Jean Pigozzi
"We live in the age of the selfie," Jerry Saltz wrote in 2014.A few short years ago, one could say that people were still primarily interested in recording what was in front of them. Then, all of a sudden, people were turning their cameras around and taking pictures of themselves. But as it happens, Jean Pigozzi (born 1952)--Italian businessman, art collector, philanthropist and photographer--has been taking selfies for more than 40 years (even though he is neither an American nor a millennial)! If the selfie is still in its "Neolithic phase," as Saltz suggested, Pigozzi's photographs represent a previously unknown Paleolithic one, with Pigozzi taking selfies as early as the 1970s. Walead Beshty
Los Angeles-based artist and writer Walead Beshty (born 1976) started his Industrial Portraits series in 2008. He realizes them wherever he goes, asking all the art people he works with to pose in their working environment and working clothes: studio assistants, gallery staff, curators, lab technicians, critics, fellow artists, collectors, art handlers and even the "machines," which contribute to an artwork's progress from studio to gallery and beyond. Captioned first as "framer," "Fedex courier" or "darkroom assistant" and then identified with the location and date of the shoot, together his models form a nonhierarchical, kaleidoscopic yet very detailed "facebook" of the art world, following in part the tradition of great American anthropological photographic surveys. This publication gathers together the Industrial Portraits created between 2008 and 2012. A second volume will be published to span the subsequent years.

Jeannette Klute
The focus of Jeannette Klute's career at Eastman Kodak Company was on new discoveries in color photography, in particular, the Dye Transfer color process. Klute adopted the laborious Dye Transfer process in the interest of highlighting landscape and natural settings. She promoted environmental concerns in her views, joining a small group of landscape modernists including Elliot Porter, who chose the new aesthetics of advanced color technology over the conventional appearance of black and white nature settings. Still Lifes, U.s.a.
Upon his arrival in the US some 36 years ago, Rudy VanderLans embarked on a pan-American bus trip from New York to California. Overwhelmed by the experience, he rarely took out his camera, feeling unprepared for the challenge to do justice to the visual overload of the American environment. In 2016 he set out to retrace his route, this time with camera in hand and a determination to record the experience. If the work seems familiar at times, VanderLans is quick to name his influences: Its through the photographs of Ruscha, Shore, Friedlander, Eggleston, and others that I learned to look at America more discerningly, he says. I use their examples as a jumping off point to distill my own impressions. The haunting work that resulted from his journey, published exclusively in book form, creates the second entry in a trilogy of books that began with Still Lifes, California. These postcards from the road evoke both tranquility and solitude, entropy and loneliness in equal measures.
Fantasy Life
In 2002, Tabitha Soren first began photographing a group of minor league draft picks for the Oakland A's--young men coming into the major league farm system straight from high school or college. Since then, she has followed the players through their baseball lives, an alternate reality of long bus rides, on-field injuries, friendships and marriages entered and exited, constant motion, and very hard work, often for very little return. Some of the subjects, like Nick Swisher and Joe Blanton, have gone on to become well-known, respected players at the highest level of the game. Some left baseball to pursue other lines of work, such as selling insurance and coal mining. Others have struggled with poverty and even homelessness. Fifteen years after that first shoot, Fantasy Life portrays a selection of these stories, gathering together a richly textured series of photographs taken on the field and behind the scenes at games, along with commentaries by each of the players and memorabilia from their lives--from kindergarten-age baseball cards to x-rays of player injuries. Dave Eggers contributes five linked short stories that compellingly condense the roller-coaster ride of the minor-league everyman, from youthful pursuit of stardom through the slog of endless hardscrabble games, to that moment of realization that success may not be just around the corner after all. Additionally, a number of the featured players add their own real-life experiences of trying to make it to "The Show." Together, these elements evoke the enduring spirit of this quintessential American fantasy of making it in the major leagues.
Gladiatori Moderni
Bodies, sweat, the direct gaze; strength, courage, doubt; the visual and emotional alphabet of Piero Pompili's work is characterized by intensely striking images. For 15 years, the artist photographed with passion the world of boxing, which he frequented in Rome and Naples, in the gyms of the borgata. In these popular suburbs of Italy's major cities, where Calabrians and Sicilians were crammed in the postwar years, Piero Pompili captured an atmosphere redolent of Pasolini accents. The artist was as fascinated by his subject as with the social and urban landscape in which they lived, as evidenced by other aspects of his work: the working classes of Ostia, Roman-African hairdressers, etc. The source of this fascination was a childhood spent in the Borghesiana (a borgata in Rome), where he was born in 1967. The boxers were part of the landscape, and Pompili developed a deep attachment to these epic heroes who fought every day in his city. Hence a broad vision: through his photographic approach to boxing, Piero Pompili sought not only a formal truth, but also poetic, social and historical. The energy and passion of the common people of Rome had already fascinated Gericault (around the time of his "Course de Chevaux Libres", 1817); Caravaggio, as well, had selected models from the streets of Rome to make of his genre paintings true "tableaux realistes." The photographer's approach is realistic; rather than an excuse to show idealized men locked in a clash of the titans, he shows the modern gladiators as not gods but real men, beings of flesh with their fears and their ambitions. Down-to-earth, they have their doubts as they approach the fight, their rage to express, causing them to accept discipline and sacrifice. "The real boxer should be afraid," says Piero Pompili. Therefore, in order to truly show the intensity and the stakes of their commitment, the artist has chosen to focus not on the time of battle itself, but the moments behind the scenes; from the hard routine of daily workouts to the hours of meditation and rituals before the final climb into the ring, the tension is thick and palpable. Mostly photographed by themselves, the boxers are alone to face the waves of adrenaline and anxiety preceding the fight. One is struck by the eyes, which gaze upon the mirror, defiant and melancholy. The bodies themselves speak: the detail of a bulging vein, the expressive power of a back, a torso, reminiscent of armor ready to go into battle. Scrutinized in their workouts, studious, surprised in solitude, before the battle or in the silence of a deserted locker room, even in the hunted expressions that betray their looks or their bodies, Piero Pompili's gladiators finally deliver a secret paradox: they must win a victory, whether in the ring or in life, that is above all about themselves.

Underage
Underage is an award-winning photographic documentation aimed at understanding the minds of underage male prostitutes in Thailand in a most candid and visceral way. Photographer Ohm Phanphiroj uncovers the life, choice, and consequences that these young boys are experiencing. Underage prostitution results from several reasons, from being molested by family members and/or relatives, poverty, being a runaway, and drug addiction. Underage has been exhibited worldwide, among others at Newspace Center for Photography (2011), Sommerblut International Art Festival (2011), Noordelicht Photo Festival (2012), The Kinsey Institute (2013), Tally Beck Contemporary (2014), Miami Art Festival (2014), and Documentary Arts Asia (2014). Many photographers have tried to capture the elusive and enigmatic figure of Fidel Castro--the man behind the beard. This book presents a unique and intimate perspective of the Cuban leader through the camera lens of his son, Alex Castro, revealing the gaze of a photographer as well as that of a son. It captures Castro in his retirement years with personalities from the fields of culture and politics, including members of Robert Kennedy's family and President Carter. Born in 1963 and an engineer by profession, Alex Castro worked as a cinematographer and director at Mundo Latino, Cuba.
Humanoid
This is the first and only book of portraits of android and humanoid robots. The robots in these photographs by Max Aguilera-Hellweg, a photojournalist for 40 years whose work has appeared in Life, NYT Magazine, Rolling Stone, Discover, Scientific American, Time, and National Geographic, are some of the most well known in the world of humanoid robotics. The photographs explore the many ways scientists and engineers are creating robots with human attributes, qualities, and abilities, and the means by which the robots engage us in what is known as human-robot interaction. The relationship of humans to robots can be as subtle as nonverbal communication; as intuitive as whether you should pass someone on the left or pass on the right to avoid sidewalk salsa; as intimate as developing an affectionate personal relationship with a machine, or as never before conceived of, but now as important as life and death--autonomous robots programmed for ethical decision making in the battlefield. Some of the humanoid robots portrayed in this profound book, such as Bina48, Joey Chaos, and Geminoid-F have humanlike skin, hair, hands, even fingernails--they have been created to resemble with extreme accuracy an actual human being. Other humanoids are devoid of such external attributes but replicate the anatomy of a human--arms, legs, torso, a head and eyes--like, for example, the Terminator, not as Arnold Schwarzenegger but when he is all machine. Some of Aguilera-Hellweg's photographs reveal the different ways robot scientists approach the same engineering and design problem. BioBiped1, for instance, a humanoid based on biomimetics, comprised of a torso and pair of legs, has joints and moving parts modeled on human biology and systems, harnessing what nature has solved. Another such humanoid, aptly named Vocal Robot, consists of a pair of artificial lungs and a vocal chord from which it speaks. During the creation of many of these photos, an hour-long documentary, Au Couer des Robots (In the Heart of Robots), was shot. The English-language version is in postproduction and will soon seek distribution here and internationally. Max Aguilera-Hellweg's astonishing, gorgeous photography open our eyes to this brave new world in which humanoid robots--exciting, thrilling, frightening to some, strange to others, controversial, lifesaving--will change our lives in countless ways.

In 1911, a one-track suspension bridge was constructed over the gorge of the Little Colorado River, bypassing a treacherous river crossing and opening travel to northern Arizona.
