Early Detection and Intervention in Audiology
A textbook with case studies for audiologists and speech pathologists to make recommendations for early detection and intervention of hearing impairments in the South African context Early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) is the gold standard for any practicing audiologist, and for families of infants and children with hearing impairment. EHDI programs aim to identify, diagnose and provide intervention to children with hearing impairment from as early as six months old (as well as those at risk for hearing impairment) to ensure they develop and achieve to their potential. Yet EHDI remains a significant challenge for Africa, and various initiatives are in place to address this gap in transferring policy into practice within the southern African context. The diversity of factors in the southern African context presents unique challenges to teaching and research in this field, which has prompted this book project. The South African government's heightened focus on increasing access to health care which includes ongoing Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs, make this an opportune time for establishing and documenting evidence-based research for current undergraduate and postgraduate students. Early Detection and Intervention in Audiology: An African Perspective aims to address this opportunity. Grounded in an African context with detailed case studies, this book provides rich content that pays careful attention to contextual relevance and contextual responsiveness to both identification and intervention in hearing impairment. With diverse contributions from experts in local and international contexts, but always with an African perspective, this is textbook will be an invaluable resource for students, researchers and practitioners.

Video-oculographic Examination of Oculomotor Function in Presymptomatic ALS Mutation Carriers
Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Medicine - Neurology, Psychiatry, Addiction, grade: 1,0, University of Ulm (Klinik f羹r Neurologie), language: English, abstract: This thesis deals with the video-oculographic examination of oculomotor function in presymptomatic ALS mutation carriers. Cognitive deficits are observable in ALS. This study was performed in order to test if this deficit could already be observed in a preclinical phase. Up to this moment putative alterations in a preclinical, presymptomatic phase of ALS-MC are barely studied. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating preclinical oculomotor performance in asymptomatic ALS mutation carriers.quantitatively detect changes in executive eye movement control in asymptomatic ALS mutation carriers by video-oculographic examination under controlled conditions with healthy age, sex and educational matched healthy unrelated controls. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most frequent adult-onset motor neuron disease. As for now, causal therapeutic options are still limited for ALS. The devastating disease is defined as a fast progressive, multisystem degenerative disorder, which is clinically characterized by a predominant loss of motor neurons that disrupts signals to all voluntary innervated muscles. This leads to a progressive weakness of the respective muscles following an almost complete paresis after a couple of years. ALS usually ends in death due to respiratory failure after 30 months on average from disease onset.

Monte Carlo Simulation of a Curved-Detector Gamma Camera
Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Medicine - Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, grade: with Honours Degree, University of Aberdeen, course: Medical Physics, language: English, abstract: This study aims to develop a fully curved gamma camera using a Monte Carlo simulation in GATE to investigate whether there are any advantages to this configuration in terms of sensitivity or resolution. Both flat and curved detectors were simulated using the same materials and collimator hole diminutions to ensure valid comparable results. There were four sets of simulations conducted with different phantom sizes and different parameters to get comprehensive results. Then, ROOT and Jupyter Notebook were used to analyse the data to give the necessary visual and quantitative data to compare the two detectors. As a result, the curved detector proved to be better in terms of sensitivity in all simulation sets and yielded a better result with less noisy images when imaging small phantoms; nevertheless, it was more susceptible to high-energy photons, which penetrated the collimator and effected the image negatively. However, the flat detector was shown to be better in terms of resolution when imaging a large phantom and more immune to the high-energy collimator-penetrating photons. In addition, the flat detector images when imaging a larger phantom had less scattered photons and less noise. To conclude, further studies could be done to develop the proposed configuration and reach its maximum potential.

Tourettes Syndrome in Children and Young people
From observing our young people in this case series we understood that there is no cure for TS, although different drugs and psychological therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Habit reversal training can be helpful. None of these treatments completely eliminate symptoms and outcomes are variable depending on multiple factors. Acceptance of this at an early stage lead to acceptance and being able to adjust and move on. Recognising and managing co-morbidities such as ADHD and low mood also seemed to be crucial. In Tourettes Syndrome, the focus of assessments right from the beginning, needs to be on the associated psychosocial factors in addition to the symptoms themselves, as they seem to determine the functioning regardless of symptom severity. Finding potential strengths and building on them, developing a focus on purposeful activities that can be handled despite ongoing TS symptoms, can lead to good functioning even with poor symptom control. Also having a warm supportive family seems crucial to good functioning. Efforts need to made to support the whole family so that they develop a shared understanding and acceptance of the TS and work together to manage it.

Efficacy of CIMT and Mirror therapy on hand function in stroke
Neuroplasticity is formed on the concept of neuro-rehabilitation of the nervous system. The foundation of stroke rehabilitation observed with constraint-induced movement therapy and mirror therapy are exercises based on the concept of neuroplasticity. With the therapies mentioned above, those who have suffered a stroke are able to make recovery or improvements in some or all motor functions through neuroplasticity. This is due to the fact that the more the stroke patient uses their brain through exercise the stronger it will grow. When the post stroke patient performs repetitive tasks originally involving the use of damaged regions of the brain, it forces the brain and nervous system to adapt and find new ways to execute those movements properly by way of new connections.

Toxicology Nurse
A Toxicology Nurse takes care of patients who've swallowed poison, come into contact with a toxin, been bitten by a Snake/Spider or stung by a Scorpion/ Bee/ Wasp. Poisonings & overdoses due to pharmaceutical agents result in more than 100,000 Critical Care Unit admissions each year. Ingestion of Toxic Alcohols & Mushrooms, Acetaminophen, Beta-Adrenergic-Antagonists, Benzodiazepines, Calcium-channel-blockers, Opioids, Tricyclic antidepressants & Salicylates are associated with a high rate of Morbidity & Mortality. Reviewing the mechanism of toxicity due to specific agents along with the mechanism of action, dosing, & adverse effects of appropriate antidotes is important for the successful management of these patients within the ICU. Understanding the most prevalent overdoses and their management using reversal agents and antidotes is essential to the overall treatment of these critically ill patients. Emergency Nurses, ICU Nurses & Paramedics will enjoy reading and discover toxicological principles in this handbook with easy recalls, colorful memory aids, standard treatment guidelines, current recommendations and medicolegal controversies in saving lives from knives of autopsy.
OSCE & OSPE in Clinical Toxicology
Creating Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCEs) or Objective Structured Practical exams (OSPEs) exercises in Clinical Toxicology can be overwhelming, but the benefits of this kind of practice-based learning and assessment for future health care practitioners and their future patients, make them work definitely worth doing. They are important educational tools for high-quality teaching (formative assessments) as well as for the evaluation of basic and advanced clinical skills (summative assessments). Licensing and accrediting organizations around the world have embraced OSCEs and OSPEs. For example, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in the United States has recommended them as key components of their assessment Tool-box(ACGME/ ABMS). The US National Board of Medical Examiners(NBME) implements OSCE-type assessments as part of licensure(USMLE- part2). Recently Indian Medical Council-MCI has incorporated OSCE & OSPE in undergraduate MBBS curriculum for Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) in India. Organizing an OSCE is a major undertaking and, as with most other educational projects, requires strong and committed leadership & and good teamwork.
Radiology: Techniques and Applications
Radiology is a field concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, using medical imaging. Radiological imaging techniques include ultrasonography, X-ray radiography, nuclear medicine, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, etc. Advanced imaging techniques allow the meaningful acquisition of images of the interior of the body with a high degree of accuracy. Such techniques are of immense use in neuroradiology, musculoskeletal imaging, abdomen imaging, pediatric radiology, interventional radiology, breast imaging, etc. Perfusion MRI techniques are useful for the characterization of tumors and assessment of the hemodynamic state of brain tissue. MR elastography allows examination of the viscoelastic properties of the liver. Digital subtraction angiography is the best method for the evaluation of cerebral aneurysms. This book aims to shed light on some of the unexplored aspects of radiology and the recent researches in this domain. The various studies that are constantly contributing towards advancing techniques, applications and evolution of this field are examined in detail. Scientists and students actively engaged in this field will find this book full of crucial and unexplored concepts.
Transformative Reflection for Practicing Physicians and Surgeons
Transformative Reflection for Practicing Physicians and Surgeons is addressed to physicians and surgeons but the principles upon which it rests would be valuable for members of any profession. The Transformative Reflective Process has been designed and, over many years, tested in everyday practice with medical practitioners. Its focus is to unpack and explore the decision-making and professional judgements that doctors use frequently in everyday practice. The intention of this is to promote the development and growth of practical wisdom in order to enhance the quality of patient care. Transformative Reflection can radically enlighten a medical professional's understanding of themselves, their detailed thinking, and the nuances of their practice. The process sharpens a doctor's acumen (their ability to make good judgements and take quick decisions) and enables them to articulate for themselves and develop further, the deepest elements of what characterises their practice. In this sense therefore, it offers truly worthwhile education. It also provides a means of sharing the complexity and special nature of medical practice with those both inside and outside medicine, who need to understand it better. It has the potential, we believe, when shared, to benefit society's understanding of what is involved inside medical practice and thus clarify what it is reasonable to expect from The NHS's human servants.
Angiography: Techniques and Practices
The imaging technique used for visualizing the lumen of blood vessels and organs of the body is known as angiography. The imaging of the arteries and veins, and the chambers of the heart are primarily done using this technique. Traditionally, a radio-opaque contrast agent is injected into a blood vessel and imaged using X-ray guided technologies. The X-ray images are then displayed on a film or an image intensifier. The technique allows an interventional radiologist or cardiologist to evaluate the blood flow through a vessel as well as detect any stenosis inside the vessel. Angiography can be of different types, such as coronary angiography, fluorescein angiography, neuro-vascular angiography, peripheral angiography, microangiography and post mortem CT angiography. Each of these has a unique application in healthcare and forensic science. Coronary angiography allows the visualization of the blood in the coronary arteries, while microangiography allows the tiniest blood vessels to be imaged. Fluorescein angiography enables the back of the eye to be photographed and peripheral angiography is performed to detect blood flow anomalies in the feet and legs. This book outlines the techniques and applications of angiography in detail. The various advancements in angiography are glanced at and their applications are looked at in detail. It will serve as a valuable source of reference for graduate and post graduate students.

Diabetes Mellitus Und Knochen
Cancer Antigens and Immunological Factors in Breast Cancer Patients
Incidence of breast cancer is increasing worldwide and tumour markers are widely recognized as important tools in the evaluation and management of patients with cancer but additional biomarkers relevant to developing countries will provide additional support. This study evaluated the detection, diagnosis and prognostic potentials of biomarkers such as circulating immune complexes (CIC), cancer antigens (CA15-3 and CA 27.29), immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM and IgA) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1) in patients with malignant and benign breast tumours. A total of 42 treatment-na簿ve female patients that presented with breast tumour were prospectively studied (pre and post-treatment).Overall, tumour of all forms recorded significantly higher pre-treatment mean values for CA 15-3 and CA 27.29 which decreased after treatment. On the contrary, therapeutic interventions did not significantly affect the mean values for CIC, IgM, IgG, IgA and pro-inflammatory cytokines. CA 15-3 and CA 27.29 presented promising diagnostic and prognostic potentials in breast cancers. Immunoglobulins, CIC and pro-inflammatory cytokines appeared to be of limited diagnostic value in our environment.
KAP Study in T2DM Patients
A Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) study is a quantitative method (predefined questions formatted in standardized questionnaires) that provides access to quantitative and qualitative information. KAP surveys reveal misconceptions or misunderstandings that may represent obstacles to the activities that we would like to implement and potential barriers to behavior change. Note that a KAP study essentially records an "opinion" and is based on the "declarative" (i.e., statements). In other words, the KAP study reveals what was said, but there may be considerable gaps between what is said and what is done. A KAP study is a representative study of a specific population to collect information on what is known, believed, and done in relation to a particular. In most KAP studies, data are collected orally by an interviewer using a structured, standardized questionnaire. These data then can be analyzed quantitatively or qualitatively depending on the objectives and design of the study. A KAP study can be designed specifically to gather information about disease-related topics, but it may also include questions about general health practices and beliefs.
Palaeoepidemiology
How do we identify and measure human disease in the past? In the absence of soft tissue, paleoepidemiologists have developed ingenious ways of assessing illness and mortality in archaeological populations. In this volume, the key methods of epidemiology are outlined for non-specialists, showing the importance of studying prevalence over incidence, adjustments needed in studying past groups, how to compare studies, and the dangers of assessing occupation based upon bone evidence. A model for planning a proper paleoepidemiological study concludes the volume. Both as an introduction to epidemiology for archaeologists, and as a primer on archaeological analysis for epidemiologists, this book should serve the needs of both populations.
Under the Collar
Candid and conscientious, Under the Collar: Frank Conversations about Healing that Harms explores the practice of medicine with unconventional palpability: A lone hospitalist beseeches cessation of deleterious practices that further the ills of health care. Forget policies, protocols and patients. Healthcare providers and administrators nurture a toxic culture that cripples good medicine. Hurtling incident upon incident, this lone hospitalist illumes fallacies that erupt into bad medicine. Even she cannot evade scrutiny or ridicule.Based on over 15 years of actual clinical experiences as an Internist and Pediatrician, Under the Collar is a five-part conversation between a hospitalist and fellow practitioners, beginning with other hospitalists then moving onto other specialists, emergency physicians, nurses and administrators.Under the Collar is a hybrid work - an analytical memoir. This duality transcends the medical field as it challenges human proclivities inherent in any profession. The vignettes are medical, but the offenses are universal. Free of medical jargon and overly technical details, these straightforward stories relate to anyone facing difficult professional relationships.
Medical Image Processing
Medical image analysis using advanced fuzzy set theoretic techniques is an exciting and dynamic branch of image processing. Since the introduction of fuzzy set theory, there has been an explosion of interest in advanced fuzzy set theories--such as intuitionistic fuzzy and Type II fuzzy set--that represent uncertainty in a better way.Medical Image Processing: Advanced Fuzzy Set Theoretic Techniques deals with the application of intuitionistic fuzzy and Type II fuzzy set theories for medical image analysis. Designed for graduate and doctorate students, this higher-level text: Provides a brief introduction to advanced fuzzy set theory, fuzzy/intuitionistic fuzzy aggregation operators, and distance/similarity measures Covers medical image enhancement using advanced fuzzy sets, including MATLAB(R)-based examples to increase contrast of the images Describes intuitionistic fuzzy and Type II fuzzy thresholding techniques that separate different regions/leukocyte types/abnormal lesions Demonstrates the clustering of unwanted lesions/regions even in the presence of noise by applying intuitionistic fuzzy clustering Highlights the edges of poorly illuminated images and uses intuitionistic fuzzy edge detection to find the edges of different regions Defines fuzzy mathematical morphology and explores its application using the Lukasiewicz operator, t-norms, and t-conorms Medical Image Processing: Advanced Fuzzy Set Theoretic Techniques is useful not only for students, but also for teachers, engineers, scientists, and those interested in the field of medical image analysis. A basic knowledge of fuzzy set is required, along with a solid understanding of mathematics and image processing.
The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine
An expos矇 of the corruption of medicine by the pharmaceutical industry at every level, from exploiting the vulnerable destitute for drug testing, through manipulation of research data, to disease mongering and promoting drugs that do more harm than good. Authors, Professor Jon Jureidini and Dr Leemon McHenry, made critical contributions to exposing the scientific misconduct in two infamous trials of antidepressants. Ghostwritten publications of these trials were highly influential in prescriptions of paroxetine (Paxil) and citalopram (Celexa) in paediatric and adolescent depression, yet both trials (Glaxo Smith Kline's paroxetine study 329 and Forest Laboratories' citalopram study CIT-MD-18) seriously misrepresented the efficacy and safety data. The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine provides a detailed account of these studies and argues that medicine desperately needs to re-evaluate its relationship with the pharmaceutical industry. Without a basis for independent evaluation of the results of randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trials, there can be no confidence in evidence-based medicine. Science demands rigorous, critical examination and especially severe testing of hypotheses to function properly, but this is exactly what is lacking in academic medicine.
