The Book of Difficult Fruit
"[A] glorious mash-up of memoir, love note, and cookbook . . . Every sentence is as sensuous as the first bite into a cold, juicy plum." --Hillary Kelly, Vulture "[A] dazzling, thorny new essay collection." --Samin Nosrat, The New York Times Inspired by twenty-six fruits, the essayist, poet, and pie lady Kate Lebo expertly blends natural, culinary, medical, and personal history. A is for aronia, berry member of the apple family, clothes-stainer, superfruit with reputed healing power. D is for durian, endowed with a dramatic rind and a shifting odor--peaches, old garlic. M is for medlar, name-checked by Shakespeare for its crude shape, beloved by gardeners for its flowers. Q is for quince, which, when fresh, gives off the scent of "roses and citrus and rich women's perfume," but if eaten raw is so astringent it wicks the juice from one's mouth. In a work of unique invention, these and other difficult fruits serve as the central ingredients of twenty-six lyrical essays (with recipes). What makes a fruit difficult? Its cultivation, its harvest, its preparation, the brevity of its moment for ripeness, its tendency toward rot or poison, the way it might overrun your garden. Here, these fruits will take you on unexpected turns and give sideways insights into relationships, self-care, land stewardship, medical and botanical history, and so much more. What if the primary way you show love is through baking, but your partner suffers from celiac disease? Why leave in the pits for Willa Cather's plum jam? How can we rely on bodies as fragile as the fruits that nourish them? Kate Lebo's unquenchable curiosity promises adventure: intimate, sensuous, ranging, bitter, challenging, rotten, ripe. After reading The Book of Difficult Fruit, you will never think of sweetness the same way again.

Dinner at a Queen's Table
It's time to bring families back to their dinner tables. Columbia University studied families who planned, prepared, and ate dinner at home. They concluded that when families ate together, children formed better relationships with their parents and teens between sixteen and eighteen who ate at least five times a week with their family were significantly less likely to get involved in drugs, did better in school, and formed stronger friendships (CASAColumbia 2012). Dinner at a Queen's Table shares recipes that will help you prepare delicious healthy food and bring your family back to the table. As a health educator and cooking school instructor, Etta Collins has learned that people want to start at a place of familiarity. These transitional recipes, written with the beginner in mind, will help your taste buds adapt to new ways of eating. Each recipe has nutritional facts that illustrate low-fat, low-salt, low-sugar, and without cholesterol or trans-fats. Etta includes "My Seven Favorite Menus" to show how easy it is to get started. Also included is "Additional Tips for Maintaining Good Health" to help complete the picture of healthy living. To Eat or Not to Eat Meat
Increasingly, people are shifting to vegetarian, plant-based, or vegan diets. This shift is having profound effects on our social interactions, and this is the focus of this book. Becoming a vegetarian or vegan involves more than just changing your diet. It can change how you socially and emotionally connect with family, friends and the broader community, shape your outlook on life, and open up new worlds and contacts. It can also lead to uncomfortable situations, if dietary choices involving a rejection of meat are read by others as an ethical and moral judgement on mainstream dietary choices. This book adopts an innovative narrative approach, and draws on stories across the globe to consider how the food choices we make in our everyday lives can lead to complex, and sometimes life changing, social consequences. The narratives cover a range of topics, including the moral reasons behind some individuals' decision to change their diets, the religious or ecological considerations, and the potential health and social ramifications. To date, the social consequences of selecting a plant-based diet have been sorely overlooked in favour of texts that have documented the benefits of such diets, and usually focus on health, animal welfare and/or environmental issues, with the aim of persuading readers to give up meat, and change to a 'healthy' and/or 'sustainable' diet. Cultural studies texts considering vegetarianism or veganism have typically targeted academic audiences with analyses of how identity is constructed through food and dietary choices. In contrast, this book offers a unique window onto how our social lives are implicated in our food choices, and is critical in understanding the importance of diet as embedded in complex social processes.

The Golden Age Cook Book
A vegetarian cook book, first published in 1898.PREFACEI send this little book out into the world, first, to aid those who, having decided to adopt a bloodless diet, are still asking how they can be nourished without flesh; second, in the hope of gaining something further to protect "the speechless ones" who, having come down through the centuries under "the dominion of man," have in their eyes the mute, appealing look of the helpless and oppressed. Their eloquent silence should not ask our sympathy and aid in vain; they have a right, as our humble brothers, to our loving care and protection, and to demand justice and pity at our hands; and, as a part of the One Life, to-"life, which all can take but none can give;Life, which all creatures love and strive to keep;Wonderful, dear, and pleasant unto each, Even to the meanest; yea, a boon to allWhere pity is, for pity makes the worldSoft to the weak and noble for the strong.Unto the dumb lips of the flock he lentSad, pleading words, showing how man, who praysFor mercy to the gods, is merciless, Being as god to those; albeit all lifeIs linked and kin, and what we slay have givenMeek tribute of their milk and wool, and setFast trust upon the hands which murder them."If the cruelty and injustice to animals are nothing to us, we have still another argument to offer-the brutalization of the men who slaughter that we may eat flesh.

Downshiftology Healthy Meal Prep
IACP AWARD FINALIST - Discover an easier, more balanced way to meal prep as you whip up 100 fresh and healthy dishes that happen to be gluten-free, from the creator of the popular blog and YouTube channel Downshiftology. "Lisa has revolutionized meal prep to be approachable, fresh, and easy, and her cookbook has everything you need to make healthy eating a breeze."--Emily Mariko, TikTok creator Before Lisa Bryan began meal prepping several years ago as a way to save time and money, she quickly became tired of eating boring leftovers and wasting food. At the same time, she also wanted to "downshift" the too-fast pace of her life. So she flipped the script on meal prep by focusing on individual ingredients. By prepping a handful of healthy ingredients at the start of the week, she learned that she could enjoy a variety of meals and snacks without getting bored. And she found she could control what she ate with more clarity: It became easy to eat more vegetables and simple proteins, eliminate processed foods and gluten (to manage her celiac disease), and reduce refined sugar. Her debut cookbook is packed with 100+ simple and ingenious big-batch recipes that can either be frozen or repurposed into totally different, delicious meals. A dinner of Coconut Chickpea Curry with rice can be enjoyed the next day as a tostada at lunch, and a side of peas and crispy prosciutto becomes breakfast when you add a jammy egg on top. The recipes are all free of refined sugar, many are naturally anti-inflammatory, and dairy is minimal and optional. Lisa's approachable method for eating well and preparing meals with ease will inspire home cooks to downshift their lives, too, by making healthy meals without a fuss.
Pumpkin Companion
Pumpkins have been a part of American life for a long time. From Halloween to pumpkin pie everyone knows something about them, but there is more, much more.Pumpkins have an unusual if not a mysterious past. Paddock's introduction. Although these facts are inconclusive, the recipes prepared by Elizabeth Brabb are certain. From pumpkin pie to cream of pumpkin soup, each recipe is as scrumptious as the aroma of butternut squash on a cool, autumn day. Elizabeth presents a wide assortment of pumpkin favorites and some unlikely meals such as pumpkin ice cream and chocolate covered pumpkins. You'll know what I mean after you've had a chance to read the book.

Pipers Farm Sustainable Meat Cookbook
How to eat 'less but better' sustainably produced meat via a seasonal flow, in harmony with nature and regenerative farming principles This book is an aria for proper meat. Meat as it was before it got messed with. Before animals became a unit of production, but were reared to produce excellent food, and were willingly given an equally excellent life. It explores the connection between nature and farming and the result is a mixture of hands-in-the-earth farm stories and meat-first carcass balanced seasonal recipes. Meat is revered and stretched as far as we can make it go by respecting the animal and using every part, cheek to lard, tendon to tail. The recipes are not just meat and two veg, but provide cooking that is devised for the way we live today. Think a modernized version of warming farmhouse food, to suit the weather and our homes. Fast, fresh, surprising dishes for midweek, and slow-cooking or theater pieces shared with friends for weekends and holidays. Far from countering the vegan spike, this is the definition of fair, honest, sustainable food. This is meat done right.

The Roasting and Grilling Cookbook
INTRODUCTION Welcome to the BBQ cookbook! You're about to embark upon an adventure that is not only fun, but maybe even a little addicting. One thing's for sure, though: It's delicious! You're new to grilling? You're afraid to light a barbecue? Well, have no fear. It's not as complicated as it looks. This book has got some recipes ready to go and some even call for indoor grilling! What is BBQ? Barbecue originated from the Caribbean word 'barbacoa', which is a native Indian structure used for smoking meats. It's important to note that grilling and barbecuing are two different concepts. While grilling uses high and direct heat for quick cooks (think burgers, hot dogs, and steak), Barbecuing, on the other hand, requires indirect, consistent, low heat and longer cook times. Barbecuing also uses different types of smoke wood for an additional layer of flavour on top of the charcoal smoke. Meat used for BBQ is also tends to have a higher fat content, which provides tenderization and flavour over a long cooking time. Tips to get you started: To avoid losing juices during turning, always flip your meat or vegetables using tongs or a spatula. Don't press down anything with a spatula while they're grilling! This squeezes out the juices. For great smoky flavour, soak some wood chips in water. To infuse grilled foods with herb essence, toss herbs directly onto the charcoal while you're grilling.
