The distal radial approach in interventional cardiology
The distal radial approach in interventional cardiology is an innovative and promising technique that uses an artery more superficial than the proximal radial artery primarily in coronary angiography and coronary angioplasty procedures, and perhaps in other types of procedure in the future. This technique offers several advantages over the conventional or femoral approach, including reduced risk of bleeding, vascular complications and pain, and essentially reduced risk of radial artery occlusion, as well as improved patient comfort and quality of life. However, this approach requires a longer learning curve and mastery of specific catheterization techniques, as it can sometimes be limited by anatomical difficulties or individual variations. The distal radial approach is an attractive option in interventional cardiology for eligible patients, which can improve clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.
Ocular sarcoidosis
Introduction: Ocular involvement in sarcoidosis accounts for 11.8% of uveitis cases. The aim of our work is to study the clinical characteristics of patients presenting with sarcoidosis uveitis. Patients and Methods Retrospective study in the ophthalmology department. Results We included 9 patients (8 women and 1 man), 4 patients presented with initial ocular manifestations revealing systemic involvement whereas the diagnosis of systemic sarcoidosis preceded ocular involvement in 5 patients. The mean age at first consultation was 49 years (29-58). Ophthalmological involvement was bilateral in all patients, 2 patients (22%) had both anterior and intermediate uveitis and 4 patients (44%) had posterior involvement which was classified as panuveitis with retinal vasculitis in 1 case, panuveitis with multifocal choroiditis in 2 cases and panuveitis with retinal vasculitis and multifocal choroiditis in 1 case. Conclusion: Ocular involvement in sarcoidosis is common, and should be investigated in the presence of bilateral granulomatous uveitis.
An Introduction to Clinical Trials
An Introduction to clinical trials is a concise step-by-step guide to the principles and practices of clinical trials for those studying clinical trials or new to working on one. Clinical trials are critical to the progress of medicine and improving healthcare, as they evaluate whether new treatments and interventions work. They are also complex, multidisciplinary projects that integrate science, ethics, and legal requirements in the conduct of medical research. Starting with the research question, An Introduction to clinical trials explains study design, sample size determination, study set-up, study conduct, statistical analysis, and dissemination of the results. The book primarily focusses on randomised controlled trials as the "ultimate" clinical trial. It demystifies the terminology used in clinical trials research and presents the underlying scientific and statistical concepts. Real-life examples are used throughout to bring concepts to life. Written by an experienced medical statistician, An Introduction to clinical trials will benefit readers of all backgrounds, from postgraduate and medical students, trainee doctors and healthcare professionals to others working on clinical trials in a professional capacity. This book aims to help readers gain a fuller and more rounded understanding of clinical trials.
Brain Responses to Auditory Mismatch and Novelty Detection
Brain Responses to Auditory Mismatch and Novelty Detection: Predictive Coding from Cocktail Parties to Auditory-Related Disorders provides the connections between changes in the 'error-generating network' and disorder-specific changes while also exploring its diagnostic properties. The book allows the reader to appreciate the outcomes of predictive coding theory in fields of auditory streaming (including the cocktail-party effect) and psychiatric disorders with an auditory component. These include mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease, attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), schizophrenia and the cognitive aspects of Parkinson's disease. The book combines animal experiments on adaptation, human auditory evoked potentials, including MMN and their maturational, as well as aging aspects into one comprehensive resource.
Prediction of Respiratory Motion for Radiotherapy Applications
Document from the year 2022 in the subject Medicine - Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, language: English, abstract: Respiratory motion exhibits non-linear and non-stationary behavior in nature and this has been a great hindrance to the accurate prediction of tumor in motion adaptive radiotherapy. Accurate prediction of respiratory motion and subsequent tracking of tumor has been a challenge due to its irregularities and intra-trace variabilities. In order to overcome this issue, prediction models can be trained by using neural networks. In this book, we explore the usage of random vector function link (RVFL) based neural networks to train the model in a very efficient way to achieve high accuracy in respiratory motion prediction. In RVFL, the direct link from input features to output layer acts as regularization to prevent the network from overfitting. Further, the non-iterative nature of RVFL due to closed form solution makes it computationally fast. The method is validated on a bench mark respiration dataset.
Cardio-renal syndrome
Kidney failure is detected in over a third of heart failure patients. The association of these two pathologies has a poor prognosis, as it often alters the therapeutic strategy recommended for heart failure patients, and increases the progressive damage to both organs. The kidney plays an important role in the pathophysiology of heart failure, and suffers the progressive consequences of the most common causes of heart failure: ventricular dysfunction, atherosclerosis, hypertension and diabetes. Because these patients with renal failure and heart failure are often excluded from controlled trials, little is known about their optimal treatment and recommended medications. The "cardio-renal" syndrome is a hot topic, with various studies highlighting its increasing frequency and therapeutic implications. It can have detrimental consequences, as it exacerbates the effects of neurohormonal stimulation, inflammation, oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction on the structure of the myocardium, vessels and kidneys.
Cardiovascular risk in patients with spondyloarthritis
Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is the second most common chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease after rheumatoid arthritis. This pathology has been evolving for several years, in terms of classification and nosology, as well as comorbidities, imaging and therapeutic advances. SpA encompasses different phenotypic forms (radiographic or non-radiographic axial, peripheral articular, enthesitic articular). Extra-articular manifestations (such as psoriasis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and anterior uveitis) help to better characterize the phenotype of the disease. Although the clinical presentation varies from patient to patient, there is growing evidence of premature cardiovascular risk and increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in this population. Two recent meta-analyses have suggested that the increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in SpA is related to early and accelerated atherosclerosis.

The text is aimed at university students and practicing professionals .From a holistic viewpoint, the material focuses on identifying and eliminating occupational hazards that can cause injury or illness in workers. This model is based on hazard identification, risk assessment and the implementation of control measures to prevent accidents and promote a safe work environment.
Bipolar Disorder With Rapid Cycles
Rapid-cycling bipolar disorder (RCBD) is a particularly severe progressive modality. It is a poorly individualized entity. The profile of patients with this clinical specification is poorly defined, and therapeutic remedies are poorly codified. The aim of our work was to make a descriptive assessment of the sociodemographic, clinical and therapeutic characteristics of patients with TBCR, and to compare them with those of other patients with bipolar disorder. We conducted a retrospective, descriptive and comparative cross-sectional study of hospitalized patients divided into two groups: patients with rapid cycling and those without rapid cycling (TBNCR).Identifying patients at risk of developing rapid cycles and preventing their onset requires knowledge of the associated characteristics, and the adoption of a bio-psycho-social approach aimed at optimizing treatment and socio-professional reintegration.
Shaken Baby Syndrome
Since the early 2000s, a growing body of scientific studies in neuropathology, neurology, neurosurgery, biomechanics, statistics, criminology and psychology has cast doubt on the forensic reliability of medical determinations of Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS), more recently termed Abusive Head Trauma (AHT). Studies have increasingly documented that accidental short falls and a wide range of medical conditions, can cause the same symptoms and findings associated with this syndrome. Nevertheless, inaccurate diagnoses, unrealistic confidence expression, and wrongful convictions continue to this day. Bringing together contributions from a multidisciplinary expert panel of 32 professionals across 8 countries in 16 different specialties, this landmark book tackles the highly controversial topic of SBS, which lies at the intersection of medicine, science, and law. With comprehensive coverage across multiple disciplines, it explains the scientific evidence challenging SBS and advances efforts to evaluate how deaths and serious brain injuries in infants should be analysed and investigated.
The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine
An expose of the corruption of medicine by the pharmaceutical industry at every level, from exploiting the vulnerable destitute for drug testing, through manipulation of research data, to disease mongering and promoting drugs that do more harm than good.Authors, Professor Jon Jureidini and Dr Leemon McHenry, made critical contributions to exposing the scientific misconduct in two infamous trials of antidepressants. Ghostwritten publications of these trials were highly influential in prescriptions of paroxetine (Paxil) and citalopram (Celexa) in paediatric and adolescent depression, yet both trials (Glaxo Smith Kline's paroxetine study 329 and Forest Laboratories' citalopram study CIT-MD-18) seriously misrepresented the efficacy and safety data. The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine provides a detailed account of these studies and argues that medicine desperately needs to re-evaluate its relationship with the pharmaceutical industry. Without a basis for independent evaluation of the results of randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trials, there can be no confidence in evidence-based medicine.Science demands rigorous, critical examination and especially severe testing of hypotheses to function properly, but this is exactly what is lacking in academic medicine.'The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine is a brilliant expose of the negative influence of the global pharmaceutical industry on the integrity of medicine. Every medical student, doctor and patient should read this account of the ways in which medical evidence is distorted to meet the needs of Big Pharma for profits. Importantly the book points to ways in which medicine's independence can be reclaimed through improved governance and public funding.' - Professor Fran Baum
Prevalence of Transfusion-Transmitted Infections
This is a descriptive, observational, cross-sectional and retrospective study carried out in the Transfusion Transmissible Infections Laboratory (ITT) of the Hemotherapy and Immunohematology Unit of the General Hospital of Acute Diseases Juan. A. Fern獺ndez General Hospital belonging to the GCABA.The purpose of this work is to study the average prevalence of the mandatory screening diseases in blood and platelet donors, in accordance with the requirements of the National Blood Law and its regulations. This study, which was carried out on 44244 first-time donations made during the period 2006-2017, allows characterizing such population according to the variables sex, age, place of residence and origin according to birth of the Donors. This provides new health knowledge for the prevention and detection of TTI cases, leading to preventive interventions for new cases and access to specific treatment and follow-up for those affected. It is also useful for planning the necessary resources for this type of intervention.
Elastography
Elastography is a recent application of conventional ultrasound evaluation with recognized benefits in the field of malignancy risk assessment and disease evolution prediction. This book examines the use of this technique in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcohol-induced liver disease, liver fibrosis, chronic hepatitis, portal hypertension, and hepatic tumors. It also discusses the use of elastography in the pediatric population for thyroid disease and hepatic, or musculoskeletal diseases. Nonabdominal elastography applications are also presented, such as in breast pathology, thyroid diffuse and nodular disease, renal chronic disease, parathyroid hyperplasia and chronic musculoskeletal impairment.
Infectious Lesions of the Central Nervous System

It also presents microbiological, epidemiological and clinical data, with a particular focus on meningitis and encephalitis of different bacterial and viral aetiologies, influenza, COVID-19 and other viral and bacterial generalized infections. Further, the book explores the importance of mixed infections, including those in the late stages of HIV infection, as well as pathological changes in different age groups including newborns. A special chapter is devoted to the probable role of biological pathogens in noninfectious brain pathology.
The Spectrum of Imagination in Autism
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a chronic neuro-developmental disorder that affects the way a person relates to the environment and the people around. The person's capacity to build relationships with others is impaired and so is his/her ability to comprehend others' feelings, too. People with ASD manifest the classical triad of impairments (Wing, 1988) in socialization, communication, and imagination, which includes cognitive and behavioral inflexibility, and hence, affects the way they process information and view the world (Jordan, 1997). The main focus of this monograph is imagination (or imagining), especially how the condition of ASD impairs it, or how the impairment in imagination (or imagining) of a person with ASD affects his/her creativity and cognitive functionality. To understand imagination, the two key axes - (i) the spectrum of imagination and (ii) the types of imagination - will be explored and examined within the contexts of cognitive psychology and neuroscience.
Chronic Liver Diseases
Chronic liver diseases can progress to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Given their long silent progression, their diagnosis is still too late. New highly effective treatments are now available and others will become available very soon. The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception of chronic liver diseases by primary care physicians, as well as their current practice regarding the screening and management of these pathologies. The results of our study reveal an under-perception of chronic liver diseases by general practitioners. Indeed, they underestimate the prevalence and impact of these diseases and do not screen them optimally because they do not systematically target all populations at risk. Primary care physicians have expressed a willingness to be trained and to modify their practice, particularly through the use of simple blood tests for advanced fibrosis. This would allow earlier diagnosis of liver fibrosis and offer curative treatment of chronic liver disease before the advanced stages.
Myopia among Adults. Prevalence and Risk Factors
Academic Paper from the year 2023 in the subject Medicine - Ophthalmology, language: English, abstract: Today, with increasing level of education and living standard, the prevalence & severity of myopia appear to be an upward trend. Although the mechanisms of development and progression of myopia remain uncertain, environmental factors such as a higher level of education, more near-work, and lesser outdoor activities, could be associated with myopia. This study sought to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of myopia among KNUST students in Kumasi- Ghana. In this cross-sectional study, 307 Students of KNUST aged between 17 and 35 years were randomly recruited. Information on near work, indoor and outdoor activities and well as sleep duration and habits and use of visual aids was obtained using myopia risk factor questionnaire. Non-cycloplegic refraction was performed using autorefraction technique. Myopia was defined as spherical equivalent refraction (SER)
Portal vein diameter in cirrhotic and non cirrhotic patients. A sonographic comparison
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2022 in the subject Medicine - Internal Medicine, grade: A+, University of Lahore (University of Lahore), course: Msc Ultrasound, language: English, abstract: This publication aims to compare the portal vein diameter in cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients through ultrasound. Liver cirrhosis is a clinical condition in which the normal liver parenchyma is replaced with fibrosis in such a situation it becomes difficult for blood to easily pass through the Portohepatic venous system. Therefore, the portal vein becomes engorged and increases in diameter, while blood flow velocity reduces. Portal hypertension is clearly-defined as the rise of portal venous pressure, largely due to cirrhosis, which leads to increased hepatic vascular resistance and engorgement of the blood in the portal venous system. This disease may result in an array of disorders, like that the development of collateral vessels for returning of the blood to the right atrium with the potentiality for intestinal bleeding, development of ascites, encephalopathy, and formation of a 11 hyper-dynamic circulation involving peripheral and splanchnic vessels, related with the malfunction of kidneys, the heart, the lungs, and the brain.

Who Reporting System for Lung Cytopathology
WHO Reporting System for Lung Cytopathology is Volume 1 of this new series of reporting systems for cytopathology, which is a joint project of the International Academy of Cytology (IAC) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a specialized agency of the World Health Organization (WHO). The series includes a unique synthesis of the published evidence and the practice of cytopathology, and it is linked to the WHO Classification of Tumours series, now in its 5th edition. Cytopathologists look at tumours slightly differently than other specialists do, and there is a need for specialized reporting systems based on the key diagnostic cytopathological features of tumours, presented in standardized reports, within a hierarchical system of diagnostic categories. These categories must also be linked to diagnostic management recommendations to improve communication with clinicians and support patient care. And it is essential that these reporting systems be truly international, to serve the needs of patients worldwide in many differently medically resourced settings. These volumes are an essential tool for standardizing diagnostic cytopathology practice worldwide and will serve as a vehicle for the translation of cytopathology research into practice. The key diagnostic cytopathological features are listed for each tumour type under a defined set of diagnostic categories and described in precise, uniform language. These diagnostic criteria represent the first international consensus and are underpinned by evidence that has been evaluated and debated by experts in the field. Each lesion-specific section includes a dedicated subsection discussing the differential diagnosis of the cytopathological features that can be used throughout the world, including in low-resource settings, followed by a subsection describing the current best-practice application of ancillary testing (including next-generation sequencing) on cytopathology material. This volume: Prepared by about 60 authors and editors Contributors from around the world, reflecting an international expertise More than 300 high-quality images More than 1000 references
Oxford Clinical Guidelines: Newly Qualified Doctor
Medical practice in the modern age requires familiarity with clinical guidelines and standards, which are often published separately in long and discursive documents. This new addition to the Oxford Medical Publications summarises the key clinical practice guidelines which all final year medical students and Foundation Year 1 and 2 doctors should know when managing common conditions. Logically organised by medical specialty, the reader can quickly familiarise themselves with the key principles of diagnosis and management at the appropriate level for beginning a new rotation on the wards. Each guideline summary is tailored to the education level expected of doctors in their first two years of training, with clear instructions for when a more senior colleague should be called upon to help. Written by a team of junior doctors under the supervision of senior clinicians, this is the first resource to distil a range of guidelines from different locations (such as NICE, SIGN, and more) into an easily digestible format. Practical and user-friendly, with tables, diagrams, flowcharts, and algorithms to convey the key points quickly and easily, Oxford Clinical Guidelines is the new invaluable resource for every final year medical student and doctor at the beginning of their training.
How to Request a Test: A Clinician's Guide to the Interpretation and Evaluation of Medical Tests
Medical tests consume considerable resources and yet making requests is often left to the most junior members of the team. Medical schools often under prepare junior doctors for these tasks so they tend to request large numbers of tests to make sure 'all bases are covered' by the time a more senior colleague attends to the patient. Beginning with na簿ve questions such as 'what is a medical test?' and 'why do we perform tests?', the book also covers the evaluation of tests from a public health perspective and helps the readers to determine whether a test should be introduced into clinical care. By describing the basics of medical decision making based on probability thresholds, students will learn how to avoid unnecessary testing when results are unlikely to influence patient relevant decisions, and the pros and cons of using metrics such as sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values. Illustrated throughout with real life examples from multiple medical and surgical specialties, it concludes with a novel checklist for doctors to consider every time they think of requesting a test. Written by a clinician for clinicians, this book is ideal for medical students and junior doctors. It provides everything they need to know to become experts at requesting tests. It will support them in requesting the most appropriate and effective tests, and inform them on how to interpret results, improving patients' outcomes.

The Role of Biochemistry of Hormones & Heredity in Hereditary Diseases
To respond to specific stimulation in the body, hormones are secreted and the desired message is sent to the target cell and its connection is done through receptors on the target cell. The receptors of the target cells are proteins and can be membrane or intracellular. In other words, the connection is made in the same membrane or it goes inside the cell. These receptors are three dimensional and act like locks and keys by binding to hormones. After connecting, it executes the command it had in that cell and by performing new reactions, it causes changes in the cells. Hormones either control a specific part of the body or are in charge of general control. According to their type, hormones are transported in the blood free or bound with specific proteins. For example, peptide hormones are transported in a soluble form in plasma, and steroid and thyroid hormones are transferred in connection with plasma proteins. Hormones are inactive when they are attached to these proteins. These hormones are transferred in the blood at a slower rate and remain in the blood for a long time.

MRCP(UK) and MRCP(I) Part I Best of Fives
Volume I assesses the candidates' knowledge in cardiology, pulmonology, renal medicine (as well as acid-base balance, electrolytes disturbances, and urology), gastrointestinal medicine and hepatology, and finally neurology (as well as stroke medicine, medical ophthalmology, and psychiatry). Medicine is an ever-changing branch. The COVID-19 global crisis has reformatted our concepts and perspectives on the understanding of novel diseases and their treatment, including vaccinations. During the last decade, there has been a robust revolution in smartphones and the internet access industry, and accordingly, both have been reflected in the ways in which postgraduate trainees get their information and study. My previous books, "Get Through MRCP Part I; BOFs" (published by the Royal Society of Medicine Press in London, 2008), "Mock Papers for MRCPI part I, 2nd Edition" (published by Lulu Press, Inc., USA, 2016), and "Self-Assessment: 650 BOFs for MRCP(UK) and MRCP(I) Part I" (published by Lulu Press, Inc., USA, 2017) have already covered most of the classical examination scenarios and themes. Combined, they create a question bank of approximately 1600 questions. In writing this book, I have tried to focus on the most important updates in medicine that have been emerging during the past decade; novel diseases, novel investigations, and newly approved medications. Needless to say, COVID-19 and its SARS-CoV-2 will be encountered in each chapter, in addition to occupying a unique position in the chapter on infectious diseases. The other aspect that I think is very crucial to tackle is women's health and pregnancy. Once again, such a topic has been addressed in each and every chapter. There are no separate chapters for geriatrics, clinical sciences, and pharmacology (including therapeutics and toxicology); their questions have been distributed throughout the book's chapters. Each answer is followed by an explanation and a reference (source) and/or additional (further) reading. In this way, you can go there; skim the whole subject if you are interested to get more information. Good luck with your career and exams!

On the Natural Faculties
Galen of Pergamon, was a prominent Roman physician, surgeon and philosopher. The most accomplished of all medical researchers of antiquity, Galen contributed greatly to the understanding of numerous scientific disciplines, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and neurology, as well as philosophy and logic. Galen's understanding of anatomy and medicine was principally influenced by the then current theory of humorism, as advanced by many ancient Greek physicians such as Hippocrates. His theories dominated and influenced Western medical science for more than 1,300 years. Medical students continued to study Galen's writings until well into the 19th century. Galen conducted many nerve ligation experiments that supported the theory, which is still accepted today that the brain controls all the motions of the muscles by means of the cranial and peripheral nervous systems.

Association of hyperbilirubinemia, leukocyte count and CRP value in the early clinical diagnosis of complicated and non-complicated appendicitis
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2018 in the subject Medicine - Diagnostics, grade: 10, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje (Medical faculty), language: English, abstract: This study aims to establish the role of hyperbilirubinemia as a laboratory marker in prediction of acute appendicitis in the early diagnosis and complicated appendicitis, as well as to compare laboratory markers such is C - reactive protein, Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) and WBC together with Alvarado scoring model. Even though appendicitis has been known since two centuries ago, acute appendicitis presents a diagnostic challenge for the majority of general surgeons during their work, regardless of several diagnostic modalities applied. This is a cross-sectional study, conducted in the University Clinical Center of Prishtina in the Department of Abdominal Surgery and in General Hospital of Mitrovica. The prospective data collection included 201 patients admitted in the emergency ward with suspicion for acute appendicitis, in which the preoperative diagnosis of acute appendicitis was established and appendectomy was performed, during the period from September 2016 up to October 2017.
