The Oxford Pictures
Between 1968 to 1978, Paddy Summerfield photographed Oxford students in the summer terms. No older than his subjects, he shared their uncertainties: "I was young and unsure and found a way to show this. I felt like an outsider, and lonely, that there was always something going on, parties and drinking, but elsewhere...We were all lonely together".
Once a Year
Over a period of almost seven years Sykes travelled the country photographing around 100 traditional British customs. Though inspired by the 19th century photographer Benjamin Stone, Homer Sykes approached the the events with a distinctly modern sensibility, creating dynamic images which focus mainly on the tradition that is being re-enacted against a background of everyday life.
The Teds
1956, sixty years ago, was a watershed year for Teds. In September that year the Bill Haley film Rock Around The Clock arrived in the UK. With five records in the top twenty, Haley was a major star and the film screened at some three hundred cinemas across the country. It wasn't long before the riots started. At London's Elephant and Castle Trocadero seats were slashed, and when the police attempted to disperse a throng of jiving, singing teenagers, bottles and fireworks were thrown; four shop windows were smashed. Two police were injured and nine Teds arrested. There was further trouble in many other cities including Manchester and London whilst in Birmingham, Blackpool, and Belfast the film was banned. Whilst the appearance of Teds can be traced back a couple of years earlier, 1956 was the true 'Year of The Ted' - the year in which they became central to youth culture in the UK and could no longer be ignored. Originally published in 1979 The Teds looks at this phenomenon. A classic of British documentary photography, it is a vivid and absorbing book combining image and text to tell a fascinating story that spans some three decades. Chris Steele-Perkins joined Magnum Photos in 1979. An award-winning photographer, he exhibits regularly throughout the world and continues to publish in major magazines worldwide. Alongside extensive work in the developing world he has continued to document Britain, with his 40 year overview, England, my England (2009) and A Place in the Country, his tenth book, published by Dewi Lewis.
Photographing Ina
In Photographing Ina, Philip Trager (born 1935), renowned for his black-and-white images, embraces color for the first time. Steidl-werk No. 23
The main idea behind Steidl-Werk No. 23 was to create a paper object never seen before. A joint project between Theseus Chan's Werk magazine and Steidl, it stems from Chan's and Steidl's mutual interest in art and books, the smell of ink, the texture of paper and the desire to subvert technology by creating work with a human imprint. Accordingly, this issue features a young Japanese artist, Masaho Anotani (born 1991), whose collage-like drawings are made almost entirely by hand. The design was inspired by a tightly taped, neatly formed package sent to the magazine by Anotani containing his printouts--an idea that found its way into the book itself, which comes as an entirely sealed entity. Building on the concept of creating and destructing the final product, a chaotic bricolage of "printed junk" is born.

60 Feet Road
In his new book, Robert Polidori presents us with a large-format photograph of a city block in an improvisational, auto-constructed settlement in Mumbai, India. In an almost seamless progression that appears to expand like an accordion or folding-screen, the photograph is composed of multiple images imperceptibly overlaid and welded together in a complex process to form a panoramic view. Applying remote sensing techniques that are normally used in space cartography to street photography, Polidori ventures a photographic attempt to come to terms with the phenomena of adjacencies, observing and beholding what's next to what. In this way he minutely scans the urban landscape, recording the precarious and temporary nature of the provisional and yet psychologically rich and in fact highly individualized dwellings. Robert Polidori was born in Montreal in 1951 and today lives in Los Angeles. His work has been the subject of exhibitions in New York, London, Brazil and Montreal, among others. He received the World Press Photo Award in 1997, the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography in 1999 and 2000 and Communication Arts awards in 2007 and 2008. The Borscht Belt, which features essays by Stefan Kanfer and Jenna Weissman Joselit, presents Marisa Scheinfeld's photographs of abandoned sites where resorts, hotels, and bungalow colonies once boomed in the Catskill Mountain region of upstate New York.The book assembles images Scheinfeld has shot inside and outside locations that once buzzed with life as year-round havens for generations of people. Some of the structures have been lying abandoned for periods ranging from four to twenty years, depending on the specific hotel or bungalow colony and the conditions under which it closed. Fault Lines
Oil is not new to Saskatchewan. Many of the wells found on farmland across the province date back to the 1950s when the industry began to spread. But there is little doubt that the recent boom (2006-2014) and subsequent downturn in unconventional oil production has reshaped rural lives and landscapes. While many small towns were suffering from depopulation and decline, others reoriented themselves around a booming oil industry. In place of the abandoned houses and shuttered shops found in many small towns in Saskatchewan, housing developments sprang up with new trucks and boats parked in driveways. Yet people in oil-producing areas also lived amid flare stacks that made them ill, had trouble finding housing due to vacancy rates that were among the lowest in the country, suffered through family breakdown because of long working hours and time spent away from home, and endured spills and leaks that contaminated their land. In the summer of 2014, at the height of the boom, geographer Emily Eaton and photographer Valerie Zink travelled to oil towns across the province, from the sea-can motel built from shipping containers on the outskirts of Estevan to seismic testing sites on Thunderchild First Nation's Sundance grounds.

Since the moment William Ferris's parents gave their twelve-year-old son a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye camera for Christmas in 1954, Ferris passionately began to photograph his world. He has never stopped. The sixties and seventies were a particularly significant period for Ferris as he became a pathbreaking documentarian of the American South. This beautiful, provocative collection of 100 of Ferris's photographs of the South, taken during this formative period, capture the power of his color photography. Color film, as Ferris points out in the book's introduction, was not commonly used by documentarians during the latter half of the twentieth century, but Ferris found color to work in significant ways in the photographic journals he created of his world in all its permutations and surprises.The volume opens with images of his family's farm and its workers -- family and hired -- southeast of Vicksburg, Mississippi.
