Corporate Social Responsibility and Shareholder Value. A Perfect Fit?
Essay from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Essen, language: English, abstract: In 1986, Rappaport published the book "Creating Shareholder Value", in which he described the shareholder value (SV) approach as a new standard for business performance. A quantitative, corporate ethical philosophy is addressed with the term "shareholder value", which has always been a matter of course for business investment theorists. Basically, shareholder value describes the mathematical maximization of the net present value of investments. This entrepreneurial approach was not viewed with skepticism on a global scale until the banking and financial crisis. An alternative approach was examined to overcome the banking and economic crisis. The corporate social responsibility (CSR) approach emerged, which was seen as a sustainable and pluralistic alternative. However, the CSR approach is viewed critically from a business perspective. It is questioned to what extent CSR actually influences on the economic success of a company. This will also be the subject of this essay. The aim is to show whether linking CSR and the SV approach creates a corporate strategy that generates monetary gains and represents a perfect fit.

Ethics of Algorithms. Ethical Challenges and Outcomes of Algorithmic Decision-Making
Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 1,3, University of Hamburg, language: English, abstract: This study tries to answer these questions and investigates the ethical challenges of ADM (Algorithm Decision Making) arisen in the context of ethical decision-making and their ethical outcomes. Algorithms and algorithmic decision-making simplify and improve people's lives and create new values for our society. ADM is used by banks to establish creditworthiness or by the police to calculate the likelihood of future crimes. It is used in agriculture, aviation, the insurance industry, and many other business areas. ADM is becoming increasingly essential and plays a crucial role in our daily life. However, the use of algorithms is not just about opportunities and benefits. ADM hides significant risks and creates further ethical challenges. The ethics of algorithms is a provocative topic that causes a lot of controversies. As well as the application of ADM in the ethical context. Is it ethical to use algorithmic decision-making? Is the decision-maker "moral aware" of applying ADM?. Does moral awareness about the ethical implications of ADM always lead to ethical decisions?

Curious Habits
A curious habit is helpful... until it's not. Attention to detail is great - perfectionism is a curious habit. Chocolate is awesome - using it to treat anxiety is a curious habit. Honest self-awareness is admirable - constantly beating yourself up is a curious habit. We have habits for a reason, we repeat things that feel good and move away from the stuff we don't like. Our habits solve a problem and make life easier. Unfortunately, our habits can turn on us. This book teaches us how to use curiosity as a superpower. It takes the blame and shame out of habit change so that we make the change not because we HAVE to, but because we WANT to. Drawing from the collective wisdom of evolutionary biology, neuroscience, Stoic philosophy and even Instagram, leading mindset coach Luke Mathers helps us embrace the power of curiosity to recognise when habits start to impact negatively our health and happiness. Curious Habits offers an entertaining, thought-provoking and non-judgmental exploration into why we do the things we do, and how to reset for a healthier, happier and more fulfilling life.

We envisage this book will contribute to the rapid development in health data science. We provide straightforward explanations of the collected statistical theory and models, compilations of a variety of publicly available data, and illustrations of data analytics using commonly used statistical software of SAS/R. We will have the data and computer programs available for readers to replicate and implement the new methods. The primary readers would be applied data scientists and practitioners in any field of data science, applied statistical analysts and scientists in public health, academic researchers, and graduate students in statistics and biostatistics. The secondary readers would be R&D professionals/practitioners in industry and governmental agencies. This book can be used for both teaching and applied research.
We The People
Just because we can do something, does that mean we should do it? While embracing the promise of technological advances and data-driven decision-making, a democratic society also must acknowledge and address potential harms to individuals, populations, and society as a whole. In this data ethics "playbook," data governance practitioner and educator Kathy Rondon lays out potential problems in our collection, sharing, use, and retention of data; how those problems can negatively impact more than just an individual person's privacy; and the questions we should be asking of ourselves and our data practices in order to "secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity."Applicable to both public sector and private sector entities operating in a democratic society, the playbook is both aspirational and actionable, offering a conceptual framework rather than an "ethics compliance checklist." Using the goals of the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution to frame the conversation, the reader will come to understand how leveraging big data can promote democratic values...and how it can undermine them when ethical considerations take a back seat to unfettered data collection and use.Employing a case study model to delve into where missteps, usually unintentional, have occurred in data ethics practices, the author guides readers through the questions they should ask when undertaking a data-focused project. She also points out avenues for advocacy that readers can consider to promote better data-related laws, more effective organizational data policies, and well-articulated ethical frameworks. The result is a current and actionable approach to data ethics.

Organising Responses to Climate Change
Climate change is the most important issue now facing humanity. As global temperatures increase, floods, fires and storms are becoming both more intense and frequent. People are suffering. And yet, emissions continue to rise. This book unpacks the activities of the key actors which have organised past and present climate responses - specifically, corporations, governments, and civil society organisations. Analysing three elements of climate change - mitigation, adaptation and suffering - the authors show how exponential growth of the capitalist system has allowed the fossil fuel industry to maintain its dominance. However, this hegemonic position is now coming under threat as new and innovative social movements have emerged, including the fossil fuel divestment movement, Fridays for Future, Extinction Rebellion and others. In exposing the inadequacies of current climate policies and pointing to the possibilities of new social and economic systems, this book highlights how the worst impacts of climate change can be avoided.

Business Ethics - A Philosophical and Behavioral Approach
In this textbook we examine the extent to which moral values play a role as productive forces for companies and the economy as a whole, and explores the effect of ethical and unethical behavior at both levels. We show how ethics improves productivity, and provide specific ethics tools for practical application for both students and managers. Stemming from an overall interdisciplinary approach, this textbook fills a gap in the literature on ethics in business. Following a textbook structure, we first derive knowledge from scientific studies that are relevant for students, and then summarize the results. We explain ethical assessment approaches, and then provide an ethical assessment of economic behavior using case studies. Roleplaying and games are used to explain the behavior of people in relation to ethics. The 2nd edition has been completely revised and expanded to include new findings from the behavioral sciences (psychology, social psychology, sociology and behavioral economics). In particular, the research on emotions, motivation and group behavior have given rise to many new impulses in business ethics. In addition, new case studies and new chapters were included, like Politics and Morality, Theories of Justice, Global Ethics, and Institutions as Solutions to Specific Game Situations (game theory). This book is important for students and researchers as well as policymakers and business executives due to its focus on applications.
Modern Survey Analysis
This book develops survey data analysis tools in Python, to create and analyze cross-tab tables and data visuals, weight data, perform hypothesis tests, and handle special survey questions such as Check-all-that-Apply. Since surveys are widely used as the primary method to collect data, and ultimately information, on attitudes, interests, and opinions of customers and constituents, these tools are vital for private or public sector policy decisions. As a compact volume, this book uses case studies to illustrate methods of analysis essential for those who work with survey data in either sector. It focuses on two overarching objectives: Demonstrate how to extract actionable, insightful, and useful information from survey data; andIntroduce Python and Pandas for analyzing survey data.

Corporate Underground: Bootleg Innovation and Constructive Deviance
In the corporate underground, creative intrapreneurs produce ideas autonomously and without the consent of management. Such informal activity frequently 'corrects' and compensates for the weaknesses of formal organizational systems. The corporate underground is an adjusting element for a number of organizational paradoxes. This imposes a certain legitimacy on covert activities such as bootlegging and constructive deviance. It reflects a basic axiom of the evolutionary perspective: change and creativity are reliant upon elements of redundancy, waste and inefficiency. With contributions from 16 leading experts in this field, the book offers a comprehensive picture of the nature of covert creativity for theory, research and practice. The chapters cover a wide range of facets of underground activity, including basic information, the sensitive transition from underground to formal disclosure at an organization, and psychological factors. This book is a valuable compendium for academics and practitioners interested in R&D and innovation. Management seeking to better manage their innovative capabilities in their companies will also benefit from this book.
Corporate Control of White-Collar Crime
Traditionally, corporate control is all about top-down approaches to management of employees. Executives attempt to influence employees toward achieving business goals, and they attempt to prevent and detect wrongdoing, misconduct, and crime among employees. However, top-down approaches to corporate control do not work when executives and other privileged individuals in the business themselves commit and conceal their wrongdoing, misconduct, and crime in organizational settings. Then there is a need for a bottom-up approach in corporate control as outlined in this book. Bottom-up control refers to the manner in which organizational members can use different types of control mechanisms - such as whistleblowing, transparency, resource access, or culture - to monitor, measure, and evaluate executives' avoidance of deviant behaviors and influence them toward achieving the organization's goals in efficient and effective ways. The newly emerging perspective of a social license to operate forms part of the bottom-up strategy where criminalization becomes social property independent of the criminal justice system. The social license is predominantly centered on social permission for business activity where the media, social movements, and citizen watchdogs exert pressure, demand change, and bring top management to account. This book presents a novel approach to corporate control of white-collar crime based on the theory of convenience. White-collar crime is financial crime committed by privileged individuals who have legitimate access to resources based on the power and trust inherent through their professional positions. Convenience theory proposes that motive, opportunity, and willingness are the three dimensions that underlie white-collar crime in an organizational context. This book contributes to the study of white-collar criminality through a blend of theoretical discussions and practical materials that illuminate and support the use of convenience theory. The book discusses how bottom-up approaches can overcome the difficulty of detecting white-collar crime and overcome the barriers of preventing executive deviance.
The 6 Types of Working Genius
New York Times best-selling author Patrick Lencioni unveils a truly groundbreaking new model that will change the way we think about work and teams forever. The 6 Types of Working Genius is the fastest way to help people identify the type of work that brings them joy and energy, and avoid work that leads to frustration and burnout. Beyond the personal discovery and instant relief that Working Genius provides, the model also gives teams a remarkably simple and practical framework for tapping into one another's natural gifts, which increases productivity and reduces unnecessary judgment. He tells the story of Bull Brooks, an entrepreneur, husband, and father who sets out to solve his own frustration at work and stumbles into a new way of thinking that changes the way he sees his work, his team, and even his marriage. What sets this book--and the model behind it--apart from other tools and assessments is the speed at which it can be understood and applied, and the relevance it has to every kind of work in life, from running a company to launching a product to managing a family. In addition to this book, Lencioni and the Table Group have created a 10-minute assessment that helps individuals quickly identify their gifts and apply this model to themselves and their teams. The Age Structure of the Corporate System
This work aims to serve two primary purposes: first, to present findings regarding the age and related characteristics of corporations within the private enterprise system. The research seeks to provide insights into corporate behavior and potential implications for both private and public policy, acknowledging that some conclusions may be open to debate and may inspire differing interpretations from future researchers. To support such re-evaluation, the book offers a detailed explanation of the analytical methods employed, hoping to aid further investigation and refinement by others in the field. The second purpose is to stimulate greater interest in the study of corporate "vital statistics," illustrating how various significant inferences can be drawn from a specific set of data. The author hopes this work will encourage the collection of more comprehensive and detailed corporate statistics, which could remove certain analytical limitations encountered here. This study is positioned as an initial exploration, not a final statement; with better data and refined methods from subsequent research, the findings may soon be surpassed, thereby achieving the goal of inspiring more advanced inquiries. The author acknowledges valuable support from collaborators who contributed significantly to data handling and preparation, including Mrs. Harriet Ross and the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of California, Berkeley. Their assistance lightened the burden of this extensive project; however, any errors or misinterpretations are the author's responsibility alone. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1953.,
The Science of Getting Rich for Women
FIND YOUR SECRET PATH TO MAKING MILLIONSSo far, women have lost $800 billion in the pandemic. For decades, if not centuries, women have earned 75 cents to the dollar of their male counterparts, with an even bigger gap for women of color. The Science of Getting Rich for Women aims to be an antidote to this global financial gap and a catalyst for women's financial freedom and empowerment.Author Sara Connell shares the exact journey she took to go from struggling to make $20,000 a year as a writer and coach to making over $1,000,000 in one year as an author, speaker, and coach. She shares the step-by-step process she has used with 1000s of mothers, writers, coaches, leaders, and entrepreneurs to create impact and income through work that they love, using their mission, their stories, and their talents. You'll also read the stories of 25 women who started without investors, capital-or in many cases, anyone believing in them-and became millionaires. By the end of this book, you will have a toolkit to create millions, while changing lives and having a positive impact on our planet.
Management Ideas
This book offers a short history of business administration in four parts. Part 1 takes the reader from 8000 BCE with the development of simple control techniques to the middle of the nineteenth century. At this time, normative, empirical, and theoretical approaches to business problems in the industrial area were developed. Furthermore, more powerful methodologies came into use. In Part 2, the criteria for science are discussed and related to the development of business administration as a science at the beginning of the twentieth century. Part 3 demonstrates, using Germany as an example, the development of business administration as strongly influenced by its societal environment. The cases of National Socialist Germany, the socialist environment of the German Democratic Republic, and the reconstruction of an academic-inspired business administration in Western Germany are provided as illustrative examples. Part 3 also presents a typology of major specializations in business administration, examples of their development, and a proposal for a curricular approach to the discipline. The fourth and final part presents the benefits of studying the history of management ideas. This book is useful for academics in business administration, advanced students, and anyone who seeks to understand recent developments in business administration.
Flexability
A comprehensive, coach-yourself guide for busy, burnt-out leaders to take back control of flexible working arrangements and find balance in an overworked world. Despite the promise of a post-pandemic 'reset' that would make flexible work practices mainstream, it seems that overwork is here to stay. According to leading executive coach and psychologist, Dr Karen Morley, overwork is driven by ambitious, competitive and over-confident bosses who chase continuous growth and are prepared to sacrifice their own health and wellbeing, and that of their workforce, to achieve increasingly unrealistic targets. Remote work or not, this hasn't changed. High achieving, conscientious and agreeable leaders, the lifeblood of organizational success, get caught in the slipstream. In a world where overwork remains an expectation, flexible work has not been the solution we had all been hoping for. Rather, it has just blurred the boundaries between personal and professional life. It's time for leaders to take better control of where and when they work - a concept the author refers to as 'flexAbility'. Flexibility is how the system operates, flexAbility is how to operate in this demanding system.

Corporate Social Responsibility
This book attempts to clarify the social responsibility of business along global supply chains beyond mere profit maximisation as famously argued by Milton Friedman. In this context, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is understood as the responsibility of business to align corporate policies and procedures with commonly accepted ethical standards and to respect stakeholders' rights in day-to-day business. As such, CSR is by no means voluntary but constitutes a fundamental prerequisite for companies to keep their license to operate for sustainaable growth and survival in an ever more competitive global market. Inspired by Germany' recent efforts to regulate global supply chains, Germany's Due Diligence Act is analysed in terms of its potential and limitations to promote responsible business practices and complemented by alternative approaches for more co-responsibility of business globally.
