More Judgment Than Data
More data has been produced in the 21st century than all of human history combined. Yet, are we making better decisions today than in the past? How many poor decisions result from the absence of data? The existence of an overwhelming amount of data has affected how we make decisions, but it has not necessarily improved how we make decisions. To make better decisions, people need good judgment based on data literacy--the ability to extract meaning from data. Including data in the decision-making process can bring considerable clarity in answering our questions. Nevertheless, human beings can become distracted, overwhelmed, and even confused in the presence of too much data. The book presents cautionary tales of what can happen when too much attention is spent on acquiring more data instead of understanding how to best use the data we already have. Data is not produced in a vacuum, and individuals who possess data literacy will understand the environment and incentives in the data-generating process. Readers of this book will learn what questions to ask, what data to pay attention to, and what pitfalls to avoid in order to make better decisions. They will also be less vulnerable to those who manipulate data for misleading purposes.

Slow Burn
How the subtle but significant consequences of a hotter planet have already begun--from lower test scores to higher crime rates--and how we might tackle them today It's hard not to feel anxious about the problem of climate change, especially if we think of it as an impending planetary catastrophe. In Slow Burn, R. Jisung Park encourages us to view climate change through a different lens: one that focuses less on the possibility of mass climate extinction in a theoretical future, and more on the everyday implications of climate change here and now. Drawing on a wealth of new data and cutting-edge economics, Park shows how climate change headlines often miss some of the most important costs. When wildfires blaze, what happens to people downwind of the smoke? When natural disasters destroy buildings and bridges, what happens to educational outcomes? Park explains how climate change operates as the silent accumulation of a thousand tiny conflagrations: imperceptibly elevated health risks spread across billions of people; pennies off the dollar of productivity; fewer opportunities for upward mobility. By investigating how the physical phenomenon of climate change interacts with social and economic institutions, Park illustrates how climate change already affects everyone, and may act as an amplifier of inequality. Wealthier households and corporations may adapt quickly, but, without targeted interventions, less advantaged communities may not. Viewing climate change as a slow and unequal burn comes with an important silver lining. It puts dollars and cents behind the case for aggressive emissions cuts and helps identify concrete steps that can be taken to better manage its adverse effects. We can begin to overcome our climate anxiety, Park shows us, when we begin to tackle these problems locally.
Economies of scale in the airline industry
Seminar paper from the year 2023 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 1.1, Erasmus University Rotterdam (Erasmus School of Economics), language: English, abstract: What effect does the size (number of employees) of airlines around the world have on their profitability and how does this differ between European and American airlines? To determine whether this was the case, an analysis of Orbis data, and further technical exploration through scatterplots and graphs in SPSS, was conducted. However, the statistical data suggests that there is no significant relationship between an airline織s size and its profitability. Our results, therefore, conclude that large airlines cannot make use of economies of scale to become more profitable, potentially encouraging policy makers to change the current market structure as larger firms are provenly not more efficient.

The Economics of Sovereign Debt and Default
An integrated approach to the economics of sovereign default Fiscal crises and sovereign default repeatedly threaten the stability and growth of economies around the world. Mark Aguiar and Manuel Amador provide a unified and tractable theoretical framework that elucidates the key economics behind sovereign debt markets, shedding light on the frictions and inefficiencies that prevent the smooth functioning of these markets, and proposing sensible approaches to sovereign debt management. The Economics of Sovereign Debt and Default looks at the core friction unique to sovereign debt-the lack of strong legal enforcement-and goes on to examine additional frictions such as deadweight costs of default, vulnerability to runs, the incentive to "dilute" existing creditors, and sovereign debt's distortion of investment and growth. The book uses the tractable framework to isolate how each additional friction affects the equilibrium outcome, and illustrates its counterpart using state-of-the-art computational modeling. The novel approach presented here contrasts the outcome of a constrained efficient allocation-one chosen to maximize the joint surplus of creditors and government-with the competitive equilibrium outcome. This allows for a clear analysis of the extent to which equilibrium prices efficiently guide the government's debt and default decisions, and of what drives divergences with the efficient outcome. Providing an integrated approach to sovereign debt and default, this incisive and authoritative book is an ideal resource for researchers and graduate students interested in this important topic.

The Rise and Fall of the Italian Economy
Carlo Bastasin and Gianni Toniolo provide a much-needed, up-to-date economic history of Italy from unification in 1861 to the present day. They show how, thirty years after unification, Italy began a long phase of convergence with more advanced economies so that by the late twentieth century Italy's per capita income reached the levels of Germany, France and the UK. From the mid-1990s, however, the Italian economy declined first in relative and then absolute terms. The authors describe the intertwined financial and institutional crises that eroded trust in the political system and in the economy at the exact juncture when new technologies and markets transformed the global economy. Longstanding problems of uneven levels of education and obsolete bureaucratic and judicial practices deepened the division between economically vibrant regions and the rest, causing polarization, political instability and rising public debt. Italy's contemporary malaise makes the country a test-case for understanding the implications of protracted declines in productivity and the flattening of GDP growth for the stability of western democracies, resulting in populism, mistrust and political instability.

Poverty Reduction and Economic Growth: Current and Emerging Issues
Poverty refers to a situation or state in which a person or community lacks the financial resources and necessities essential for maintaining a minimum standard of living. It usually has multiple economic, social, and political causes and effects. Poverty-ridden individuals and households are often unable to make ends meet and they seldom have access to proper housing, clean water, healthy food, and medical facilities. Poverty reduction is a set of economic and humanitarian measures or policies aimed at bringing the poverty-stricken individuals out of poverty. Economic growth is the most effective tool for eliminating poverty and improving the standard of living in developing nations. It has also resulted in better access to opportunities and basic services, creation of new jobs, improved incomes, and increased pace of poverty reduction. This book discusses the current and emerging issues in poverty reduction and economic growth. Coherent flow of topics, student-friendly language, and extensive use of examples make it an invaluable source of knowledge.

The authors investigate and discuss whether there are signs of labor and capital mobility that have helped dampen economic shocks among the regions of the Euro during its short history. The book is of interest to a wide range of researchers in financial economics, macroeconomics and economic policy.
R&d Management Practices and Innovation: A Macroeconomic Perspective
Research and development (R&D) refers to the process undertaken by businesses in order to learn more about their industry. The new technological or scientific knowledge gained through R&D is then applied to produce new or improved products and services that can be used or sold by the business. It is often classified into three categories, including development research, basic research and applied research. It encompasses tasks such as advanced development, process development, technological development, prototyping, technology transfer, fundamental research, concept development and new product development. R&D and innovation is the act of creating and commercializing novel concepts, introducing novel procedures, or altering the way a business generates revenue. It can also be seen as the necessary activity to keep a company viable and competitive in the long run. This book contains a detailed explanation of the management practices and innovation associated with R&D. It is appropriate for students seeking detailed information in this area as well as for experts.
Global Economic Prospects, June 2023
Global growth is projected to slow significantly in the second half of this year, with weakness continuing in 2024. Inflation pressures persist, and tight monetary policy is expected to weigh substantially on activity. The possibility of more widespread bank turmoil and tighter monetary policy could result in even weaker global growth. Rising borrowing costs in advanced economies could lead to financial dislocations in the more vulnerable emerging market and developing economies (EMDEs). In low-income countries, in particular, fiscal positions are increasingly precarious. Comprehensive policy action is needed at the global and national levels to foster macroeconomic and financial stability. Among many EMDEs, and especially in low-income countries, bolstering fiscal sustainability will require generating higher revenues, making spending more efficient, and improving debt management practices. Continued international cooperation is also necessary to tackle climate change, support populations affected by crises and hunger, and provide debt relief where needed. In the longer term, reversing a projected decline in EMDE potential growth will require reforms to bolster physical and human capital and labor-supply growth.
Microfinance and Development in Emerging Economies
Globally, 1.7 billion people live in poverty and are unable to access financial services. They do not have physical collateral and creditors are reluctant to invest in them. Yet in India, microfinance is being used to reduce poverty, empower women, and boost development. In Microfinance and Development in Emerging Economies, Nishi Malhotra argues that the financial services provided to low-income groups or individuals through microfinance and group lending outside the traditional financial system are the best way to combat these problems and address the economic exclusion that blights so many. Using India as a case study, Malhotra examines the Indian government's use of various social welfare programmes to increase both financial literacy and social equality and ultimately achieve sustainable development. Suitable for bankers, teachers, policymakers, and students, this book clearly identifies the practical and theoretical implications of this alternative microfinance model.
