The impact of social media use on pre-university students’ mental health and academic achievement
"Education is not the amount of information that we put into your brain and runs riot there, undigested all your life. We must have life building, man making, and character making assimilation of ideas." -Swami Vivekananda. Education is the overall development of all the innate capacities of a child that is essential for the growth and development of the individual and the society. Although spirituality was the base for ancient Indian education, there was equal importance to prepare the child for the real worldly life. "Education is an ongoing process of improving knowledge and skills, and is also an exceptional tool in bringing about personal development and building relationships among individuals, groups and nations"-reports the international commission on education for the twenty-first century. The ultimate aim of imparting education is to promote humanity by making an individual to grow self-sufficient in fulfilling his/her needs as well as strive to contribute for the betterment of the 'global village' with a healthy mindset. The application of the principles of educational philosophy, educational psychology and applying modern technology in the field of education does help achieve this aim. In addition, it is important to ensure that use of the latest forms of information and communication technology does not lead to addiction or over dependency on technology that may have detrimental effects on its users' physical and mental health.

Bully Market
A "riveting and powerful" (Gretchen Carlson, cofounder of Lift Our Voices) insider's account on Wall Street where greed coupled with misogyny and discrimination enforces a culture of exclusion in the upper echelons of Goldman Sachs. Jamie Fiore Higgins became one of the few women at the highest ranks of Goldman Sachs. Spurred on by the obligation she felt to her working-class immigrant family, she rose through the ranks and saw it all: out-of-control, lavish parties flowing with never-ending drinks; affairs flouted in the office; rampant drug use; and most pervasively, a discriminatory culture that seemed designed to hold back the few women and people of color employed at the company. Despite Goldman Sachs having the right talking points and statistics, Fiore Higgins soon realized that these provided a veneer to cover up what she found to be an abusive culture. Her "engrossing" (Julie Battilana and Tiziana Casciaro, authors of Power, for All) account is one filled with shocking stories of harassment and jaw-dropping tales of exclusionary behavior: when she was told she only got promoted because she is a woman; when her coworkers mooed at her after she pumped for her fourth child, defying the superior who had advised her not to breastfeed; or when a male boss used a racial epithet in front of her, other colleagues, and clients without any repercussions. Bully Market "exposes the #MeToo movement's unfinished work on Wall Street" (Meighan Stone, author of Awakening: #MeToo and the Global Fight for Women's Rights) sounds the alarm on the culture of finance and corporate America, while offering clear, actionable ideas for creating a fairer workplace. Both a revealing, extraordinary look at the industry and a top Wall Streeter's explosive personal story, Bully Market is an essential account of one woman's experience in a flawed system that speaks to the challenge and urgency for change.
Handbook For Light Ambassadors
The authors conduct an analysis of the old world and provide guidance for individuals and groups who want to participate in the creation of a new and fair world. Examples given illustrate how new projects may contribute to a life of enjoyment and respect for nature. The examples also show that a large number of individuals are already on the way to creating a fair and just world. Sources of alternative information are provided.
Burn Rate
When Mick Theebs was younger, stupider, and greedier, he made the unwise decision to work with a start-up founded by an old high school classmate. After some promising initial success, the decision proved to be an unmitigated disaster with the company being undermined by lies, drugs, and incompetence. This is a true story about how the blind ambition, unchecked ego, and naked avarice that is the fabric of start-up culture can lead to ruin.
Creating a Nonviolent Culture in a Modern Organization
Increasing violence amongst youth in society, burn-out as a widespread disease, and scandals in companies are only some of the headlines which appear regularly in the news media. Politics scarcely seems to have any success in fighting violence and injustice in society and the world. The thesis suggests that people do not have to wait for a savior such as a politician but that everyone can contribute to a less violent, more peaceful, and just world. It will be demonstrated that organizations have an enormous influence on society and this book deals with the possibilities which an organization has to contribute to a less violent culture. By the term "organization" all forms of organized groups of people who come together for a certain purpose are meant, for example, schools, clubs, public social aids, and others, while we mainly concentrate on companies in our research. The intention is to focus particularly on the issues related to the theme of creating a nonviolent culture in the workplace. In the first part on culture, we deal with several questions regarding culture, including such fundamental questions as What is organizational culture? What are the dimensions of culture? and is it possible to in- fluence it and if yes, how does it work? In the second part, we take a look at the terms violence and nonviolence, and a survey of how these aspects occur in society and organizations is made. The third part is the largest and deals with the qualities of leadership and with the organizational conditions which are necessary to create a nonviolent culture. We hope it will become clearer to the reader that nonviolence is not a strategy or a formula to be used. It can appear very different in different situations. There are component elements that can promote it and there are certain principles that cannot be violated if one wishes to establish true nonviolence. Nevertheless, there is no one patent formula nor one exclusively correct way of creating a nonviolent culture. It requires considerable creativity and endurance to create it and can take a variety of forms.

metaphysics of goodness
What is it for something to be good? Aristotelian theory contends that to be good is to be good as a member of one's kind, and so there are varying standards of goodness depending on whether something is a squirrel, human, or whatever kind. Appearing in several contemporary versions,1 the theory has the advantage of easily explaining, for instance, why having deep, broad roots is a measure of excellence for the oak tree but not for the squirrel, which has a different standard of goodness. Michael Thompson's and Philippa Foot's version of the Aristotelian account offers to give content to the kind-based standards, using the very conception of the kind of lifeform that an individual organism bears. It is perhaps a little noticed feature of Foot's project, in particular, that it aims to provide more than just a kind-relative account, but seeks an exhaustive account of something's goodness. She concludes, in effect, that something's goodness admits of only the kind-based sort. What follows, with respect to being a good individual, is that a good individual just is good of a kind (is a good oak, good squirrel, etc.) Accordingly, an individual's goodness obtains solely in virtue of its satisfying kind-based standards. However, her account faces an important challenge-there are at least some metaphysically possible things that can satisfy their kind-relative standards, but we plausibly judge them to be bad when they do. Thus, a thing's goodness does not appear to obtain solely in virtue of meeting kind-based standards, and so a thing's goodness is not captured merely by Foot's account. In this sense, such possible things are counterexamples to Foot's neo-Aristotelian account. The focus of my discussion will be Foot's account and any Aristotelian theory similar to hers where kind-relative standards implicitly offer an exhaustive account of something's goodness. As I later explain, I suspect that many neoAristotelian theories would be similar to Foot's in this respect, otherwise they would leave the door open also to a sort of co-existent, kind-independent account of a thing's goodness. So, although there may be Aristotelian theories not similar to Foot's in this regard, I will henceforth use 'the Aristotelian account' to refer to all Aristotelian theories offering an exhaustive account of goodness, and will take Foot's account as an important representative.
Show the Value of What You Do
By the winners of the Association for Talent Development's 2022 Thought Leader award! Prove your effectiveness to anyone-and achieve professional success-by adopting the same ROI methods and metrics that leading companies use. In an era of evidence-based inquiry, people need to be able to demonstrate the value of their projects credibly. But how do you do that when there isn't an obvious measure connected to the project, like increased sales? In their new book Patti and Jack Phillips, the cofounders of ROI Institute, show how you can adopt the same methodology used by more than 6,000 organizations in seventy countries to evaluate large institutional initiatives. By following their six-step process, you can build a case for any project, process, or intervention, even so-called soft programs. For example, the first case study in the book involves successfully demonstrating the effectiveness of chaplaincy in an intensive care unit. The authors explain how to link your project to a meaningful business outcome, make sure your project will actually influence that outcome, identify metrics that will show if you're making progress, collect and analyze data, and use the results to build support. This book includes extensive examples from a wide range of organizations: businesses, nonprofits, schools, law enforcement, and more. It provides diagnostic tools and supportive practices and even offers advice on how to find a positive interpretation for results that don't conform to your anticipated outcome. Answering the question Is it worth it? defines the ultimate value of any project. Using the methodology this book presents will keep your work relevant, your career on track, and your organization healthy.

These awards will celebrate substantial business and management research that is informing policy, business, and third sector practices. https: //www.managers.org.uk/knowledge-and-insights/article/management-publication-of-the-year-2024/ Bridging the gap between business and business schools: fulfilling potential or thwarted ambition. The Engaged Business School is a road map to unlocking the potential between business and business schools at a time when it really matters: responding to a global, economic and social recovery. It is a call for academics and businesses to come together and realise the potential that is so often unfulfilled. On a practical level it presents the idea of an engaged business school using three tools - a model, a framework, and a process. The model shows how success factors are interconnected in order to bring engagement to life. The framework provides a structure to clarify the building blocks for effective engagement. Finally, the process identifies the steps and stages which will need to be considered to translate the model and framework into action. Aimed at a dual audience of business schools and businesses, Sturgess argues that there is a need for the academic and business communities to join together and build an engaged business school. Too much of the debate about business school relevance has taken place in academia. The Engaged Business School starts with business needs and then unites the two perspectives together.

The Power Of Purpose
We have been conditioned in a society where work primarily ensures survival and grants status. Vocation is not really an aspect worth thinking about in the current world of work. And even when we have clarity about what we burn for, what we really want to do, most people seeking their calling remain in the established model. Why do we so freely trade freedom and fulfilment for apparent security? Why have we lost our courage? Patrizia Patz's book provides answers. It explores the feasibility between desire and reality, provides attractive possibilities to get on the track of our passions and talents and to realise a good life - with a job that also pays the bills. For this to succeed, we need a new way of thinking and a little courage to leave the pre-drawn mainstream career path and expand our own comfort zone. The first steps are simple: get clear about what you like to do and what you are passionate about. Free yourself from expectations that you should live up to. Take courage and trust in th
Two Rivers
In the fall of 2018, Shery Roussarie and Kelly Macken-Marble, CEOs of two competing health care companies, met for the first time. The energy generated by their like-mindedness in creating a managed care network sparked a two-year journey of collaboration that took their small community by surprise ... and by storm. While maintaining their separate companies, these two inspirational women purchased a hospital and merged, creating a safe, reliable place people could come to for health care services. Along the way, they encountered significant resistance and trials from the very medical organizations keeping theirs alive. The hospital systems that had instantly minimized the opportunities to jointly collaborate and threatened retribution for collaboration were rocked when the two women's plans for more accessible health care came to fruition. Breaking the norms of gender, competition, and politics in leadership, Shery and Kelly pushed traditions aside and accomplished the impossible through collaboration.

An Introduction to Latent Class Analysis
This book provides methods and applications of latent class analysis, and the following topics are taken up in the focus of discussion: basic latent structure models in a framework of generalized linear models, exploratory latent class analysis, latent class analysis with ordered latent classes, a latent class model approach for analyzing learning structures, the latent Markov analysis for longitudinal data, and path analysis with latent class models. The maximum likelihood estimation procedures for latent class models are constructed via the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm, and along with it, latent profile and latent trait models are also treated. Entropy-based discussions for latent class models are given as advanced approaches, for example, comparison of latent classes in a latent class cluster model, assessing latent class models, path analysis, and so on. In observing human behaviors and responses to various stimuli and test items, it is valid to assume they are dominated by certain factors. This book plays a significant role in introducing latent structure analysis to not only young researchers and students studying behavioral sciences, but also to those investigating other fields of scientific research.

Having come from Moldova's early days of democracy, Serguei Melnik has always thrived on adversity, studying hard and chasing opportunities. While in law school, Serguei made a promise that he would hike Mount Kilimanjaro with his friend when they'd earned $1 million. That mountain became a symbol for every challenge Serguei would face, from fraudulent company partners to arriving poor in the US to the challenge of growing his family. Through all of these trials and successes, Serguei held tight to his integrity and followed his intuition to achieve personal and professional success. Serguei demonstrates that a person can not just survive, but thrive if they hold tight to their values and push through personal and professional roadblocks to enjoy the rewards at the finish line. You can follow the verses of Vladimir Vysotsky in "Song About a Friend." Climbing to the business pinnacle is the same as climbing to the mountain summit: the true colors of your companion can and will come through: "If he didn't complain or whineClenching teeth through entire climbWhen you suddenly slipped and fellHis hands fought with the rope but heldIf he acted as if at warAt the summit he swayed with aweDoesn't matter what he might seemYou can place all your trust in him."

The Dharma and Socially Engaged Buddhist Economics
This book defends and articulates an "Engaged Buddhist" approach to economics as a response to the destructive effects of global capitalism. The author posits that Buddhist understandings of the distortions of greed, aversion, and ignorance can be read to apply not only to mental states but also to socio-political ones, and that such a reading suggests rational responses to current social and environmental challenges. The book proposes that we engage both "inner and outer" modes of transformation through which to free ourselves from our current human-made, dysfunctional systems: the former, by examining the workings of our own minds, the latter by criticizing and reforming our economic systems. Since traditional Buddhism provides few sources to build a Buddhist economic vision, this work brings together Buddhist notions of skillful practice, John Dewey's pragmatic principles for social provisioning, and institutional economics. The author provides two case studies for experiments in Buddhist-based socioeconomic policies, Thailand and Bhutan. Of special interest is the implied parallel between worldviews emerging from modern socially-engaged Buddhism and Dewey's notion of a human existential drive to shape the world in collectively beneficial ways.

Closing the Confidence Gap: Boost Your Peace, Your Potential, and Your Paycheck
What would you do if you had a little more confidence? Would you take the next step in your career, assume more leading roles, set boundaries, ask for a raise, or even run for office? Doubt and imposter feelings are a big reason women hold back and play small instead of going for what they truly desire at work. Coupled with the systemic gender equity issues and the resulting burnout that plagues women in the workplace today, it's no wonder that so many women are undervaluing themselves and their abilities. These doubtful thoughts and systemic issues are expensive--they cost women (and their organizations) their peace, their potential, and their paychecks. To close the confidence gap and see more women showing up in their full potential at work, we need more women leaders at the top of organizations. Closing the Confidence Gap will show you how to advance with confidence, despite the systemic issues that women face every day at work. You'll hear deeply personal stories and walk away with practical tools to show you how to claim your role as a confident leader. It's time to own who you are, trust yourself, and take your bravest next step.
Deep Learning and Scientific Computing with R Torch
torch is an R port of PyTorch, one of the two most-employed deep learning frameworks in industry and research. It is also an excellent tool to use in scientific computations. It is written entirely in R and C/C++.Though still "young" as a project, R torch already has a vibrant community of users and developers. Experience shows that torch users come from a broad range of different backgrounds. This book aims to be useful to (almost) everyone. Globally speaking, its purposes are threefold: Provide a thorough introduction to torch basics - both by carefully explaining underlying concepts and ideas, and showing enough examples for the reader to become "fluent" in torch Again with a focus on conceptual explanation, show how to use torch in deep-learning applications, ranging from image recognition over time series prediction to audio classification Provide a concepts-first, reader-friendly introduction to selected scientific-computation topics (namely, matrix computations, the Discrete Fourier Transform, and wavelets), all accompanied by torch code you can play with. Deep Learning and Scientific Computing with R torch is written with first-hand technical expertise and in an engaging, fun-to-read way.

Correlates and Consequences of Believing in Free Will
Few concepts are more ingrained in the collective Western psyche than free will. While there is considerable disagreement among philosophers about how the term free will should be best understood. The belief that we can (at least sometimes) make decisions and perform actions that are free from the physical constraints of our biology and environment is a pervasive Western assumption. Yet, not only is there no evidential support for such a capacity, the latest research about how the brain functions appears to point in the opposite direction. New discoveries increasingly demonstrate the many ways in which humans are subject to influences well beyond the control of the conscious self. Given that our Western sensibilities generally take free will to be the linchpin upon which all moral obligations depend (Kant, 1785), it is unsurprising that many people feel threatened by the prospect that, despite its intuitive appeal, free will may be an illusion. In the past, much of the concern surrounding free will scepticism was the more or less speculative worry that widespread acceptance of such scepticism would lead to the unravelling of our moral fabric. Recently this worry has been given empirical support. New findings from social psychology indicate that diminished belief in free will is associated with reduced prosocial tendencies and increased anti-social tendencies. In response to these findings, many academics have expressed concern that widespread doubt about the existence of free will may have a deleterious effect on individual behaviour, interpersonal relationships and the political and social institutions that rely on the assumption of it. Some have even gone so far as to recommend insulating the public from information that calls into question the existence of free will. Given how strongly this message has been resonating both within the academic community and more recently the public domain, a detailed examination of whether or not society would benefit by giving-up the belief in free will is necessary and timely
inductive nihilism
Within the debate about context-sensitivity, Invariantism is an extreme view. It holds that most words have the same meaning in all contexts, as do most sentences. The goal of this chapter is both exposition and argumentation. First, I want to draw a distinciton between being an invariantist about a particular expression in language on the one hand, and (uppercase 'I') Invariantism as a general semantic theory. Given this distinction, we can use motivations for lower-case 'i' invariantism about some terms to construct the general semantic theory that is Invariantism. In explaining and motivating this general theory, I will also look at some objections to the theory and respond to them.

Great on Their Behalf

It challenges them to explore effective ways to focus on what students need. Then, it provides the necessary knowledge and skills for school boards to empower their students for success.
Eudaemonism About Virtue and Worthy Agent Right Action
A principle of right action functions within a virtue-oriented ethical theory in the same way that a principle of right action functions within consequentialism and deontology. The theory's principle of right action is filled out by providing an account of the virtuous agent, or substantive accounts of the virtues, in the same way a value axiology does so in a consequentialist theory, and in the same way that an account of the moral law does so in a deontological theory (Hursthouse, 1999; Sandler, 2007). In a theory of environmental ethics, the aim is to provide an account of the norms of character and the norms of action which ought to govern our human relationship with the natural environment. If the two central ethical questions are "What kind of person should I be?" and "What should I do?", a theory of environmental virtue ethics needs to provide a satisfying answer to both, informing us on the qualities of character we ought to cultivate with regard to the environment, and the sorts of behaviour we ought to engage in with regard to the environment (Sandler, 2005: p.2).
