RFK

"Paul Fusco: RFK," published during the fortieth anniversary of Robert F. Kennedy's assassination, is the long-awaited follow-up to Fusco's acclaimed "RFK Funeral Train," a body of work heralded as a contemporary classic. This historical new publication features more than 70 never-before-seen images, many selected from the untapped treasure trove of slides that comprise the Library of Congress' "Look" Magazine Collection. As a staff photographer for "Look" magazine in 1968, Fusco was commissioned to document all of the events surrounding the funeral. In addition to capturing the thousands of Americans who stood by the railroad tracks to greet the funeral train carrying Kennedy's coffin, he also photographed the mourners gathered at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York, as well as the dramatic night burial in Arlington National Cemetery. In this volume, newly discovered photographs are presented alongside classic images of the funeral train that have been seared into public consciousness from two previous iterations of the work: a 1999 limited edition and the 2000 trade edition, both long out-of-print. "Paul Fusco: RFK" provides a new perspective on this legendary photographer's singular achievement. It also helps solidify the status of this classic body of work as one of the great efforts in photographic reportage and an incomparable document of this pivotal moment in U.S. history. Paul Fusco, born in Leominster, Massachusetts in 1930 and a member of Magnum Photos since 1974, began his career photographing for the U.S. Signal Corps during the Korean War. He studied photojournalism at Ohio University and his work has been widely published and exhibited at venues including the Photographers' Gallery, London and the International Festival of Photojournalism, Perpignan, France. Senator Edward M. Kennedy, brother of Robert F. Kennedy, has served in the U.S. Senate since 1962. Norman Mailer (1923-2007) wrote more than 30 books, garnering the Pulitzer Prize twice. Evan Thomas is Editor at "Newsweek" and author of "Robert Kennedy: His Life." Vicki Goldberg is a leading voice in the field of photography criticism; her essay collection "Light Matters" was published by Aperture in 2005.

Wildflowers of the Western Plains

Stretching from western Texas and eastern New Mexico up through Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas, and into Canada, the vast western plains often appear sparse and dry to the casual observer. But a closer look, especially after spring rains, discerns flowers of all colors, sizes, shapes, and fragrances. These forgotten flowers, never before the main focus of a field guide, come into bloom in Wildflowers of the Western Plains. Organized by plant family, the guide presents 186 species of wildflowers, accompanied by vivid color photographs. Each entry includes both the Latin and the common names and a description of the plant, flower, fruit, and range. As a special feature, the guide includes Native American botanical folklore, legends pertaining to the wildflowers, and medicinal uses of native plants. The author's personal observations and occasional recipes round out this delightful array of information.

Picturing Indians

Ingram 出版
2008/07/29 出版

Little Reef and Other Stories announces the arrival of an original voice in literature. From Key West to Maine, Michael Carroll's debut collection of stories depicts the lives of characters who are no longer provincial but are not yet cosmopolitan. These women and their gay male friends are "B-listers" of a new, ironic, media-soaked culture. They live in a rich but increasingly divided America, a weirdly paradoxical country increasingly accepting of gay marriage but still marked by prejudice, religious strictures, and swaths of poverty and hopelessness. Carroll shows us people stunned by the shock of the now, who have forgotten their pasts and can't envision a future. Winner, Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction, American Academy of Arts and Letters Finalist, Gay Fiction, Lambda Literary Award Finalist, Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction, Publishing Triangle

Beyond the Dunes

Ingram 出版
2008/07/03 出版

The South Fork of Long Island extends only forty miles, stretching east into the Atlantic Ocean from the Shinnecock Canal to the majestic bluffs at Montauk Point. Dotting the coastline are the stylish Hamptons--Southampton, East Hampton, Westhampton Beach, and Bridgehampton--and villages of Sag Harbor, Amagansett, Watermill, and Sagaponack. The landscape in which these towns sit is unique in the United States. It is not one landscape but a collection of them--dune, farmland, woods, bays, swamps, ponds, marshes, pine barrens, and a high ridge, the moraine left by the glacier that long ago swept across the continent. All is bathed in an extraordinary silvery light that, at once warm and crisp, washes over both land and sea. Acclaimed photographer Jake Rajs has created a compelling portrait of the Hamptons, juxtaposing privet hedges and pumpkin fields, crashing surf and serene coves, fishermen and polo players, contemporary houses and modest shingled cottages. Most important, he has captured the light throughout the day, from misty dawn to the vivid colors of sunset.

Historic Photos of Brooklyn

Ingram 出版
2008/07/01 出版

Brooklyn, a magical name, both fantasy and enigma. Yet despite its reputation, Brooklyn consists of provincial, suburban neighborhoods, a small town. For over 300 years, Brooklyn suffered growing pains, but it also offered hospitality, jobs, and recreation, as the photographs in this volume show. Thus, millions crossed the East River and worked hard to build a city. Brooklyn's image grew and took hold: the sounds of the streets and factories, the heroism, the loyalty, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Brooklyn Dodgers. Historic Photos of Brooklyn shows how Brooklyn's pride has traveled from decade to decade, and with this continuity, how Brooklyn has matured, building farmhouses, frame houses, skyscrapers, classrooms, brownstones, libraries, mom-and-pop stores, department stores, restaurants, theaters, ships, elevated trains, and airplanes. Today's residents carry on a tradition started centuries ago, traditions that are highlighted in Historic Photos of Brooklyn.

The Somnambulists

Ingram 出版
2008/06/01 出版

The life or death mask is in many ways the sculptural analogue of the photographic portrait. Both suggest direct traces from life, involve positive and negative, and evoke a mysterious connection between a living, breathing subject and a captured image. The drive to capture true likenesses in the early 19th century was partly generated by the pseudo- science of phrenology. As a by-product of this, cast collections such as those of the Edinburgh Phrenological Society, have preserved haunting likenesses via life and death masks from individuals living 150 to over 200 years ago.Through her photographs Joanna Kane has taken these subjects out of the categories and hierarchies of their phrenological context. They no longer appear as disembodied scientific specimens, but as photographically embodied portraits of individual men and women - many of whom lived before the invention or popular use of photography. The title, The Somnambulists, is a reference to mesmerism and phreno-mesmerism, which were current at the time from which many of the casts originate from. The resulting portraits appear to exist in an ambiguous suspended state between life, death and sleep.

Divided into themed chapters such as Paintings, Sculpture, Tapestry and Needlework, French and English Furniture, European Pottery and Porcelain - 'Treasures' is suitable for those with little knowledge of art history and antiques as well as those more versed in the subjects. Special features illuminate the work of key painters, designers and craftsmen; historical timelines give a quick visual context for the artworks, and cross-referencing ensures that readers can see what else is held at that Trust property. The 'treasures' range from single pieces, such as Rubens' The Garden of Love at Waddesdon and St Michael Overcoming Satan by Flaxman at Ickworth, to collections of multiple pieces, such as the miniatures at Ham House and Petworth's 16th-century maiolica plates and teapots. Some have been chosen for their rare beauty and artistry, others for their value or history, but each will be illuminated for the reader. With sumptuous photography and authoritative text (written in conjunction with the Trust's renowned curators), 'Treasures of the National Trust' will prove an essential reference title on the best of British heritage.

Surveying Central British Columbia

Ingram 出版
2008/03/01 出版

Frank Swannell contributed greatly to the shape of British Columbia by surveying and mapping large portions of the province over three decades. He also took thousands of photographs and kept detailed journals of his travels. In his second book on Swannell's adventures, Jay Sherwood presents central BC through the eyes and words of one of BC's most famous surveyors. Swannell photographed First Peoples, settlers, various methods of transportation and the daily life of a surveying crew. Of about 1,500 photographs he took between 1920 and 1928, Jay Sherwood has selected the best for this book. Many have historical significance, showing the changes beginning to occur in this largely wilderness region of central BC. Surveying Central British Columbia is based primarily on Swannell's diaries and photographs. It is supplemented by interviews with descendants of some members of Swannell's surveying crew, research and the author's personal visits to several places where Swannell surveyed. It includes a database of Swannell's photographs online at the BC Archives.

Andrew D. Lytle’s Baton Rouge

Ingram 出版
2008/03/01 出版

Andrew David Lytle produced thousands of photographic images in the sixty years during which he lived in Baton Rouge and operated Lytle Studio. His heirs, alas, reportedly shattered his glass-plate negatives by dropping them down a dry well soon after his death, not realizing their value. Andrew D. Lytle's Baton Rouge preserves some of the only images that remain, a vintage treasure for contemporary viewers. These 120 photographs give entr矇e into life in Louisiana's capital city from the 1860s through the early 1900s. They compose the largest extant collection of photos created in a professional studio in nineteenth-century Baton Rouge. Together they capture the day-to-day existence of the community, fleeting moments of great importance, and long-term changes over time, revealing not only the perceptions of the photographer but also the self-perceptions of his subjects. In a superb introductory overview of the collection, Mark E. Martin recounts Lytle's life and career within the context of Baton Rouge history and culture, noting advances in camera and printing technologies. Martin then discusses the photographs thematically, beginning with Baton Rouge's occupation by Federal forces during the Civil War. Thousands of northern soldiers and sailors came through the city during that time, and Lytle, a native of Ohio, photographed them in his studio, on the riverfront, in camps, on boats and ships, and from a bird's-eye view atop buildings. This work brought Lytle fame fifty years later when select images were published in The Photographic History of the Civil War along with the claim that Lytle had been a secret agent, a "camera spy," for the Confederacy. Martin exposes the impossibility of this popular belief, which nonetheless persisted well into the twentieth century.Over the years Lytle Studio, which Andrew's son Howard eventually joined, produced commercial images of the Louisiana State Penitentiary, the forestry industry, railways and waterways, LSU sports teams, outdoor landscapes, and individuals. Andrew Lytle was more than a studio photographer, though. A husband, father, and grandfather, he took an active role in the community as an entrepreneur; volunteer firefighter, 'member of religious, social, and fraternal organizations; and participant in local theatrical productions and other entertainments. His photography provides in many cases the only visual record of the life and times of Baton Rouge and its people in that period.Much of what is depicted in Andrew D. Lytle's Baton Rouge remains central to the city's vitality today: politics, family, home, commerce and industry, social events, parades, LSU sports, and the riverfront (now with levees). Readers will find here a priceless glimpse at a bygone world, yet one still recognizable.

Helen Levitt

Power House 出版
2008/03/01 出版

"If ever anyone was born to be a photographer, Helen Levitt was. Looking at these pictures triggers that tingling feeling you get from photographs by artists like Lartigue, Kertesz, and Cartier-Bresson: a feeling that the camera is less an expertly operated tool than the seamless extension of a mind and body that are preternaturally alert to the world."-The New York Times "Levitt's photographs, like her city, though occasionally they rise to beauty, are mostly too quick for it. Instead, they have the quality of frozen street-corner conversation: she went out, saw something wonderful, came home to tell you all about it, and then, frustrated, said, 'You had to be there, ' and you realize, looking at the picture, that you were."-Adam Gopnik, The New Yorker Helen Levitt, the visual poet laureate of New York City, published her magnum opus Crosstown in 2001 to great acclaim. The book immediately sold out, never to be reprinted, making it a classic volume of street photography for the cognoscenti. Levitt went on to author two smaller volumes, Here and There and Slide Show, her first monograph exclusively featuring her little-known color work, which have garnered her accolades from around the globe. Most recently, she was named the 2008 recipient of the SPECTRUM International Prize for Photography of the Foundation of Lower Saxony, an honor previously bestowed on such luminaries as Robert Adams and Sophie Calle. Her final book: Helen Levitt, was released in conjunction with a retrospective exhibition at Germany's Sprengel Museum Hannover, the exhibit included her most iconic works, intermixed with never-before-seen color work. Combining seven decades of New York City street life with her seminal work in Mexico City, Helen Levitt's self-titled compilation features the master works of an incomparable career.

The nation faced Herculean tasks to strike back against the Imperial Japanese military that had attacked her. C. C. Lockwood's Atchafalaya

C C,Lockwood  著
Louisiana 出版
2007/09/01 出版

At nearly 1.4 million acres, the Atchafalaya Basin in south central Louisiana comprises America's largest swamp wilderness. Award-winning nature photographer C. C. Lockwood is the foremost chronicler of this natural treasure. What began as a curious side-trip in 1973 became a decades-long love affair, and for more than thirty years, Lockwood has explored the Atchafalaya's waters and captured its haunting beauty on film. Now, twenty-five years after the publication of his first book, he returns to his favorite subject in C. C. Lockwood's Atchafalaya. His passion for the Atchafalaya as expressed in his photographs can be compared to John James Audubon's exuberant appreciation for the state's abundant bird life as depicted in his prints more than 150 years ago. The art of both exalts Louisiana's wildlife -- and cautions against taking it for granted. Lockwood revisits and reflects on the places he has frequented most in the swamp, recalling his escapades both long past and recent among gators and skeeters. He shares the thoughts of basin residents about how the Atchafalaya has changed over time, for better and for worse. Increases and decreases in various bird and other animal populations, changes in water levels and consistency, flora mainstays and trees gone missing, burgeoning aquatic vegetation -- all are keenly observed by this explorer. Lockwood finds undiminished the seductive seasonal and diurnal moods of the swamp: autumn and spring, sunset and moonrise, as breathtaking now as in the past. In nearly one-hundred dazzling color photographs, Lockwood brilliantly documents the Atchafalaya's timeless beauty. He shows amazingly diverse and abundant wildlife, rookeries with thousands of egrets and herons, waters with billions of crawfish, and ridges with deer, squirrel, and woodcock. Waters run deep in Lockwood's soul, as evidenced in his intimate treatment of the meandering bayous fringed with bald cypress trees, the many glassy lakes reflecting vegetation into double images, and the mighty Atchafalaya River -- the lifeline of the swamp."No place in the world gives me such a feeling of peace as America's largest river basin swamp," writes Lockwood. In these pages, he pays homage to the queen of U.S. wetlands.

A Northern Cheyenne Album

Ingram 出版
2007/07/30 出版

Rare photographs document the lives of Cheyenne people during the early reservation years In 1878 the Northern Cheyennes left what is now Oklahoma, where they had been incarcerated, and began an epic journey back to their homeland. They suffered great losses, but a small group of survivors reached its destination in southeastern Montana in 1879 and eventually won the right to a reservation there. A Northern Cheyenne Album presents a rare series of never-before-published photographs that document the lives of tribal people on the reservation during the early twentieth century--a period of rapid change. Reservation physician and expert photographer Thomas B. Marquis captured Northern Cheyenne life in numerous images taken from 1926 to 1935. After 1960, former tribal president John Woodenlegs and others interviewed tribal elders and, drawing on tape recordings, composed the photos' lively captions. Margot Liberty, editor of this volume, has added her own descriptions, filling in details of Northern Cheyenne culture and history from a scholar's viewpoint. A valuable record of an all-but-forgotten generation, this volume is also an inspiring tribute to the Northern Cheyenne elders whose resilience and adaptability helped ensure the future of their people.

"Early Recordings" presents the first comprehensive look at the work of the respected, conceptually driven artist, Marco Breuer. Boldly experimental, Breuer uses an extensive and continually evolving range of processes to extract abstract and visually compelling images from photographic paper. Whether it involves placing burning coals on the photographic paper, repeatedly slicing into it or sanding away at the emulsion until holes appear, Breuer's work eviscerates the usual expectations of the camera-less image. The Minimalistic end results are surprisingly exquisite, and this oversized volume reproduces them with attention to every slice, abrasion and color shift. The images function as "recordings" of the artist's actions, so that only the trace of impact and Breuer's expended energy remain. The revered photography critic Vince Aletti describes Breuer's work as having "the intelligence and wit of the midcentury Modernist avant-garde and the anything-goes audacity of photography's earliest innovators." A limited edition of 30 copies of this book is also available, slip-cased and hand-altered by the artist.

The Photographer's Eye

Szarkowski-  著
Museum of 出版
2007/03/01 出版

A bestselling and indispensable introduction to the visual language of photography, from the legendary MoMA director and curator John SzarkowskiThe Photographer's Eye by John Szarkowski is a twentieth-century classic--an indispensable introduction to the visual language of photography. Based on a landmark exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in 1964, and originally published in 1966, the book has long been out of print. It is now available again to a new generation of photographers and lovers of photography in this duotone printing that closely follows the original. Szarkowski's compact text eloquently complements skillfully selected and sequenced groupings of 172 photographs drawn from the entire history and range of the medium. Celebrated works by such masters as Cartier-Bresson, Evans, Steichen, Strand, and Weston are juxtaposed with vernacular documents and even amateur snapshots to analyze the fundamental challenges and opportunities that all photographers have faced. Szarkowski, the legendary curator who worked at the Museum from 1962 to 1991, has published many influential books. But none more radically and succinctly demonstrates why--as U.S. News & World Report put it in 1990--"whether Americans know it or not," his thinking about photography "has become our thinking about photography."

Desert America

Ingram 出版
2006/12/30 出版

The desert is a huge paradox. Beneath its outward appearance of immensity and silence, are the sounds of various experiments, mysteries, and utopias. The setting of outrageous true histories, entertainment oases founded on consumerism and play, and the secret staging of military power, the desert is far from empty. Instead, it is full of activity: unexpected, uninhibited, and excessive. Not subject to barriers and seemingly free of the formal, ideological or cultural ties of global society, the desert cultivates alternate architectures, urbanisms, and built phenomena. Through photographs, essays, and history, this book emerges as an exploration of some of these phenomena and the protagonists that made them possible.

Havana

Steidl / 出版
2006/11/15 出版

Photographer David Bailey has said, self-deprecatingly, that Havana "is just a superficial look, not a soul-searching investigation, a quick impression of a place that is unique in its geographical position." But he reveals the importance of that quick impression and the depth of his understanding when he describes Havana's "unique position"--with surreal accuracy--as "much closer to the United States of America than the space station is." Both are places ordinary Americans cannot visit. To be one of the poorest nations on Earth, almost within spitting distance of the richest makes the poverty of Cuba seem more extreme. Two countries with extreme ideologies; the small one proving that Communism does not work, the other proving that democratic paranoia does work if the power and the money are in place. Havana makes use of Bailey's mastery of the full range of the medium's many genres, from vibrant street reportage to crystalline portraiture. This is Havana as an icon of one of the most distinct and revealing cultural divides left in a world hurtling toward homogeneity, Havana as seen by a master at the height of his craft. Bound in an embossed leather cover.

Real Photo Postcard Guide

Robert,Bogdan  著 、Weseloh, Todd  著
Syracuse 出版
2006/09/30 出版

The Real Photo Postcard Guide is an informative, comprehensive, and practical treatment of this wildly popular American phenomenon that dominated the United States photographic market during the first third of the twentieth century. Robert Bogdan and Todd Weseloh draw on extensive research and observation to address all aspects of the photo postcard from its history, origin, and cultural significance to practical matters like dating, purchasing, condition, and preservation. Illustrated with over 350 exceptional photo postcards taken from archives and private collections across the country, the scope of the Real Photo Postcard Guide spans technical considerations of production, characteristics of superior images, collecting categories, and methods of research for dating photo postcards and investigating their photographers. In a broader sense, the authors show how "real photo postcards" document the social history of America. From family outings and workplace awards to lynchings and natural disasters, every image captures a moment of American cultural history from the society that generated them. Bogdan and Weseloh's book provides an admirable integration of informative text and compelling photographic illustrations. Collectors, archivists, photographers, photo historians, social scientists, and anyone interested in the visual documentation of America will find the Real Photo Postcard Guide indispensable.

Cuba By Korda

If you don't know his name, you know his photograph--Che staring into the distance like a prophet--that has been reproduced on millions of T-shirts and posters around the world.Korda always said he didn't mind its use on the ubiquitous revolutionary paraphernalia but finally drew the line in the 1990s when Smirnoff used it for a vodka commercial, which he considered "disrespectful".Alberto Korda was born Alberto D穩az Guti矇rrez in Havana, 1928--the same year as Ernesto Che Guevara. Their fates were to be entwined as Korda's portrait of the Argentine became his most famous photograph. Korda was Cuba's best known photographer of the revolutionary period. He died in Paris in 2001.This book, originally published in France, gives an overview of Korda's extraordinary camerawork, from his first work as a fashion photographer to "The Quixote of the Lamp Post" - a Cuban peasant sitting on a lamp post above a sea of people during a mass rally. It includes other somewhat quirky and less well-known photographs, such as Castro warily eyeing a tiger at the Bronx zoo and Che Guevara playing golf. The proof strip of the roll of film from which the famous shot of Che was taken is also reproduced, including Korda's photos of Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir who were visiting Cuba which were published at the time, not the photo of Che! Korda liked the photo and stuck it on his wall until an Italian journalist spotted it and took it home.
