Effects of PNF and de-Lorme and Watkins exercises on UE function and strength in stroke
Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Medicine - Neurology, Psychiatry, Addiction, grade: A, Virtual University of Pakistan, language: English, abstract: A Stroke, also known as cerebrovascular accident, is defined as rapid clinical signs of focal (or global) damage to brain function, along with symptoms that last longer than 24 hours or lead to death, with an apparent cause, mainly vascular origin. Globally, cerebrovascular damage is the second-biggest cause of death and the third-largest cause of disability. This ratio is 1 in 19 deaths. Stroke is a substantial source of injury in the long tenure and is more disabled than fatal. To compare the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation strengthening exercises with Delorme and Watkins exercises program to improve the upper extremity function and strength in chronic stroke patients. A randomized clinical trial was conducted on 20 chronic stroke patients, age of 50 to70 years. Clinical trial registry number was NCT05904795. Sample was collected from Shahida Islam Teaching Hospital Lodhran through convenience sampling technique and then patients were randomly allocated to 2 groups. Group A received PNF strengthening exercises training while Group B received Delorme and Watkins exercise program. Upper limb motor functions, and grip strength, were checked by The Barthel Index Scale and Handheld Dynamometer. SPSS version 25 used for statistical work. Independent sample t test was used for between group analysis, which shows that upper limb function assessment through Barthel index shows that pre-intervention score of PNF+PT group is 37.60 簣5.60, whilst DL&WE group is 35.80 簣2.78 and post-intervention scores of the PNF+PT group is 75.70 簣 5.53 and DL&WE group is 44.70 簣 4.52 correspondingly. Strength is checked by dynamometer and pre-intervention score of PNF+PT ii group is 76.80 簣19.43, whilst DL&WE group is 71.32 簣25.23. The post-intervention scores of the PNF+PT group is 92.73簣 18.48 and DL&WE gr

The Potential Healing of Cancer with P53 (Re)Activators
The purpose of this book is to propose a new strategy to heal human cancer completely with two entirely new drug compounds exploiting cancer's Warburg effect characterized by a defective mitochondrial aerobic respiration, substituted for by cytosolic aerobic fermentation/glycolysis of glucose into L-(+)-lactic acid. The two essentially new drugs P(op)T(est)162 and PT167 were discovered and developed by Andreas J. Kesel and internationally patented by PopTest Oncology LLC/Palisades Therapeutics. The in vitro antineoplastic highly efficacious drug PT167 represents a covalent combination of PT162 and PT166. The intermediate drug PT166 is an entirely new colchic(in)oid derivative synthesized from colchicine. PT166's structure was determined by X-ray crystallography. PT162 and PT167 were active in vitro versus 60 cancer cell lines of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Developmental Therapeutics Program (DTP) 60-cancer cell testing. PT162 and PT167 both not only stop the growth of cancer cells to 簣0% (cancerostatic effect), but completely kill all 60 cancer cells to a level of -100% (tumoricidal effect). PT162 and PT167 induce mitochondrial apoptosis (under cytochrome c release) in all cancer cells tested by (re)activating (in most cancers impaired) p53 function which results in a decrease of cancer's dysregulated cyclin D1 and an induction of the cell cycle-halting cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21Waf1/p21Cip1. It was found that compound 1 (PT162, NSC 796018), a new compound never synthesized before [according to Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS(R)) SciFinder(R) search], induced apoptosis in all cell lines of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Developmental Therapeutics Program (DTP) 60-cancer cell 5-dose testing, excluding leukemia cell lines, in the micromolar range of growth inhibition 50% (GI50). The author decided to merge compound 1 (PT162, NSC 796018) with the colchic(in)oid compound 2 (PT166, NSC 750423) which showed submicromolar GI50 in the NCI DTP 60-cancer c

The distal radial approach in interventional cardiology
The distal radial approach in interventional cardiology is an innovative and promising technique that uses an artery more superficial than the proximal radial artery primarily in coronary angiography and coronary angioplasty procedures, and perhaps in other types of procedure in the future. This technique offers several advantages over the conventional or femoral approach, including reduced risk of bleeding, vascular complications and pain, and essentially reduced risk of radial artery occlusion, as well as improved patient comfort and quality of life. However, this approach requires a longer learning curve and mastery of specific catheterization techniques, as it can sometimes be limited by anatomical difficulties or individual variations. The distal radial approach is an attractive option in interventional cardiology for eligible patients, which can improve clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.
Ocular sarcoidosis
Introduction: Ocular involvement in sarcoidosis accounts for 11.8% of uveitis cases. The aim of our work is to study the clinical characteristics of patients presenting with sarcoidosis uveitis. Patients and Methods Retrospective study in the ophthalmology department. Results We included 9 patients (8 women and 1 man), 4 patients presented with initial ocular manifestations revealing systemic involvement whereas the diagnosis of systemic sarcoidosis preceded ocular involvement in 5 patients. The mean age at first consultation was 49 years (29-58). Ophthalmological involvement was bilateral in all patients, 2 patients (22%) had both anterior and intermediate uveitis and 4 patients (44%) had posterior involvement which was classified as panuveitis with retinal vasculitis in 1 case, panuveitis with multifocal choroiditis in 2 cases and panuveitis with retinal vasculitis and multifocal choroiditis in 1 case. Conclusion: Ocular involvement in sarcoidosis is common, and should be investigated in the presence of bilateral granulomatous uveitis.
An Introduction to Clinical Trials
An Introduction to clinical trials is a concise step-by-step guide to the principles and practices of clinical trials for those studying clinical trials or new to working on one. Clinical trials are critical to the progress of medicine and improving healthcare, as they evaluate whether new treatments and interventions work. Prediction of Respiratory Motion for Radiotherapy Applications
Document from the year 2022 in the subject Medicine - Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, language: English, abstract: Respiratory motion exhibits non-linear and non-stationary behavior in nature and this has been a great hindrance to the accurate prediction of tumor in motion adaptive radiotherapy. Accurate prediction of respiratory motion and subsequent tracking of tumor has been a challenge due to its irregularities and intra-trace variabilities. In order to overcome this issue, prediction models can be trained by using neural networks. In this book, we explore the usage of random vector function link (RVFL) based neural networks to train the model in a very efficient way to achieve high accuracy in respiratory motion prediction. In RVFL, the direct link from input features to output layer acts as regularization to prevent the network from overfitting. Further, the non-iterative nature of RVFL due to closed form solution makes it computationally fast. The method is validated on a bench mark respiration dataset.
Cardio-renal syndrome
Kidney failure is detected in over a third of heart failure patients. The association of these two pathologies has a poor prognosis, as it often alters the therapeutic strategy recommended for heart failure patients, and increases the progressive damage to both organs. The kidney plays an important role in the pathophysiology of heart failure, and suffers the progressive consequences of the most common causes of heart failure: ventricular dysfunction, atherosclerosis, hypertension and diabetes. Because these patients with renal failure and heart failure are often excluded from controlled trials, little is known about their optimal treatment and recommended medications. The "cardio-renal" syndrome is a hot topic, with various studies highlighting its increasing frequency and therapeutic implications. It can have detrimental consequences, as it exacerbates the effects of neurohormonal stimulation, inflammation, oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction on the structure of the myocardium, vessels and kidneys.
Cardiovascular risk in patients with spondyloarthritis
Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is the second most common chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease after rheumatoid arthritis. This pathology has been evolving for several years, in terms of classification and nosology, as well as comorbidities, imaging and therapeutic advances. SpA encompasses different phenotypic forms (radiographic or non-radiographic axial, peripheral articular, enthesitic articular). Extra-articular manifestations (such as psoriasis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and anterior uveitis) help to better characterize the phenotype of the disease. Although the clinical presentation varies from patient to patient, there is growing evidence of premature cardiovascular risk and increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in this population. Two recent meta-analyses have suggested that the increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in SpA is related to early and accelerated atherosclerosis.

Compendium of Occupational Audiology
The text analyzes occupational health as a discipline concerned with promoting and maintaining the physical, mental and social well-being of workers in their work environment. There are different models and approaches used in the field of occupational health that are addressed in the text. The author approaches the subject from occupational audiology and culminates with a protocol of the various tests and recommended procedures, supported by evidence and concepts. The text is aimed at university students and practicing professionals .From a holistic viewpoint, the material focuses on identifying and eliminating occupational hazards that can cause injury or illness in workers. This model is based on hazard identification, risk assessment and the implementation of control measures to prevent accidents and promote a safe work environment.
Bipolar Disorder With Rapid Cycles
Rapid-cycling bipolar disorder (RCBD) is a particularly severe progressive modality. It is a poorly individualized entity. The profile of patients with this clinical specification is poorly defined, and therapeutic remedies are poorly codified. The aim of our work was to make a descriptive assessment of the sociodemographic, clinical and therapeutic characteristics of patients with TBCR, and to compare them with those of other patients with bipolar disorder. We conducted a retrospective, descriptive and comparative cross-sectional study of hospitalized patients divided into two groups: patients with rapid cycling and those without rapid cycling (TBNCR).Identifying patients at risk of developing rapid cycles and preventing their onset requires knowledge of the associated characteristics, and the adoption of a bio-psycho-social approach aimed at optimizing treatment and socio-professional reintegration.
Shaken Baby Syndrome
Since the early 2000s, a growing body of scientific studies in neuropathology, neurology, neurosurgery, biomechanics, statistics, criminology and psychology has cast doubt on the forensic reliability of medical determinations of Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS), more recently termed Abusive Head Trauma (AHT). Studies have increasingly documented that accidental short falls and a wide range of medical conditions, can cause the same symptoms and findings associated with this syndrome. Nevertheless, inaccurate diagnoses, unrealistic confidence expression, and wrongful convictions continue to this day. Bringing together contributions from a multidisciplinary expert panel of 32 professionals across 8 countries in 16 different specialties, this landmark book tackles the highly controversial topic of SBS, which lies at the intersection of medicine, science, and law. With comprehensive coverage across multiple disciplines, it explains the scientific evidence challenging SBS and advances efforts to evaluate how deaths and serious brain injuries in infants should be analysed and investigated.
The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine
An expose of the corruption of medicine by the pharmaceutical industry at every level, from exploiting the vulnerable destitute for drug testing, through manipulation of research data, to disease mongering and promoting drugs that do more harm than good.Authors, Professor Jon Jureidini and Dr Leemon McHenry, made critical contributions to exposing the scientific misconduct in two infamous trials of antidepressants. Ghostwritten publications of these trials were highly influential in prescriptions of paroxetine (Paxil) and citalopram (Celexa) in paediatric and adolescent depression, yet both trials (Glaxo Smith Kline's paroxetine study 329 and Forest Laboratories' citalopram study CIT-MD-18) seriously misrepresented the efficacy and safety data. The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine provides a detailed account of these studies and argues that medicine desperately needs to re-evaluate its relationship with the pharmaceutical industry. Without a basis for independent evaluation of the results of randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trials, there can be no confidence in evidence-based medicine.Science demands rigorous, critical examination and especially severe testing of hypotheses to function properly, but this is exactly what is lacking in academic medicine.'The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine is a brilliant expose of the negative influence of the global pharmaceutical industry on the integrity of medicine. Every medical student, doctor and patient should read this account of the ways in which medical evidence is distorted to meet the needs of Big Pharma for profits. Importantly the book points to ways in which medicine's independence can be reclaimed through improved governance and public funding.' - Professor Fran Baum
Prevalence of Transfusion-Transmitted Infections
This is a descriptive, observational, cross-sectional and retrospective study carried out in the Transfusion Transmissible Infections Laboratory (ITT) of the Hemotherapy and Immunohematology Unit of the General Hospital of Acute Diseases Juan. A. Fern獺ndez General Hospital belonging to the GCABA.The purpose of this work is to study the average prevalence of the mandatory screening diseases in blood and platelet donors, in accordance with the requirements of the National Blood Law and its regulations. This study, which was carried out on 44244 first-time donations made during the period 2006-2017, allows characterizing such population according to the variables sex, age, place of residence and origin according to birth of the Donors. This provides new health knowledge for the prevention and detection of TTI cases, leading to preventive interventions for new cases and access to specific treatment and follow-up for those affected. It is also useful for planning the necessary resources for this type of intervention.
Elastography
Elastography is a recent application of conventional ultrasound evaluation with recognized benefits in the field of malignancy risk assessment and disease evolution prediction. This book examines the use of this technique in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcohol-induced liver disease, liver fibrosis, chronic hepatitis, portal hypertension, and hepatic tumors. It also discusses the use of elastography in the pediatric population for thyroid disease and hepatic, or musculoskeletal diseases. Nonabdominal elastography applications are also presented, such as in breast pathology, thyroid diffuse and nodular disease, renal chronic disease, parathyroid hyperplasia and chronic musculoskeletal impairment.
