Midwives in History and Society
Originally published in 1986, this book examines the history of midwifery, concentrating on 19th and 20th Century Britain. The authors emphasize the effects of specialization and professionalization upon midwifery and also the influence of male authority and interest group politics. The evolution of the educated qualified midwife of the 20th Century is recorded, leading up to the ongoing debates about high technology birth vis-?-vis natural birth and home deliveries.

Nurses of Los Angeles
Nurses of Los Angeles: Uncapping the Mystery details the leaders, the schools, and the lives of nurses who worked daily to achieve their goals. More than 450 color photographs, from 1858 to 2024, accompany each historical story and biography as it is told. When California became a state in 1850, the treeless basin named Los Angeles had no newspapers, colleges, libraries, or public schools. Residents obtained water from open canals in front of their homes that were used for bathing and dumping trash. Cows grazed in open fields. Injured people lay unattended in squalor, and orphans roamed the streets for handouts. In 1855, Bishop Thaddeus Amat wrote to Spain, France, and the East Coast of the United States to ask officials for help in caring for the needy residents and orphans. The Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul responded and sent six nurse nuns from Maryland. Those six nurses opened the first Los Angeles hospital in 1857--the only hospital until the county finally built one in 1878.In the early 1900s, people flocked to Los Angeles for the health benefits. Sanitariums and sanatoriums proliferated: many hoped to cure their tuberculosis; some just wanted rest and relaxation in the perfect climate and fresh sea air. As the city expanded, more hospitals opened. Nurses organized schools of Nursing within the hospitals to meet the needs of the community. They practiced Public Health Nursing in depressed areas of the city, often populated by immigrants who could not afford health care. They succeeded in becoming the first city in the U.S. to convince the County to pay a salary for a Public Health Nurse. They became expert housing inspectors during their patient visits. Nurses thrived and continued to expand their educational methods. They moved from a hospital apprentice model to the breadth of college degrees available to other professions. They created advanced clinicians: nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and nurse anesthetists. None of this came easily; they worked diligently to fight for a place in society they knew they deserved.
People's knowledge of first aid
The topic of first aid or pre-hospital care is frequently found in national and international literature. However, in most cases it is related to the knowledge, skills or training of health professionals or students and is rarely addressed to other audiences. The lay population, often neglected by academics in this field, is the one that frequently attends emergency and disaster situations and provides first aid, either out of an instinctive desire to help their neighbour or out of necessity caused by the delay in the arrival of first aid services due to bureaucratic problems and travel. The need for first aid training is also considered necessary only for health professionals, especially in emergency and urgent care services. However, recent studies emphasise the importance of teaching other people from different age groups through health education in order to reduce injuries and save lives in emergency situations that are always, or almost always, unpredictable.

Health Care Finance, Economics, and Policy for Nurses
Delivers knowledge to support a lifetime of informed, impactful advocacy This concise, practical text---written for all nursing roles and levels of experience--synthesizes the complexities of health economics, finance, payment, ethics, and civic responsibility into an easy-to-understand, non-partisan guide to health policy and activism. It is distinguished from similar texts by its discussion of economic and financial dynamics in health care as a precursor to policy and advocacy in nursing. In addition to being revised and updated, the book includes substantially expanded material on artificial intelligence and large language platforms; information, quality, safety and costs; health equity; civics; laws, administrative rules and Supreme Court decisions; nurses on boards; Medicare Advantage and Part D, outpatient pharmaceuticals; the impact of mergers and acquisitions on nurses' salaries and career opportunities; and an entirely new chapter on the nursing workforce. Written by a health economics and policy expert, dean, and award-winning teacher recognized as a "policy luminary" by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the resource discusses in depth the relationship between nursing and health care economics. It traces the history of our health care system from the early 1900s through today and discusses the intersection of ethics and economics to provide nurses with the tools to thoughtfully analyze dilemmas arising from today's focus on the bottom line. Using a step-by-step skill-building guide, the book describes--with the support of illustrative case--how to use economic principles to shape organizations and public policy. It breaks down complex financial principles to facilitate understanding for nurses with no prior knowledge of this discipline. Also included is updated information on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and key subsequent legislation and Supreme Court decisions. Additionally, the book is compatible with online teaching and coursework. Faculty resources include PowerPoint slides, a test bank, comprehensive review questions and sample syllabi. Re-significations and perspectives of the lived
In this book, we cover the family experience of caring for a chronically ill child with Schinzel-Giedion syndrome (SSG), a very rare, congenital and neurodegenerative disease. This is a comprehensive study carried out with the family of Bruno and J矇ssica, the parents of baby Ricardo. Aware of the short life expectancy imposed by SSG, the family takes advantage of and maximises their son's time to live, both in the sense of extending it as much as possible and offering the best care 'of, in and for' life. We have grasped a notion of care that encompasses and integrates the needs of the beginning of human life, flowing and spreading through care during illness. We invite the reader to think of time as a confluence in which the past and future overlap the present, which is an inexhaustible source of the lived, through which life gushes incessantly. Health services and professionals need to rethink the protocol and rigidly formalised times that, as a rule, guide their actions and the organisation of care processes, in an effort to embrace the temporality of living and caring for children with other normalities.
Ageing and quality of life in the community
The process of population ageing has given rise to a number of debates about the new paths of health policy for the elderly. All the changes related to old age are determining factors for the vulnerability of these individuals in terms of the risks to their health, as well as their Quality of Life (QoL). This is directly related to emotional, cognitive, psychological and functional aspects. This book presents the results relating to the profile of community-dwelling elderly people registered with the Primary Health Care service in two municipalities in the north-east of Brazil. It also discusses the association between the sociodemographic profile of community-dwelling elderly people and aspects of their Quality of Life. Carried out through a rich bibliographical review, the discussion of the subject relates the results of the work to important findings from national and international research, published in highly relevant journals. This book is therefore aimed at health professionals in Primary Health Care, as well as scholars of ageing and the general public, given its scope.

Breastfeeding
This book examines the importance of nursing care in breastfeeding and its contributions to the health of mother and baby. The study aimed to carry out a systematic review of the benefits of nursing care in breastfeeding. The method chosen was a systematic review, using databases: MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online), BNDEF (Nursing Database) and LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature). The descriptors were chosen according to DeCS (Health Sciences Descriptors) and MeSH (Medical Subject Headings). In accordance with the descriptors, Boolean operators were used to combine the terms in the databases. Fourteen articles were included in this study. The results indicate that continuing education and emotional support are fundamental to successful breastfeeding, suggesting the need for more robust health policies that promote evidence-based practices. The paper concludes that nursing care not only facilitates the practice of breastfeeding, but also contributes significantly to maternal and child well-being.
