The Workshop Survival Guide
Need to run a workshop? Your attendees are trusting you with their time and attention. What are you giving them in return? Most workshops don't work. They fail to deliver real results and they fail to keep the audience energetic and engaged. They're stressful to run and painful to attend.Designing and running a brilliant workshop is easier than you think. It's not about flashy showmanship or natural charisma. Instead, it's about following a set of clear, simple rules for structuring and arranging the day.Discover and use key design principles such as: Naturally refresh and maintain the audience's attention and energy by alternating the "teaching format" (e.g. lecture, small group discussion, hands-on practice) every 20 minutes and making strategic use of good breaksDramatically improve your educational impact by choosing an exercise which is properly matched to the type of knowledge/skill/wisdom currently being taughtSave dozens of hours by beginning your design process with a simple "skeleton" of Learning Outcomes and timings rather than jumping straight into slides and materialsFinish on time, every time, by intentionally designing flexible "schedule springs" into your session, allowing you to seamlessly adjust to delays and bad luck, and to ensure that everyone learns what they came for without running lateThe first half of the book covers everything you'll need to know about designing and refining the session itself. With a good design in hand, teaching a brilliant workshop goes from arduous to nearly automatic. The second half of the book shifts from ahead-of-time design to day-of facilitation.Learn the essential facilitation needed to solve unexpected problems and run a smooth, stress-free workshop: Reliable tools and tactics for crowd control, recovering attention, and shifting between tasks (without feeling like you're fighting against your audience)Clear guidance for picking the best room setup, and also improving a "bad" room to make the most of itSpotting and problem-solving the six major types of "difficult" attentees who are being either accidentally or intentionally disruptive (including the most common issue of bringing a hostile expert onto your side)Checklists and reminders of what to bring, what to do, and when to do it, in order to ensure that nothing gets forgotten, overlooked, or lostAt no point in the book will we ask you to "put on a big smile" or "project confidence". That's fluffy BS which doesn't work. Instead, we'll give you clear, concrete tools for managing a crowd and seamlessly guiding everyone to an effective outcome. Why we're the right authors to help you succeedOver the last 15 years, we've designed and run a huge number of successful workshops (and a few major flops) covering every type of audience: executives, undergrads, MBAs, disadvantaged youths, busy professionals, and more. We've designed everything from 20-minute teasers to 3-month intensives, in locations ranging from Costa Rica and Qatar to London and Berlin. We've taught for companies like HP and Deloitte and for universities like Oxford and NYU. We've built workshops for every price point, from free upskilling (paid for by the state or employer) through to $4000-per-seat premium events. We've taught casual sessions, with beer in hand and flip-flop on foot, through to formal, posh affairs with glitzy venues and high-end catering. In every case, no matter where it was located or who it was for, the process outlined in these pages worked.Perhaps most importantly, we can teach you how to do this. We've trained up teachers from scratch who are now billing upwards of $5000 per day and getting invited back to teach again and again. This stuff isn't complicated. You can learn it!

Grappling with the Gray offers a collection of case studies, real and hypothetical, intended to ignite thoughtful consideration of ethical dilemmas in our personal and professional lives. For 20+years, I have been practicing and now it's time to share what has worked for me in the various Fortune 500 companies where I have been successfully employed, delivering results and engaging cross-functional teams to achieve those audacious corporate and personal goals. I have always been a proponent of engaging employees to drive business results. This book outlines a simple roadmap that is from a practitioner's point of view. And, it is buoyed by the current research that supports the roadmap and its methods. My objective is to compel other managers, business leaders, and teachers to get on the employee engagement bus by providing a practical roadmap that yields results.
Marketing Analytics
The authors of the pioneering Cutting-Edge Marketing Analytics return to the vital conversation of leveraging big data with Marketing Analytics: Essential Tools for Data-Driven Decisions, which updates and expands on the earlier book as we enter the 2020s. As they illustrate, big data analytics is the engine that drives marketing, providing a forward-looking, predictive perspective for marketing decision-making. The book presents actual cases and data, giving readers invaluable real-world instruction. The cases show how to identify relevant data, choose the best analytics technique, and investigate the link between marketing plans and customer behavior. These actual scenarios shed light on the most pressing marketing questions, such as setting the optimal price for one's product or designing effective digital marketing campaigns. Big data is currently the most powerful resource to the marketing professional, and this book illustrates how to fully harness that power to effectively maximize marketing efforts.
Raise and Rise
Are you an entrepreneur looking for funds in the digital economy? Raise and Rise offers a goldmine of in-depth knowledge about capital sources and tools for a modern startup featuring venture capital, crowdfunding (including blockchain-based), royalty financing, family offices and angel investors. Knitting together a vivid conversation with solid data, anecdotes, links, fun analyses and curious cases (Uber, Elio Motors, Spotify, and more), Dr. Victoria Silchenko goes beyond conventional narratives and unapologetically reveals the facts that might change your perspective on the best sources of startup financing. Her book takes you on a deep dive into the murky world of funding tools including those built on blockchain technology while providing a fundamental perspective about the digital economy along with a clear explanation of how modern finance works and how money is created. In an era when finding funding is the most important skill of all, this book asks and then answers big questions like these: -Why is obtaining funds for a startup so difficult when there is an abundance of finance available?-Why has Silicon Valley become the world's most powerful startup hub?-How do venture capitalists make investment choices, and do I stand a chance?-What type of crowdfunding would make the most sense for my venture?-How do I raise funds if I don't want to give up my equity?-What about alternative exit options?-Can I get funds via issuing my own cryptocurrency? -Why do I need to build a platform to make it big? -How do I make the most sizable impact with my venture? If you are puzzled about any of the above questions, you are in good hands. Based in Los Angeles, Dr. Silchenko is an economist-turned entrepreneur-turned educator who knows the entrepreneurial start-up struggle first-hand. The field of entrepreneurial venture financing in particular has been her research focus for almost two decades. Besides providing invaluable insights and solid advice about which capital sources might work best based on your particular story, the author makes a compelling case about why raising funding has turned out to be key and why obtaining funding for a startup keeps being remarkably difficult despite an abundance of finance available in the marketplace. The book is as helpful as it is unsettling, making you pause and reflect about the current financial system, who we like to worship, and the importance of building socially-impactful ventures, stressing that acquiring capital is not the purpose of a startup, just as breathing oxygen is not the purpose of human life.
Bitcoin & Black Powernomics
Bitcoin & Black Powernomics is a book for anyone in the community who wants to know the basics of Bitcoin and Blockchain technology. It approaches Bitcoin from a Black perspective and explains how and why BTC has become universally accepted as a money. It pivots to America's political roots and President Nixon's Deal of 1971 that mostly hurt Black America. Today that deal is a $250 trillion global debt denominated economic structure that is not sustainable and repeatedly showing signs of impending failure. Bitcoin & Black Powernomics makes the case that learning and using Bitcoin technology is Black America's best weapon in the struggle for freedom, equality and justice. New Bitcoiners will find their consciousness raised, their sovereignty realized and why and how Bitcoin translates their decisions and values into the economic sphere.
The Gender Pay Gap
This book serves as a resource for both the academic and corporate community, building the reader's awareness of the gender pay gap, its magnitude, ramifications, and providing action plans to address the challenge. This concise guide also provides an eResource with instructor's manual and PowerPoint slides for each chapter.
Successful Outsourcing and Multi-Sourcing
There are books on outsourcing, but most are by academics or consultants. Few address multi-sourcing. The author of Successful Outsourcing and Multi-Sourcing, is a practitioner who headed an operation that handles over 500 million customer contacts a year with less than 30 staff, through both outsourcing and multi-sourcing. Multi-sourcing occurs where each individual function is contracted directly by the client rather than using a large system integrator or prime contractor. This approach lowers costs, reduces reliance on suppliers, speeds up change and generates a greater degree of innovation. The downside is it places much more of the risk on the client and needs specialist skills to run effectively. As well as a focus on multi-sourcing, the book addresses the question of why a business should outsource in the first place and how decisions to do this should be strategic, rather than it being something that happens by accident. Chapters then illuminate the benefits of single-sourcing; the benefits of multi-sourcing; how best to decide what outsourcing model to choose; how to transition to outsourcing; and what steps to take to maximise benefit and minimise risk. Downsides are clearly spelled out and alternatives to outsourcing are examined, including partial outsourcing and insourcing. This book serves as a valuable source of practical guidance for organisations looking at outsourcing strategy, outsourcing professionals, and those teaching or studying business topics.
Behavioral Ethics in Practice
A research-based behavioural ethics primer focuses on how we make moral choices and explains why our internal biases, external social pressures, and situational factors such as time often influence our better nature (and judgment) and lead to ethical missteps.
Capital Structure and Shari’ah Compliance of Non-Financial Firms
In the present financial world, various niche markets play an increasingly important role. One of the fastest-growing niches is, without a doubt, Islamic finance. Indeed, sustainable finance needs constantly evolving innovations, and this book offers valuable insights into Islamic capital structure and Shari'ah equity screening enriching academic discourse. "In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of a new generation of academics and professionals specializing in various aspects of Islamic finance as knowledge and practice. This has brought about a new dynamism and also further sophistication. This book is one of such contributions, as it develops knowledge which is then transformed into practice whereby practical impact is also achieved. Being an academic book, it provokes readers' thoughts, offering a critique of the implications of the currently applied Shari'ah screenings methodologies. As a transformative practical piece, by developing an innovative screening ratio, in this book, Dr. Yildirim extends his focus on the risk-sharing based financing hierarchy, covers thoughts and the underlying philosophy, and proposes an Islamic version of a pecking order hierarchy. This framework can be considered the foundation for developing an Islamic capital structure theory. This book will benefit academics, professionals, investors, as well as policymakers working in the Islamic finance industry and would like to explore more." (Professor Dr. Mehmet Asutay, Durham University Business School, UK) "This book offers, for the first time after the inception of Shari'ah screening methodologies, a groundbreaking new stock screening solution that is comprehensible, practical, and foremost entirely derived from the primary sources of Islam (Qur'an and Sunnah). Congratulations to Dr. Ramazan for his outstanding contribution to Islamic finance and capital markets." (Associate Professor Dr. Ahcene Lahsasna) "This excellent book is a must-have for all corporate finance students/researchers interested in the theoretical aspect of capital structure and the religious discussion of Shari'ah equity screening. This book should become a companion to those involved in a quantitative research environment and aim to conduct a comparative analysis; an ideal resource for everyone, from Shari'ah scholars to Islamic finance practitioners and beginners to experts." (Professor Dr. M. Kabir Hassan, University of New Orleans, USA)
Effective Time Management
Before you can improve your use of time, you need to know how much time you have - typically eight hours in a workday - and how you currently use this time. Keeping a time log for a week and using it to record how long it takes you to complete each of the activities you perform can help you to do this. You should categorize activities and assign them priority levels so that you can create a summary of how you allocate your time over a typical week. From this summary, you can determine where you are wasting time and then address those areas.Energy levels fluctuate throughout the day. Knowing how these "peaks" and "valleys" affect your ability to perform certain tasks can help you schedule your tasks in the most effective way.Generally, energy levels are highest in the morning, so this is a good time to handle difficult or complex tasks that require good short-term memory and high concentration. In the early afternoon, your energy levels start to drop, so it's best to focus on only moderately demanding tasks. By late afternoon, you have the least energy and should focus on tasks that are the easiest to complete. Afternoons lend themselves to creative tasks, processing information, or drawing on long-term memory.Energy levels are moderate in the evening, so this is a suitable time for repetitive tasks that require concentration. The Myers-Briggs test measures your preferences in terms of information gathering, decision making, energy source, and dealing with the outside world to determine your personality type and how you are likely to behave. These personality traits affect how you manage your time. Each personality type has certain strengths and weaknesses. So knowing more about yourself can help you to determine how to improve your time management skills. To manage your time and work effectively, you need to start with goals. You need to set goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-related. Once goals are set, you break them down into tasks to create a comprehensive to-do list. These tasks should be action-centered, incremental, measurable, and scheduled.Once you know what tasks you need to perform to achieve your goals, you should prioritize each according to its importance and urgency. To do this, you can use a priority matrix, which categorizes tasks as either urgent and important, urgent but not important, not urgent but important, or not urgent and not important. To prioritize your workload effectively, you can sequence or queue the tasks you need to perform.

Professionalism and Business Etiquette
What do you think of when you hear the words "business etiquette"? Fancy dinners attended by CEOs? Particular rules for writing letters? Advice about which suit is the "right" suit? All of those things were once considered "business etiquette." But times have definitely changed. Business is no longer the private domain of people in suits and ties. And there's a greater sense of equality between men and women as well as between managers and employees. There's no longer a single set of etiquette "rules" that fits every company or every business situation. The right thing to do in one environment may be unthinkable in another. So today's business etiquette isn't rigid. It's flexible, and the right behavior depends on: -the culture inside the company, -your audience, including your co-workers, customers, and supervisors, -the goals you want to achieve. In this course, you'll learn how to think about culture, audience, and goals to guide you to the correct behavior in many business environments. Specifically, the course will cover behaviors you face every day, including: -fitting in, or adapting to the culture around you, -getting along with the people you work with, -handling sensitive situations, -knowing when to lead and when to follow."To make a pleasant and friendly impression is not only good manners, but equally good business." -- Emily PostWould you know how to use good manners if, as a new employee at a conservative financial institution, your boss told you to "disseminate to the necessary people what you feel are the key findings in the financial report"? Knowing what to do would be good business. What style would you use in your message, and which findings would you include? Which communication medium would you use?The more you understand the role etiquette plays in business communication, the better chance you have of handling uncertain communication situations with style and grace. You'll also know when it's best to use a range of communication tools, from memos and e-mail messages to cellular phones and conference calls. In this course, you'll learn how to make intelligent choices about communication etiquette in your workplace. You'll examine the typical causes of etiquette mistakes in modern communication, learn about a model to help you make communication etiquette decisions, and analyze whether the model was used appropriately for a range of communication situations and tools. You'll also explore etiquette guidelines that apply to the most frequently used communication media in the business world today. What does the word "meeting" mean to you?Regardless of who you are, the word "meeting" probably evokes a strong emotion. Whether that emotion is delight or apprehension, meetings affect everyone in the business world. So why is there such a range of intense feelings when it comes to meetings? Maybe because no two meetings are alike. Some are productive and even fun, and others are like being stuck in traffic, in the smog, on a 100-degree day. What explains such differences in business meetings? What makes one meeting good and another one bad? When meeting facilitators or people who have to participate in meetings begin to apply etiquette to business meeting situations, strange things begin to happen. They're treated better at meetings, and the meetings become more enjoyable and productive. Can learning the principles of proper meeting etiquette really make that much of a difference? You bet it can. Proper etiquette can have a transforming effect on almost any situation, and the business meeting is no exception. In this course, you'll learn about the etiquette of: -business meeting basics, -planning for a meeting, -running a meeting. In days past, workers were more willing to work for a respectable supervisor. Workers still do a better job for supervisors who understand the power of "words and looks." Today, we call those words and looks "etiquette."
Project Management for Non-Project Managers
Organizations are developing project managers from within more and more. Employees who are proficient in their area of expertise are being asked to take on project management. This book explores the basic concepts and fundamentals of project management.Project management processThe first lesson focuses on the project management process: highlighting the importance of effective project management, who's involved with projects, and an introduction to the four phases of the project management process.Project manager roleThe second lesson focuses on the project manager role: highlighting typical roles a project manager must fill to be successful, the value of the project manager, how to deliver the right amount of project management, and how to manage small to medium projects. This book will provide individuals who are not professional project managers with the knowledge required to build a solid understanding of the fundamentals of project management, helping them transition to the role of project manager.Today's business world is a complex and rapidly changing place. Organizations and individuals cannot survive without accepting and embracing change. Change involves your situation: something is different; a bigger office, a new colleague, the reorganization of staff responsibilities.Transition involves a journey; it is the process of disengagement, transformation, and acceptance of change.Put simply, change is the event and transition is the process that takes you there. While it is important to know the terms, concepts, techniques, and skills that are involved in project management, it is even more important to be able to put these to work on the job.A project manager is expected to deal with intangible issues such as human dynamics, establishing authority, and managing people and expectations. This often requires a complex balance of personal and practical skills.Project management is about the management of people, but it is also about managing the way an organization works, and the way the people within it work.As a project manager, you will need to realize that people are inseparable from process. It is not only practical skills, but leadership ability, management skills, and the ability to communicate that are imperative to successful projects.Benjamin Franklin wrote, "For want of a nail the shoe was lost; for want of a shoe the horse was lost; and for want of a horse the rider was lost, being overtaken and slain by the enemy, all for want of care about a horseshoe nail."A small problem overlooked in the early stages of project management can grow to be a critical failure in the later stages. The Initiating and Planning phases of project management are vital to the success of the project. Without the proper tools and information, effective project management is impossible.Imagine what would happen if the head chef of a busy restaurant didn't have the right ingredients for the evening menu. What do you think would happen if she didn't have a plan for efficiently preparing all of the meals during the supper rush?If you don't initiate your project properly, you might not have everything you need to meet your goals. And if you don't plan your project well, you might not meet your goals on time - or at all. This book examines the importance of properly initiating and planning a project, and explores ways to make your initiating and planning efforts more effective.Your project plan is complete. Tasks are clearly outlined, the schedule is in place, and the money is budgeted to the cent. You're getting ready to dig in and start the actual work. You're feeling confident that the project is going to go exactly as planned. How could anything go wrong?Managing is the third phase of project management. You may be tempted to think now that the planning is over the rest of the project will be easy.

Humor, Seriously
WALL STREET JOURNAL, LOS ANGELES TIMES, AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER - Anyone--even you!--can learn how to harness the power of humor in business (and life), based on the popular class at Stanford's Graduate School of Business. Don't miss the authors' TED Talk, "Why great leaders take humor seriously," online now. "The ultimate guide to using the magical power of funny as a tool for leadership and a force for good."--Daniel H. Pink, #1 New York Times bestselling author of When and Drive We are living through a period of unprecedented uncertainty and upheaval in both our personal and professional lives. So it should come as a surprise to exactly no one that trust, human connection, and mental well-being are all on the decline. This may seem like no laughing matter. Yet, the research shows that humor and laughter are among the most valuable tools we have at our disposal for strengthening bonds and relationships, diffusing stress and tension, boosting resilience, and performing when the stakes are high. That's why Jennifer Aaker and Naomi Bagdonas teach the popular course Humor: Serious Business at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where they help some of the world's most hard-driving, blazer-wearing business minds infuse more humor and levity into their work and lives. In Humor, Seriously, they draw on findings by behavioral scientists, world-class comedians, and inspiring business leaders to reveal how humor works and--more important--how you can use more of it, better. Aaker and Bagdonas unpack the theory and application of humor: what makes something funny, how to mine your life for material, and simple ways to identify and leverage your unique humor style. They show how to use humor to rebuild vital connections; appear more confident, competent, and authentic at work; and foster cultures where levity and creativity can thrive. President Dwight David Eisenhower once said, "A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done." If Dwight David Eisenhower, the second least naturally funny president (after Franklin Pierce), thought humor was necessary to win wars, build highways, and warn against the military-industrial complex, then you might consider learning it too.

Lean Out
More than fifty years since the passage of the Equal Pay Act, the wage gap still hovers at 80 percent. Half a billion dollars are spent annually on corporate diversity programs, yet only 5 percent of CEOs in the Fortune 500 are women. Lean Out is an ambitious attempt to answer the question few dare to ask: What have we gotten wrong about women at work?Based on in-depth research and personal experiences, Lean Out is inspired by the journey of Marissa Orr, a single mom of three trying to succeed in her fifteen-year career at the world's top tech giants. In an eye-opening account, Orr exposes the systemic dysfunction at the heart of today's most powerful corporations and how their pursuit to close the gender gap has come at the expense of female well-being. "Fewer women at the top is a clear signal that the system is broken," says Orr. "With female-dominant strengths such as empathy and consensus-building being the future of business, the headlines forecast that women will dominate the future generations of corporate leaders. But that won't happen until prescriptions for success stop requiring women to act more like men, mistaking traits such as empathy as signals of weakness." Lean Out provides a new and refreshingly candid perspective on what it's really like for today's corporate underdogs, while challenging modern feminist rhetoric and debunking the belief that everyone has to be the same in order to be equal. Offering compelling new arguments for the reasons more women don't make it to the top, Lean Out presents a revolutionary path forward, to change the life trajectories of women in the corporate world and beyond.

Good Guys
The key to advancing gender equality? Men.Women are at a disadvantage. At home, they often face an unequal division of household chores and childcare, and in the workplace, they deal with lower pay, lack of credit for their contributions, roadblocks to promotion, sexual harassment, and more. And while organizations are looking to address these issues, too many gender-inclusion initiatives focus on how women themselves should respond, reinforcing the perception that these are "women's issues" and that men—often the most influential stakeholders in an organization—don't need to be involved.Gender-in-the-workplace experts David G. Smith and W. Brad Johnson counter this perception. In this important book, they show that men have a crucial role to play in promoting gender equality at work. Research shows that when men are deliberately engaged in gender-inclusion programs, 96 percent of women in those organizations perceive real progress in gender equality, compared with only 30 percent of women in organizations without strong male engagement.Good Guys is the first practical, research-based guide for how to be a male ally to women in the workplace. Filled with firsthand accounts from both men and women, and tips for getting started, the book shows how men can partner with their female colleagues to advance women's leadership and equality by breaking ingrained gender stereotypes, overcoming unconscious biases, developing and supporting the talented women around them, and creating productive and respectful working relationships with women.
Moral Blindness in Business
In this book, Jacob Dahl Rendtorff investigates moral blindness in business and public administration based on Hannah Arendt's concept of banality of evil in her famous report on the Nazi-criminal Adolf Eichmann trail in Jerusalem in 1961. Moral blindness and evil in management is instrumental wrongdoing inflicted upon human beings as a violation of their dignity and humanity. Organizational evil in business, bureaucracies and public administration is analysed with focus on obedience to authority and systemic role conformity of managers and administrators. This includes the critical question about how concepts of banality of evil and moral blindness can explain ethical insensibility and lack of moral understanding in business and administration. Rendtorff proposes a humanistic vision of management and ethical leadership. Moral thinking, responsibility and moral judgment is essential in management and governance in business and administration. This book is a must-read for academics and practitioners studying and working in philosophy of management, business ethics, political philosophy, administration ethics and corporate social responsibility.
Absolute Essentials of Business Behavioural Ethics
This book provides an entertaining overview of how dishonesty and unethical behaviour has been studied in psychological experiments and the malleable nature of business ethics.

Intrinsic Csr and Competition
This edited book is at the intersection of the discussion on family-owned business, the CSR agenda and company competition in Europe. The authors contribute to the debates on corporate social responsibility by arguing that formal management systems are not the one-size-fits-all solution they are typically presented to be. Exploring alternative interpretations of the profile environmental management activities have in SMEs, the book evaluates the way in which cultural and ethical values are embedded in European SMEs in order to drive and orientate CSR successfully without following the mainstream 'systems' approach. It addresses several values of thought within the CSR debate such as intrinsic CSR, the role of virtue ethics and moral theory in corporate culture, environmental sustainability and vision-driven CSR. Focusing on a European perspective, the book heuristically explores an alternative model for the integration of CSR, innovation dynamics and economic success driven by intrinsic values rather than extrinsic post-decision rationalisations.
