Use of Occlusal splints in Temporomandibular Joint Disorders
Despite the unanswered questions on the physiologic mechanisms that explain the effectiveness of intra-oral appliances on reducing symptoms of TMD, there is still a plethora of documentation that intra-oral appliance when used in the management plan accurately, can contribute to the relief of TMD symptoms. The clinician is encouraged to evaluate fully each particular patient case in an effort to develop a differential diagnosis that leads to effective management plan. Before commencing any appliance therapy for a TMD, the clinician should be confident that the patient will benefit from the therapeutic approach. If the symptoms reduced that will provide additional diagnostic information. The clinician also needs to consider that 40% of patients suffering from TMD demonstrate favorable response to therapy from a placebo effect. As with any treatment, a good patient-dentist relationship and concomitant with patent education, can alloy patient feelings and anxieties. It can contribute to a positive and favorable response to intra-oral occlusal splint therapy.
Challenges in Medical Ethics
This is a book about several specific and serious challenges that bioethics has to deal with in our time, particularly in the South African context. From an almost non-existent 'science' at the beginning of the 20th century, not receiving systematic reflection in intellectual circles such as universities, bioethics has grown with unprecedented strides and has established itself across the world as a major field of study. This book is an acknowledgement of the relevance and actuality of this development of bioethics internationally, and particularly in South Africa. In addition, it is an inter- and multidisciplinary composition of contributors and a significant reflection of the interdisciplinary approach that is universally required for bioethical work. The contributions also testify to a notable diversity in recently researched issues and in the backgrounds of the contributors.
Brain metastases of breast cancer
Breast cancer is the first cancer of women in the world and in Tunisia with an incidence of 46.3 and 37.8 cases / 100 000 inhabitants per year respectively. It is the second cause of cancer mortality in women in Tunisia with 17 deaths / 100 000 inhabitants per year. The management of metastatic breast cancer has undergone several advances over the past decades leading to an improvement in patient survival. However, 15 to 30% of patients will develop brain metastases (BM) during their disease. They can occur synchronously (at the time of diagnosis of the primary cancer) or metachronously (after 6 months of the end of the primary cancer treatment). The management of CD is multidisciplinary, involving neurologists, neurosurgeons, radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists and pathologists.Radiation therapy (RT) is one of the pillars of CD treatment and has long been the standard treatment with its different modalities. The place of surgery is discussed according to the operability and resectability of metastases, as well as the status of systemic disease.Systemic treatment can be based on chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and targeted therapy and depends on the terrain, molecular classification and previously prescribed treatments.
Oral Bioavailability Enhancement of an Anti-Viral Drug Using an Herbal Bio-Enhancer
The focus on HIV therapy has changed during the last ten years. Long-term treatment of HIV infection is now the norm in industrialised nations because to an expanding selection of effective, practical novel medicines and co-formulations. Because of this, maintaining the efficacy of the treatment has become dependent on tolerance and side-effect control. The majority of those who are infected do not have access to HIV and AIDS medications and therapies because anti-retroviral drugs are pricey. Antiviral medications are linked to a wide variety of adverse responses, metabolic issues, and toxicity, and research is ongoing to reduce the negative effects of currently available medications.Although these medications frequently lack the appropriate pharmacokinetics characteristics, they have great pharmacodynamics characteristics. As a result, it becomes vital to boost pharmacokinetics using the existing methods, such as enhancing lipophilicity and GIT permeability, developing innovative drug delivery systems, and including bio-enhancer in the formulation or dietary supplement. This strengthens the legal basis for choosing a bio-enhancer in the quest to change pharmacokinetic characteristics and reduce toxicity. Those with HIV infection can now live considerably longer with recovered immunity and economy thanks to the alteration in the formulation (using a bio-enhancer) of medications causing notable adverse reactions.
Manual of Embryo Selection in Human Assisted Reproduction
Selecting the best embryo to transfer to the uterus is key to successful in vitro fertilization (IVF). A huge amount of research has been devoted to this topic and there are numerous methods used, from simple morphological assessment to molecular biological techniques to assess the genome and metabolism of the newly fertilized embryo. For many of these techniques, an adequate evidence base is lacking, and expert opinion is valuable. Clinical imperatives require ranking all embryos in a cohort according to their viability, thereby enabling the selection of the best embryo to optimize live birth outcome: a key indicator used to measure and rate IVF Clinics worldwide. This clear and informative manual will provide embryologists and clinicians with an overview of the tools now available to assist in embryo selection, as well as evidence for their efficacy and safety and the broader considerations that must underlie these important clinical decisions.

Epidemiology of Digestive Cancers in Algeria
Digestive cancers, constitute a major and global public health problem, due to their frequency and severity. This is a multicenter descriptive epidemiological study from 2014 to 2018 on all cases of digestive cancers diagnosed in the East and South-East Algerian region. The gender distribution of digestive cancers shows that: In men, colorectal cancer occupies the first place with a crude and standardized rate of 14.6 and 19.3 per 100,000 inhabitants followed by stomach cancer with an average crude and standardized rate of 5.9 and 8.2 per 100,000 respectively, then comes the pancreatic cancer which represents 9.8% of all digestive cancers In women, the same distribution, however it is the cancer of the gallbladder and extrahepatic bile ducts that occupies the third place with a crude and standardized rate of 3.2 and 4.6 per 100 000 inhabitants. Cancers of the esophagus and small intestine are rare, representing less than 3% of digestive cancers. Their frequency will continue to increase in this region if no preventive measures are taken.
Prevention of infection in peritoneal dialysis
Peritoneal dialysis is one of the methods of extrarenal purification in patients with end-stage renal disease and receiving replacement therapy. In 2015, estimates suggest that 272,000 people are on peritoneal dialysis worldwide about 11% of the dialysis population. Infectious complications are the most feared complications of this technique. There are two main types of infections: infections of the catheter outlet and infections of the dialysis fluid. These peritonitises occur essentially as a result of contamination during handling, or either by continuity following an outlet infection or in relation to a bacterial translocation through the digestive wall. The objective of this work is to evaluate the theoretical knowledge and practical conduct of young Tunisian nephrologists in terms of prevention of infectious complications in order to detect the difficulties encountered and remedy them.

Expanding Mindscapes
The first collection of its kind to explore the diverse and global history of psychedelics as they appealed to several generations of researchers and thinkers. Expanding Mindscapes offers a fascinatingly fluid and diverse history of psychedelics that stretches around the globe. While much of the literature to date has focused on the history of these drugs in the United States and Canada, editors Erika Dyck and Chris Elcock deliberately move away from these places in this collection to reveal a longer and more global history of psychedelics, which chronicles their discovery, use, and cultural impact in the twentieth century. The authors in this collection explore everything from LSD psychotherapy in communist Czechoslovakia to the first applications of LSD-25 in South America to the intersection of modernism and ayahuasca in China. Along the way, they also consider how psychedelic experiments generated their own cultural expressions, where the specter of the United States may have loomed large and where colonial empires exerted influence on the local reception of psychedelics in botanical and pharmaceutical pursuits. Breaking new ground by adopting perspectives that are currently lacking in the historiography of psychedelics, this collection adds to the burgeoning field by offering important discussions on underexplored topics such as gender, agriculture, parapsychology, anarchism, and technological innovations.

Notes on Maritime Medicine
Maritime medicine represents an area of medicine that has origins dating back to Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Viking and European times. Seafarers have been the pioneers in the exploration of new continents, they have accessed territories that have given mankind access to resources found in other regions. The practice of maritime medicine requires that the professional has a series of skills and competencies that include a deep knowledge of the subject, professional ethics, ability to work in teams and interact with professionals from different areas, an openness to multicultural treatment, relations with international organizations to meet requirements for the transport of people and goods at the international level. This work is a compendium of some of the training activities that should be developed by students of the maritime medicine specialty program at the UCA and can serve as a first contact with the subject and reference for people who start learning in this specialized medical area and unknown to most of the medical staff at international level, we hope it will be useful.

Genetics
Genetics is a branch of biology that deals with the study of genes, genetic changes and inheritance in living organisms. Mendel studied the inheritance of traits, which is a model of how traits are passed from parents to children. He observed that organisms inherit discrete units of traits. This term, which is still used today, is a somewhat vague definition of what is referred to as a gene. Inheritance of traits and molecular genetic mechanisms of genes are still the main principles of genetics in the 21st century, but modern genetics has gone beyond inheritance to study the function and behavior of genes. Gene structure and function, diversity and distribution are studied in the text of the cell, organism and in the context of the population. Genetics has created various fields such as molecular genetics, epigenetics and population genetics.
Contraception and Modern Ireland
Contraception was the subject of intense controversy in twentieth-century Ireland. Banned in 1935 and stigmatised by the Catholic Church, it was the focus of some of the most polarised debates before and after its legalisation in 1979. This is the first comprehensive, dedicated history of contraception in Ireland from the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922 to the 1990s. Drawing on the experiences of Irish citizens through a wide range of archival sources and oral history, Laura Kelly provides insights into the lived experiences of those negotiating family planning, alongside the memories of activists who campaigned for and against legalisation. She highlights the influence of the Catholic Church's teachings and legal structures on Irish life showing how, for many, sex and contraception were obscured by shame. Yet, in spite of these constraints, many Irish women and men showed resistance in accessing contraceptive methods. This title is also available as Open Access.

Netley Diary 1915-1916
"I was after all the experiences I could collect, and wanted to know what a great military hospital was like ... I had to go to one, and decided on the grand style of doing it."Corporal Alec Riley was a signaller in the British Army's 42nd (East Lancashire) Division who served at Gallipoli in 1915. Four months on the peninsula left him debilitated, suffering nine septic sores and no less than four diseases - diphtheria, jaundice, enteritis and dysentery. Riley was evacuated by sea to the Greek island of Lemnos, 50 miles from Cape Helles on the peninsula. Here he survived five weeks in the care of an Australian field hospital before being stretchered onto a hospital ship bound for England. It was during the passage home that Riley decided on 'the grand style of doing it' and chose the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, as his destination. When it opened in 1863, Netley was the largest military hospital in the world, with more than 1,000 beds. During the First World War, capacity was doubled, and beds filled the corridors. Two temporary hutted hospitals were erected in the grounds behind the main building as the tide of sick and wounded from Gallipoli, the Western Front and other theatres of war rose."I have tried," says Riley, "to give some idea of life in one of the many wards, the various patients I met, our habits, amusements, hopes and fears."The diary chronicles Riley's last days on Gallipoli, his experiences of No. 1 Australian Stationary Hospital at Mudros, his passage home on the hospital ship Aquitania and his 11 months at Netley and its auxiliary hospitals, Shirley and Shorne Hill. With dry humour, Riley relates the small mischiefs between the convalescents and the medical staff. He tells of concert parties in the hospital's theatre, and recalls the songs of the time. He reflects on the efforts of the chaplains, whose efforts to elevate the 'army in blue' often missed the mark. One spoke on the evils of the rum ration, until a voice shouted "Have you ever been over the top?" Another chose to speak on the good that war does. "An unsavoury subject in a military hospital," thought Riley, "but we were curious to hear what good he thought it did."Most of all, Riley relates the experiences of a soldier, sick and broken, taking the journey shared by so many away from the front and on the slow road to recovery, a journey in his case that took more than a year. The book is richly illustrated with rarely seen images and three specially-produced maps.Included is a concise history of the Royal Victoria Hospital, as well as biographies of the author, his sister and two close comrades at Gallipoli.
Chasing Tourette's: Time, Freedom, and the Missing Self
This book offers a philosophical perspective on contemporary Tourette Syndrome scholarship, a field which has exploded over the last thirty years. Despite intense research efforts on this common neurodevelopmental condition in the age of the brain sciences, the syndrome's causes and potential cures remain intriguingly elusive. How does this lack of progress relate to the tacitly operating philosophical concepts that shape our current thinking about Tourette Syndrome? This book foregrounds these tacit concepts and shows how they relate to "big topics" in philosophy such as time, volition, and the self. By tracing how these topics relate to current research on Tourette's, it invites us to re-think our approach to research and care. Such re-thinking is urgently needed: individuals and families living with Tourette Syndrome remain under-serviced as pharmacological and behavioural therapies provide relief for some but not all who need support. This book highlights what questions we ask and do not ask in contemporary scholarship, thereby surfacing invisible constraints and opportunities in the field. It is of interest to scholars, health professionals, students, and affected families who want to better understand this burgeoning field of research with its conceptual controversies, approaches to aetiology, and directions for new research and improved clinical care.
Infectious lung disease
Acute community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in adults is a public health problem with a significant morbidity and mortality. Chest radiography is the only radiological diagnostic test that is recommended as a first step. Computed tomography (CT) is usually indicated in case of clinico-radiographic discordance. The aim of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic contribution of this examination in patients hospitalized for CAP and its impact on their therapeutic management.
