Effect of Pelvic Floor Exercises in Chronic Low Back Pain Patients
The pelvic floor is an important component of the core stabilizing muscles, but many physical therapists and patients with low back pain neglect to train pelvic floor muscles. In addition, there is little evidence that combined routine treatment (Ultrasound or short wave diathermy and lumbar strengthening exercises) and pelvic floor muscle exercise offers any advantage over routine treatment alone. PFM have also an important role in proper muscular activation for lumbar stabilization. However, there is very little evidence was yet found to assess the function of PFM in patients with LBP or to evaluate the effect of PFM exercises in the treatment of such patients. Those studies investigating the function of PFM in healthy subjects or in incontinent women suffered from some methodological flaws such as small sample size, heterogeneous sample, lack of a standardized and valid procedure, lack of a defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, testing different muscles at different positions, etc. Hence the need for present study is to find out whether PFM exercises have any additive effect when given along with the conventional regimen in treatment of patients with chronic LBP.

Surgical treatment of atheromatous carotid stenosis
Atherosclerotic stenosis of the internal carotid artery is a frequent and serious condition, with a high risk of ischemic neurological events homolateral to the stenosis, which are often severe. Indications for surgery depend on two key factors: the degree of stenosis, and whether it is symptomatic or asymptomatic. These indications are now well codified, thanks to major randomized trials which have demonstrated the vital role of surgical treatment in improving the prognosis of carotid stenosis, taking into account the cumulative morbidity-mortality rate (CMMR) of the surgical team.Despite recent advances in interventional catheterization, which have attempted to introduce percutaneous angioplasty with or without stent into the therapeutic armamentarium of carotid atheromatosis, carotid endarterectomy remains the reference method for the treatment of atheromatous carotid stenoses.

A Pragmatic Approach to Conceptualization of Health and Disease
Surgery for digestive neuroendocrine neoplasia
Surgery, the only curative treatment for well-differentiated localized neuroendocrine tumors, plays a major role in therapeutic strategy. It also has a place in metastatic forms. Whenever possible, surgery for liver metastases is recommended. This excision must be as complete as possible, at an acceptable operative risk. It must be supported by other complementary techniques: Preoperative embolization, radiofrequency. Two-stage hepatectomies can treat all metastases.Hormone therapy with somatostatin analogues is of great importance for symptom control; particular caution must be exercised both before and during surgery. A multidisciplinary approach is essential to provide personalized therapy for patients with NNE. Clinical research and specialization in this field should be further encouraged.
Angiogenesis: Biology and Pathology
The growth of new blood vessels plays an important role in normal development and cancer progression. This new edition updates our understanding of the processes involved New blood vessels arise through a process known as angiogenesis, in which endothelial cells proliferate and sprout to form new vessels. Angiogenesis is vital for embryonic development, patterning of the vascular system, and wound healing. Vascular dysfunction contributes to a host of pathological conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and lymphedema. Written and edited by experts in the field, this new collection from Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Medicine provides an overview of recent progress in our understanding of the causal mechanisms essential for angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis in normal physiology and disease. The contributors review how the behavior of endothelial cells is controlled and discuss the regulatory roles of signaling molecules such as vascular endothelial growth factor, Notch, Wnt, VE-cadherin, and epsins. Vascular inflammation, immune cell trafficking, lipid metabolism, microRNAs, and the microbiome are also covered in the context of homeostasis and vasculature-related pathological conditions. Including discussions of vascular permeability and lymphatic drainage as well as interactions between the vascular system and smooth muscle cells, the blood-brain barrier, and the immune system, this volume is a vital reference for developmental and vascular biologists as well as anyone seeking to understand the biology and pathology underlying vasculature-dependent diseases.

Genetic Crisis Syndrome
The genetic crisis syndrome (GCS) is a concept that describes a pathophysiological event related to genetic changes in the microbiota, ultimately leading to adverse effects on the host. This syndrome first began to come into focus when genetically modified (GM) crops emerged. Transgenic technologies were developed to modify plant genomes with resistance to pests, herbicides, fungi, viruses, and tolerance to drought and soil salinity. Plant genomes have been modified by the introduction of genes with resistance to pests to prevent the use of chemical pesticides, resulting in more environmentally friendly agriculture. Many microbes were genetically modified with anti-pest and anti-fungicide genes that could prevent pest invasion, but the controversy about GM foods never dispirited.
The Limits of Statins
Heart disease remains a leading cause of mortality worldwide, and within this category, valvular heart disease (VHD) presents a significant challenge. While statins have revolutionized cholesterol management and reduced the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), their impact on VHD is limited. This article explores the limitations of statins in treating VHD and delves into alternative treatment options offering a more comprehensive approach to managing this condition. Understanding Valvular Heart Disease VHD encompasses a spectrum of conditions affecting the heart's valves, compromising their ability to function properly. These valves ensure unidirectional blood flow within the heart chambers and prevent backflow. When a valve narrows (stenosis), leaks (regurgitation), or fails to close completely (prolapse), blood flow is disrupted, leading to various complications.

How it's treated. In other words, on the one hand, what are the effects of the terrain on diabetes, and vice-versa? on the other, how to deal with the physiology of the terrain and the complexity of diabetes itself, in terms of the choice of molecules to prescribe and how to monitor treatment for optimal management.
Response of embryonic, maternal liver mitochondrial membranes
The effect of pesticides on the embryo depends on the dose, duration of drug administration, and gestational age. However, such important issues as the functioning of membrane-bound enzymes of mitochondria of differentiating tissues under the action of pesticides are insufficiently studied. In connection with the above stated, it is of undoubted interest to find out the state of oxidative phosphorylation, activity of some polyenzyme systems, phospholipid composition and some other properties of mitochondrial membranes of liver mitochondria of embryos, maternal organism and placenta under the action of pesticides.
Efficacy of Acupuncture in Carpal Canal Syndrome
Carpal Canal Syndrome is a peripheral neuropathy, the etiology of which is compression of the median nerve, located in the wrist region. This compression results in a set of symptoms, including pain, numbness, tingling, reduced grip strength, among others. This pathology of the hand, which can be unilateral or bilateral, significantly affects the quality of life of individuals, due to the associated limitations in carrying out activities of daily living. By promoting the circulation of energy and blood in the body, acupuncture helps restore the balance between energy and matter, providing relief from the symptoms mentioned above. This study, which is intended to be a research protocol presented in the form of a case study, reinforces the importance of using acupuncture to control certain symptoms, particularly pain. The results obtained seem to reinforce the premise that acupuncture can be an effective alternative for controlling the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Principles of Medical Care in Neurology Units and Neurological
In general, the peripheral nervous system can be considered the communication path between the central nervous system (CNS), the internal and external environment of the body. Peripheral nerves have three categories of nerve fibers, which include the following: Sensory;Movement;Mixed. In total, the peripheral nervous system can be considered 12 pairs of nerves leaving the brain and 31 pairs of spinal nerves. Those peripheral nerves that transmit information and data to the central nervous system are called sensory or afferent nerves, and those peripheral nerves that send commands from the brain and spinal cord to functional organs are called motor or efferent nerves.
Maternal and Child Health
In 2008, the municipality did not meet the target for investigating infant deaths and deaths of women of childbearing age. In 2010/2011 the municipality made progress in relation to the proposed targets. During this period there was a reduction in infant, neonatal and post-neonatal mortality. The proportion of maternal deaths investigated increased. There was a predominance of mothers aged between 20 and 30 (57.14%), with 8 to 11 years of schooling (60%), single (62.86%) and housewives (48.57%). Among the indicators of infant deaths, there was a greater predominance of mothers with one child (45.71%), 77.14% with no history of a dead child, 82.86% with a single pregnancy, 45.71% between 28 and 31 weeks, 31.4 had more than 7 antenatal consultations and 62.86% had a caesarean section. As for infant deaths related to newborns, there was a greater predominance of children born between 1 and 1.4kg (31.43%), males (54.29%), brown (51.43%), APGAR of 7 to 10 (45.71%) and other perinatal causes of death (28.57%). Of the 4 maternal deaths, 75% were aged between 20 and 30, brown (50%), in a stable union (75%), died in the puerperium (50%) and were housewives (75%).

Epidemiology of Ranibizumab intravitreal applications
The use of intravitreal anti-VEGF is becoming increasingly routine in ophthalmological practice today and is responsible for the treatment of numerous ocular pathologies. It basically acts by inhibiting the angiogenesis that this endothelial growth factor promotes. Studies show that VEGF-A is the factor that most induces vascular permeability and is therefore involved in the genesis of ocular neovascularisation, present in diseases such as AMD, diabetic retinopathy, vascular occlusions, among others. There are numerous drugs that are currently used to treat the aforementioned pathologies. These include Pegaptanib (MacugenR), which basically inhibits forms of VEGF longer than 165 amino acids. Bevacizumab, which is a humanised monoclonal antibody (AvastinR), acts directly against VEGF-A and all its isoforms, but its ocular use is off-label.2 Ranibizumab (LucentisR) acts by inhibiting all isoforms of VEGF-A, and because it is a humanised antibody fragment, it easily penetrates the retina.

Ischemic heart disease
Cardiovascular diseases are among the leading causes of death in the world. Ischemic heart disease is one of the main health problems in the elderly, its incidence follows an upward curve and presents a high mortality, with the aim of determining the risk factors associated with ischemic heart disease in older adults of the clinic 8 of the health area of Manacas during 2019, a case-control study was conducted. The case group consisted of 34 older adults with a diagnosis of ischemic heart disease and was matched 1: 1 according to sex for the controls. Statistical analysis was performed using the percentage method and odds ratio. Ischemic heart disease in older adults in clinic 8 of the Manacas area predominates in male patients and increases directly proportional to age. Angina is the most frequent. All the factors studied behaved as predisposing factors for the development of heart disease, with arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus standing out in that order.
Immune Basis of Antimicrobial Resistance
Antibiotics are among the most important discoveries of the 20th century, having saved millions of lives from infectious diseases. Microbes have developed acquired antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to many drugs due to high selection pressure from the increasing use and misuse of antibiotics over the years. The transmission and acquisition of AMR occur primarily via a human-to-human interface, both within and outside of healthcare facilities. A huge number of interdependent factors related to healthcare and agriculture govern the development of AMR through various drug-resistance mechanisms. The emergence and spread of AMR from the unrestricted use of antimicrobials in livestock feed has been a major contributing factor. The prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria has attained an incongruous level worldwide and threatens global public health as a silent pandemic, necessitating urgent intervention. Therapeutic options for infections caused by antimicrobial-resistant bacteria are limited, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality with a high financial impact.
Methotrexate
Methotrexate (MTX), an FDA-approved folic acid antagonist, is highly effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, and various cancers, including acute leukemia, head and neck cancer, and osteosarcoma. However, systemic administration of anticancer agents often suffers from off-target effects, impacting efficacy and tolerability. Photopharmacology, which employs photoswitchable drugs, is well-suited for enhancing drug activity. Precise spatiotemporal control reduces off-target effects, allowing higher doses for improved efficacy. This book delves into MTX's historical development and current applications, exploring its potential as a photoswitchable inhibitor for human and E. coli DHFR through a comprehensive structure-based drug discovery approach. It guides readers through methotrexate's evolution, highlighting its role as a pioneer in precision medicine. The book emphasizes the integration of conventional pharmacological principles with innovative photopharmacological strategies, shaping a promising frontier in targeted therapeutic interventions.
Beh癟et’s disease
Beh癟et's disease (BD) is relatively common in the Mediterranean basin and the Far East, affecting slightly more men than women between the ages of 20 and 40. It is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the blood vessels. This inflammation can affect blood vessels of any size, and can damage all the body's organs. Diagnosis is based on constantly revised clinical criteria. The neurological manifestations of MB are dominated by parenchymal involvement, with variable clinical presentation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard for this disease. Management of MB is guided by the severity of the disease and the type of organ affected. Colchicine, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids are often sufficient to control the cutaneous-mucosal and articular manifestations of MB. Therapeutic advances with the development of new molecules, immunosuppressants, immunomodulators, lymphocyte-targeting therapies and hematopoietic stem cell autografts have improved the prognosis.

Geographical Distribution of Nurses in Portugal
Health services in Portugal currently face a number of limitations in terms of both budget and human resources. It is therefore particularly important that they have an adequate distribution of resources, according to the needs of the population. As far as the distribution of nurses in Portugal is concerned, there is very little literature available in Portugal that looks at and studies the distribution of nurses in Portugal and their respective motivations. It was therefore decided to carry out a study to assess the statistics on the distribution of nurses in Portugal at county level and in the years 2002 to 2010 obtained from the National Statistics Institute database, putting them into context with OECD countries. The distribution of the number of nurses at county level was assessed using the gini index, which shows the equity or inequity of the distribution of health professionals. After this evaluation, the OLS methodology will also be used, according to the static and dynamic model. The aim of this method is to verify the aspects that influence the distribution of nurses in 2002 and 2010.
Physical and psychological impact of miscarriage on women
Emerging evidence suggests that miscarriage is associated with significant and potentially long-lasting psychological and physical consequences. Despite the high frequency of pregnancies complicated by miscarriage, there are no available data on the psychological impacts, particularly perinatal grief, as well as possible physical impacts in Tunisian women who have experienced miscarriage. We conducted a descriptive and analytical study using an anonymous questionnaire including the perinatal grief scale (PGS) with the aim of describing the physical and psychological consequences of miscarriage in women. The mean PGS score was 103.57, with a large standard deviation of 27.17, including 67.9% of women with total scores above or equal to the threshold (>= 91). In terms of physical repercussions, 69.7% reported difficulty falling asleep, 67.9% said they had a disturbance in their appetite, and 44% said they had experienced post-abortive vaginismus.
Nursing Interventions for Child and Adolescent Victims of Abuse
Abuse perpetuated against children and adolescents is a reality that jeopardises their physical and mental health, compromising their quality of life and well-being both in the present and in the future, as it leaves serious and often irreversible consequences. The relevance of this topic is based on the difficulty felt and observed in the context of clinical nursing practice in identifying, notifying and referring situations of child/adolescent abuse, which makes it necessary to raise nurses' awareness of this reality. The practice and behaviour of professionals in dealing with child and adolescent victims of abuse are closely related to the still obscure visibility that the problem assumes in everyday life. Reflecting on the concepts of the different types of abuse and the ideas associated with them helps to understand how to deal with identifiable cases.
Avoidability of neonatal death in low birth weight premature infants in the ICU
Analysing neonatal intensive care units, low birth weight is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Researchers point out that knowledge of the population treated in hospital services can subsidise health care actions, meeting their needs and planning efficient care. Methodology An analytical, comparative and retrospective study of the profile of NBs under/equal to 1,500g admitted to the ICUs of a teaching hospital in the northern region of Portugal. Discharge/death outcome factors were subjected to multivariate analysis. The lower the NB's weight, the greater the chances of death due to various complications. In other words, the lower the weight, the more medication resources were used. However, despite the data, there was no increase in the length of stay in the units and/or a reduction in the mortality rate. In this context, we can see the fragility of health services in relation to the care of low birth weight neonates in ICUs and the need to apply new routines and continuing education, so that neonates can have a longer survival with better results.
Congenital Malformations of the Central Nervous System
Neural tube defects are important determinants of perinatal morbidity and mortality, and the risk of death depends on the severity of the lesion and other factors, such as the availability of prior medical and surgical resources. In Brazil, according to the National Information System, in 2016 there were a total of 2,857,800 births, of which 4,085 were born with congenital malformations of the central nervous system, with 735 cases of spina bifida. In the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, of the 89,480 live births, 960 were born with a congenital anomaly of the central nervous system, statistically described, apart from cases of spina bifida, which accounted for 30 in total (BRASIL, 2017). The aim of this book is to review the subject of malformations of the central nervous system with an emphasis on myelomeningocele. It analyses embryonic alterations, clinical and surgical procedures, family relationships, socioeconomic status, quality of life and psychological aspects.

Wonder Drug
"A shocking saga of pharmaceutical malpractice . . . Wonder Drug is both a first-rate medical thriller and the searing account of a forgotten American tragedy."--Patrick Radden Keefe, author of Empire of Pain A "fascinating and compassionate" (People) account of the most notorious drug of the twentieth century and the never-before-told story of its American survivors. Longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal In 1959, a Cincinnati pharmaceutical firm, the William S. Merrell Company, quietly began distributing samples of an exciting new wonder drug already popular around the world. Touted as a sedative without risks, thalidomide was handed out freely, under the guise of clinical trials, by doctors who believed approval by the Food and Drug Administration was imminent. But in 1960, when the application for thalidomide landed on the desk of FDA medical reviewer Frances Kelsey, she quickly grew suspicious. When she learned that the drug was causing severe birth abnormalities abroad, she and a team of dedicated doctors, parents, and journalists fought tirelessly to block its authorization in the United States and stop its sale around the world. Jennifer Vanderbes set out to write about this FDA success story only to discover a sinister truth that had been buried for decades: For more than five years, several American pharmaceutical firms had distributed unmarked thalidomide samples in shoddy clinical trials, reaching tens of thousands of unwitting patients, including hundreds of pregnant women. As Vanderbes examined government and corporate archives, probed court records, and interviewed hundreds of key players, she unearthed an even more stunning find: Scores of Americans had likely been harmed by the drug. Deceived by the pharmaceutical firms, betrayed by doctors, and ignored by the government, most of these Americans had spent their lives unaware that thalidomide had caused their birth defects. Now, for the first time, this shocking episode in American history is brought to light. Wonder Drug gives voice to the unrecognized victims of this epic scandal and exposes the deceptive practices of Big Pharma that continue to endanger lives today.
The Role of the Nurse in the Digestive Endoscopy Room
Digestive endoscopy, which includes oesogastro-duodenal fibroscopy and colonoscopy, is indispensable in digestive pathologies. Nurses play a major role in these examinations. Our aim was to study the role of the nurse in the digestive endoscopy room. We carried out a questionnaire with 20 nurses. 2/3 of those questioned had no training in digestive endoscopy. The possible complications of endoscopy cited by the nurses were digestive haemorrhage, digestive perforation, infection, respiratory disorders and cardiovascular problems. The difficulties encountered by the nurses surveyed were workload, staff shortages, lack of equipment and lack of training. Around 3/4 of those surveyed mentioned the need for ongoing training. In conclusion, nurses are the backbone of digestive endoscopy, but they need ongoing training.

Beyond the Headlines
Heatwaves directly threaten human health. Excessive heat exposure can lead to heatstroke, a condition where the body overheats and can't cool down, causing organ damage and even death. Heat exhaustion, dehydration, and worsening of pre-existing health conditions like heart disease and respiratory problems are also common. The elderly, children, and those with underlying health conditions are particularly vulnerable. Imagine a frail elderly person living alone in a poorly ventilated apartment during a heatwave. The lack of air conditioning and limited mobility can be a deadly combination. Heatwaves also exacerbate social inequalities, disproportionately impacting low-income communities who may lack access to proper cooling or healthcare facilities.
