Byline Baltimore
Bill Hughes' Byline Baltimore covers the field from a commentary on the "Presidential Campaign from Hell," (2016), to an article on the zany comedian, Roseanne Barr, to the sex scandals in two city Catholic schools, to an essay that asks this probing question: "What Is Deep State." Hughes has enjoyed writing about Baltimore's endearing personalities, such as: Al Kaline, Mary Avara, Helen Delich Bentley, Marilyn Mosby, John Waters, Amy Davis, Matt Porterfield and Judge Tom Ward. Each of his 81 commentaries/reports tells a story. All photos/illustrations are by him.
Rachel Cobb
"In beautifully evocative stills, a photographer captures the restless swirl of Province's famous wind." -Kim Hubbard, PeopleMistral is a portrait of Provence seen through its legendary wind. Photographer Rachel Cobb illustrates the effects of this relentless wind that funnels down the Rh繫ne Valley, periodically gusting to 120 km per hour--hurricane strength on the Beaufort wind force scale. The region has, accordingly, adjusted to accommodate the mistral's impact. Some houses are built the traditional way, with few or no windows on the windward side and the main entrance on the sheltered side. Heavy stones hold down terra-cotta roof tiles. Rows of trees lining fields create windbreaks to shield crops.Cobb spent years chasing this capricious wind, challenging herself to photograph the invisible. As she became sensitive to its rhythms and effects, Cobb realized the mistral was not just a weather phenomenon; it was an integral part of the fabric of Proven癟al life. It was everywhere, yet always unseen.Mistral captures this invisible force of nature through its effects: a leaf caught in flight, a bride tangled in her veil, spider webs oriented to withstand the wind and grapes lashed by powerful gusts ("You can taste the wine better when the mistral blows," a Ch璽teauneuf-du-Pape winemaker says). Writers have also tried their hand at conjuring this ungraspable phenomenon. Excerpts from writings by Paul Auster, Lawrence Durrell, Jean Giono and Fr矇d矇ric Mistral are included in this volume, a luminous evocation of nature's unseen power.
Recovered Memory
Recovered Memory: New York and Paris 1960-1980 is a meditation on time and place: before the internet and 24/7 news; when one could visit the Eiffel Tower without seeing police and automatic weapons, when a ride on the New York subway cost 15 cents, when the smell of fresh-baked baguettes wafted over nearly every Parisian neighborhood, and when the Coney Island parachute ride still thrilled thousands. Van Riper's striking black and white photographs spanning twenty years, coupled with his eloquent texts, capture the 20th-century romance and grit of New York more than a half century ago, and Paris, some forty years ago. It was a time when the pace of life was slower and somehow less threatening, people talked to each other instead of texting on their iPhones, and you literally had to stop and smell the coffee.
Trees
Art Wolfe's immersive photos capture the wonder humans have felt about trees for millennia. From the biblical Tree of Life to the Native American Tree of Peace, trees have played an archetypal role in human culture and spirituality since time immemorial. An integral part of a variety of faiths--from Buddhism and Hinduism to Native American and aboriginal religions--trees were venerated long before any written historical records existed. Through the vivid images of legendary photographer Art Wolfe, Trees focuses on both individual specimens and entire forests, and offers a sweeping yet intimate look at an arboreal world that spans six continents. Author Gregory McNamee weaves a diverse and global account of the myths, cultures, and traditions that convey the long-standing symbiosis between trees and humans, and renowned ethnobotanist Wade Davis anchors the text with a penetrating introduction. Humans have always shared this planet with trees, and Trees by Art Wolfe is a breathtaking journey through and homage to that relationship and its past, present, and future.

The Photoshop Toolbox
In The Photoshop Toolbox, photographer and bestselling author Glyn Dewis breaks down Photoshop into just three main features: layer masks, brushes, and blend modes. Written specifically for photographers with little knowledge of Photoshop, this book breaks down the how, what, and why of Photoshop basics. Adobe Photoshop is one of the most powerful image-editing applications ever created, but it is also widely thought to be difficult to learn, infinite in scope, and nearly impossible to master. For these reasons, many photographers choose to stay exclusively with Lightroom for all their photography needs. But for those photographers who subscribe to the Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan--which includes both Lightroom and Photoshop--to leave Photoshop unopened and unexplored is to deny yourself the ability to take your creativity and expression to a whole new level. In The Photoshop Toolbox, photographer and bestselling author Glyn Dewis breaks down Photoshop into just three main features: layer masks, brushes, and blend modes. Glyn has taught thousands online, in person, and through his bestselling books The Photoshop Workbook and Photograph Like a Thief. Over and over, he has recognized that once a user truly understands these three tools, there is nothing holding them back from achieving whatever they want to accomplish in Photoshop. With Glyn explaining not only the "what" but also the "why" behind layer masks, brushes, and blend modes, you're empowered to think beyond each specific example and to ask that all-powerful question, "What would happen if I used that technique on this other image?"Written expressly for photographers with little knowledge of Photoshop, in The Photoshop Toolbox you'll learn: - Photoshop basics: Explore Photoshop's Workspace, Tool Bar, Options Bar, Properties, and Layers- Layer masks: Learn the basics of layer masks, as well as specific techniques that incorporate cutouts, removing halos, Content Aware Fill, Look Up Tables (LUTs), and more-Brushes: Brushes are useful for everything from cutouts to creating special effects like snow, debris, grass, and even your own signature- Blend modes: Use blend modes for tricky selections, brightening and darkening an image, and tidying up a layer mask- Additional tips, tricks, and techniques: Glyn devotes an entire chapter to "extra" techniques such as removing reddening skin, creating smoke, matching color, and building depth in your image with contrast, light, and sharpnessFinally, in the last chapter of the book, Glyn brings it all together with a start-to-finish project concentrating on photo retouching skills.
J. S. Wooley
In 1880, Jesse Sumner Wooley, an energetic and entrepreneurial thirteen-year-old farm boy from Saratoga County, took a job as an errand boy for a pair of town photographers. This summer job led to a career that would define Wooley's life. From that early start, Wooley went on to become a prominent businessman and inventive photographer in Upstate New York. This volume tells the fascinating story of Wooley's rise from his impoverished rural roots to a position of success and prosperity as an artist who illuminated twentieth-century bourgeois American culture through his photography. Including more than one hundred color and duotone photographs from his corpus, including a gallery of images from Matt Finley's private collection, the book reveals the range of Wooley's work: Adirondack panoramas, architectural studies, travel shows depicting the American west and Europe, and documentary photographs of contemporary events. Wooley's career is situated within the context of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century town photography, a field dominated by male commercial photographers who captured the day-to-day events of rural and town life. Like many of these professional photographers, Wooley embraced innovations in cameras, producing photo postcards and panoramic photography to satisfy the growing demand for images as souvenirs. J. S. Wooley showcases the beauty of the Adirondack region as Wooley experienced it, the vital importance of town photographers, and the emergence of photography as a powerful medium to expose the American landscape.

Dewey Nicks
"Dewey Nicks' ebullient fashion photography reminds you that people have forgotten how to have fun in fashion." -The New York TimesAmerican photographer Dewey Nicks roared into the 1990s magazine world by filling his shoots with fascinating people and a vibe of boundless energy and nonstop fun. Publications such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, W and Vanity Fair kept Nicks moving seamlessly between celebrity, fashion and advertising assignments, his portfolio amassing a who's who of iconic women, including Cindy Crawford, Natalie Portman, Sofia Coppola, Patricia Arquette, Shalom Harlow and Cher, to name only a few.Nicks recently found a forgotten box buried deep in his archive with thousands of Polaroids from his 1990s photo sessions. These one-of-a-kind favorites saved from hundreds of shoots, both private and assigned, offer an intimate portrait into Nicks' life, friends and work. The immediacy of Polaroids combined with the natural fading of the physical print after decades in a shoebox makes each of these images singularly unique and tangibly genuine. Nicks was so smitten with this time capsule of images that he immediately shared them with his frequent collaborator, book designer and publisher Tom Adler, and this beautifully produced book was born.
Displaced
"This sorry episode has been illuminated in books and documentaries. But I've never felt its emotional texture--the unexpected mix of dereliction and upstanding hopefulness--so vividly as in this set of photographs taken by Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange and five others, among them an artist incarcerated at Manzanar." -Pico IyerIn the weeks following the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, American suspicion and distrust of its Japanese American population became widespread. The US government soon ordered all Japanese Americans (two thirds of them American citizens) living on the West Coast to report to assembly centers for eventual transfer to internment camps, openly referred to by the New York Times as "concentration camps." Within a few months of Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066; soon after, the War Relocation Authority (WRA) was established and by the end of March, the first of 10,000 Japanese evacuees arrived in Manzanar, an internment camp in the Owens Valley desert at the foot of the Sierras. Families were given one to two weeks' notice and were allowed to pack only what they could carry. Businesses were shuttered and farms and equipment were sold at bargain prices. Upon arrival at Manzanar, each person was assigned to a barrack, given a cot, blankets and a canvas bag to be filled with straw in order to create their own mattresses.Dorothea Lange was hired by the WRA to photograph the mass evacuation; she worked into the first months of the internment until she was fired by WRA staff for her "sympathetic" approach. Many of her photographs were seized by the government and largely unseen by the public for a half century. More than a year later, Manzanar Project Director Ralph Merritt hired Ansel Adams to document life at the camp. Lange and Adams were also joined by WRA photographers Russell Lee, Clem Albers and Francis Stewart. Two Japanese internees, Toyo Miyatake and Jack Iwata, secretly photographed life within the camp with a smuggled camera.Gathered together in this volume, these images express the dignity and determination of the Japanese Americans in the face of injustice and humiliation. Today the tragic circumstances surrounding displaced and detained people around the world only strengthen the impact of these photos taken 75 years ago.
Ronis by Ronis
Willy Ronis curated and commentated on the iconic images featured in this beautiful volume that retraces his career and contributions to photography and photojournalism. A key figure in twentieth-century photography, Willy Ronis conveyed the poetic reality of postwar Paris and Provence in iconic black-and-white photographs. Influenced by Alfred Stieglitz and Ansel Adams, and amicable with his contemporary Magnum photographers, Ronis was the first French photographer to contribute to Life magazine. In the 1950s, MoMA curator Edward Steichen featured Ronis--along with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau, and Brassa簿--in the groundbreaking exhibitions The Family of Man and Five French Photographers. Throughout his life, this powerhouse of humanist photography kept meticulous records of his work, curating each era into albums, which are reproduced here for the first time. Timeless photographs of postwar France and its inhabitants are accompanied by the photographer's original observations and comments, framing the images within their technical and historical context. Photography historian Matthieu Rivallin's critical perspective adds nuance to the photographer's notes, and the ensemble is a groundbreaking and definitive reference on the myriad aspects of the artists' immense career and an essential volume for all photography aficionados.
Compostion
A book of 17 photographs taken of my compost caddy, whenever I found the contents interesting because of the colours or composition of elements or both. The photographs were taken with natural light from a skylight which gives a variation in the speed and aperture used in each shot. This information is recorded on the facing page with date of capture. The camera used was always a Sigma DP2 with Foveon sensor.Finding beauty in chaos and decomposition appealed to my anarchist and anti-art sensibility. Representing still life or flora at the peak of its perfection reeks of petrified ideologies. Decomposition suggests that the formal relations we hold dear are subject to a continual state of change. Matter readied for breakdown by benign organisms reminds me that the world is 'on our side'. What is discarded can contribute to tomorrows new growth. There are other ways of looking at these photographs. The seasons are partly represented by allotment produce and partly denied by unseasonal supermarket fare. Within these patterns the photos also give a partial picture of what we did and didn't eat during the two years or so that it took to do this project. There is also a way of seeing them as painterly compositions of abstracted colours and shapes that may have been a part of the subconscious criteria by which I would choose to take a photograph at any given moment. Was it a way of negotiating an escape from, or renewing the compositional presets that every aspiring artist absorbs from his or her culture?Or the photos could simply be used as an observational game to name the fruit and vegetables shown? And oh, yes, we do have an allotment so there is that in the mix as well.

Always armed with a 35mm camera, he successfully photographed nearly every rapper of note since the genre's inception, making him the go-to photographer for magazines like Word Up and Rap Masters. Double Exposure
After serving in World War II, John Glanton returned home to Minnesota and began taking his camera around the streets, parks, clubs, restaurants, and private homes of Minneapolis, capturing the sights and scenes of everyday life for African Americans in the city. The images--from intimate portraits to public gatherings--reveal a dynamic and diverse community at a time when the nation was entering the postwar boom but before the civil rights movement had taken root. Glanton's photos offer a rare look into the lives and lifestyles of families and individuals often left out of histories of Minnesota's past, showing people at work and play, young and old, happy and sad. The images highlight black-owned businesses of the day, the music and club scene, and weddings and other family occasions to depict the experiences of African American people as presented through the lens of an African American photographer.Long forgotten in the garage of a family member, the photo negatives were recently rediscovered and digitized. A selection of 200 of the more than 800 images are featured here, along with commentary that further illuminates the lives and experiences of African Americans in postwar Minnesota.
Animal Kingdom
The arresting studio portraits featured in this animal photography coffee table book capture the beauty, power, and even humor of 150 furry and feathered species. Acclaimed photographer Randal Ford celebrates our fascination with and love of animals through his engaging portraits of the animal kingdom. A young male lion cub seems to sport a rebellious mohawk; a chimpanzee adopts a pensive pose; a curious duckling cocks his head at the camera lens and flaps his wings. The featured animals cover a wide range, from birds such as the African crane, cockatoos, flamingos, and roosters, to big cats such as tigers, cheetahs, and leopards, to Arabian horses, bulls, and Longhorn sheep, among many others. Bird and animal lovers will be drawn to the powerful and emotionally engaging images that seem to reveal the individual character of the other animals that share the Earth with us. Elegantly designed and packaged, this book will be the perfect gift and addition to the home of any lover of animals or fine photography.
Michael Christopher Brown
Yo Soy Fidel follows the cort癡ge of Fidel Castro, former Cuban revolutionary and politician, over a period of several days in late 2016. American photographer Michael Christopher Brown (born 1978) leaned out of a rear passenger window of his passing vehicle in order to photograph Cubans waiting alongside the highway for Fidel's military convoy, carrying his cremated remains from Havana to Santiago, to pass. The route mirrored Fidel's post-revolution journey from Santiago to Havana in 1959, which helped solidify his image as hero and legend. In Yo Soy Fidel, fragments of this initial image have survived his death though perhaps inevitably lead to a question of what is to come. A country largely seen for half a century as a symbol of dignity and hope in the fight against imperialism, Cuba has a choice: to stay true to Fidel's revolutionary path or embrace globalization and all it entails.

Fish Town
Fish Town is an inspired documentary project focused on preserving, through photography and oral history recordings, the cultural and environmental remains of southeastern Louisiana's fishing communities. Owing to a dying wild-caught seafood industry and a rapidly vanishing coastline, the places and people who are multigenerations deep in Louisiana's fishing traditions have been quietly slipping into extinction for decades, many without a form of historic preservation. These are the same towns that not only have made New Orleans an epicenter of fresh seafood dining but have traditionally served as getaway places for New Orleanian families, an escape to nature where time can be spent together sport fishing on the lakes and bayous and gathering around crab and crawfish boils. J. T. Blatty has been traveling "down the road" from her home in New Orleans since 2009, capturing these places and people as no one previously has. Fish Town includes 137 color photographs taken by Blatty between 2012 and 2017. Interspersed throughout are text narratives transcribed from audio recordings with long-standing members of the fishing communities, many of whose ancestors came to Louisiana during the late 1600s. J. T. Blatty is a freelance photographer, writer, and artist based in New Orleans. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally and have appeared in CNN Photos, Charleston Magazine, National Geographic Traveler, The Daily Beast, the Oxford American, Savannah Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, and USA Today, among other publications. Craig E. Colten is the Carl O. Sauer Professor of Geography at Louisiana State University and the author, most recently, of Southern Waters: The Limits to Abundance. Distributed for George F. Visions of the Tallgrass
In centuries long past, a vast swath of grassland swept down the center of North America, from Canada's Prairie Provinces to central Texas. This once-plentiful prairie has now all but disappeared. Humans have grazed, mowed, and plowed the plains, dammed the rivers, and imposed their will on the land and its creatures. Fortunately, some remnants have survived, including the Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in northeastern Oklahoma. In this visually stunning volume, wildlife photographer Harvey Payne and historian James P. Ronda offer an intimate look at and into one of America's Last Great Places. Spanning nearly 40,000 acres in Oklahoma's Osage County, the Preserve is a living witness to a world that once existed. But the Osage prairie is not a museum or theme park--and it is not frozen in time. Under the stewardship of The Nature Conservancy, which has overseen its restoration, the Preserve lives on as a fully functioning ecosystem. And for twenty-five years, Payne and Ronda have explored these lands, together and in solitude. Rendered here in brilliant color and paired with Ronda's informative yet deeply personal commentary, Payne's photographs open our eyes to the ever-changing world of the Tallgrass Preserve. In chapters focused on grass, sky, birds, bison, and fire, Ronda and Payne reveal that the "Big Empty" is, in fact, teeming with life. Through interwoven images and words, Visions of the Tallgrass shows that our nation's grasslands are sacred ground, a priceless piece of our American past--and future.

I Let the Dogs Out
Here is a tongue-in-cheek photo guidebook that shows you how to select the ideal shelter dog when considering one for adoption. Every dog appearing on these pages was living at the Cleveland Animal Protective League at the time their pictures were taken, and was photographed while working and/or playing with the author in the course of his activities as a volunteer. This book is intended to capture the quirks, charm, and unwavering spirit of its subjects as they await adoption by their "forever families." Page 1 of 11
Historic Churches in Texas
The story of historic churches in Texas is the story of the Anglo-American and European immigrants in Texas. It is the story of the struggle of three cultures trying to coexist in an empty and often hostile land: the Native Americans, the Mexicans, and the immigrants. It is the story of circuit-riding preachers tirelessly, clandestinely crisscrossing Texas, bringing the Protestant word of God to the people in a land where, prior to Texas's independence, only Catholicism was legal. It is the story of a people who successfully fought and won their independence to build a nation. It is the story of Texas.Over the past ten years, my wife and I have visited and photographed almost one thousand historic churches in Texas. We have seen stunningly beautiful stained-glass windows, listened to the rich tones of Texas's largest organ, and prayed in the smallest active Catholic Church in the world. We visited the oldest Polish church in the United States in Panna Maria, lingered with spirits in an abandoned church in Nacogdoches, and were dazzled by the bright colors and designs found in the Catholic Cathedral in Beaumont. In Berlin, we held a silver communion cup donated to the church in 1889, and in San Antonio we touched the sarcophagus where the remains of Alamo heroes William Travis, David Crockett, and James Bowie are said to be kept. The photographs and text, which was jointly written by William and Mary Pamela Schaefer, are attempts to capture the important history and the quiet beauty of the 186 historic Texas churches presented in this book.

From the mighty halls of ancient Alexandria to the coffered ceilings of the Morgan Library in New York, human beings have had a long, enraptured relationship with libraries. Like no other concept and like no other space, the collection of knowledge, learning, and imagination offers a sense of infinite possibility. It's the unrivaled realm of discovery, where every faded manuscript or mighty clothbound tome might reveal a provocative new idea, a far-flung fantasy, an ancient belief, a religious conviction, or a whole new way of being in the world. In this new photographic journey, Massimo Listri travels to some of the oldest and finest libraries to reveal their architectural, historical, and imaginative wonder. Through great wooden doors, up spiraling staircases, and along exquisite, shelf-lined corridors, he leads us through outstanding private, public, educational, and monastic libraries, dating as far back as 766. Between them, these medieval, classical, baroque, rococo, and 19th-century institutions hold some of the most precious records of human thought and deed, inscribed and printed in manuscripts, volumes, papyrus scrolls, and incunabula. In each, Listri's poised images capture the library's unique atmosphere, as much as their most prized holdings and design details. Featured libraries include the papal collections of the Vatican Apostolic Library, Trinity College Library, home to the Book of Kells and Book of Durrow, and the holdings of the Laurentian Library in Florence, the private library of the powerful House of Medici, designed by Michelangelo. With meticulous descriptions accompanying each featured library, we learn not only of the libraries' astonishing holdings--from which highlights are illustrated--but also of their often lively, turbulent, or controversial pasts. Like Altenburg Abbey in Austria, an outpost of imperial Catholicism repeatedly destroyed during the European wars of religion, or the Franciscan monastery in Lima, Peru, with its horde of archival Inquisition documents. At once a bibliophile beauty pageant, an ode to knowledge, and an evocation of the particular magic of print, Massimo Listri. The World's Most Beautiful Libraries is above all a cultural-historical pilgrimage to the heart of our halls of learning, to the stories they tell, as much as those they gather in printed matter along polished shelves.
Mario Carnicelli
The colors, textures, people, fashions and street life of '60s AmericaAmerican Voyage is a beautiful portrait of 1960s America from Italian photographer Mario Carnicelli (born 1937), recently rediscovered after 50 years and published here for the first time. Featuring over 150 color and black-and-white images, this stunning work transcends other books on similar subject matter; the photographs are truly compelling, drawing the reader/viewer into Carnicelli's world. In 1966, Mario Carnicelli won first place in a national Italian photography competition sponsored by Popular Photography magazine, Mamiya and Pentax. The prize was a scholarship to photograph America. Carnicelli approached the country as an outsider, and yet his perspective managed to capture the essence of the American experience. He was fascinated by the almost reckless freedom offered by America, with its mix of cultures and traditions, its fashion and individuality; at the same time he was aware of a pervading loneliness and rootlessness in people separated from family and clan. His photographs are a captivating, optimistic and contemplative look at the complexity of ordinary people living the American dream.
Pastel Moods
Maria Vazquez's photography proves that urban structures and daily routine can take on a dreamy, quixotic sentiment with the right contrasts. No matter where in the world she is, she can always find the same welcoming beauty in each town, city or country, in the form of colourful blossoms, buildings and details. Drawing upon color psychology, Maria's book Pastel Mood Pallets examine how each particular colour tone inspires certain states of mind, and how these reflect how we go about our life. What draws us to the cafes we visit, the buildings we live in? How does colour translate our personality via fashion pieces? How does natures' own colour palette affect our mood? Focusing on the colours most predominant in her work, each chapter explores a different color tone, how it is used to speak to our psyche and what it evokes in us. Bathed in pastel hues, this book captures the deeper meaning behind how the colors we are surrounded by impact our mood.

Failed Images
Failed Images approaches photography in terms of its divergence from the reality it would claim to show. How does the photograph transform that which exists before the camera? A variety of factors influence the way photography constructs its images--not only the technical features of the medium, but also the conventions that have sprung up within it, governing the field from the most formal portraits to the quickest "snapshots." Combining cultural theory with many case studies, Failed Images offers a different approach to photography, celebrating the medium's range of possible modes of image-making. In this book the photographic image is explored through what might seem to be its outliers--photographic practices that resist the presumed dominant approaches to the medium. These counter-practices include staged photography, blurred photography, archival photography, and under- and overexposed photography.

Listening in
St. Mary's County is where colonial Maryland began, with the establishment of St. Mary's City on the site of an ancient Yaocomico village as Maryland's first capital in 1634. Southern Maryland has been home to human occupation for at least 12,000 years, and since 1634 the area has seen myriad changes through the rise and fall of tobacco agriculture and its associated enslaved labor to its current status as a bedroom community to Washington, DC, and as home to the Patuxent Naval Air Station. Although historically rural, the area is slowly giving rise to suburban development, and so ties to the past become increasingly important. In Listening In, Merideth Taylor provides a captivating, even pioneering approach to capturing the land and life of Maryland's "mother county." She integrates her own engaging photographs of buildings of all kinds, many of them in disrepair, with imaginative text called "ghost stories" that relate to the photographs in one way or another. These stories are based on living oral histories that Taylor has heard over the many years she has lived in the area. And so we gain a true sense of what life in St. Mary's County was--and the place it is becoming.
Public, Private, Secret
Public, Private, Secret explores the roles that photography and video play in the crafting of identity, and the reconfiguration of social conventions that de ne our public and private selves. Consciously framed by our present era, this collection of essays, interviews, and reflections assesses how our image-making and consumption patterns are embedded and implicated in a wider matrix of online behavior and social codes, which in turn give images a life of their own. Within this context, our visual creations and online activities blur and remove conventional delineations between public and private (and sometimes secret) expression; in fact, they multiply and expand the number of potential selves in the contemporary image-centric world. The writings address the various disruptions, resistances, and subversions that artists propose to the limited versions of race, gender, sexuality, and autonomy that populate mainstream popular culture. In so doing, they anticipate a future for our image-world rich with diversity and alterity, one that can be shaped and influenced by the agency of self- representation.

Multifaceted
The photos are multifaceted because they often show the subject from various angles in the same image. We feel a connection to those who look back at us. Hans is very inventive when it comes to creating the images he wants. He is a technical wizard who can create the picture he imagines in the studio and a lighting wizard who can provide a sense of composition which is powerful and seductive. The subjects are intriguing and the photos are beautiful and complicated. He tests the viewers' imagination. Sometimes he plays with the images, adding subjects, viewing them from different sides, and creating arresting shapes and images. So each photograph is carefully constructed and creates a stunning image when completed. Hans models are alluring and suggestive. They seem to be challenging you to look at them. Hans included this time again, provocative female models to interact with stunning male subjects. Some images are like colorful paintings, almost abstract. The photographs have so much variety one could spend hours with them and not get bored. This seventh volume continues the riveting body of work that Hans Fahrmeyer has created. Perhaps it is his most adventurous. Again, you will be surprised by his imaginative display of presenting art in a bold new way.
