Macroeconomics of microfinance on a sub-national level

Appreciating the divergence of national and sub-national economic trends and incorporating them into the currently used assessment criteria can make MFI evaluation more accurate. I make this point by estimating the impact of state-level macroeconomic factors on two performance indicators of 53 microfinance institutions from Mexico and Brazil. The focal outcome variables, namely operational self-sufficiency and loan delinquency, are first regressed on state-level data and then on national data as a bench-mark. I will demonstrate that by increasing data granularity from the national to the state level, the success of microfinance institutions can be predicted with significantly higher precision. There is also evidence that MFIs are more strongly influenced by long-term economic trends than by fluctuations of the economic cycle.

Disaster Risk Management in Agriculture
The challenges related to disaster risk management (DRM) in the agricultural sector are now widely linked to sustainable environment. The fact remains that almost every day a disaster strikes in some part of the world. Characteristics of Sovereign Wealth Fund Targets
Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 1,3, Technical University of Munich (TUM School of Management), language: English, abstract: Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs) have reached an enormous financial power and have tripled their assets under management to 7.4 trillion American dollars during the past ten years. So far, academia has focused on the most obvious characteristic of SWFs, the state ownership, and relating governance issues. This thesis answers the question of whether there are certain company characteristics, which are preferred by SWFs when investing, and which characteristics influence the ex-post probability of becoming a SWF target. For this purpose, the selected sample is compared to a set of Year, Industry, Size, and MTBV matched peers. First, systematic differences between targets and peers are identified using t-test and Wilcoxon rank sum test statistics. Second, the influence of variables on the ex-post probability of becoming a SWF target is analyzed using logistic panel regression models. The regression results are further discussed using odds ratios and marginal effects analysis. The main finding is that target companies are typically significantly larger than their matched peers, and the size of a company is identified to have the highest influence on the likelihood of becoming a target. This is accompanied by the finding that a higher proportion of held cash has a positive influence, and a higher book leverage ratio has a negative influence. Additionally, it is shown that there are no target characteristics, which would promote large or small-scale investments. As introduction into further research, it is analyzed how stock markets react on announced SWF investments. It is shown that excess returns of approximately one percent can be observed within a three-day event window.
Sustainability Performance, Litigation Provisions and Corporate Bond Spreads
Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 8.5, Maastricht University, language: English, abstract: This study investigates the relation between corporate sustainability performance, corporations' litigation provisions and the yield spread of company issued bonds. Results show a significant negative relation between companies' ESG scores and their bond yield spreads. Most of this effect is accounted to the environmental performance of the company. Furthermore, I find support for a paradigm shift in the perception of sustainability performance. Whereas the effect on the yield spread was positive in years before the financial crisis, this relation turned negative subsequently. Besides that, country and industry facilitate a moderating role in the relationship. A strong ESG performance appears to significantly reduce bond spreads in the Mining industry and in more developed countries. Analyzing the relationship between sustainability performance and litigation provisions, I find that the ESG performance tends to reduce corporations' litigations in the years after 2012. Next to that, the social score has a significant positive relationship with litigation provisions. A mediation and moderation analysis of litigation provisions in the context of sustainability performance and yield spreads did not provide any significant findings. Finally, I conduct an event study attempting to find evidence for a possible causal relationship between sustainability performance and the yield spread.

Bubbles and Crashes
Financial market bubbles are recurring, often painful, reminders of the costs and benefits of capitalism. This sequel to A Life of Experimental Economics, Volume I, continues the intimate history of Vernon Smith's personal and professional maturation after a dozen years at Purdue. The scene now shifts to twenty-six transformative years at the University of Arizona, then to George Mason University, and his recognition by the Nobel Prize Committee in 2002. The book ends with his most recent decade at Chapman University. At Arizona Vernon and his students studied asset trading markets and learned how wrong it had been to suppose that price bubbles could not occur where markets were full-information transparent. Their work in computerization of the lab facilitated very complex supply and demand experiments in natural gas pipeline, communication and electricity markets that paved the way for implementing, through decentralized market processes, the liberalization of industries traditionally believed to be "natural" monopolies. The "Smart ComputerAssisted Market" was born. Smith's move to George Mason University greatly facilitated government and industry work in tandem with various public and private entities, whereas his relocation to Chapman University coincided with the Great Recession, whose similarity with the Depression was evident in his research. There he integrated two fundamental kinds of markets with laboratory experiments: Consumer non-durables, the supply and demand for which was stable in the lab and in the economy, and durable assets whose bubble tendencies made them unstable in the lab as well as in the economy--witness the great housing-mortgage market bubble run-up of 1997-2007.
