Bohemian San Francisco - Its Restaurants and Their Most Famous Recipes
San Franciscans, both residential and transient, are a pleasure-loving people, and dining out is a distinctive feature of their pleasure. With hundreds of restaurants to select from, each specializing on some particular dish, or some peculiar mode of preparation, one often becomes bewildered and turns to familiar names on the menu card rather than venture into fields that are new, of strange and rare dishes whose unpronounceable names of themselves frequently are sufficient to discourage those unaccustomed to the art and science of cooking practiced by those whose lives have been spent devising means of tickling fastidious palates of a city of gourmets. In order that those who come within our gates, and many others who have resided here in blindness for years, may know where to go and what to eat, and that they may carry away with them a knowledge of how to prepare some of the dishes pleasing to the taste and nourishing to the body, that have spread San Francisco's fame over the world, we have decided to set down the result of our experience and study of our Bohemian population and their ways, and also tell where to find and how to order the best special dishes.

Appalachia on the Table
When her mother passed along a cookbook made and assembled by her grandmother, Erica Abrams Locklear thought she knew what to expect. But rather than finding a homemade cookbook full of apple stack cake, leather britches, pickled watermelon, or other "traditional" mountain recipes, Locklear discovered recipes for devil's food cake with coconut icing, grape catsup, and fig pickles. Some recipes even relied on food products like Bisquick, Swans Down flour, and Calumet baking powder. Where, Locklear wondered, did her Appalachian food script come from? And what implicit judgments had she made about her grandmother based on the foods she imagined she would have been interested in cooking? Appalachia on the Table argues, in part, that since the conception of Appalachia as a distinctly different region from the rest of the South and the United States, the foods associated with the region and its people have often been used to socially categorize and stigmatize mountain people. Rather than investigate the actual foods consumed in Appalachia, Locklear instead focuses on the representations of foods consumed, implied moral judgments about those foods, and how those judgments shape reader perceptions of those depicted. The question at the core of Locklear's analysis asks, How did the dominant culinary narrative of the region come into existence and what consequences has that narrative had for people in the mountains?

The True Natives of Cape Cod Massachusetts and their Food Ways
The recipes tell the story of America from the beginning, when the author's ancestors, the People of the First Light, who walked the land now known as Cape Cod and its islands over 10,000 years ago, encountered the English settlers. The author presents stories of her ancestors of the Portuguese Diaspora and Seychelle Islands, driven by the whaling industry to the shores of New Bedford and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The recipes are a map of historical events that formulated the beginning of this nation from the Native American perspective. The recipes are used as a metaphor to examine the author's own cultural and ethnic identity and personal journey. The author tells the story of Mashpee, one of the last and largest declared Indian districts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, later incorporated into a town in 1870. Chicamacomico Cookery, Volume Two, Facsimile Edition
A two-volume charity cookbook like this is a rarity. The best guess is that there have been "hundreds of thousands" of community and charity cookbooks (CCBs in the parlance of historians who study them) published in the United States since the first one -- The Poetical Cookbook -- in 1864. Since they have been small, local efforts in practically every town and hamlet in the U.S. for 150 years, nobody has really collected them all or counted them. Some, no doubt, have had multiple printings, but an entirely new edition, with a changed set of recipes would be hard to find.Chicamacomico Cookery, Volume Two, is a phenomenon for more than its "rare sequel" status. It documents local history and the people who made that history. It was published by volunteers in the Chicamacomico Banks Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary about 10 years after an earlier group put together Volume One. Only seven contributors to Volume One (1970-1973) were listed among the 84 contributors to Volume Two (1980-1983). Volume One seemed to contain largely local recipes - many for the fish and shellfish that were caught locally. In Volume Two, though, the recipes that the Outer Banks cooks submitted included many from outside sources -- different regions and places on the Earth far from "the Banks."Also, the women who contributed to Volume Two were more inclined to use their own names rather than "Mrs." and their husband's name as they did in Volume One. The Banks clearly had seen the effects of the women's movement of that era.The two volumes are full of recipes that obviously were important to families in a tiny community, on a historic barrier island, in one of the most storm-swept places in the United States. They are unique and they deserve to be preserved. We hope that these facsimile editions will help keep alive the memories of the people and the recipes and a little bit of the history of Waves, Rodanthe and Salvo, North Carolina - a place that was once called Chicamacomico.

Sustenance for the Body & Soul
The food-secure and/or privileged worldwide no longer eat and drink simply to maintain life itself. They have the advantage and choice to regard "sustenance" not just as fuel for the body/machine but as a source of pleasure and entertainment for the mind/intellect. This enhanced concept of "sustenance" embraces all the senses: visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory and tactile, thus including not just food & drink but ceremonies & art forms dealing with them. This book explores the substantive ways food & drink impact human existence. The work comprises five parts: medicine; ceremonies; literature & cinema; art & artists; space/architecture & advertising/art. Food & drink start with the physical, morph into nutrition, the most basic requirements for organic life, but progress from the beginning of physical process to ceremony and expression. The result and the experience highlight physiological and sensual concepts, and indeed, preference. Food & drink staples are determined by geographic availability and cuisine & beverage are closely associated with culture & ethnicity. Contributor exploration is wide-ranging: Aztec, Mexican & Spanish medicine; African & Roman Catholic rites; cookbook discourse and socio-gender influence; literature, including cultural comparisons of cooking and cooks; preparation & representation of food & drink as artistic endeavours, including by Latin American women, and types of inspirational "fodder", especially in the context of Picasso's art in Spain & France, & Spanish wine museums & labelling. Sustenance for the Body & Soul is the seventh book in the Hispanic Worlds series, details of which are available on the press website.
Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking
Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine is the typical and traditional fare of the Pennsylvania Dutch. According to one writer, "If you had to make a short list of regions in the United States where regional food is actually consumed on a daily basis, the land of the Pennsylvania Dutch-in and around Lancaster County, Pennsylvania-would be at or near the top of that list," mainly because the area is a cultural enclave of Pennsylvania Dutch culture. Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine reflects influences of the Pennsylvania Dutch's German heritage, agrarian society, and rejection of rapid change. It is common to find Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine throughout the Philadelphia/Delaware Valley region.
A Thousand Ways To Please a Husband
This charming vintage cookbook, with its innocently suggestive title, reads like a novel as it follows the fictional lives of a pair of newlyweds. Join Bettina and Bob as they eat their way through their first year of marriage, from the bride's first real dinner and a Sunday evening tea to baking day, a rainy night meal, and Thanksgiving festivities. Menus for all occasions are seasoned with anecdotes about family life, friendships, household hints, and budgetary concerns. Originally published in 1917, this volume offers a delightful look at homemaking before the advent of sophisticated appliances and fast food as well as the modern reality of women's work outside the home. Unintentionally funny and historically revealing, the whimsically illustrated narrative abounds in simple and surprisingly relevant recipes.
