The NotBurger. Meat Substitution by the Use of Methyl Cellulose
Project Report from the year 2022 in the subject Food Technology, grade: 1,3, course: School of Agronomy, language: English, abstract: This paper is about the Chilean company "NotCo" and its product "NotBurger". It deals with the ingredients, the production of vegan meat substitutes and the nutritional values. In addition, the performance of a sensory triangle test is exemplified and its evaluation is discussed. Due to the steady growth of the world's population and increasing wealth in developing countries, the demand for protein is rising. However, it is difficult to meet the demand for protein with animal protein alone. In addition, several customers attach great importance to their well-being and health, so they avoid eating meat for ecological, ethical and social reasons. On the food industry side, a trend is emerging towards the production of plant-based protein-rich products for human consumption. In the first quarter of 2020, sales of meat substitutes in Germany increased by 37% compared to the first quarter of 2019, from just under 14.7 thousand tons to 20 thousand tons. For consumers to opt for the plant-based alternative, these products must mimic the techno-functional and sensory properties of animal products. In recent years, the offer from different manufacturers has increased and vegan sausages, hamburgers or chicken fillets are already widespread. As soy protein is increasingly rejected by consumers due to concerns about rainforest deforestation and genetically modified seeds, the number of products based on pea or wheat protein is increasing. Consumers are also increasingly turning their attention to other ingredients, which is why the trend is moving towards "clean labeling". Here, recipes are adapted so that as many, and ideally all, ingredients as possible can be found in the home kitchen. The aim is to counteract the reputation that substitute products are purely chemical and unhealthy foods. However, substitutes must have the same propertie
Handbook of Settings-Based Health Promotion
This book's central focus is to provide academics, students, policy-makers, and practitioners with a unique insight into a wide variety of perspectives on settings-based health promotion. It offers clarity amidst different interpretations and ideological understandings of what applying a settings-based approach means. Emphasis is given to a salutogenic focus, exploring how the creation of wellbeing and fostering of potential in settings to best enable individuals and populations to flourish implies that the setting itself must be the entry point for health promotion. Building on this, the text explores how the settings approach to health promotion strives for changes in the structure and ethos of the setting - detailing how changes and developments in people's health and health behavior are easier to achieve if health promoters focus on settings rather than solely on individuals. The book comprises 15 chapters organized in three sections: In Part I, Evolution, Foundations and Key Principles of the Settings-Based Approach, the first four chapters present the determinants, theoretical basis, and generic commonalities that are consistent over various settings initiatives and formulate the grounds for the settings-based health promotion approach. In Part II, Applying the Settings-Based Approach to Key Settings, Chapters 5-13 introduce the key settings initiatives - both traditional and non-traditional (new and contemporary) - with their developments and specific features. In Part III, Gaia - The Ultimate Setting for Health Promotion, the last two chapters consider the settings approach in the context of future challenges and explore possible directions for further development.Handbook of Settings-Based Health Promotion has novel information and perspectives on the topic that provide readers with up-to-date specialist knowledge and application of global developments to develop and enhance a common understanding and generate new thinking in relation to contemporary settings. This timely tome will engage the academic community in the fields of health promotion and public health including students, teaching staff, and researchers. Additionally, it is a useful resource for policy-makers and practitioners in these fields.

ECG Monitoring System for Detection of Arrhythmias and Minimization of Storage Requirements Using Compression Techniques
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2014 in the subject Medicine - Biomedical Engineering, grade: A, course: PhD, language: English, abstract: The main purpose of the present work is to design and implement a prototype ECG system with wireless links for continuous monitoring of the subject for cardiac related problems. The ECG signal acquired from subject is filtered, digitized, and compressed for wireless communication. The proposed system can be extended, upon interfacing with other devices, for continuous monitoring of other vital parameters of the patient. In automation of the ECG signal analysis, the workload of the medical professionals can be reduced. The automated system provides an alert when critical changes are detected by the system. Concisely stated, ECG of the patient is continuously monitored and deviations from normalcy are detected in real-time. The changes in the ECG could be due to heart attack, fibrillation or arrhythmias. In case of emergency, data is transmitted to a medical practitioner, who in turn can provide necessary directions to take care of the situation. In this manner, as the problems can be detected as and when they occur, the remedial actions are initiated before the problems become serious. The complete ECG diagnostic system includes a low power Instrumentation amplifier, filters, ADC, Microcontroller and ZIGBEE modules. MATLAB / LABVIEW are used for signal analysis and classification. These environments are capable of not only collecting, recording, transmitting, and displaying ECG data on a real time basis but also for analyzing the acquired ECG data in order to detect the cardiac abnormalities. The MIT-BIH database signals were used for validation and evaluation of classification algorithms. In order to reduce the memory requirements for storing the acquired ECG signals, ECG data was compressed. Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) technique was applied for ECG data compression. Here DCT showed good performance with a C
Substance use and creativity
After having gathered and organized information on creativity, pleasure and addictions, we tried to understand the different possible interactions between artistic creativity on the one hand and substance use on the other hand. We have successively studied the possibility that substances develop creativity, that the profession of artist and artistic activities encourage the use of psychoactive substances and finally that both are part of the same process with common roots and functions. We then considered more specifically the possible therapeutic applications and in particular the interest of art-mediated therapies in patients suffering from addiction problems. Even if the studies presented lack scientific rigor, their results seem to go in the direction of a better knowledge, a better expression and a better self-esteem. It would seem relevant to develop new research and to encourage the concrete and valued development of this type of therapy in addiction care facilities.
Obstetrical urogenital fistulas in the hospital of Segou, Mali
A prospective and longitudinal study of 18 months (December 2012 to May 2014), which took place in the department of general surgery of the hospital of Segou on the management of 56 cases of obstetric urogenital fistulas with the objective: to study obstetric urogenital fistulas in the hospital of Segou. The age range of 21 to 30 years was the most represented (41.1%). 41% of the patients contracted the fistula before the age of 20. 64.3% of the patients had a height between 151-160 centimeters. The living environment was conjugal in 69.6% of cases. Fistulas less than one year old constituted 46.4% of the sample. 51.8% of the patients had not received prenatal consultations. 66.1% had a long labor of 24 to 72 hours. 80.4% of the patients delivered in a health facility, by caesarean section in 55.3% of the cases and resulted in stillbirth in 94.6% of the cases. The fistula was type I in 30.4% of the cases, located in a soft vagina in 85.7% of the cases. 62.5% of the patients were at their first surgical repair. The vaginal route was the most commonly used (71.4%). The fistulas were closed and dried in 62.5%.
Assessment of the Epidemiological Approach in Surveillance of Notifiable Diseases in a Selected City in NCR (National Capital Region)
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2022 in the subject Health - Public Health, grade: 1.25, course: Master in Public Health, language: English, abstract: In the event of the ongoing pandemic, disease surveillance was one of the pillars in prevention of the spread of disease. The COVID-19 pandemic was an eye-opener for the whole world, in which the practice of disease surveillance was reevaluated for improvement. In the Philippines the disease surveillance encompasses the reporting of notifiable diseases which is important in controlling, preventing, and providing a response to the area that is affected by the disease that can possibly to result in death. The objective of this study was to assess the epidemiological approach to surveillance of notifiable diseases in a selected city in NCR. There were one hundred ninety-six (196) respondents or 91% of the sample projection which were coming from different health facilities in the said City. This study emphasizes the importance of the Epidemiological approach in dealing with disease surveillance, which will lead to disease containment and the establishment of an improved and strong epidemiological approach in assessing disease outbreaks. The result of the study will also help to promote the updating of protocols in disease surveillance and disease containment of notifiable diseases in cases of disease outbreaks, epidemics, and even pandemics. The study also provides the current assessment of the epidemiological approach in surveillance of notifiable diseases in a selected city in NCR in times of pandemic, which will provide background for enhancement of the disease surveillance in line with the pandemic situation and infectious diseases that may arise anytime.
The Efficacy Of Herbal Mixtures On Some Bacteria. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogene
Project Report from the year 2023 in the subject Biology - Micro- and Molecular Biology, grade: 4.27, University Of Abuja (FACULTY OF SCIENCE), course: MICROBIOLOGY, language: English, abstract: This study is on the efficacy of herbal mixtures on some selected bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogene was conducted. The zone diameter of inhibition in millimeter of Aqueous extracts of herbal mixture at concentration of 500 mg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus shows that Herbal mixture met the standard of the antibiotic used as the positive control (Chloramphenicol) with 25.0簣1.0 mm each. Meanwhile Streptococcus pyogene had significant zone diameter of inhibition (24mm against the herbal mixtures) at concentration of 500mg/ml. The extracts of the herbal mixture had the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of 200 mg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus and which correlate with the control (Chloramphenicol), while the MIC of 400 mg/ml against Streptococcus pyogene respectively. The Minimum bactericidal concentration of the extracts shows that the herbal mixtures have the least value of 400 mg/ml which correlates with the standard antibiotic (Chloramphenicol) used as control against Streptococcus pyogene. The Herbal mixture had MBC of 400 mg/ml which also correlates with the standard antibiotics drug (Chloramphenicol).

In this valuable treatise, Hippocrates suggested to the traveling physicians to look into the seasons of the year and their effects. He presented the health implications of the winds, the qualities of the waters, and each city's unique setting in the landscape.
Don't Take Away My Adderall!
In our current culture, we are conditioned to turn to pharmaceuticals for every 'ill'-ness, including our emotional conditions. There is a verifiable 'pill for every ill'. However, our emotional disorders are typically chronic, and we are demanding acute chemical interventions from our physicians for our very chronic illness. Such is our demand for immediate gratification regardless of the potentially very hazardous, and even life-threatening, consequences. This book focuses our attention on one popular movement in recent years, namely the ever-increasing demand for stimulants for emotional well-being and performance enhancement. Whereas, the paradoxical response to stimulants in children with true ADHD, which is thought to be protective against misuse, the regular ingestion of substances like Adderall in normal individuals can lead to abuse and life-threatening complications particularly in our older population. This growth in the scope of stimulant use has exploded of late and the cardiovascular risks are beginning to become manifest. This manuscriptessentially acts as a public health announcement. However, no serious public health announcement would be credible unless the individuals making such a bold claim were not credible themselves. The three physician authors of this text have a combined total of more than 80 years of clinical experience in the daily treatment of children, adolescents and adults suffering ADHD as well as the spectrum of addiction misuse.

The Day the Science Died
The coronavirus pandemic has hit the nation and the world like a tsunami, so much so that history seems to divide into pre- and post-covid. We have entered a Bizarro World in which all the things that allow us to co-exist as a civilization of intelligent, self-governing men and women-work, school, church, fresh air, outdoor exercise, entrepreneurship, love, friendship, verve, spontaneity, joyous celebration, the human face-have been relentlessly downgraded. We are being asked to give up most of the things that make life worth living-including sovereignty over our own bodies-in exchange for a fantasy of never dying. This transaction deserves perhaps more scrutiny than it has received."A gut-wrenching account of the harms caused by COVID-19 vaccines in diverse populations of healthy people who willingly took these experimental and half-baked jabs. A meticulous documentation of what is wrong with agencies that are supposed to safeguard our health interests and how the system is set up so that it can be easily gamed. Morality and ethics are in name only. The book outlines so many reasons as to why we need a 'reset' for biomedical science and the practice of medicine. A must-read." Aditi Bhargava, Ph.D., Prof. Emeritus, UCSF"No one ever thinks something will happen to them until it does. Harms in medicine often go invisible. I learned long ago the importance of sharing our stories. Not only is it healing, but lets others know they're not alone. Collectively, our stories speak truth to power and can drive change. Never let anyone take your story away from you."Kim Witczak, Global Drug Safety Advocate and FDA Consumer Representative"Kudos to Patrick Hahn for outlining the history of the Covid "vaccine" and how we have been herded like sheep to the slaughter over the past several years by huge, evil corporations. His conclusions echo my own in Cassandra's Memo: Covid and the Global Psychopaths (2022). Do not miss this well-written and exhaustively referenced work if you want to learn the truth." Robert Yoho, M.D., author of Butchered by Healthcare"In this thoroughly researched book, Patrick Hahn sets out the perils of the pandemic and our nation's disastrous policy response-the emergency authorization of the novel, inadequately tested mRNA vaccine. A mesmerizing time-capsule of the vaccine's mass roll-out, Hahn also reveals the hidden human collateral of the vaccine's rushed approval, including his own injuries. Hahn outs the truth in this extraordinary documentation of conflicted interests, censorship, and propaganda ruling the agencies and individuals intended to protect us."Linda Wastila, M.S.P.H., Ph.D, Professor and Endowed Chair, University of Maryland Baltimore

Imposter Doctors
When you experience a medical emergency, you expect to be treated by a licensed physician with expertise in your condition. What happens when you look up from your hospital gurney to find that the doctor has been replaced by a non-physician practitioner with just a small fraction of the training and experience? From the co-author of Patients at Risk: The Rise of the Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant in Healthcare, the first book to warn of the systematic replacement of physicians, comes Imposter Doctors, an even more frightening expos矇 of patient endangerment at the hands of for-profit corporate entities and healthcare conglomerates. In the two years since Patients at Risk debuted, the employment of non-physician practitioners has continued to skyrocket. While advocates insist that nurse practitioners and physician assistants are 'just as good' as physicians, they are wrong. Despite over fifty years of scientific analysis, there is no conclusive evidence that non-physicians can provide safe and effective medical care without physician oversight. In fact, recent studies have shown the opposite: that the replacement of physicians puts patients at risk. The only cure for today's healthcare crisis is for patients to become informed about who is providing their care. We must all know the difference in clinician education and training, and demand answers from those who would deprive us of physician-led care.
Perinatal Care and Considerations for Survivors of Child Abuse
This edited collection collates research concerning the challenges and opportunities of pregnancy and the postpartum period for perinatal women who are survivors of child abuse. Drawing on empirical findings and theory, this is the first book to identify emerging and topical issues around screening and disclosure and how clinicians and professionals may help to build resilience for child abuse survivors. Pregnancy and the postpartum period present unique challenges and opportunities for clinicians and mental health professionals who may encounter pregnant women with adverse childhood experiences. Challenges include antenatal care considerations for survivors of child abuse such as triggering events that may further traumatize women or result in avoidance behaviours such as failing to engage in routine antenatal care, and other associated adverse outcomes including increased health concerns and, in some cases, prolonged labour and preterm birth. These challenges point to the need for identifying women at risk and providing sensitive care, and this book demonstrates the opportunities which arise through interventions and resilience building.
Red Light Therapy
Red light therapy is a natural and 100% safe treatment that works by emitting special wavelengths that stimulate the mitochondria in cells to produce ATP, which is essential to build collagen. Once the light is absorbed by the skin, it produces light energy which is then converted to cell energy that is responsible for growing fiber cells, tissue & collagen. It increases skin elasticity and helps to naturally rejuvenate. This natural treatment is backed by several scientific studies and has been proven to be effective to treat certain skin conditions and improve overall health. Here are just a few things you will get out of this book: What is Red Light Therapy and whether or not you should use itAll possible benefits of Red Light TherapyInstructions on how to use red light therapy at YOUR OWN HOME10 reasons why you should use Red Light TherapyMost common mistakes while using Red Light TherapyKey Preparation before and during the therapy you need to know aboutMany Many more...In the same way that many people are shifting towards non-invasive, holistic treatments for illness, animal owners are increasingly open to alternative therapies for their beloved pets.Red light therapy works on animals in much the same way that it works on humans. Nearly all forms of life benefit from red and near-infrared light exposure when it is administered in a sustained manner over time.

Integrated End of Life Care in Dementia
Dementia is a life-limiting illness that involves cognitive impairment and a declining level of functioning in affected patients. Over 55 million individuals worldwide live with dementia and this number is expected to rise due to increase of the aging population. Despite its prevalence, dementia is not a part of normal aging and can be challenging to manage. There is a need for individualized care to manage this complex illness. Integrated palliative care in dementia is a multidisciplinary approach that can help to address the needs of this population and maximize quality of life for the affected population. This book outlines the benefits of palliative care in dementia, and discusses important concepts not to be overlooked while caring for these patients such as advance care planning, pain and symptom management, prognostication, polypharmacy, existent models of palliative care, challenges that patients and caregivers face during illness trajectory, and much more.
Principles of early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease
One of the important problems of modern neurology is the study of dementia. The increase in the number of older people and the change in their age index has led to an increase in the number of older people with cognitive impairment and dementia. Studies show that the cause of memory loss in people over 65 is Alzheimer's disease (AD). Until now, complete information about the cause and course of Alzheimer's disease has not been provided. The accuracy of diagnosis is low in the early stages of the disease, especially in the pre-clinical stages.
Neurophysiological characterization of chemically induced neuropathies
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common complication. These chemotherapies for which patients present symptoms in the short term are most often the platinum derivatives (PD) and Taxanes. The neurotoxicity of these molecules has long been reported. Their indications are often similar. However, it would appear that their neurotoxic effects would not have the same weight chronologically. This is what we have tried to explain in this book in order to better guide the clinician in his management.

The authors' aim throughout has been to provide details of the usual clinical picture, the management, and the preventive or control measures widely accepted in these common infections. Tey have emphasized differential diagnosis, comparing the principal infectious diseases, particularly those with a specific rash, to other diseases with similar features, in an effort to clarify some of the essential differential diagnostic points in these diseases.Dr. Anglin and Dr. Shusterman have collaborated with Dr. Silverthorne in preparing this revision, which contains important new sections on virus infections and on ocular diseases. When the first edition of this book was published in 1958, Acta Paediatrica wrote: 'Dr. Silverthorne...has intended this concise but complete volume for the use of medical students and general practitioners. Compact in its format, and easily read, it will make a useful and valuable addition to any medical library....Particular mention should be made of the section dealing with infections in the newborn period. This rather large area is admirably well condensed, and the important points in diagnosis and management are forcefully brought out. Although not intended as a textbook it should prove exceedingly useful as a guide to the physician who daily sees the conditions which comprise its contents."
Neural Integration of Physiological Mechanisms and Behaviour
Physiology, unlike most biological sciences, is characterized less by methods of study than by its goal, the understanding of the complex interactions at the cellular and organismic levels. Ever since Claude Bernard's introduction of the concept of homeostasis as a basic principle of survival, biological scientists have attempted to integrate mechanisms characteristic of organs and systems to explain the overall functioning of the whole animal. This book is dedicated to the memory of the distinguished Canadian physiology J.A.F. Stevenson, who maintained in his teaching and research activities a holistic approach to the study of physiological regulations and life processes. Two of the book's introductory essays are tributes by men who remember James Stevenson as a scientist and as a friend. The third gives a sketch of early studies of physiological regulations. The twenty-four remaining articles serve as examples of integrated physiological regulations with special attention paid to the role of the hypothalamus and limbic systems. Extensive reviews of the anatomical and chemical foundations of neural systems controlling vegetative functions and behaviour, and several articles dealing with aspects of neural and endocrine control of energy and water balance, are highlights of this volume. It also deals with central control of the respiratory system, pituitary hormones, body temperature, growth, and sexual behaviour. The final chapter presents the clinical correlates of disturbed physiological regulations as seen in human pathological conditions associated with hypothalamic and limbic lesions. Because of its intrinsically multidisciplinary nature this book should appeal to a wide variety of readers, including physiologists, anatomists, experimental neurologists, physiological psychologists, psychiatrists and neurosurgeons.

Covid
COVID-19 outbreak has become a worldwide pandemic. This book "CO-VI-D: Viruses/Vaccines" provides new and unique approach to the discussion of viruses and vaccines in the recent advent of Corona virus. COVID-19 disease is a novel viral disease that was first identified in Wuhan, China. The World Health Organization (WHO) announced its official name, Coronavirus disease 2019, abbreviated as COVID-19; 'CO' stands for 'Corona', 'VI' stands for 'Virus', and 'D' stands for 'Disease'. Globally, more than 10 million people are reported to be infected by COVID-19 (WHO Coronavirus Disease Dashboard, 2020). Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, USA, 2020) (provided guidelines on how to reduce the risk of infection. It has been discovered that some people get really very sick and die, whereas to some people nothing happens even though they test positive for the virus. Through this book, we intend to explore etiology, development, and treatment of the COVID-19 disease. The specific topics will give details that could help in understanding symptoms, immunity, worldwide spread and treatments so that we could beat this invisible dangerous beast, the COVID-19.
Compound Remedies
Compound Remedies examines the equipment, books, and remedies of colonial Mexico City's Herrera pharmacy--natural substances with known healing powers that formed part of the basis for modern-day healing traditions and home remedies in Mexico. Paula S. De Vos traces the evolution of the Galenic pharmaceutical tradition from its foundations in ancient Greece to the physician-philosophers of medieval Islamic empires and the Latin West and eventually through the Spanish Empire to Mexico, offering a global history of the transmission of these materials, knowledges, and techniques. Her detailed inventory of the Herrera pharmacy reveals the many layers of this tradition and how it developed over centuries, providing new perspectives and insight into the development of Western science and medicine: its varied origins, its engagement with and inclusion of multiple knowledge traditions, the ways in which these traditions moved and circulated in relation to imperialism, and its long-term continuities and dramatic transformations. De Vos ultimately reveals the great significance of pharmacy, and of artisanal pursuits more generally, as a cornerstone of ancient, medieval, and early modern epistemologies and philosophies of nature.

Traumatic Brain Injury
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a disorder that destructs brain functions and results in severe cognitive and emotional disturbances. It is a common reason for mortality and morbidity of human beings globally. Recent researches indicated that the transplanted mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can migrate and accommodate into the injured brain sites to contribute in the healing of the damaged brain tissue. The underlying mechanisms behind the action of MSCs are the anti- apoptotic and anti-inflammatory properties of these cells beside their ability to release neurotrophic and angiogenic factors. On the other hand, the poor target engagement of TBI delivered therapeutics has extended the opportunities of nanoparticle (NP)-based approaches to improve site-specific drug delivery and bioavailability. The therapeutic strategies via NP delivery system showed promise in exhibiting neuroprotective effect, reducing neurovascular unit disruption and preventing the expansion of biochemical perturbations to the adjacent healthy brain. This book will mainly discuss the updates about the latest therapeutic modalities for TBI hoping to set evidence for treatment of this disorder.
Biomarkers of Radiation in the Environment
This proceedings volume results from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on 'Biomarkers of Radiation in the Environment: Robust Tools for Risk Assessment (BRITE)'. The BRITE workshop discussed insights from cancer research, epigenetics, non-human and human risk assessment, since many of the state-of-the-art biomarkers being developed for humans deserve consideration for environmental applications and vice versa. Sessions were very wide-ranging covering methods, mechanisms, cross disciplinary application and regulation. The chapters in this book have been grouped into five major themes that were covered by the BRITE workshop: - Techniques for biomarker development- Low-dose effect mechanisms- Biomarkers for risk evaluation- Biomarkers in wildlife- Biomarker use and responses Each chapter has been written independently and reflects the views of the chapter author(s). Therefore, the readers can form their own balanced view of the different perspectives on biomarkers of radiation in the environment. Given the breadth of topics covered and the state-of-the-art perspectives shared by leading experts in their respective fields, this book should form a valuable resource for anyone with an interest in how biomarkers can be used to improve our understanding of radiation in the environment and its potential impacts.
Thomas Percival's Medical Ethics and the Invention of Medical Professionalism
This book provides the first comprehensive, historically based, philosophical interpretations of two texts of Thomas Percival's professional ethics in medicine set in the context of his intellectual biography. Preceded by his privately published and circulated Medical Jurisprudence of 1794, Thomas Percival (1740-1804) published Medical Ethics in 1803, the first book thus titled in the global histories of medicine and medical ethics. From his days as a student at the Warrington Academy and the medical schools of the universities of Edinburgh and Leyden, Percival steeped himself in the scientific method of Francis Bacon (1561-1626). McCullough shows how Percival became a Baconian moral scientist committed to Baconian deism and Dissent. Percival also drew on and significantly expanded the work of his predecessor in professional ethics in medicine, John Gregory (1724-1773). The result is that Percival should be credited with co-inventing professionalism in medicine with Gregory. To aid and encourage future scholarship, this book brings together the first time three essential Percival texts, Medical Jurisprudence, Medical Ethics, and Extracts from the Medical Ethics of Dr. Percival of 1823, the bridge from Medical Ethics to the 1847 Code of Medical Ethics on the American Medical Association. To support comparative reading, this book provides concordances of Medical Jurisprudence to Medical Ethics and of Medical Ethics to Extracts. Finally, this book includes the first Chronology of Percival's life and works.

Inquiries into Human Faculty and its Development
"The moral and intellectual wealth of a nation largely consists in the multifarious variety of the gifts of the men who compose it . . ." -Sir Francis Galton, Inquiries into Human Faculty and Its Development Inquiries into Human Faculty and Its Development (1907) by Francis Galton is a landmark work in the field of anthropology. In it, Galton coined the term "eugenics," arguing for a selection system of euthanasia based on a classification of humans. To that end, this book discusses the many differences among humans that can be identified, including physical features, emotions, psychology, character, criminality, gregarious and slavish natures, intellectual differences, mental imagery, the history of twins, and race, among others. This is the 1907 edition updated by the author of the original classic first published in 1883.
Evaluation of medical device sterilization processes and
The hospital is the ultimate care facility. However, there is a risk that the patient may acquire a nosocomial infection. In the context of the prevention of this type of infectious risk, sterilization holds a primordial place. Our study aims to evaluate Good Sterilization Practices (G.S.P.) in relation to standards in hospitals in Mali and Senegal. It will enable us to make recommendations for improving sterilization procedures. This work is part of the Master's program in Hospital and Community Pharmacy at Cheick Anta Diop University in Dakar. In the study, we present the problem of sterilization of medical devices and operating fields in hospitals and we make proposals for reorganizing the field in the structures studied.
Exocrinology
This is the first textbook solely dedicated to the study of exocrine glands and cells throughout the human body. Students will gain a broad overview of the whole exocrine system, it's structural features and learn to understand it's integral parts in almost all bodily functions. Taking a systemic approach, the author guides readers through the different organ sites, shapes, methods of secretion and their secretory products. Starting with the glands of the integument, which is covering the outside of the body, the chapters proceed to also discuss the urinary tract, respiratory, digestive and reproductive systems. Various levels of complexity, from single goblet cells to the major organs, are thoroughly explained. A basic knowledge in histology is advantageous, for the numerous and rich illustrations. With its inviting writing style, this textbook is a perfect learning tool for students in Physiology and Medicine - particularly considering Dentistry, Dermatology, Gastroenterology and Pulmonology.
The Rosetta Stone of the Human Mind
The study of the brain-mind complex has been hampered by the dichotomy between objective biological neuroscience and subjective psychological science, based on speculative topographic models and psychodynamics formulations. These antithetical avenues of research have evolved into a polarization of neuroscience, which is partly responsible for the failure to unravel the transformation of neural events into mental images: how matter becomes imagination, and vice versa. The Rosetta Stone of the Human Mind: Three Languages to Integrate Neurobiology and Psychology presents a new theoretical model "translating" between biological neuroscience principles and psychological science, using a third language: nonlinear physics and mathematics. Simultaneous use of the two approaches can enrich understanding of the neural and mental realms, and add new dimensions to our perception of neuropsychological events. Awareness and application of these perspectives can help in getting a deeper theoretical grasp on major mental events, better understanding single minds, and a more integrated therapeutic intervention.
Death And Anti-Death, Volume 20
Volume 20 (236 pages) is in honor of Gerard K. O'Neill (1927-1992). One question Dr. O'Neill attempted to answer was "Is the surface of a planet really the right place for an expanding technological civilization?" Eight of the thirteen chapters are related to this question (or to Dr. O'Neill). Five of the thirteen chapters are related to other important topics. The anthology's chapters (by professional philosophers and other scholars and professionals) are directed to issues related to death, life extension, and anti-death, broadly construed. The contributions consist of relevant reprints as well as scholarship unique to this volume. As was the case with all previous volumes in the Death And Anti-Death Series By Ria University Press, the anthology includes an Abstracts section that serves as an extended table of contents. (part 1 of 2) CHAPTER ONE Future Space Programs - 9 August 1975 (Congressional Statement By Asimov) By Isaac Asimov; CHAPTER TWO Images Of Gerry: The Enduring Personae Of Dr. Gerard K. Live Like Nobody Is Watching
Respect for patient autonomy and data privacy are generally accepted as foundational western bioethical values. Nonetheless, as our society embraces expanding forms of personal and health monitoring, particularly in the context of an aging population and the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, questions abound about how artificial intelligence (AI) may change the way we define or understand what it means to live a free and healthy life. Who should have access to our health and recreational data and for what purpose? How can we find a balance between users' physical safety and their autonomy? Should we allow individuals to forgo continuous health monitoring, even if such monitoring may minimize injury risks and confer health and societal benefits? Would being continuously watched by connected devices ironically render patients more isolated and their data more exposed than ever? Drawing on different use cases of AI health monitoring, this book explores the socio-relational contexts that frame the promotion of AI health monitoring, as well as the potential consequences of such monitoring for people's autonomy. It argues that the evaluation, design, and implementation of AI health monitoring should be guided by a relational conception of autonomy, which addresses both people's capacity to exercise their agency and broader issues of power asymmetry and social justice. It explores how interpersonal and socio-systemic conditions shape the cultural meanings of personal responsibility, healthy living and aging, trust, and caregiving. These norms in turn structure the ethical space within which expectations regarding predictive analytics, risk tolerance, privacy, self-care, and trust relationships are expressed. Through an analysis of home health monitoring for older and disabled adults, direct-to-consumer health monitoring devices, and medication adherence monitoring, this book proposes ethical strategies at both the professional and systemic levels that can help preserve and promote people's relational autonomy in the digital era.
