Viewing Distance
Viewing Distance compiles and transforms declassified material from US government archives to examine photography as a tool of the military-industrial complex for reconnaissance, surveillance, and documentation of advanced technologies. While many of the source images for this body of work date back to the middle 20th century, they have only recently been released and much information remains secret. These pictures represent the decades-long time delay from when knowledge comes into being and when it becomes publicly accessible. The Cold War period that much of the material originates from is a significant turning point in photography's technological development and use for intelligence gathering. The book combines photographs pertaining to the clandestine innovations and operations of that era with contemporary documents and devices, connecting past and present. Processes including analog printing, digital collage, scanner manipulation, and data bending are used to animate the archival material. Through this disruption and layering, historical fragments are presented in a state of flux, open to alternate associations and implications. What we are allowed to know and see is often incomplete and indeterminate, encouraging speculation and critical vision.--Evan Hume "Evan Hume"

The Lives of Images, Vol. 2: Analogy, Attunement, and Attention
The Lives of Images, edited by Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa, is a set of contemporary thematic readers designed for educators, students, practicing photographers, and others interested in the ways images function within a wider set of cultural practices. The series tracks the many movements and "lives" of images--their tendency to accumulate, circulate, and transform through different geographies, cultures, processes, institutions, states, uses, and times. Volume 2 in this series, Analogy, Attunement, and Attention, addresses the complex relationships that the reproducible image creates with its viewers, their bodies, their minds, and their sense of the physical and metaphysical world. The selection addresses the image's role in the social constitution of individual and collective identity, in social practices of resistance to the structural violences of racism, or in relation to state exercises of power. Of particular importance in this volume are questions of our changing relationship to space and to selfhood as mediated by the image and by the many networked technologies and norms built around it. Essays in the volume ask: what modes of attention are required of us as viewers and agents of image circulation? The question of how image technologies provide us with an array of freedoms is here combined with and read against the many ways images are deployed to reorient, repress, or reduce our field of vision--thus affecting our capacity to see and to act in social space. Contributions by Victor Burgin, Judith Butler, Tina Campt, Sarah Jane Cervenak, Harun Farocki, Tom Holert, Thomas Keenan, Rabih Mrou矇, Vivian Sobchack, and Tiziana Terranova

The American Experiment
The idea of America, and the American identity, has been central to this country's cultural conversation and debate since its inception. America -- past, present, and future -- is an ongoing experiment in free will and liberty for all who reach its welcoming shores, plow its fertile soil, and raise their children to achieve that great promise of the American Dream. In The American Experiment, photographer Brandon Ralph presents an exploration of the patriotic symbols, the vast and varied landscape, and the tapestry of humanity that poses the question anew: What makes an American? The result is a finely wrought collection of moments and Americans captured in time, separated by decades and by state lines, by events of national significance and by the invisible routines of day-to-day life. In Ralph's starkly beautiful and unwaveringly sensitive images, there is a sense of timelessness that speaks to our collective nostalgia, our unflagging optimism, and our unending pursuit of freedom for all people.
Luca Campigotto: American Elegy
The American road mythos from the vast landscapes of the West to the industrial fringes of New York CityThis luscious volume presents 70 color photographs of America imbued with both clarity and nostalgia. Italian photographer Luca Campigotto (born 1962) takes us from the canyons, deserts and coal-mining ghost towns of the American West to Idaho's large auto cemeteries, to the Bronx and other industrial fringes of New York City, to a town in Montana whose brick architecture is reminiscent of Edward Hopper's paintings. The solitude of the wild frontier and the distance of the urban periphery alternate between dazzling daytime lights and mysterious nocturnes. Each photo is accompanied by short poetic notes--a journey of personal memories which echo literary and cinematographic works--serving as an evocation of some American topoi, above all, the timeless myth of "on the road" traveling. The afterword by Mauro Pala, a professor of comparative literature, explores the ancient relationship that binds American literature to great landscape photography.

This Book Is Literally Just Pictures of Animals Silently Judging You
This book is here to give us all the side eye, showcasing our friends from the animal kingdom at their very sassiest. If the utter chaos of recent world events has taught us anything, it's that people are bad at making decisions. So, in uncertain times, we need someone to tell us like it is - and that someone is animals. As its title suggests, this book is literally just pictures of animals silently judging you and your life choices. Some of these include: a monkey who knows what you did last night, giraffes who can't believe you're wearing that, cats who just can't, and a corgi who isn't angry - just disappointed. Toward these sage angels we must turn, in these weird times for humankind, to help us make better decisions - for ourselves and our furry friends who are, honestly, kind of embarrassed.
Side Walk
In April 2020, when New York was in lockdown and the epicentre of the pandemic, Renate Aller created the project side walk. She hosted friends and neighbors on her sidewalk or visited them in their street, her camera in self timer mode, recording these masked encounters at a safe 6 feet distance. With voices muted by masks we learn to communicate with our eyes and body language, finding our bearings in a new emotional landscape. These sidewalk visits created a deep sense of community where community had been forced apart. This project is in the spirit of Rainer Maria Rilke: 罈[...] that each should stand guard over the solitude of the other竄. German born artist Renate Aller lives in New York and her art work is held in numerous museums.

Come Get Your Honey
What if photography is more 罈listening竄 than seeing? Come Get Your Honey uses this question as a compass while telling a story about the trans* and queer refugees in Berlin. It is the photographer's journey of weaving bonds at eye-level with individuals through vulnerability, friendship, and joy. Samet Durgun strives to depict each individual as complex human beings in their wholeness, trying to establish a new home in a foreign country and an extremely polarized political climate. He goes beyond the common narratives about LGBTQIA+ and refugee communities, which tend to reduce them to their agony, either by surgically exploring their body from the 罈outsider gaze竄 or romanticizing their struggle. Samet Durgun (b. 1988) based in Berlin, is German with a Turkish migration background and of Abkhazian descent. He holds a BA from Bogazici University, Turkey.
Peaceable Kingdom
Sage Sohier photographed at refuges for exotic animals, wildlife rescues that rehabilitate and re-release animals to the wild, dog and cat rescues, and farm animal sanctuaries. She focused on showing the bond between people and animals: 罈Many of the people pictured here have dedicated most of their adult lives to saving animals. As for the animals, their sweetness, resilience, zest for life, and willingness to forgive people - to coexist with them and often to flourish - is remarkable, and may be their only salvation.竄 (S. Sohier) Sohier has had six books of her photographs published, and her work is in many important collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Sy Montgomery is the author of internationally acclaimed books, among them The Soul of an Octopus.

Cosmologies
This fall, Aperture magazine presents an issue exploring the idea of cosmologies--the origins, histories, and local universes that artists create for themselves. In an exclusive interview, Greg Tate speaks to Deana Lawson about how her monumental staged portraits trace cosmologies of the African diaspora. "What I'm doing integrates mythology, religion, empirical data, dreams," says Lawson, whose work is the subject of major solo exhibitions this year at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. In an in-depth profile of Judith Joy Ross and her iconic portraiture, Rebecca Bengal shows how a constellation of strangers is brought together through Ross's precise, empathic gaze. "Ross is guided by a rapt, intense, wholehearted belief in the individual," Bengal writes. A portfolio of Michael Schmidt's acutely observed work from the 1970s and '80s reveals the realms within realms of a once divided Berlin, while Feng Li's surprising black-and-white snapshots zigzag between absurdist dramas in various Chinese cities. Ashley James distills the surreal visions of Awol Erizku's still lifes and tableaux; Casey Gerald contributes a sweeping ode to Baldwin Lee's stirring 1980s portraits of Black Southern subjects; and Pico Iyer meditates on Tom Sandberg's grayscales marked by both absence and reverence. Throughout "Cosmologies," artists cast their attention on the great mysteries of both personal and shared lineages, tracking their locations in space, time, and history, and reminding us of the elegant enigmas that can be unraveled close to home.
The Suffrage Photography of Lena Connell
Lena Connell was one of a new breed of young professional women who took up photography at the turn of the 20th century. She ran her own studio in North London, only employed women, and made her mark on history by creating compellingly modern portraits of women in the British suffrage movement. The women that Connell captured on film are as class-inclusive a group as you could find: whether they were factory workers, schoolteachers, or aristocrats, they joined the cause to make a difference for future generations of women, if not for themselves. Connell's portraits created a new kind of visibility for these activists as hard-working, unrelenting women, whose spirits rose above injustice. This book examines Connell's artistic career within the Edwardian suffrage movement. It discusses her body of portraits within the British suffrage movement's propagandistic efforts and its goals of sophisticated, professional representations of its members. It includes all of her known portraits of suffragettes through 1914.

The Road to Lame Deer
A bittersweet cross-cultural friendship and the richness and melancholy of modern Cheyenne life are unforgettably recorded in the words and photographs of The Road to Lame Deer. In the 1970s photographer and writer Jerry Mader was drawn into the community of Lame Deer on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana. The winding road to Lame Deer allowed Mader to gradually perceive something of both the pain and the continuing vitality of the Cheyennes' distinctive world. Mader's narrative is centered on what he believed to be his last visit to the reservation and on the memories it awakened. In particular he explores his initial feelings about and first perceptions of the community and how Lame Deer, as well as Mader and the relationships he forged there, changed over time. As he learned about the people and began to take photographs of Cheyenne elders, images of the reservation and its people became seared in his memory and are movingly recalled throughout this work--the hot, dry dust of an afternoon whirlwind, a quest for a stone woman, the haunting melody of a Cheyenne flute, and the desolation and desperation of the bars scattered along the edges of the reservation. At the heart of the book is Mader's relationship and friendship with Cheyenne elder Henry Tall Bull, which was punctuated by both insight and misunderstanding and ultimately ended in tragedy. Witty, knowledgeable, and bearing a bitterness that could flare into white-hot anger under the influence of alcohol, Tall Bull guided Mader through the maze of relationships and obligations that girded and defined the Lame Deer community. The memory of the doomed friendship between photographer and Cheyenne elder haunts Mader still as he continues to travel the long road to Lame Deer in his dreams.
