. Ecstasy branding was often based on well-known corporate logos. Easily identified, pill makers latched onto the brand recognition of our corporate society subverting the brands at the same time. A process the cultural critic Carlo McCormick says "collapses the ever-convergent space between subversive youth culture and acquiescent mainstream passive consumption." While working as a nightlife photographer, New York-based Michael Lorenzini became fascinated by the design details in ecstasy tablets and wanted to document this underground art form. He proceeded to photograph every pill he took from 2000-2001. Although jewel-like in their tiny colorful forms, the macro photographs, shot on slide film with an extreme macro lens, reveal hidden imperfections and textured landscapes. The Lives, Lore, and Literature of Cranes
This book provides basic information on cranes that should be of interest and importance to crane-loving birders ("craniacs") as well as to ornithologists and wildlife managers. Primary consideration is given to the sandhill and whooping cranes, but all 13 of the Old World cranes are also discussed. Special consideration is given to the relative abundance and conservation status of all of the world's species, of which nearly half are declining and a few are in real danger of long-term survival. More than 80 refuges and preserves in the United States and Canada, where the best chances of seeing cranes in the wild exist, are described, as are several zoos and bird parks with notable crane collections. Descriptions of 16 North American annual crane festivals and information on more than 50 bird-finding guides from regions, states, and provinces where cranes are most likely to be seen are included. Lastly, there is a sampling of American, European, and Oriental crane folklore, legends, and myths. The text contains more than 50,000 words and nearly 350 literature references. There are more than 40 drawings and 3 maps by the author and 19 color photographs by Thomas D. Mangelsen.
BRITOMART Princess of South Wales
This book was inspired by "The Faerie Queene" by Edmund Spenser, published in 1590. The Faerie Queene was the first epic in English and one of the most significant poems in the language for later poets. Dedicating his creation to Elizabeth I, Spenser united medieval romance and renaissance epic to expound the glory of the Virgin Queen. The images in this book are a blend of photos I made of re-enactment events and castles around England and Wales. The text is related to the pictures (as the texts inspired the images), but there is no story. The book narrated the quests of nights, including Arthur (a young one), Merlin, Sir Guyon, Britomart (daughter of Ryence, King of South Wales and many more.

How the Other Half Lives
2022 Hardcover Reprint of the 1957 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Originally published in 1890, this is the classic indictment of slum life, written by one of the most famous reformers of the nineteenth century. "How the Other Half Lives: Studies Among the Tenements of New York" explained not only the living conditions in New York slums, but also in the sweatshops in some tenements which paid workers only a few cents a day. The book explains the plight of working children; they would work in factories and at other jobs. Some children became garment workers and newsies (newsboys). The effect was the tearing down of New York's worst tenements, sweatshops, and the reform of the city's schools. The book led to a decade of improvements in Lower East Side conditions, with sewers, garbage collection, and indoor plumbing all following soon after, thanks to public reaction. Our edition reprints the 1957 edition, without the photo illustrations done mostly by Riis himself.

Photos from Marz
The central topic is the wonderment of nature and the feeling of connection with the outdoors. My experiences with Nature are on-going learning and spiritual ones. My goal is to translate onto film, with my camera, the emotions and visual impact of what I see. My stock file (7000 + 35 mm slides) cover a broad scope of natural history (birds, insects, mammals, wildflowers, and reptiles) in portraits, in families, and in habitat. The stock travel images are from a number of states, including Alaska, as well as Africa, Canada, China, Europe, the Galapagos Islands, and South America. Picking the 50 images for this book from stock was the hard part. There is still the "maybe that image would have been better than this one" thoughts. The images are an eclectic representation of the four areas of photography in which the book is divided. These are; THE LOOK-INTO-THE-EYES APPROACH: Making eye contact "connection" with my subject is my favorite type of wildlife photography. Like with people, it's that sense of looking into the "Windows of the Soul". GOD'S WORLD: I don't know why certain scenes turns me on. Sometimes it is just a feeling I get. I don't always understand the why. Sometimes I think it is just God telling me to "take the picture", hence the title. There is a subdivision of this area titled PATHWAYS. MACRO WORLD: Macro photography, a way to take close-up telephoto views of little things. It helps to see the miniature details and beauty of the plant and insect worlds. PEOPLE: I have always been a people-watcher and when I run out of Nature subjects, particularly when traveling, I do photograph them. I try to capture elements of lifestyle, culture, and customs. If my translation to film of these visions of Mother Nature are reasonably successful, the photographs should trigger some personal thoughts, feelings, and memories in you, the viewer.

Life Forms
Barry Sheinkopf has been writing poetry, as well as novels and nonfiction, for decades. In the early 1970s, his poems began to contain fewer and fewer words. He was producing tanka and haiku, and not being pleased with the results, when finally it dawned on him that he really wanted to make poems with no words at all. This, for a writer, is something of a dilemma. He tried to resolve it by picking up the first of a series of cameras, in 35-millimeter and 4x5" formats, and attempting to photograph the metaphors he saw all around him. His goal from the first has been to capture these exceptional moments in the life around him. If you know that you're looking at a photograph, he says-something that you know is real-but can't momentarily identify it, your sense of the world will be enlarged a little when you suddenly realize what it is and exclaim, "Aha!" This book, then, records a quest for ways of apprehending the visual world that has never ended for him-of seeing into the life of forms, to help his viewers grasp that there are metaphors in everyday experience.Barry Sheinkopf's photographs have appeared in shows across the Northeast United States. Photography and Resistance
This book argues that photography, with its inherent connection to the embodied material world and its ease of transmissibility, operates as an implicitly political medium. It makes the case that the right to see is fundamental to the right to be. Limning the paradoxical links between photography as a medium and the conditions of political, social, and epistemological disappearance, the book interprets works by African American, Indigenous American, Latinx, and Asian American photographers as acts of political activism in the contemporary idiom. Placing photographic praxis at the crux of 21st-century crises of political equity and sociality, the book uncovers the discursive visual movements through which photography enacts reappearances, bringing to visibility erased and elided histories in the Americas. These faulted images have subverted both their concepts and analysis. A Picture Book for Paleontologists introduces a new method to accurately compare skulls from different species. The Unseen Saul Leiter
A thrilling trove of newly discovered color works from the photographer celebrated for his pioneering painterly visionNow firmly established as one of the world's greatest photographers, Saul Leiter (1923-2013) was relatively little known until the 2006 publication of Saul Leiter: Early Color, when he was already in his eighties. Choosing to shoot in color when black and white was the norm, Leiter portrayed midcentury New York's street life with a gorgeous painterliness that evoked the sensuality of his Abstract Expressionist contemporaries Rothko and Newman. His studio in the East Village, where he lived from 1952 until his death in 2013, is now the home of the Saul Leiter Foundation, which has commenced a full-scale survey of his more than 80,000 works.This volume contains works discovered through this project--specifically, color photography from slides never before published or seen by the public. He pioneered a painterly approach to color photography in the 1940s and produced covers for fashion magazines such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, before largely withdrawing from public attention in the 1980s. The publication of his first collection, Early Color, by Steidl in 2006, inspired an avid "rediscovery" that led to worldwide exhibitions and the release of a documentary, In No Great Hurry: 13 Lessons in Life with Saul Leiter (2014). He died in New York in 2013.

The Weaponized Camera in the Middle East
Drawing on unprecedented access to the video archives of B'Tselem, an Israeli NGO that distributes cameras to Palestinians living in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, Liat Berdugo lays out an argument for a visual studies approach to videographic evidence in Israel/Palestine. Using video stills as core material, it discusses the politics of videographic evidence in Israel/Palestine by demonstrating that the conflict is one that has produced an inequality of visual rights. The book highlights visual surveillance and counter surveillance at the citizen level, how Palestinians originally filmed to "shoot back" at Israelis, who were armed with shooting power via weapons as the occupying force. It also traces how Israeli private citizens began filming back at Palestinians with their own cameras, including personal cell phone cameras, thus creating a simultaneous, echoing counter surveillance. Complicating the notion that visual evidence alone can secure justice, the Weaponized Camera in The Middle East asks how what is seen, but also who is seeing, affects how conflicts are visually recorded. Drawing on over 5,000 hours of footage, only a fraction of which is easily accessible to the public domain, this book offers a unique perspective on the strategies and battlegrounds of the Israel/Palestine conflict.

Indo-Pak Photography Contest - Life Folk Arts Built Heritage Landscapes - Season 1
Photography is termed as the Universal Language of the People. It can bind people from various cultures and geographies. It is through photography one can witness perspectives never thought before. It is through the photographer's lens that unseen, unknown realities can be captured and shared. To explore and capture such talent across the borders, we at White Falcon Publishing collaborated with Daastan, Pakistan to organise Indo-Pak Photography contest in 2021.The contest was based on four themes -- Life- Folk Arts- Landscapes- Built HeritageThe response from photographers from both the nations was overwhelming. We received submissions from professional photographers who know the art inside out across all four themes, with the theme life attracting the most submissions. Viewing Photography in Post-Dictatorship Latin America
This book examines the archival aesthetic of mourning and memory developed by Latin American artists and photographers between 1997-2016. Particular attention is paid to how photographs of the assassinated or disappeared political dissident of the 1970s and 1980s, as found in family albums and in official archives, were not only re-imagined as conduits for private mourning, but also became allegories of social trauma and the struggle against socio-political amnesia. Memorials, art installations, photo-essays, street projections, and documentary films are all considered as media for the reframing of these archival images from the era of the Cold War dictatorships in Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, and Uruguay. While the turn of the millennium was supposedly marked by "the end of history" and, with the advent of digital technologies, by "the end of photography," these works served to interrupt and hence, belie the dominant narrative on both counts. Indeed, the book's overarching contention is that the viewer's affective identification with distant suffering when engaging these artworks is equally interrupted: instead, the viewer is invited to apprehend memorial images as emblems of national and international histories of ideological struggle.
Dust
A stunning photographic compilation of Egypt's abandoned palaces and grand buildings Between 1860 and 1940, Cairo and other large cities in Egypt witnessed a major construction boom that gave birth to extraordinary palaces and lavish buildings. These incorporated a mix of architectural styles, such as Beaux-Arts and Art Deco, with local design influences and materials. Today, many lie empty and neglected, rapidly succumbing to time, a real-estate frenzy, and an ongoing population crisis. In 2006 Russian-born photographer Xenia Nikolskaya began the process of documenting these structures. She gained exceptional access to them, taking photographs at some thirty locations, including Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Minya, Esna, and Port Said. These photographs were documented in the first edition of Dust: Egypt's Forgotten Architecture, which soon after its release in 2012 became a rare collector's item. This revised and expanded edition includes photographs from the first edition together with extra unseen images and new photographs taken by Nikolskaya between 2013 and 2021. It also includes previously unpublished essays by Heba Farid, co-owner of the Cairo-based photo gallery Tintera, and architect and urban planner Omar Nagati, co-founder of CLUSTER, an urban design and research platform also in Cairo. Dust: Egypt's Forgotten Architecture leads us seductively into some of the most breathtaking architectural spaces of Egypt's recent past, filled with a sense of both the immense weight and the impermanence of history.
