Running the Tapes

Royce,Sparks  著
2025/03/05 出版

This practical and accessible exploration of ethics in organizational leadership contains several underlying themes: first, that even the most morally stalwart organizations are vulnerable to the ethical challenges that come from failings of leadership, particularly executive leadership. A great focus today is being paid to the idea of toxic work environments, and while explorations of culture, team building, and language are all valuable pieces of this discussion, at its heart this is a question of leadership. Stripping away authority as a requisite for leadership empowers everyone at all levels of an organization to take a higher level of ownership over their leadership skills, to become a voice of action and protection for their teammates and the organization when the conventional safeguards of the workplace fail them. The common term for these individuals may be whistleblowers, but rather, are they instead models of leadership that organizations should be paying closer attention to? By drawing a constant dividing line between ethics and organizational interests, have we been missing a key middle ground this entire time? By redefining the boundaries of leadership through the lens of how to take action in a hostile workplace environment, this book offers a series of accessible strategies, principles, and examples that can be easily followed regardless of rank or position. Based on his consulting work, the author recounts actual ethical investigations of egregious workplace violations. The author also includes examples of well-known historical individuals who made the choice to put aside self-interest and act for the well-being of their colleagues and the organization. To make this book even more valuable, the author offers strategies for how to parse grievances from genuine wrongdoings, make decisions about how to handle delicate information, choose allies wisely, and prepare for both the consequences and sometimes benefits of bringing organizational wrongdoings to light. Finally, this book aims to inspire courage, nurture leadership growth at all levels, and offer leaders in positions of power a clear case for why opting for environments of ethical accountability is synonymous, rather than at odds, with an organization's self-interest.

Conflict Resilience

Harper Business 出版
2025/03/02 出版

Two former Harvard faculty--one an internationally-recognized negotiator and conflict management expert from Harvard Law, the other a leading behavioral neurologist and cutting-edge scientist from Harvard Med--join forces to introduce conflict resilience: the radical act of sitting in and growing from conflict to break the bad habits that sabotage our politics, workplaces, and most important relationships. Conflict is getting the better of us.From our homes and community centers to C-Suites and Congress, disagreements are happening everywhere, with increasing frequency, and are being treated like zero-sum games that allow little margin for error and even less room for productive conversations. This puts a tremendous and untenable strain on our most important relationships and institutions.Unable or unwilling to negotiate conflict with skill, we ignore it or avoid it for as long as possible; when we are forced to face it, we escalate everyday disagreements and temporary flare-ups as if they're life-and-death. Neither approach addresses underlying issues, promotes stronger relationships, or yields satisfying results. But there is a solution: a combined skillset and mindset that Bob Bordone calls "conflict resilience"--the ability to sit genuinely with and grow from disagreement. In this powerful, hopeful book, he and renowned neurologist Joel Salinas, MD, combine the inner mechanics of conflict--literally what's going on in our bodies and our brains during moments of distress--with a groundbreaking three-step framework for how to navigate it: NAME (& dig deep)EXPLORE (& be brave)COMMIT (& own the conflict)In a time of increasing polarization, where consensus, agreement, and problem-solving can sometimes feel elusive, Conflict Resilience provides practical solutions to a common dilemma: How do you handle disagreements and differences with integrity while finding a way to create strong, deep, and lasting relationships?Conflict Resilience is not another book about conflict resolution, nor is it about problem solving. Conflict Resilience combines practical applications of advanced conflict management and study of the human brain to teach anyone how to turn conflict and negotiation into an act of union. This book provides the most cutting-edge and scientifically-grounded tools for driving agreement when possible and for empowering you to disagree better when the differences cut deep and the relationships matter most. This is a chance to bring people together, and an invitation to radically transform how we interact with our friends and families, our co-workers, our students, and our neighbors--anyone with whom we find ourselves in disagreement.

The Ripple Effect

ECW Press 出版
2025/02/23 出版

Featuring insights from seasoned networking professionals, The Ripple Effect: Networking for Success offers valuable guidance on establishing and nurturing long-term connections. "How did you get where you are today?" At public speaking events, this is the most frequent question young professionals ask former Ontario politician David Tsubouchi and governance and communications consultant Marc Kealey. The answer: it is impossible to succeed alone. A friend once said, "A better network equals a better net worth." This is not to say networking is purely transactional or about how many people one knows: networking is about building relationships based on mutual respect and trust so everyone involved can thrive. Tsubouchi, Kealey, and 18 other accomplished and prominent Canadians have come together to share their stories and advice on networking for success. They represent people from different sectors who started with nothing and faced more barriers than others because of their gender, ethnicity, and/or immigrant status. From entrepreneurs to executives, their experiences show aspiring networkers the true meaning of perseverance and how they can make networking opportunities fulfilling experiences.

The No Club

Simon & Sc 出版
2025/02/19 出版

In this "long overdue manifesto on gender equality in the workplace," (Angela Duckworth, bestselling author of Grit), The No Club offers a timely call and an action plan to unburden women from work that goes unrewarded. The No Club started when four women, crushed by endless to-do lists, banded together to get their work lives under control. Working harder than ever, they still trailed behind their male colleagues. And so, they vowed to say no to requests that pulled them away from the work that mattered most to their careers. Their over-a-decade-long journey and subsequent, groundbreaking research reveals that women everywhere are unfairly burdened with "non-promotable work," a tremendous problem we can--and must--solve. All organizations have work that no one wants to do: planning the office party, screening interns, attending to that time-consuming client, or simply helping others with their work. A woman, most often, takes on these tasks. In study after study, the original "No Club"--professors Linda Babcock (bestselling author of Women Don't Ask), Brenda Peyser, Lise Vesterlund, and Laurie Weingart--document that women are disproportionately asked and expected to do this work. The imbalance leaves women overcommitted and underutilized as companies forfeit revenue, productivity, and top talent. The No Club walks through how any woman can rebalance her workload, empowering individuals to make savvy decisions about the work they take on. The authors also illuminate how organizations can reassess how they assign and reward work to level the playing field. With hard data, personal anecdotes from women of all stripes, self- and workplace-assessments for immediate use, and innovative advice from the authors' consulting with Fortune 500 companies, this book will forever change the conversation about how we advance women's careers and achieve equity in the 21st century.

Business School and the Noble Purpose of the Market

Stanford 出版
2025/02/15 出版

The intellectual foundation for the next generation of business leaders Today's business schools were designed for a world that no longer exists. Capitalism raised the standard of living for billions of people over the past 150 years, but is now causing systemic challenges it is unable to address, including climate change and inequality. And yet, business schools continue to teach ideas that are making things worse: elevating the primacy of shareholder profits above the interests of employees, the environment, and society; viewing government as an intrusion on the free market rather than an arbiter of its proper functioning; and promoting unlimited economic growth despite the devastating environmental and social consequences. Business schools cannot simply drop an elective into their curriculum to address these challenges. We must rethink the faulty foundations. Business School and the Noble Purpose of the Market explains the intellectual foundation MBA students, faculty, and administrators need to reform capitalism and restore its noble purpose for the 21st century. Many business students are in fact seeking this kind of education and frustrated that they are not getting it from their professors. This book will fill in gaps in their education, equipping them with the models and mindset to rethink shareholder capitalism and serve society's needs. Business faculty and administrators will find a practical program for amending curriculum and pedagogy, changing student and faculty rewards, and bringing a new spirit and sensibility to the business school.

The Measure of Progress

Diane,Coyle  著
Princeton 出版
2025/02/13 出版

Why do we use eighty-year-old metrics to understand today's economy? The ways that statisticians and governments measure the economy were developed in the 1940s, when the urgent economic problems were entirely different from those of today. In The Measure of Progress, Diane Coyle argues that the framework underpinning today's economic statistics is so outdated that it functions as a distorting lens, or even a set of blinkers. When policymakers rely on such an antiquated conceptual tool, how can they measure, understand, and respond with any precision to what is happening in today's digital economy? Coyle makes the case for a new framework, one that takes into consideration current economic realities. Coyle explains why economic statistics matter. They are essential for guiding better economic policies; they involve questions of freedom, justice, life, and death. Governments use statistics that affect people's lives in ways large and small. The metrics for economic growth were developed when a lack of physical rather than natural capital was the binding constraint on growth, intangible value was less important, and the pressing economic policy challenge was managing demand rather than supply. Today's challenges are different. Growth in living standards in rich economies has slowed, despite remarkable innovation, particularly in digital technologies. As a result, politics is contentious and democracy strained. Coyle argues that to understand the current economy, we need different data collected in a different framework of categories and definitions, and she offers some suggestions about what this would entail. Only with a new approach to measurement will we be able to achieve the right kind of growth for the benefit of all.

The Broken Rung

Harvard 出版
2025/01/29 出版

A National BestsellerThe broken rung is more pervasive than the glass ceiling in holding women back from career success. Three McKinsey senior partners offer strategies for overcoming it and fulfilling your potential.Women around the world do extremely well when it comes to their education. They graduate at higher rates than men and have higher average GPAs. But then a strange thing happens: upon entering the workforce, they immediately lose their advantage. When the first promotions come around, the slide continues. For every 100 men promoted to manager, only 81 women overall and 77 women of color get promoted. This is what McKinsey senior partners Kweilin Ellingrud, Lareina Yee, and Mar穩a del Mar Mart穩nez call "the broken rung," and its effects compound throughout women's careers, causing them to fall behind at the start and keeping them from catching up. In this groundbreaking book, the authors reveal the problem's underlying cause: while about half of a person's lifetime earnings come from education and half from work experience, men get more value from their experience than women do. It is also here, in one's work experience, that the solution lies: women need to build their "experience capital" to level the playing field and maximize their earning potential. The book combines over a decade of research, personal conversations with more than fifty remarkable leaders, and the authors' own rich experiences as leaders at McKinsey. They weave data on the potential pitfalls with inspiring and instructive stories of women who have climbed over the broken rung using strategies that increased their experience capital.Leaders and companies must do more to address gender inequalities in the workplace. But you don't have to wait. The Broken Rung is your guide, right now, for moving up the career ladder and reaching your full potential at work.
