Looking for the Masters in Ricardo’s Golden Shoes
One summer a few years ago, photographer Catherine Balet and her friend, the stylist Ricardo Martinez Paz, were at the Arles Photography Festival in the South of France. Balet, who had often been amused by Ricardo's resemblance to Picasso decided to recreate Robert Doisneau's famous image of the painter with loaves for fingers and the publication of this and other early images on their Facebook pages aroused such enthusiasm that it prompted them to develop the work. The series now extends to over 120 images spanning the whole history of photography.

Tulip
"I looked at the things that made her uniquely her. Her love of flowers was a beautiful part of her personality; the house was always full of them, and as I photographed them I realised they were symbolic of what was happening - they represented happiness, love, kindness and generosity, but also isolation, decay, and finally death."
Haiti Aftermath
The earthquake had been a catastrophic 7.0 on the Richter scale and over the next two weeks more than fifty large aftershocks were recorded. Some three million people were affected and the death toll exceeded 200,000 people. For an already poverty-ravaged country this was a disaster of massive proportions. Venturi noted 'Haiti lives on in utter precariousness, abandoned and waiting..'

The Difficulties of Nonsense
In the 1970s, from his base in Los Angeles, artist Robert Cumming (born 1943) made functional-looking but ultimately useless constructions, created primarily to be photographed with his 8 x 10 camera. Playing with props, proportions, unusual angles, light and mirrors, Cumming invited viewers to look in--and then to look again, second-guessing what they saw. The Difficulties of Nonsense is the first comprehensive publication to survey Cumming's significant series of conceptual black-and-white and color photographs from the 1970s, now a touchstone for contemporary artists, and focus on the artist's fascination with illusion and trickery. With an essay by Sarah Bay Gachot and an interview by David Campany, this monograph pays homage to a time when Cumming, and many in the photographic community, worked to playfully push the boundaries of photography and narrative.
Micronesia
What is the "good life"? Is it given or must we earn it? Must we give something up to get it? On her trip to Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Chuuk, Guam, Tinian, Rota, Palau, and Yap, traveler pondered the meaning of "the good life". What better place on earth to consider this question than on these islands so bountifully blessed by nature and inhabited by some of the last sustainable cultures on the earth. After traveling throughout these idyllic islands, one question remained deep in the heart of the traveler. By whose standards do we judge the good life, and must we give up our identity, our cultural center, and our essence to have it, even if the definition is not our own? The Spiritual Traveler Series: Instead of simply looking at the sights, sounds, and tastes of a locale, the reader is allowed to experience the consciousness of a nation.

Road Wallah
Premier Padmini taxis, first introduced to the streets of Mumbai in the 1960s, have now all but disappeared following the introduction of laws to reduce pollution in the city. Locally known as 'Kaali-Peeli', there were once more than 60,000 of these iconic black and yellow cabs struggling through the chaos of Mumbai's streets. Over a four year period Dougie Wallace documented these elaborate Bollywood disco bars on wheels. The crowded streets of Mumbai and the assortment of passengers provide a dynamic and intense backdrop, as do the cabs themselves.
Kids in Love
Olivia Bee is celebrated for her dreamy, evocative portraits and landscapes rich with implied narratives of intimacy, freedom and adventure. Olivia Bee: Kids in Love showcases two bodies of photographic work, including the series "Enveloped in a Dream" that first brought Bee recognition as a teenager. This first series offers a visual diary of girlhood friendship and the exploration of self, showcasing Bee's unique ability to convey the bittersweet nostalgia of adolescence on the brink of adulthood and new possibilities. The second set of images, "Kids in Love," is drawn from recent work and continues Bee's photographic chronicle of her circle of friends and new loves, capturing both the pleasures and terrors of the fleeting passage of romanticized youth. While the work continues to evolve, what remains constant is her seductive use of color and photographic artifact, as well as the immediacy and charge of each image. Bee gives voice to the self-awareness and visual fluency of the millennial generation. Experiences are sharply felt, and easily communicated and shared, generating visual records that render these memories as significant as the moments themselves. Tavi Gevinson, founding editor of the online magazine Rookie and Bee's frequent collaborator and model, writes about the work and about the role of images as social currency in today's image-driven world.

David Bailey
Determining the perfect exposure time for a photographic print in a traditional darkroom can be a time-consuming and tedious process, and the irreverent David Bailey (born 1938) has never had much patience for it. Normally a photographer makes a number of test strips, each showing different exposure times; but Bailey has always just intuitively torn off strips of the unexposed paper to find the desired result: "I would usually have it in the bag after three tears." Over the decades, Bailey has kept his "test tears," re-fixing and washing them to preserve the unpredictable and unique qualities of these "accidents." This book contains the best of Bailey's tears, which transform some of his most famous motifs into fascinating abstract pictures through their torn edges and myriad tones.

Windmill Tales
On the prairies of North America, wind and water were pervasive, but whereas wind was tangible, water in quantity was hidden beneath the surface. The vast grasslands fed great herds of animals, which in turn sustained Native Americans, but it was not until water could be brought to the surface that the plains could be cultivated and developed into a great agricultural bread-basket for the growing nation. The self-governing windmill forever changed the culture of this vast region. In Windmill Tales, in nearly one hundred beautiful full-color images, photographer Wyman Meinzer shows American windmills as they appear today. Many of them are still working, and others have fallen or are preserved at the American Wind Power Center in Lubbock, Texas, but all illustrate the way of life that was made possible by the windmill. Brief reminiscences and stories told by visitors to the American Wind Power Center give the reader a sense of the central importance of windmills in the lives of early pioneers in the West. Some of the stories reflect the sense of humor ranch and farm families developed to help them through hard times, whereas others hint at disappointment and tragedy. Together with the photographs they give us a fascinating insight into our history.

National Parks of Costa Rica
The unique geography and climate of Costa Rica provide the small country with extraordinary biodiversity--North American and South American species of flora and fauna can be found side by side there, taking advantage of the serendipitous conditions. The government of Costa Rica has shown a strong commitment to preserving their natural bounty. It has expressed this wildlife conservation ethic by establishing a robust network of national parks designed to protect pieces of every type of ecosystem and preserve watersheds. The country's twenty-six national parks and other protected areas comprise some 25 percent of its total landmass. The national park system, practically from the beginning, has been characterized by its ambition and innovative approach. As a result, today Costa Rica is home to the largest remaining (and expanding) patch of tropical dry forest in the world, the largest intact mangrove forest in Central America, legendary cloud forests, and numerous sea turtle nesting sites of global importance--to name just a few of its environmental accomplishments. This book features stunning photographs by Gregory Basco, a professional Costa Rica nature photographer. It provides an unparalleled glimpse into the treasures of Costa Rica's parks. With stunning images and informative text, National Parks of Costa Rica imparts an appreciation for the richness of nature and the importance of environmental conservation.
The Shopkeepers
Good stores still exist. In fact, their number is growing. Well-designed specialty shops that are inspired by the small manufacturers and mom-and-pop operations of the past are now sprouting up. These outlets are defying e-commerce and anonymous online shopping with outstanding products, original interior design, innovative concepts, and, first and foremost, friendly and competent customer service. The Shopkeepers explores this new store culture through examples such as barber shops, fish smokeries, tailors, and milliners, as well as retail spaces specializing in stationery, hardware, buttons, home d矇cor, or coffeemakers. They can be found off the beaten track as well as in the hearts of major cities from Berlin to Beirut. The book makes it clear that they are all driven by the passion that their founders and operators have for their business ideas and products, whether vintage eyeglasses, textiles from India or China, specialty books, soaps, olive oils, or tropical fish. While some shops are based on innovative ideas, others are reinterpretations of traditional family businesses. The Shopkeepers also introduces some of the personalities behind these exciting retail concepts. Many have been running their shops for years but are only now being recognized by a new generation of consumers for their acumen, integrity, and knowledge --from shoemakers who truly understand their craft to culinary experts who can differentiate between 200 types of chocolate or cheese with their eyes closed. Some are such interesting characters that the chance to interact with them is reason enough to attract potential customers. In the stores featured in The Shopkeepers, the customer is again king and can find a personal, quality retail experience that the internet simply cannot provide. The book reminds us all of the value of exceptional service and of meticulously selected products which are built to last and on which one can depend. If they didn't exist already, they do now.
Question Bridge
Published to coincide with a five-channel video installation touring across the United States, including some notable venues such as The Brooklyn Museum, New York; the Exploratorium, San Francisco, California; the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio; Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin; and the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Connecticut, Question Bridge: Black Males in America assembles a series of questions posed to black men, by and for other black men, along with the corresponding responses and portraits of the participants. The questions range from the comic to the sublimely philosophical: from Am I the only one who has problems eating chicken, watermelon and bananas in front of white people? to Why is it so difficult for black American men in this culture to be themselves, their essential selves, and remain who they truly are? The answers tackle the issues that continue to surround black male identity today in a uniquely honest, no-holds-barred manner. While the ostensible subject is black men, the conversation that evolves in these pages is ultimately about the nature of living in a post-Obama, post-Ferguson, post-Voting Rights Act America. Question Bridge: Black Males in America is about who we are and what we mean to one another. Most critically, it asks: how can we start to dismantle the myths and misconceptions that have evolved around race and gender in America--how can we reset the narrative about ourselves? The project's founding artists, along with contributions from Andrew Young, Jesse Williams, Rashid Shabazz and Delroy Lindo, contextualize the body of the work and provide closing remarks on our current and future social climate.

Bottom of the Lake
Bottom of the Lake is a 256-page facsimile of artist Christian Patterson's family telephone book for his hometown, Fond du Lac ("Bottom of the Lake"), Wisconsin, printed in 1973, soon after Patterson's birth. This artist's book includes found markings and reproductions of materials inserted in the phone book in addition to Patterson's drawings, photographs and marginalia. This book-within-a-book carefully combines the fact-based phone book with the artist's highly subjective re-imagination of his hometown, playfully juxtaposing different documentary forms and ways of seeing to create a deeply personal, darkly humorous "other" book. The experience of reading Bottom of the Lake extends beyond its pages with an interactive feature: a telephone number attached to the book connects users with over 100 audio experiences, mixing field recordings, found archival material and performances that recreate the artist's hometown. Christian Patterson (born 1972) was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin and is now based in New York City. A self-taught photographer, he embellishes his work with drawings, paintings or objects. In 2005 he worked with William Eggleston on a project titled Sound Affects; his second monograph, Redheaded Peckerwood, won the 2012 Rencontres d'Arles Author Book Award and is now in its third printing. Patterson was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2013 and the Vevey International Photography Award in 2015. He is represented by Rose Gallery in Santa Monica, California and Robert Morat in Hamburg and Berlin, Germany.
Philippe Cheng
Still collects photographer Philippe Cheng's images of Long Island, New York, where he lives and works. Seeking to evoke a mood rather than capture the minute visual details of the landscape, Cheng shifts the focus plane within his camera to create scenes that are deliberately blurred. Poetic, personal interpretations of a landscape that has inspired many artists, Cheng's photographs are dominated by intense color and a gentle abstraction. The horizon, the sea, the sand and the beach grass of Long Island all make their appearances, but in abstracted, hazy, dreamlike forms, inviting the viewer to share Cheng's personal connection with the landscape. Still includes contributions by Terrie Sultan, Director of the Parrish Art Museum; curator Elisabeth Biondi; landscape designer Edwina von Gal; and textile designer Jack Larsen.
Rob Hornstra & Arnold Van Bruggen
Photographer Rob Hornstra and writer Arnold van Bruggen began working together in 2007 to tell the story of Sochi, Russia, site of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Practicing "slow journalism," they returned repeatedly to the region, establishing a solid engagement with this small yet incredibly complicated place before it found itself in the glare of international media attention. Hornstra's approach combines documentary storytelling with contemporary portraiture, found photography and other elements collected over the course of their travels. "The Sochi Project" was first released via installments in book form and online, each focusing on a particular facet of the story. It was then published in 2014 as a hardcover volume bringing together the highlights and key elements of this effort. "The Sochi Project" is now available in a smaller, more affordably priced edition.
The Photojournalism of Del Hall
Del Hall stands as one of the few journalists able to chart their careers through the milestones and icons of the late twentieth century -- the civil rights movement, Vatican II, the Beatles' arrival in the United States, Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy, the1968 Chicago Riots, the Vietnam War, the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall. Hall's humble beginnings on the gritty downtown streets of Depression-era New Orleans proved an ample launching pad for a six-decade profession documenting key moments in world affairs, all while staying ahead of the many technological shifts that revolutionized news media. With the aid of previously unpublished photographs and stills, critically acclaimed geographer and author Richard Campanella turns the focus around to the Emmy Award--winning photojournalist and presents the life of a quiet observer who captured critical episodes in American history. From Hall's start in New Orleans at WWL-TV covering lunch-counter sit-ins and the integration of schools in the Ninth Ward to his lauded work for CBS News, filming Walter Cronkite, 60 Minutes, and Charles Kuralt, Campanella commemorates Hall's remarkable contributions to journalism as the field expanded from print to television. This visually captivating and lively biography follows Hall as he is chased by the Ku Klux Klan, shot at by the Viet Cong, journeys to Moscow to cover President Nixon's historic visit, and almost dies in a helicopter crash at the America's Cup race. Campanella traces the life of a tireless documentarian and pioneer who not only photographed history as it happened, but also filmed one of the first full-color TV documentaries and redefined nonlinear computerized editing. The Photojournalism of Del Hall: New Orleans and Beyond, 1950s--2000s serves as a testament to the immense impact of the oft-overlooked and uncredited role of the cameraman, rightfully placing Del Hall in the vanguard of the profession.

Aperture
Must-read conversations with nine of the world's most influential photographers. The Interview Issue features in-depth conversations with a selection of influential photographers of an older generation, who continue to produce and publish, about their lifelong engagement with photography. What compels someone to become a photographer? And what drives someone to continue to be one, for as many as seven decades? How does a veteran photographer describe years of questioning politics, personal experience, social unrest, landscape, and history through the camera? For this issue, Aperture offers nine in-depth interviews, firsthand accounts that underscore the generosity and intelligence of their speakers. Born between 1928 and 1947, the nine photographers featured―Bruce Davidson, Paolo Gasparini, David Goldblatt, Guido Guidi, Ishiuchi Miyako, William Klein, Bertien van Manen, Boris Mikhailov, and Rosalind Fox Solomon―are still active today, adding to their already unparalleled bodies of work. In these pages, the medium is considered from various points of view, offering a range of philosophies, values, and perspectives, yet for all the differences within this group, they share a fundamental curiosity about the human experience.
The Cars
The Cars compiles a new body of work by renowned photographer Wolfgang Tillmans (born 1968). Since the early 90s, Tillmans has redefined the genre of photography, epitomizing a new kind of subjectivity and questioning existing values and hierarchies. The Cars is no exception; images of cars in a typical street view--not in a crash, or an extreme traffic jam, but simply present--pay tribute to the amount of time we spend around, or looking at, or using the vehicle. "Cars are everywhere," the photographer says. "Their sheer number is the most crazy thing about them. They appear in our lives with excessive omnipresence. In their volume cars intrude upon public space, and the way they occupy streets and open areas is rarely challenged." This unusual artist's book takes up a subject rarely deemed worthy of representation. "Virtually wherever there are people, there are cars and they are visually intermingling in whatever we see," Tillmans points out. "We are looking at the world from a car and cars are in the foreground, the background or in between of what is in our view." With over 100 color photographs and text by the artist himself, this new volume is an important addition to any photobook collection, and to our understanding of what it is to live in a world oversaturated with both cars and images.
