Carrie Mae Weems: A Great Turn in the Possible
The most comprehensive survey of Weems' genre-defying oeuvre yet publishedOne of the most influential American artists working today, Carrie Mae Weems has investigated narratives around family, race, gender, sexism, class and the consequences of power for more than 40 years. Her complex oeuvre--always ahead of its time, and profoundly formative for younger generations of artists--has employed photography (for which she is best known), fabric, text, audio, digital images, installation and video. Writing in the New York Times, Holland Cotter succinctly described Weems as "a superb image maker and a moral force, focused and irrepressible." This volume, spanning four decades of work, is the most thorough survey yet published. It includes Weems' earliest series, such as Family Pictures and Stories, for which she photographed her relatives and close friends; the legendary Kitchen Table Series, in which she posed in a domestic setting; and other critically acclaimed works and series such as Ain't Jokin', Colored People, From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried, Not Manet's Type, The Jefferson Suite, Monuments, Roaming, Museums, Constructing History (A Class Ponders the Future), Slow Fade to Black and the Obama Project, among many others. Contextualizing these pieces are essays by LaCharles Ward and Fred Moten and a chronology by Raul Mu簽oz. The book also includes a visual essay by Weems that presents a personal selection of her own works from the artist's perspective. The accompanying exhibition is organized by Fundaci籀n MAPFRE in collaboration with Fundaci籀n Foto Colectania, Barcelona and W羹rttembergischer Kunstverein, Stuttgart, where the exhibition Carrie Mae Weems. The Evidence Of Things Not Seen took place from April 2 through July 10, 2022. Carrie Mae Weems (born 1953) has received numerous awards, grants and fellowships, and is represented in public and private collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Weems lives in Brooklyn and Syracuse, New York.
The Stars’ Share / La Part Des ?toiles
Sir Paul Smith, with a wry grin in front of a bookshelf. Javier Bardem, utterly relaxed, in sneakers in a sunny field. Rasmus Kofoed, chef at Geranium in Copenhagen, one of the best restaurants in the world, atop an ivy-covered wall. What all these portraits have in common -- along with a sense of closeness and privacy -- is a glass. For this is how G矇rard-Philippe Mabillard photographs his friends and acquaintances, all celebrities from the world of film, art, fashion, design, and culture. Mabillard himself worked as a creative professional before taking the position of director of the Vin du Valais non-profit association. For him, the glass, filled with wine or water, is the link between the people he portrays: a symbol of friendship and community. Through his photography project, Mabillard is supporting the NGO Fondation Moi pour Toit in Colombia. Text in English and French.

Buster Keaton and Modern European Drama. An American Filmmaker Anticipating Aesthetic Multiplicity
As one of the most ingenious artists of the silent film era, Buster Keaton stands out for his legendary comedies. While drawing on vaudeville traditions, he also knew how to exploit techniques the new medium film offered to create - visually surprising - comic situations, many of which became an unforgettable part of film history. Transferring and adapting his theatrical skills to the screen, he invented a whole new repertoire of aesthetic devices. Numerous elements of his approach to the art of mise-en-sc癡ne would turn up again, albeit in modified and more radical forms, in dramatic theories and plays of playwrights such as Bertolt Brecht, Luigi Pirandello, Eug癡ne Ionesco, Samuel Beckett, and Antonin Artaud. This study looks at how Buster Keaton anticipated an aesthetic multiplicity that would come to shape dramatic concepts, the art of representation, and the language of performance in modern European theatre.
Remembering San Francisco in the 50s, 60s, and 70s
The 1950s, 60s, and 70s were defining moments in our nation's history, and San Francisco was at the forefront of the avant-garde artistic, intellectual, and cultural movements of the time. The city gave rise to the most significant countercultural revolutions of the century, including the Beatniks of the 1950s, the hippies in the 1960s, and the gay rights movement in the 1970s. With a selection of fine historic images from her bestselling book Historic Photos of San Francisco in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, Rebecca Schall captures in this companion volume, Remembering San Francisco in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, the revolutionary and tumultuous spirit of these historic times in stunning black-and-white photography.
The Magic of Japanese Zen Gardens
A meditativejourney of kyoto's zen gardens through all four seasons by photos and poems A Zen garden is the symbiotic fusion of Japanese philosophy and the art of garden design, a spiritual place of meditation and inner reflection that teaches mindfulness and brings joy to the eyes. If you want to get to know this garden culture, you won't find as many wonderful gems in such a small area anywhere in the world as in Kyoto. Thomas Kierok photographed these unique gardens in all four seasons. Through encounters with important Zen garden designers, he was able to develop his own photographic perspective inspired by the spirit of Zen. Poems by world-renowned Zen poets Dogen, Basho and Ryokan complement the visual masterpieces. The book is a a meditative journey, a sanctuary for the soul, a retreat between two covers whenever the need for calm, inspiration and grounding arises.
Reel Change
Ten years ago, a technological revolution swept through cinemas around the world, as analogue projectors were replaced with digital equipment. It was not just the plastic medium of film that was removed from projection boxes during this transformation; most cinemas took this opportunity to also evict the human projectionists who were hitherto in charge of screenings. Projectionists had been hidden from the sight of audiences for most of the history of photographic moving image projection, and their redundancies went largely unnoticed and unremarked upon. This book focuses attention on what has been happening behind film spectators' heads for the past 130 years, and attempts to write the history of cinema in Britain from the perspective of its habitually overlooked and undervalued projectionists, beginning in the silent era and continuing to the present day. Drawing upon extensive archival research and lengthy interviews with former projectionists, it documents the key facets and challenges of their work, and how these evolved in response to previous waves of significant technological change. It evaluates how projectionists helped to design and maintain key aesthetic characteristics of the 20th century big screen experience. It shows how the institution of cinema in Britain has been historically underpinned by the harsh exploitation of projectionists by many employers, detailing inadequate wage levels and poor working conditions that formerly provoked government investigation, and explaining why these problems were never successfully ameliorated by trade unions. It also charts in depth the recent fateful transition to digital projection, delineating how and why projectionists were so swiftly and ruthlessly consigned to the past, and assessing whether this form of entertainment should be considered diminished by their super session.

Everything Beautiful in Its Time
Deborah Jackson's debut album of photographs is designed to bring attention to the beauty of God's creation. The title is taken from Ecclesiastes 3:11: He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.Deborah says, "This photography book is the result of a very specific journey God has had me on during the last four years, which is why the photos here don't go any further into the past than 2018. That's because in October of that year, when I moved from California back home to Washington State, I lost some mobility due to osteoarthritis in both knees. "I wanted to showcase how someone who is limited to walking short distances could still find beauty in what is close by, primarily in my neighbors' gardens and in public parks that are easily reachable by car. All of these images were taken from some vantage point or other in the mid-sized city in Washington State where I now live or in places within easy driving distance."
Stoner to Seeker
STONER TO SEEKER: VOLUME I: THE PHOTOGRAHS is my impression of two of the most fascinating countries in Asia. Bangladesh is a brand-new country and I was there just a few months after they won their hard fought independence from Pakistan. I have photographed students, small businessmen, fishermen and villagers showing how they realize their hopes and dreams for this verdant paradise. Kathmandu, Nepal is the last stop on the overland Hippie Trail from Europe to Asia. What we found was a medieval country and it is the people, places and way of life of this mystical land that I recorded with my camera. I have documented a time, the 1970s, before the all-pervading Western culture, the Economic Miracle and the geo-political revolutions changed Asia irrevocably. This is my photographic vision of Asia, a bright shining candle before the winds of change extinguished it forever.
Reckonings and Reconstructions
"Can photography help extend our understanding of the South and see the region in a broader American context?" writes essayist and southern literature scholar W. Ralph Eubanks in Reckonings and Reconstructions. "Yes, but what we see in an image often depends on what we already know." Reckonings and Reconstructions is a visual and textual investigation of southern photography since World War II. The book and its partner exhibition present 125 color photographs from the Do Good Fund by a wide-ranging group of 77 photographers, diverse in gender, race, ethnicity, and region. W. Ralph Eubanks addresses southern memory and the ethics of photography. Grace Elizabeth Hale considers the role of Athens, Georgia--with its vibrant community of photographers, renowned photography program at the University of Georgia, and celebrated alternative art and music scene--within the history of southern photography. The essays that follow by Jasmine Amussen, Rosalind Bentley, Lauren Henkin, Jeffrey Richmond-Moll, RaMell Ross, and Jeff Whetstone examine expansive and internally paradoxical themes: land, labor, law and protest, migration, food, ritual, and kin. Together, these themes link disparate works in the Do Good collection and capture southern history, culture, and identity in all its complexity and contradictions. With the photographs as their backbone, these essays help construct and deconstruct each thematic category, resisting notions of the South as a retrograde region and instead presenting the ever-changing qualities of the place and its people. A region where despair and hope, terror and beauty, pain and joy, and trauma and dignity coexist and comingle. A place seeking reconciliation and restoration, captured by photographers with a vision of a "Better South."

The Lives, Lore, and Literature of Cranes
This book provides basic information on cranes that should be of interest and importance to crane-loving birders ("craniacs") as well as to ornithologists and wildlife managers. Primary consideration is given to the sandhill and whooping cranes, but all 13 of the Old World cranes are also discussed. Special consideration is given to the relative abundance and conservation status of all of the world's species, of which nearly half are declining and a few are in real danger of long-term survival. More than 80 refuges and preserves in the United States and Canada, where the best chances of seeing cranes in the wild exist, are described, as are several zoos and bird parks with notable crane collections. Descriptions of 16 North American annual crane festivals and information on more than 50 bird-finding guides from regions, states, and provinces where cranes are most likely to be seen are included. Lastly, there is a sampling of American, European, and Oriental crane folklore, legends, and myths. The text contains more than 50,000 words and nearly 350 literature references. There are more than 40 drawings and 3 maps by the author and 19 color photographs by Thomas D. Mangelsen.
BRITOMART Princess of South Wales
This book was inspired by "The Faerie Queene" by Edmund Spenser, published in 1590. The Faerie Queene was the first epic in English and one of the most significant poems in the language for later poets. Dedicating his creation to Elizabeth I, Spenser united medieval romance and renaissance epic to expound the glory of the Virgin Queen. The images in this book are a blend of photos I made of re-enactment events and castles around England and Wales. The text is related to the pictures (as the texts inspired the images), but there is no story. The book narrated the quests of nights, including Arthur (a young one), Merlin, Sir Guyon, Britomart (daughter of Ryence, King of South Wales and many more.
Mumentous
The closest you'll ever get to seeing someone actually wear their hearts on their sleeves is in Texas, every fall, at the local high school homecoming game. They're called homecoming mums. They are as bodacious as football, as irresistible as a juicy rumor, and as deep as a momma's love. Over a hundred years ago when the custom began, mum was short for chrysanthemum, a typical corsage that boys gave to girls before taking them to the big football game. But through the decades, mum went from a simple abbreviation to a complicated shorthand for an eye-popping tradition that's as ingrained in the culture as it is confounding to outsiders.Through her original photography and collection of stories from across and beyond the Lone Star State, Amy J. Schultz takes us deep in the heart of mum country. You'll meet kids who wear them, parents who buy them, and critics who decry them as just another example of consumerism gone wild. But mostly, you'll discover that just like every ritual which stands the test of time, someone is keeping the tradition alive. Someone like Mom.

Vintage Yosemite
From 1902-1907, Harold A. Taylor photographed Yosemite, operating out of his Studio of the Three Arrows in Yosemite Valley, and using dry glass plate negatives. Glass plate negatives, though fragile and heavy, permit stunning clarity and depth of light-and celluloid would all but replace them by the late 1920s.Vintage Yosemite displays Taylor's sensibility to Yosemite's grand views. We watch light move through giant sequoias, across rock faces, and along rivers, streams, lakes, and waterfalls. Together with visitors, wagons, and cabins of the era, we experience Yosemite as it was over one hundred years ago.Vintage Yosemite reveals subtleties of transformation and rhythms of magnificence.

Carrie Mae Weems: Kitchen Table Series
"In book form, Kitchen Table is more intimate.... Unlike the experience of meandering through a museum, stepping back to appreciate the images and nearing the text panels to skim them, the pace of exploration is now in a person's hands." -Hilary Moss, New York TimesThis publication is dedicated solely to the early and canonical body of work by American artist Carrie Mae Weems (born 1953). The 20 photographs and 14 text panels that make up Kitchen Table Series tell a story of one woman's life, as conducted in the intimate setting of her kitchen. The kitchen, one of the primary spaces of domesticity and the traditional domain of women, frames her story, revealing to us her relationships--with lovers, children, friends--and her own sense of self, in her varying projections of strength, vulnerability, aloofness, tenderness and solitude. As Weems describes it, this work of art depicts "the battle around the family ... monogamy ... and between the sexes. Weems herself is the protagonist of the series, though the woman she depicts is an archetype. Kitchen Table Series seeks to reposition and reimagine the possibility of women and the possibility of people of color, and has to do with, in the artist's words, "unrequited love."
Chillin' with God
The title says it all. When GOD thinks you're cool he never fails to let you know. Chiilin' with me at the cemeteries HE likes to play games - having fun taking photographs of me taking photographs...Now, who is cool?
Toilet Paper: Issue 19
The latest creative collaboration of Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo FerrariSince its first issue in June 2010, Toilet Paper has created a world that displays ambiguous narratives and a troubling imagination. It combines the vernacular of commercial photography with twisted narrative tableaux and surrealistic imagery. The result is a publication that is itself a work of art which, through its accessible form as a magazine and through its wide distribution, challenges the limits of the contemporary art economy.
Jessica Todd Harper: Here
"Harper's approach is quietly assured, and she has a sharp eye for the cozy details of domesticity." -The New YorkerLike 17th-century Dutch painters who made otherwise ordinary interior scenes appear charged with meaning, Pennsylvania-based photographer Jessica Todd Harper (born 1975) looks for the value in everyday moments. The characters in her imagery are the people around her--friends, herself, family--but it is not so much they who are important as the way in which they are organized and lit by Harper. A woman helping her child practice the piano is not a particularly sacred moment, but as in a Vermeer painting, the way the composition and lighting influence the content suggests that perhaps it is.This collection of photographs presented in Harper's third monograph makes use of what is right in front of the artist, what is here, a place that many of us came to contemplate especially during the pandemic. Beauty, goodness and truth can reveal themselves in daily life, as in the Dutch paintings of everyday domestic scenes that are somehow lit up with mysterious import. Harper shows how our unexamined or even seemingly dull surroundings can sometimes be illuminating.
Comrade Sisters
Foreword by Angela Davis: "This stunning collection of historical photographs, complimented by contemporary conversations with women members of the Black Panther Party, reminds us that women were literally the heart of this new political approach to Black freedom."Many of us have heard these three words: Black Panther Party. Some know the Party's history as a movement for the social, political, economic and spiritual upliftment of Black and indigenous people of color - but to this day, few know the story of the backbone of the Party: the women. It's estimated that six out of ten Panther Party members were women. While these remarkable women of all ages and diverse backgrounds were regularly making headlines agitating, protesting, and organizing, off-stage these same women were building communities and enacting social justice, providing food, housing, education, healthcare, and more. Comrade Sisters is their story. The book combines photos by Stephen Shames, who at the time was a 20-year-old college student at Berkeley. With the complete trust of the Black Panther Party, Shames took intimate, behind-the-scenes photographs that fully portrayed Party members' lives. This marks his third photo book about the Black Panthers and includes many never before published images.Ericka Huggins, an early Party member and leader along with Bobby Seale and Huey Newton, has written a moving text, sharing what drew so many women to the Party and focusing on their monumental work on behalf of the most vulnerable citizens. Most importantly, the book includes contributions from over fifty former women members - some well-known, others not - who vividly recall their personal experiences from that time. Other texts include a foreword by Angela Davis and an afterword by Alicia Garza. All Power to the People. We are very excited to share with you a preview of what's to come!
No Justice, No Peace
Nautilus Book Awards' Better Books for a Better World A Movement in Words and Images Award-winning photographer Devin Allen has devoted the last six years to documenting the protests of the Black Lives Matter movement, from its early days in Baltimore, Maryland, up to the present day. The riveting images in No Justice, No Peace provide a lens on the resistance that has empowered Black lives generation after generation. Allen's signature black-and-white photos bear witness to the profound history of African Americans and allies in the fight for social justice and portray the collective action over decades in stunning, timeless portraits. Allen's remarkable photos of today's Black Lives Matter protests, which have been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and twice on the cover of Time magazine, were inspired by Gordon Parks of the Civil Rights Movement, and create a vision of the past and future of Black activism and leadership in America. With contributions from twenty-six bestselling and influential writers and activists of today such as Clint Smith, DeRay Mckesson, D. Watkins, Jacqueline Woodson, Emmanuel Acho, Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, and more, alongside the words of past writers and activists such as Martin Luther King Jr, Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X, Maya Angelou, and John Lewis, No Justice, No Peace is a reminder of the moral responsibility of Americans to break unjust laws and take direct action. In words and pictures, No Justice, No Peace honors the connection between activism today and that of the past. If indeed hindsight is 20/20, this artistic look back is a lens on history that enlarges our understanding of the lasting predicament of racism in the United States of America. At once deeply intimate and profoundly uplifting, No Justice, No Peace is a visual tribute to Black resistance and a stern missive on the tough, but necessary, road that lies ahead.
How the Other Half Lives
2022 Hardcover Reprint of the 1957 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Originally published in 1890, this is the classic indictment of slum life, written by one of the most famous reformers of the nineteenth century. "How the Other Half Lives: Studies Among the Tenements of New York" explained not only the living conditions in New York slums, but also in the sweatshops in some tenements which paid workers only a few cents a day. The book explains the plight of working children; they would work in factories and at other jobs. Some children became garment workers and newsies (newsboys). The effect was the tearing down of New York's worst tenements, sweatshops, and the reform of the city's schools. The book led to a decade of improvements in Lower East Side conditions, with sewers, garbage collection, and indoor plumbing all following soon after, thanks to public reaction. Our edition reprints the 1957 edition, without the photo illustrations done mostly by Riis himself.
