Spilled: Stories & Recipes from Natural Winemakers
The popularity of natural wine has taken the food and wine world by storm, and this book takes readers on an insider's tour of the wineries, and into the farmhouse kitchens, of the most important and influential natural winemakers of our time. An important parallel to the slow food and farm-to-table movements, natural wine follows the principles of permaculture and organic agriculture. Celebrated as an alternative to industrialized wine making, natural wine is produced with minimal intervention, allowing the unique taste of the grapes, and the land on which they're grown, to shine. This book profiles the stars of the natural wine world, providing the reader with an insider's view of how they create their wines. The authors bring readers into their culture, giving an authentic look into the winemakers' techniques and creativity, as well as to their tables for the home cooked meals they like to make after a long day working in the vineyard. The book also explores the most important winemaking regions of France and Italy, explaining the characteristics of each before diving into the wines of the individual producers. With artful photos showing the process behind some of the best wines being made today, favorite recipes from each of the winemakers reflecting the food culture, and knowledgeable essays explaining the winemaking techniques, this is must-have book for anyone who loves wine.

A must-read for wine lovers: In this updated edition, acclaimed California vintner Tor Kenward shares shares a lifetime of great wines, famous friends, deep knowledge, and insider insights. Forewords by Robert M. Parker Jr. and Thomas Keller New afterword by Karen MacNeil Reflections of a Vintner recounts the lessons learned, relationships forged, and observations made from an insider's nearly fifty-year journey through the burgeoning wine industry in Napa Valley. From the mid-seventies, when there were less than fifty wineries, to the present, with over eight hundred, Tor Kenward shares his recollections as the region became a world-class wine destination. Following the calendar year, each chapter opens with the challenges and opportunities a winemaker faces that month--in the vineyard, winery, tasting room, and out on the road. In addition to the wine knowledge Kenward imparts, the vintner shares stories of his friendships with legends of the modern American food and wine scene, including Julia Child, Andr矇 Tchelistcheff, Andy Beckstoffer, and Robert Mondavi, among others. Kenward's hard work as a vintner was recently acknowledged and celebrated. In the October 2021 Judgment of Napa, held forty-five years after the historic Judgement of Paris, TOR Cabernet was judged to be #1, outscoring legendary Bordeaux ch璽teaux and Napa Valley and international peers by leading critics and sommeliers. TOR wines, coveted by connoisseurs worldwide, have earned over twenty 100-point scores, and still counting. An iconic winemaker, Kenward has written, taught, and lectured on wine most of his adult life. What he is most often asked about are not facts or numbers about his wines, but the stories behind them. These are stories of inspiration and wisdom that shaped his journey. With Kenward's impressive connection to Napa Valley and his legacy of creating inimitable wines, Reflections of a Vintner offers entertaining insights into an often intimidating and complex but highly enjoyable world. Includes black-and-white illustrations
Methods in Ancient Wine Archaeology
Bringing together a wide array of modern scientific techniques and interdisciplinary approaches, this book provides an accessible guide to the methods that form the current bedrock of research into Roman, and more broadly ancient, wine. Chapters are arranged into thematic sections, covering biomolecular archaeology and chemical analysis, archaeobotany and palynology, vineyard and landscape archaeology and computational and experimental archaeology. These include discussions of some of the most recent techniques, such as ancient DNA and organic residue analyses, geophysical prospection, multispectral imaging and spatial and climatic modelling. While most of the content is of direct relevance to the Roman Mediterranean, the assortment of detailed case studies, methodological outlines and broader 'state of the field' reflections is of equal use to researchers working across disparate disciplines, geographies, and chronologies. The study of ancient Roman wine has been dominated until recently by traditional archaeological analyses focused upon production facilities and ceramic evidence related to transport. While such architecture and artefact-focussed approaches provide a fundamental foundation for our understanding of this topic, they fail to provide the requisite nuance to answer other questions regarding grape cultivation and wine production, consumption, use and trade. As the first compendium of its kind, this book supports the embedding of modern scientific and experimental techniques into archaeological fieldwork, research and laboratory analysis, pushing the boundaries of what questions can be explored, and serving as a launching point for future avenues of interdisciplinary research.

Getting Shitfaced & Living To Write About It
James Joyce drank. So did Raymond Chandler, John Cheever, Dylan Thomas, and Dorothy Parker. Legend says Ernest Hemingway loved his Mojitos, and Jack Kerouac dug the Margarita. Edgar Allan Poe heard cognac and brandy eggnogs rapping, rapping at his chamber door long before he wrote his famous poem. Despite writing The Rum Diary, Hunter S. Thompson preferred Mojitos, beer and Chartreuse. The poet Charles Bukowski was a guy who loved his boilermakers, as any self-respecting Barfly would or should. Why do so many famous writers drink? I have no idea. This book is not about famous writers and their drinking habits; it is about an unfamous writer and his drinking habits. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, while my friends were drinking cheap canned beer, I was enjoying whiskey sours and old fashioned cocktails. That love of the classic cocktail has never gone away. Getting Shitfaced & Living to Write About It is a collection of what I've learned about alcohol as a home bartender over the years. It has recipes for the classics I love to serve as well as original cocktails I've created or modified. And there is a generous helping of booze and cocktail trivia. Originally written in the summer of 2019 as a gag gift for friends, Getting Shitfaced & Living To Write About It was well received and will now be available in a print on demand and eBook edition.

The Look of Wine

Throughout The Look of Wine, readers will meet winegrowers, oenologists, sommeliers, and scientists to weave a canvas of universal words representing the chromatic palette of wines. Alongside this descriptive vocabulary, original photography captures the authenticity of color while leaving room for interpretation. Each family of color is visually represented by a wine, with a description of its hues and the natural and human processes that contributed to creating it. Neither a directory of the colors of wine nor a technical encyclopedia, The Look of Wine is a living tribute to oenology's chromatic diversity, with a focus on still, unmutated whites and reds, as well as ros矇s.

Spirited Women
Alcohol and spirits have long been thought of as a male-dominated field, but the truth is that women have been serving it up for centuries. (Literally--the first distilling technology is believed to have been invented by a woman in 100 CE.) Today, many women are shaking up the industry, from distillers and blenders to bar owners and spirits educators. In this fun, feminist, vividly illustrated book, bar professional Sammi Katz and illustrator Olivia McGiff celebrate the spirit and spirits of 55 of these groundbreaking women with profiles and recipes, in three areas of the industry: Makers (women who are directly involved in the development and production of spirits); Shakers (mixologists and bar owners); and Trailblazers (women who have influenced the spirits world in other ways, such as historians, authors, and entrepreneurs). Each profile is paired with a cocktail recipe that highlights each woman's story, including the Title IX (a favorite at Portland's female-owned sports bar The Sports Bra); Casual Brilliance (a take on a Sazerac, inspired by a whisky distiller in Australia); and Le Donne (which features an amaro revived from near extinction by a family of Italian women). This colorful book of unsung heroines joyfully raises a glass to the dame and the dram!
