Pathophysiology of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to paralysis, sensory, and autonomic nervous system dysfunctions. However, the pathophysiology of SCI is complex, and not limited to the nervous system. Indeed, several other organs and tissue are also affected by the injury, directly or not, acutely or chronically, which induces numerous health complications. Although a lot of research has been performed to repair motor and sensory functions, SCI-induced health issues are less studied, although they represent a major concern among patients. There is a gap of knowledge in pre-clinical models studying these SCI-induced health complications that limits translational applications in humans. This reprint describes several aspects of the pathophysiology of spinal cord injuries. This includes, but is not limited to, the impact of SCI on cardiovascular and respiratory functions, bladder and bowel function, autonomic dysreflexia, liver pathology, metabolic syndrome, bones and muscles loss, and cognitive functions.

Functional nanomaterials have been widely applied for the treatment of various diseases, such as cancer, bacterial infection, diabetes, inflammation, and neurodegenerative disorders. Various therapeutic nanoplatforms have been developed with therapeutic functions and intelligent properties. However, the development of nanomedicine suffers from several challenges prior to their clinical applications. For instance, disease detection in an early stage is a critical challenge for nanomedicine. It is difficult to detect disease markers (e.g., proteins, genes, or cancer circulating cells), so nanoprobes with high sensitivity and selectivity are required. Moreover, to overcome drug resistance, it is highly desirable to develop functional nanomedicines with the combination of multiple therapeutic modalities, such as chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, chemodynamic therapy, radiotherapy, starving therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, the stability and degradability of most nanomedicines in biofluids should be carefully evaluated before their administration to humans. This book provides researchers with the latest investigations and findings in this field.

Indocyanine Green Injection (ICG). Tumor Detection Potential of ICG-navigated Imaging in Liver Surgery for Metastatic Lesions
Master's Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Medicine - Other, grade: Master, University of Ghent, language: English, abstract: This review aims to evaluate the tumor detection potential of ICG-navigated imaging in liver surgery for metastatic lesions. Fluorescence imaging is an intraoperative guidance method used for malignancy detection with increasing potential. Indocyanine-green (ICG) is a fluorescent dye with FDA approval and is commonly used in various medical procedures, including segmental hepatectomy and liver metastasectomies. Medical databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, were searched in July 2022. Articles analyzing the performance of ICG-guided surgeries in patients with liver metastases were eligible for inclusion. Tumor detection, diagnostic improvement, and margin-free tumor resection rates of ICG-guided imaging were evaluated and compared with preoperative and other intraoperative diagnostic methods.
