Chemical vs. Surgical Castration

2025/05/23 出版

This book compares the efficacy of chemical and surgical castration on the growth performance and carcass characteristics of male LWY pigs in Mizoram. Twenty-four LWY pigs were divided into three groups (C, T1, T2) and castrated at 2 months old. Their growth, feed intake, testicular measurements, testosterone levels, and carcass characteristics were monitored until slaughter at 8 months. Group T1 showed significantly higher body weight and average daily gain (ADG) compared to C and T2. Feed conversion efficiency (FCE) was better in T1, while chemical castration (T2) resulted in a higher dressing percentage than surgical castration. Sensory evaluation found no significant differences. The study concludes that chemical castration could be a viable alternative to surgical castration.

Recent Knowledge on Tumors in Ruminants

2025/05/23 出版

The most common tumors in ruminants are lymphoma, leukemia, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Some of the more common tumors, such as lymphoma and squamous cell carcinoma, are better documented. On the other hand, ocular squamous cell carcinoma manifests as an infiltrating eyelid mass in adult cattle with poor periocular pigmentation. Similarly, juvenile and dermal forms of LBS affect young dairy cows with polyadenomegaly or skin nodules. However, other tumor processes, related to the organ involved in the primary tumor or metastases, are also possible. Histological examination is the microscopic examination of tissues to study the appearance of cells and tissues in order to diagnose tumors such as other diseases. It is an important tool for the diagnosis of cancer. It is therefore the confirmatory examination of tumors. Usually, immunohistochemistry is the most common histological examination. Necropsy can be used to diagnose tumors. It is a post-mortem examination of an animal to determine the cause of death or assess pathological conditions. It is the ultimate diagnostic fate of most experimental animals.

Epizootics - Outbreaks of Animal Disease

Intechopen 出版
2025/05/08 出版

When diseases occur in a human population at higher than expected levels, those diseases are said to be "epidemic." Animals also experience outbreaks at levels greater than expected, and when that happens, it is called "epizootic". There have been several very large epizootics in recent years, with one of the biggest being the West Nile virus expansion into the Americas. This caused significant bird mortality, and it expanded into the human population as well. The effect of epizootics on human health is, therefore, of great importance. Still, epizootics can be extremely important even if humans are unaffected. This book describes several recent epizootics, discusses why they occurred, and what kind of response may be necessary.

Sustainable Honey Bee Breeding: A Scientific Guide for Future Beekeeping

Springer 出版
2025/04/22 出版

This book is the result of collaborative efforts which have taken place over the past 20 years within the COLOSS network, when the factor "bee origin" was first put into the equation of factors involved in colony losses. It aims to provide beekeepers, apicultural students, and beekeeping enthusiasts with the scientific background necessary to understand these new ideas, so that future beekeeping may be based on existing "local" bee genotypes which can then be improved by selective breeding. The work is divided into two parts. The first section briefly tells the story of honey bees, their origins and their long association with humans, the development of bee breeding and selection and finally the scientific and anecdotal evidence that show that local bees are better for the environment and for beekeeping itself. The second part provides a practical guide to techniques for sustainable bee breeding and selection, ranging from setting up performance testing, to the cost of selection, through methods for rearing queens and making selection decisions, including many aspects related to the control of the very special mating biology of the honey bee. Authored by an expert team of more than 30 scientists, extension specialists and beekeepers from 16 countries around the world, the present synopsis provides all theoretical and practical aspects of honey bee breeding. It is rich in figures and vivid case studies, including hands-on interviews with bee breeders and other stakeholders. Final, a supplementary video can be accessed online as well as directly from the print book; simply download the free Springer Nature More Media App and scan the link in the accompanying figure caption.

Biosecurity for Livestock Diseases in Europe

Cabi 出版
2025/04/21 出版

Biosecurity practices can help prevent the introduction and spread of disease, promoting better animal health and welfare, human health, food safety, and the economic benefits of livestock production. Stemming from a joint initiative between the Biosecure project which brought together 17 partners across 12 European countries, and DISCONTOOLS, the research gap database in animal health, this book provides valuable background information which can help to better understand and prioritize biosecurity measures. Driven by an evidence-based and cost-effective approach to biosecurity, it is divided into two sections covering endemic diseases typically present within most countries, and epidemic diseases with the potential for large scale outbreaks. Through a series of disease entries, it: - introduces the diseases of most relevance for the European context;- reviews our current understanding of biosecurity throughout the livestock production chain, and across the principal terrestrial animal species farmed within Europe: poultry, swine, cattle, and small ruminants;- covers the prevalence, risk factors, transmission routes, current control measures and biosecurity, and data for transmission modelling for each disease.By summarizing current knowledge on a range of diseases, this book forms both a useful resource for researchers and professionals in animal disease prevention, and a starting off point for identifying information gaps and requirements for future research.

Livestock Immunity to Ticks

Cabi 出版
2025/04/02 出版

As arthropod ectoparasites, ticks threaten the wellbeing of the animals whose habitat they share. They cause skin damage from their bite wounds, secrete toxins, transmit pathogens, and can also induce allergic reactions and infected wounds. For more than a century, domestic animals have undergone chemical tick treatment as part of their husbandry routine. However, this reliance on chemicals is non-sustainable, and ignores the existence of other possible avenues of tick management. Covering recent developments in the field, this book considers avenues such as: - Managing infestations through both natural tick control and human intervention - Innate tick resistance - Naturally acquired adaptive immunity - Technological developments and successes such as vaccination schemes The book also takes into consideration the barriers any one of these solutions may face on the road to commercialization. Livestock Immunity to Ticks provides a comprehensive and up-to-date resource for researchers and students of immunology, parasitology and entomology.
