Defence Economics and Innovation
This Element presents an analytical model for assessing the success or failure of innovative large-scale defence projects. To achieve this goal, it constructs a theoretical model based on a three-angle analysis: the International System, the innovative potential, and the domestic political arena. Each angle of analysis generates an independent variable, namely: level of threat, technological feasibility, and political consensus. It is held that technological feasibility and political consensus are necessary and conjointly sufficient conditions to explain the success or failure of large-scale defence projects. The success of the innovative defence projects is strongly and positively related to the level of external threat. The initial hypothesis is tested by scrutinizing three specific projects in the United States (Future Combat Systems, The B-2 Stealth Bomber and the F-35). The conclusion is that the model is sound and might be generalized to analyse the prospects of success or failure of other large-scale defence projects.
Economics without Preferences
Economics without Preferences lays out a new microeconomics - a theory of choice behavior, markets, and welfare - for agents who lack the preferences and marginal judgments that economics normally relies on. Agents without preferences defy the rules of the traditional model of rational choice but they can still systematically pursue their interests. The theory that results resolves several puzzles in economics. Status quo bias and other anomalies of behavioral economics shield agents from harm; they are expressions rather than violations of rationality. Parts of economic orthodoxy go out the window. Agents will fail to make the fine-grained trade-offs ingrained in conventional economics, leading market prices to be volatile and cost-benefit analysis to break down. This book provides policy alternatives to fill this void. Governments can spur innovation, the main benefit markets can deliver, while sheltering agents from the upheavals that accompany economic change.

The Market for Skill
How apprenticeship shaped the English economy Apprenticeship dominated training and skill formation in early modern Europe. Years spent learning from a skilled master were a nearly universal experience for young workers in crafts and trade. In England, when apprenticeship reached its peak, as many as a third of all teenage males would serve and learn as apprentices. In The Market for Skill, Patrick Wallis shows how apprenticeship helped reshape the English economy. Some historians see apprenticeship as a key ingredient in the industrial revolution; others agree with Adam Smith in seeing it as wasteful and conservative. Wallis shows that neither of these perspectives is entirely accurate. He offers a new account of apprenticeship and the market for skill in England, analyzing the records of hundreds of thousands of individual apprentices to tell the story of how apprenticeship worked and how it contributed to the transformation of England. Wallis details the activities of apprentices and masters, the strategies of ambitious parents, the interventions of guilds and the decisions of town officials. He shows how the system of early modern apprenticeship contributed to the growth of cities, the movement of workers from farms to manufacturing and the spread of new technologies and productive knowledge. In this groundbreaking study, Wallis argues that apprenticeship succeeded precisely because it was a flexible institution which allowed apprentices to change their minds and exit contracts early. Apprenticeship provided a vital channel for training that families could trust and that was accessible to most young people, whatever their background.

Impact of Technological Innovation on Telecom Firms' Performance. The Role of Creative Behavior and Government Policies
Master's Thesis from the year 2024 in the subject Economics - Innovation economics, grade: A, Riphah International University Islamabad (Faculty of Management Sciences), course: Masters in Engineering Management, language: English, abstract: This study explores the influence of technological innovation on the performance of telecom firms, with a focus on the mediating role of creative behavior and the moderating role of government policies supporting innovation. Data was collected from 326 employees in managerial and operational roles across telecom firms in Pakistan, using a convenience sampling method. Quantitative analysis was performed with SPSS and Smart PLS software. Findings indicate that technological innovation significantly enhances telecom firms' performance. While creative behavior serves as a mediator, its impact is less pronounced. Contrary to expectations, government policies supporting innovation do not exhibit a moderating effect on the relationship between technological innovation and firm performance. This research provides actionable insights for policymakers and telecom regulators to review and refine innovation policies, addressing their current ineffectiveness. The novel exploration of creative behavior as a mediating factor enriches the existing literature on innovation in the telecom sector. Limitations include the focus on a subset of telecom firms in Pakistan and the use of cross-sectional data. The study offers practical implications for policy and decision-makers in fostering technological advancements, while contributing to theoretical understanding of innovation's role in enhancing firm performance in the digital age.

Economics and Literature
Economics and fiction often pursue parallel objectives. Economists analyse human decisions and interactions in markets and other institutions. Fiction writers also provide keen insights into individual minds and motives. This book explores the insights to be gained from developing this parallel.
A Theory of Interregional and International Economics
The contemporary global economy is characterized by complex and nonlinear dynamics of interregional and international economic interactions. The complexity is associated with endogenous changes in wealth, human capital, technology, population, economic structures and gender relations. It is obviously necessary to construct a theory to connect all these changes in a single analytical framework with minimum assumptions. Nevertheless mainstream economic theory on spatial economics is mostly static and partial. This book expands on spatial economics by integrating various theories of spatial economics into a comprehensive and analytical framework through mathematical modelling and computing. This book is part of the author's general economic theory with endogenous population, capital, knowledge, preferences, sexual division of labor and consumption, institutions, economic structures, and exchange values over time and space. It focuses on further developing the theory of interregional and international economies and encompasses dynamic relations between population growth, human capital and wealth accumulation, environmental change, gender, institutions, market structures, the division of labor and consumption, and the determination of price structure among regions and nations in a single analytical framework.

The Nature of Economics
This book conveys a simple idea: that the economic framework established by Smith and Coase is very useful in describing and explaining many facts in the real world.Smith's logic in the Wealth of Nations is simply the following: the extent of market transactions→division of stock→division of labor→economic growth. The logic of Coase in the Coase Theorem is that "the delimitation of rights is an essential prelude to market transactions." The logic of these two great economists can therefore be combined in a comprehensive way: delimitation of rights→the extent of market transactions→division of stock→division of labor→economic growth to the author calls this comprehensive version the Smith-Coase framework in economics. This framework will be repeatedly used in this book to explain various economic problems such as the law of demand, growth and development, monetary theory and policy, among others. According to Lucas, the approach of this book is classical because it "makes no use of utility theory," and because "a household is truly a 'small factory'" ? la Becker; household production function approach will be used to study the behavior of consumers. This makes the substitution structure of production the focus of this book. We view all economic agents as following the least cost principle, meaning that they would try to produce the goods and services they need by using factors of production in the least costly way. But there are at least four factors: labor, capital, land, and organization if we would like to accept the definition of Marshall. What economic agents will do is to substitute one factor for another in order to save the cost of production. The ease of substitution between various factors is therefore important for determining the shape of the substitution structure of production. Based on the principle of least cost, a simple mathematical model will be derived and used to explain various economic problems.
Economic Development of Caricom
It has been suggested that, if CARICOM nations wish to accelerate their development, they should embrace laissez-faire economic policies. However, laissez-faire economic policies have reinforced the very economic and social structures that have contributed to their low level of development; furthermore, laissez-faire economic policies ignore social attitudes that can greatly influence a nation's development. Moreover, low-skilled labor-intensive production processes, which once propelled growth in CARICOM nations, will no longer perform a similar role because production processes are becoming more and more knowledge-skills intensive, and nations wishing to attract foreign manufacturing investment or high-tech services may not be able to do so without an adequate pool of the necessary knowledge skills. CARICOM nations must therefore try to accumulate a pool of knowledge skills that can help their economies become internationally competitive.
Critically Capitalist
Critically Capitalist presents an ethnography of South Korea's asset seekers, including amateur stock investors, real estate enthusiasts, and money coaches, to demonstrate how financialized asset capitalism is sustained. As they hunt for profit margins, rent, and dividends, they simultaneously critique capitalism and posit their pursuit of assets as a form of resistance. Bohyeong Kim theorizes this new spirit of capitalism in South Korea as "critical capitalism," arguing that it reflects the popular discontent with both national development and financial neoliberalism. As a paradoxical critique and legitimation, Bohyeong Kim argues that critical capitalism valorizes the capitalist economy not through a triumphant narrative, but by highlighting the emotional wounds, destroyed communities, and oppressive tactics of modern capitalism. Drawing on multi-sited ethnography and in-depth interviews with a broad community of aspiring millionaires, Critically Capitalist illuminates how contemporary capitalism thrives by channeling discontent into financial and real estate markets, which in turn has cemented critical capitalism as the cultural and affective backbone of South Korea's economy.
The Young Fed
A new history of crisis responses in the central bank's formative years. The long-standing description of the Federal Reserve as a "lender of last resort" refers to the central bank's emergency liquidity provision for financial entities in periods of crisis. As Mark Carlson shows, this function was foundational to how the Fed was designed but has, at times, proven challenging to implement. The Young Fed examines the origins of the Federal Reserve's emergency liquidity provision which, along with the setting of monetary policy, has become a critical responsibility. Focusing on the Fed's response to the financial crises of the 1920s, Carlson documents the formative deliberations of central bank policymakers regarding how to assist banks experiencing distress; the lessons that were learned; and how those lessons shaped subsequent policies. Carlson depicts an early Fed that experimented with a variety of approaches to crises, ranging from bold spectacles featuring cash-filled armored cars to behind-the-scenes interventions to prevent inducing panics or bank runs. The Young Fed weaves previously unpublished material from the Fed archives into a watershed work in American economic history: a deeply sourced account of how the world's most important central bank became a lender of last resort.
Liberal Responses to Populism
Populism has taken root almost everywhere in the West. It is crucial to understand how it has come about, where its antagonistic worldview, its nativism, its illiberalism and its anti-pluralism will take us, and how we should seek to fend off this threat to liberal democracy. In particular, what could liberal answers look like? This book is a collection of essays written by young and senior scholars in various fields from philosophy to economics. Part I explores populism's nature and causes, shedding light on the lure of sovereignty, the perceived representation gap and the process of radicalization, and human psychology. Part II is dedicated to observations inside the political arena, pitting liberalism and populism in a historical perspective, analyzing the risk of democratic backsliding, and asking how liberals should navigate the political need to make compromises. In Part III, the focus turns to liberal responses such as rules-based public deliberation, a liberal ethics attending to civic virtues, improved representation through the blockchain, and polycentric migration policies. Part IV, finally, houses critical engagements with influential relevant authors such as Foucault, Laclau, Berlin, and Harrington. Liberal Responses to Populism is a rich and thought-provoking read for scholars and students in political economy, political science, and political philosophy.
Taxes and Authority in the Late Antique Countryside
How did the late Roman Empire operate in rural areas, where most of its subjects lived? The papyri from Egypt provide glimpses of state activity at the local level, how the countryside responded to it, and thus how "empire" looked on the ground. Since a major motivator for state activity at the local level was tax collection, Taxes and Authority in the Late Antique Countryside homes in on the pagarchs: key fiscal actors at the intersection between provincial, city, and village institutions from the fourth through the seventh centuries CE. The book contextualizes the pagarchs' dealings, backgrounds, and networks from the imperial sphere to the village level, exploring topics such as tax collection procedures in the villages, central accounting and staffing in the cities, the competition of local aristocrats over the countryside, official careers, and local agency versus imperial policy. The result is an analysis of the social mechanics of the fiscal regime in a region of the imperial periphery. Exploring the abundant and diverse papyrological source material, this book offers a uniquely detailed insight into the dynamic relationship between the Roman Empire and local communities in late antiquity.
The State of Economics, the State of the World
Leading economists address the ongoing challenges to economics in theory and practice in a time of political and economic crises. More than a decade of financial crises, sovereign debt problems, political conflict, and rising xenophobia and protectionism has left the global economy unsettled and the ability of economics as a discipline to account for episodes of volatility uncertain. In this book, leading economists consider the state of their discipline in a world of ongoing economic and political crises. The book begins with three sweeping essays by Nobel laureates Kenneth Arrow (in one of his last published works), Amartya Sen, and Joseph Stiglitz that offer a summary of the theoretical foundations of modern economics--the twin pillars of general equilibrium theory and welfare economics. Contributors then turn to macroeconomic stabilization and growth and, finally, new areas of research that depart from traditional theory, methodology, and concerns: climate change, behavioral economics, and evolutionary game theory. The 2019 Nobel Prize laureates, Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo, and Michael Kremer, contribute a paper on the use of randomized control trials indevelopment economics.
Economic Theories, Protagonists and Facts
This book brings together the work of Maria Cristina Marcuzzo and highlights her investigations into the history of economic thought and her quest for an alternative economic thinking. Following an extended introduction that contextualised her ideas and highlights consistent themes throughout the volume, it discusses the theoretical and methodological approaches that have come to define the history of economic thought as a discipline. The work of David Ricardo is then debated, alongside ideas of money and monetary systems. Finally, the impact of the Cambridge economists is presented, with a particular focus on Luigi Pasinetti, Joan Robinson, Piero Sraffa, and John Maynard Keynes. This book combines theoretical discussions with historical analysis, biographical narratives, and original archival researcher to provide rich insights into the history and impact of economics. It will be of interest to students and researchers working within the political economy and the history of economic thought.

Six Generations
Six generations represent only a short moment in the long history of human civilisation, but these Six Generations have brought more change in the way of life of the ordinary man and woman than came in the thousands of years before. From earliest times to the days of O'Connell, the speed of travel was no faster than that of a galloping horse; news of great events could take days even weeks to reach from one end of the country to another. This book describes the significant changes in everyday life - food, entertainment, household goods, working conditions, medicine, roads and communication - and what brought them about.Louis Cullen, who is lecturer in history at Trinity College, Dublin, based the material on original and pioneering research he has carried out over a number of years. The illustrations are drawn from a variety of sources including the National Gallery, the National Library, the London Illustrated News and from many locations all over Ireland. For the older generation this book will recall a way of life in the countryside which has virtually disappeared and for the younger generation it will illuminate what life was like while historic events such as the '98 rising, O'Connell's repeal movement, the Fenians and 1916 were being enacted. For both parents and pupils, this book will serve as a useful companion to the Telef穩s Scoile series of the same title.

Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work.
