Thresholds
The book includes photograps from several walks between Anglesea and Lorne. A map shows the locale of each walk on which photographs were taken and an introduction creates my experience of the atmosphere in each location. For almost twenty years I have wondered along coast and through forrest and scrub along the Southern Ocean of Victoria and found respite from the busy and busteling city. The sights, sounds and natures music on this coast have offered me a new way of seeing and experiencing our world. Anyone who is even moderately fit will be able to find their way to the threshold and wonder the paths that I have trod.I hope that each excurtion will bring you as much joy and rejuvination as this magnificnet part of our world has brought me.
The Hunt
?lvaro Laiz documents life among the Udege as they go on hunt in the Primorsky Krai region in Russia, an extremely remote area. For the Udege people, tigers hold a special status in both their culture and environment. Though the Udege hunt animals as part of their survival, as a spiritual and superstitious people they do not believe in killing tigers. Beyond mere practical considerations of the tiger's role in the local ecosystem, keeping away the more indiscriminate killers like wolves and bears, the Udege acknowledge the tigers as clever, calculating predators, better appeased than confronted. Tigers don't just attack: they strategize and stalk, silently and patiently. In 1997 a Russian poacher called Markov came across the trail of a enormous Amur tiger. Despite the risk, Markov saw the tiger's footprints as a promise for a better life. He shot the tiger, but was not able to kill it. Udege people believe that if someone attacks a tiger without good reason, Amba, the dark side of the tiger, will hunt him down. Without realising it, Markov had unleashed the Amba. Over the following 72 hours the animal tracked him down and killed him. Later investigations suggested that the tiger planned its movements with a rare mix of strategy and instinct and most importantly, with a chilling clarity of purpose: Amba was seeking revenge. This animistic belief constitutes the leitmotiv to experience the impact of nature in the Udege communities across one of the last remnants of shamanism: the culture of the hunter.
Battleship Island
In July 2015, MAKIKO was granted rare permission to photograph the restricted zone of Battleship Island, shortly after it was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The tiny, fortress-like island (also known as 'Hashima' or 'Gunkanjima') lies just off the coast of Nagasaki. Ringed by a seawall, and covered in tightly packed buildings, it was once the most densely populated place on Earth. Now it is a ghost town - completely uninhabited for more than forty years. From 1887 onwards, its network of undersea coalmines became important during Japan's rapid industrialisation. But it also has a dark period in its history: from the 1930s through to the end of the Second World War forced labour was introduced. The 2017 Korean film The Battleship Island depicts a fictional story based on the plight of Korean miners brought there. The island also featured as a dramatic location in the 2012 James Bond film, Skyfall. Abandoned in 1974, all that now remains is the dramatic sea wall that surrounds it, and its tightly packed, concrete buildings, undisturbed except by nature. In the book, archive photographs break the eerie silence of the island's contemporary landscape and through the memories of a former resident of the island, MAKIKO brings her imagination to bear on what life was like there as a child - a place described to her as a childhood paradise.
American Fair
The essence of the American Fair has not changed much over the past century. As the social and cultural fabric of the United States has evolved considerably, the fairs continue to draw attendance from across wide swaths of the heartland, providing a place for far-flung citizens of a particular county or state to maintain community and celebrate elements of their culture that recall some of the most nostalgic ideals of America. The Akron Sound
Chrissie Hynde, Devo..Rubber City Rebels...The Rubber City's rebel musical rootsMusic made in Akron symbolized an attitude more so than a singular sound. Crafted by kids hell-bent on not following their parents into the rubber plants, the music was an intentional antithesis of Top 40 radio. Call it punk or call it new wave, but in a short few years, major labels signed Chrissie Hynde, Devo, the Waitresses, Tin Huey, the Bizarros, the Rubber City Rebels and Rachel Sweet. They had their own bars, the Crypt and the Bank. They had their own label, Clone Records. They even had their own recording space, Bushflow Studios. London's Stiff Records released an Akron compilation album, and suddenly there were "Akron Nights" in London clubs and CBGB was waiving covers for people with Akron IDs. Author Calvin Rydbom of the "Akron Sound" Museum remembers that short time when the Rubber City was the place.

The Lament
Harvey Benge's new book, The Lament, is his eighth bookwork published by us. It continues his investigation into the nature of things through a celebration of the democracy of images. Questions are asked though few answers given. These are places we have all been, if only in the mind. As with all Benge's projects, The Lament is partly fiction and partly autobiographical. The pictures mine the unusual and the perverse. They make strange connections and exploit the unexpected. Nothing is as it seems, though we nevertheless sense that there is a truth in everything. Mystery prevails and it is up to the viewer to bring his or her own life experience to the reading of the work. The Lament deals with loss, change and the inevitability of impermanence. All thoughts, emotions and circumstances that each and every one us have experienced and have dealt with in our lives. There is sexual misadventure too. Yet despite the apparent angst, Benge isn't about to slit his wrists anytime soon: a wry sense of humour runs through the work and if you look hard enough you might even spot a sense of optimism.

N. O. K. -Next Of Kin, examines the ways in which American families memorialize their relatives killed in military conflict. The photographs, spanning 2014-2017, focus on the personal altars and private displays of mementos and objects dedicated to lost soldiers. This response from families must be part of the public discourse on war and its aftermath. N. O. K. Images of Depression-era Louisiana
In the 1930s, the U.S. government famously sent photographers across the country to document on film the need for federal assistance in rural areas. Dorothea Lange's well-known image Migrant Mother came from this effort, along with thousands of other photographs. Ben Shahn, Russell Lee, and Marion Post Wolcott contributed to this compelling body of images. As primary photographers for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) in the state of Louisiana, the three took more than 2,600 photographs, recording the modest homes, family gatherings, and working lives of citizens across the state. Lyle Ashton Harris
Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, a radical cultural scene emerged in cities across the globe, finding expression in the galleries, nightclubs, and bedrooms of New York, London, Los Angeles, and Rome. In Lyle Ashton Harris: Today I Shall Judge Nothing That Occurs, the artist's archive of 35 mm Ektachrome images are presented alongside journal entries and recollections from a host of artistic and cultural figures. Sights, Sounds, Soul
During the 1970s and '80s, photographer Charles Chamblis captured the vibrant social and artistic life of the Twin Cities African American community. Musicians and other artists are shown performing, dancing, and interacting with enthusiastic audiences at once-thriving but now lost clubs, such as the Taste Show Lounge, Riverview Supper Club, Fox Trap, Nacirema Club, and others on Minneapolis's north and south sides. The Essential Marilyn Monroe by Milton H. Greene

Greene passed in 1985, thinking his life's work was succumbing to the ravages of time. His eldest son, Joshua, began a journey to meticulously restore his father's legacy. A photographer himself, Joshua spent years researching ways to restore his father's photographs as well as cataloging and promoting Milton's vast body of work all over the world. Light and Air
A trailblazer for women photographers in the South, North Carolina's Bayard Wootten (1875-1959) overcame economic hardship, gender discrimination, and the obscurity of a small-town upbringing to become the state's most significant early female photographer. This advocate of equality for women combined an artistic vision of photography with determination and a love of adventure to forge a distinguished career spanning half a century. Originally trained as an artist, Wootten worked in photography's pictorial tradition, emphasizing artistic effect in her images at a time when realistic and documentary photography increasingly dominated the medium. Traveling throughout North Carolina and surrounding states, she turned the artistry of her eye and lens on the people and places she encountered. Having opened a studio in her hometown of New Bern in 1905, Wootten moved to Chapel Hill in 1928, where her clients included the University of North Carolina. Between 1932 and 1941, she also provided photographs for six books--including Cabins in the Laurel, Old Homes and Gardens of North Carolina, and Charleston: Azaleas and Old Bricks--lectured extensively, and exhibited her photographs as far away as New York and Massachusetts.Light and Air features 190 illustrations, including 136 duotone reproductions of Wootten's photographs taken in North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee--many of which have never before been published. Though she was an accomplished landscape and architectural photographer, some of Wootten's most notable images were the portraits she crafted of black and white Americans in the lower reaches of society, working people whom other photographers often ignored. These images are perhaps her most enduring legacy.
