Songs of Sonderling
Songs of Sonderling is the story of Jacob Sonderling's unique contributions to Jewish liturgical music. Rabbi Sonderling was many things: a descendant of Chassidic rebbes, a rationalist, a Reform rabbi, a Zionist, an army chaplain, a celebrated orator, an artistic soul. From his early career at the Hamburg Temple and German Army service in World War I, to his wandering years in the Eastern United States and founding of the Society for Jewish Culture-Fairfax Temple in Los Angeles, Sonderling cultivated a unique aesthetic vision of Judaism, a "five-sense appeal." Jonathan L. Friedmann and John F. Guest document and analyze Sonderling's experience and expression of Judaism through music. Rabbi Sonderling's vision yielded liturgical commissions from exiled Viennese Jewish composers who arrived in Los Angeles in the 1930s and 1940s. Through these musical settings, activities at the Fairfax Temple, and involvement with the Los Angeles campus of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Sonderling made an indelible mark on the city's Jewish community and the wider musical world. Songs of Sonderling focuses on the commissions Sonderling made from 1938 to 1945: Ernst Toch's Cantata of the Bitter Herbs, Arnold Schoenberg's Kol Nidre, Erich Wolfgang Korngold's A Passover Psalm and Prayer, and Eric Zeisl's Requiem Ebraico. Through musical analyses and an examination of Sonderling's career in Los Angeles, Friedmann and Guest contribute to the study of Jewish liturgical music, to Jewish history in the American West, to Jewish identity in the twentieth century, and to Jewish diaspora writ large.
The Catholic Beethoven
The Catholic Beethoven offers a new view of Beethoven and his religious music by demonstrating that both the composer and his sacred works were influenced by the German Catholicism of his era to a greater extent than has been thought. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, most accounts of Beethoven's religious attitudes have assumed that, as a child of the Enlightenment, the composer was estranged from the Catholicism into which he was born, adhering instead to an idiosyncratic and unorthodox religious outlook that was suspicious of dogma and tradition. This assumption has often resulted in the critical marginalization of Beethoven's religious music, with the notable exception of the Missa solemnis, which is usually included among his most important compositions only by being reinterpreted as a humanist or universalist work transcending its superficial identity as a setting of the Catholic Mass. This book argues that such views have relied on an inadequately complex view of the Enlightenment, which presumes incorrectly that the Enlightenment was monolithically opposed to traditional religious belief. Beethoven's religious outlook was primarily shaped by ideas associated with the German Catholic Enlightenment, a particular strand of the Enlightenment that sought to reconcile traditional Catholic beliefs with elements from more familiar, secular versions of the Enlightenment. The book uses the central concerns of this Catholic Enlightenment as a framework for interpreting Beethoven's sacred works-not just the Missa solemnis, but also the Mass in C, Christus am ?lberge, and the Gellert Lieder-as well as documentary evidence usually cited in relation to the composer's religious outlook. In addition, it will situate the content of a number of religious books in his library within the religious-historical context of his time. Particular attention is devoted to Beethoven's interest in the writings of Johann Michael Sailer (1751-1832), one of the most important figures in German Catholicism during Beethoven's time, with whom the composer also had a personal connection.

Meinrad Sch羹tter is one of the most intriguing of recent Swiss composers. His music offers a highly personal synthesis of 20th-century European modernisms, from Hindemith to Bart籀k, Stravinsky, Berg and beyond. Meinrad Sch羹tter (1910-2006) is one of the most intriguing of recent Swiss composers. He was born in Chur in the Swiss Alps, studied at the Zurich Conservatoire, attended Paul Hindemith's classes at Zurich University, and enjoyed early support from the conductor Hermann Scherchen. Sch羹tter's wayward attitude towards authority resulted in his debarment from the Swiss Musicians' Association and its manifold opportunities for advancement, but avid study and a thirst to acquaint himself with the latest trends led to his developing an idiosyncratic style, initially Neo-Classical but later featuring elements of serialism and even aleatory. After retirement, Sch羹tter enjoyed a remarkable Indian summer, bringing forth several dozen songs, chamber and orchestral works. Many have now been recorded, garnering enthusiastic reviews. This book is the first in English to examine his life and music.
The Polyphonic Mass in Early Lutheran Central Europe
Investigates the reception and performance history of the polyphonic mass in Lutheran Central Europe from ca. 1540-1600. The five-movement polyphonic Mass Ordinary emerged from the cultural and liturgical practices of medieval Roman Catholicism and became the pre-eminent large-scale musical genre of early modern Europe. By the end of the sixteenth century, the polyphonic mass remained a core musical genre among Catholics despite gaining widespread popularity within a new institution fundamentally opposed to the Catholic Church and best known for its cultivation of vernacular liturgical music: the Lutheran church. This book investigates the reception and performance history of the polyphonic mass in Lutheran Central Europe from ca. 1540-1600. Through careful source analysis, this study presents examples of polyphonic masses composed in both Lutheran and Catholic contexts that contradict the conventional conception of the Mass Ordinary as a fixed five-movement cycle with unaltered Latin texts. The book draws on sixteenth-century liturgical documents such as Lutheran church orders and hundreds of primary printed and manuscript sources of polyphonic masses; some of these items are well-known in Renaissance musicology source studies while others have received little to no scholarly attention. The book's findings invite reconsideration of how the Mass Ordinary genre is defined, allow for a discussion whether the polyphonic mass should be considered a bi-confessional genre, and present a cohesive examination of early modern liturgical music in the Germanic and western Slavic regions. Hazzan Mordecai Gustav Heiser
When Gilya Gerda Schmidt met him in 1986, Cantor Heiser had spent forty-six of his eighty-one years as a US citizen and was well-acquainted with mourning. Heiser had assumed the cantorate at Congregation B'nai Israel in the East End of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1942. A master of the cantor's art, he was renowned for his style, elegant choir and service arrangements, and rich, dolesome voice, which seemed to pass effortlessly into hearers' hearts. But this book is more than a memorial to Heiser. Schmidt melds decades of archival research, conservation efforts, family interviews, and trips to Jerusalem and Berlin into a critical reconstruction of the life and vision of Hazzan Mordecai Gustav Heiser in the multiple contexts that shaped him. Coming of age in Berlin in the afterglow of the Second German Empire meant that young Gustav had tasted European Jewish culture in a rare state of refinement and modernity. But by January 30, 1940, when he reached New York with his wife, Elly, and two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Judith, Cantor Heiser had lost nearly all of his living family relations to the extermination programs of the German Reich, after narrowly surviving a brief incarceration at Sachsenhausen. While Cantor Heiser's art was steeped in nineteenth-century tradition, Schmidt contends that Heiser's music was a powerful affirmation of Jewish life in the twentieth century. In a final chapter, Schmidt describes his influence on the American cantorate and American culture and society.

This study explores Kondakarnoie Pienie, a musical phenomenon that flourished in Kievan Rus' from the 11th-13th centuries and is preserved in only five manuscripts. Stimulated by the global digitization initiatives undertaken by the major holdings East and West, previously inaccessible primary source material has come available. As a result the current investigation is a reassessment of earlier work accomplished. It addresses aspects of musical palaeography, liturgical context and function, and performance practice. The music examined is the chant cycles for the Forefeast, Christmas and Epiphany celebrations, a substantial body of comparable musical material that furnishes explicit evidence of the appropriation of Byzantine cathedral chanting practices by the medieval Slavs.

Christian musicians among the Xerente (pronounced Sheh-織ren-teh) have created their own fusion genre(s) to express their faith, communicate the gospel, and edify their churches. Their music includes elements from their cultural tradition as well as from (secular) genres of the northeastern region of Brazil. Is it, then, authentically Xerente? As we discuss in this book, independent of tangible markers or its long history, the authenticity of an art form can be demonstrated through a number of connections with the community and signposted by its meaning and function among the people, as well as the competence and agency of the people in their artistic choices.

God Gave Rock and Roll to You
An entertaining history of the soundtrack of American evangelical Christianity Few things frightened conservative white Protestant parents of the 1950s and the 1960s more than thought of their children falling prey to the "menace to Christendom" known as rock and roll. The raucous sounds of Elvis Presley and Little Richard seemed tailor-made to destroy the faith of their young and, in the process, undermine the moral foundations of the United States. Parents and pastors launched a crusade against rock music, but they were fighting an uphill battle. Salvation came in a most unlikely form. Well, maybe not that unlikely--the long hair, the beards, the sandals--but still a far cry from the buttoned-up, conservative Protestantism they were striving to preserve. Yet when a revival swept through counterculture hippie communities of the West Coast in the 1960s and 1970s a new alternative emerged. Known as the Jesus Movement--and its members, more colloquially, as "Jesus freaks"--the revival was short-lived. But by combining the rock and folk music of the counterculture with religious ideas and aims of conservative white evangelicals, Jesus freaks and evangelical media moguls gave birth to an entire genre known as Contemporary Christian Music (CCM). By the 1980s and 1990s, CCM had grown into a massive, multimillion-dollar industry. Contemporary Christian artists were appearing on Top 40 radio, and some, most famously Amy Grant, crossed over into the mainstream. And yet, today, the industry is a shadow of what it once was. In this book, Leah Payne traces the history and trajectory of CCM in America and, in the process, demonstrates how the industry, its artists, and its fans shaped--and continue to shape--conservative, (mostly) white, evangelical Protestantism. For many outside observers, evangelical pop stars, interpretive dancers, puppeteers, mimes, and bodybuilders are silly expressions of kitsch. Yet Payne argues that these cultural products were sources of power, meaning, and political activism. Throughout, she draws on in-depth interviews with CCM journalists, publishers, producers, and artists, as well as archives, sales and marketing data, fan magazines, merchandise--everything that went into making CCM a thriving subculture. Ultimately, Payne argues, CCM spurred evangelical activism in more potent and lasting ways than any particular doctrine, denomination, culture war, or legislative agenda had before.

Numerous musical settings show that David, the psalmist, musician, king and agent of the Holy Spirit, provided the most enduring model of kingship; but in the final decade of his life, as Louis dedicated the Kingdom to the Virgin Mary, the model of 'Christ the King' became even more potent - a model reflected in a flowering of musical publication and famous paintings by Vouet and Champaigne.

Music composition is like a journey that leads to many destinations. You can choose to go in only one direction at a time and try out the others some other day!. The author gracefully believes that words only, cannot express the great and mighty things that the Almighty God has accomplished for mankind at Calvary during His physical presence, dwelling and moving freely among us about two thousand years ago. And further to this, the best piece of praise and worship possible, should be written for Him in recognition of this great gesture for the redemption of mankind. Unfortunately that glorious best of the very best piece is still yet to come. Aspiring to get to it someday by GOD's special grace and anointing!.
Redeemer the Power & the Glory Songbook 3
The Redeemer songbook series continues with the release of Songbook 3. The work was written for the edification of the body of Christ and for use in church services worldwide to enhance God's WORD coming from the pulpit and also for rendition on the concert platform. Listening to gospel music is important for faith building and to keep the believer's mind focused on God's WORD and not thwarted by the enemy. This songbooks stresses the importance of the Redeeming God's Power and Glory. Prior to Songbook 3, Songbooks 1 & 2 have been published. These songbooks are a compilation of many of my works performed by both secular and religious / church choral groups and orchestras around the world. Each songbook contains 80 strong pieces. The music style is both contemporary gospel and classical music forms. Audio CDs are available in online music stores. The CD jacket for each songbook contains 4CDs each. Each CD contains 20 songs respectively. The songbooks were written for choral groups to make their choices for rendition during their concert programs and church services as necessary.Early one Sunday morning, I went to worship in another church. Hoping to be blessed hearing some of my pieces rendered by other choirs in other churches. I entered a church I guess will have a beautiful sanctuary choir skilled enough to perform some of these works. I was really impressed when two popular singers well known to the Church music community took on the stage with the Duet. 'River of Life' an excerpt from Redeemer the Power and The Glory Songbook One at the church I entered. It was such a beautiful rendition.Also, I was invited to a popular Radio Talk show the other day to share my experiences in compositions and also to offer advice on how choral/orchestra music can be further developed in a developing world. At one point during the talk show, one of the listeners called in. He mentioned a concert was organized to perform excerpts from the Redeemer with a 1000 voiced choir! Wow! They sang the chorus from Songbook One, Awake Israel Be Strong, 'Save thy Children' among others. Little would one realize how well these works have been blessing the lives of the listeners to the Glory of God. Following these successes however, it gives me great pleasure to release my latest work. 'Redeemer the Power and the Glory Songbook 3. Unlike Songbook 2 which was designed to contain more of toe tapping contemporary gospel and pop choral works, I am happy to mention that Songbook 3 contains both core classical/traditional and contemporary classical pieces sandwiched with modern day contemporary gospel pop tunes to create desired varieties. Recall that lots of great and renowned artists around the world actually started their career within the Church as choir boys and choir girls. I started playing the pipe organ for large congregations when I was still a boy struggling to make my legs reach the floor pedals below the organ seat.. Spending several hours in church rehearsing and composing pieces after pieces of American/European nature with African undertones sometimes writing songs in Nigerian Major Languages. Ask yourself the question, if Beethoven or Handel or Bach etc. were Africans, how would they have composed their music? How would they have created the musical phrases which truly reflect the rise and fall in the accent of the African languages and also the uniqueness of the beat patterns of the drums expressing the richness of the African Music Traditions? The Redeemer the Power and the Glory Songbook series covers Biblical events about our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of mankind. The lyrics reflects Christ teachings. Redeemer Songbook series celebration of tonality is both pragmatic and cultural. It is the composer's desire that this work will bless everyone mightily in Jesus Name. Amen !

Following the release and successful performances of Redeemer the power and the glory songbooks 1 & 2 & 3 respectively, I am very happy to announce the release of Redeemer Songbook 4 in this series of Choral works designed for use in Churches Sunday worship services and all other Christian praise and worship gatherings as well as a delightful repertoire for the Concert Platform in our Universities and Institutions of Higher Learning and above all for future generations. Over the years, All Christian faith, regardless of denominations from all works of life have enjoyed listening to and performing the works of early church composers. Today, there is still appetite for great Choral Works performances in congregations around the world. It's indeed a fact that new choral works telling of the greatness of our God is required in our worship services. The Psalmist says 'Sing a new song unto the LORD'. Praise and Worship constitute a significant portion in our Worship services in churches. Music touches the inner-most part of the heart with un-ending joy and happiness. Musical phrases and lyrics when played and sung tend to drive the messages home more readily than spoken words. Keep in mind that both are meant to complement each other, in the ministry of the Church. One major challenge facing the Church Music Composer is the art of keeping music compositions and writings as simple as possible for members of the choir who do not understand how to read musical notations but rather feel more comfortable learning by ear and by transcribed tonic solfas. Members of the Church Choral Music and other Choral Societies are mostly volunteers and not Musicologists and University Music Graduates and as such require lots of assistance in learning for a perfect rendition of these works. In conclusion, the objective of Redeemer the power and the glory Songbook series is to provide new songs both classical and contemporary for use in Church Services all over the world. It's indeed wonderful to sing a new song unto the LORD our God every day of our life. Morning, by morning, new mercies we see from God!. For our God cherish the Praises and Worship of His people. God moves in mysterious ways. Singing and making melodies in your heart to Him could be a way of getting your own miracle from the Eternal King of Glory! Our GOD is building an army of praise generals that will usher in His glorious second coming back here on earth with end-less shouts of praise and adoration! Immaculate Sounds
In Catholic doctrine, the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary is the belief that Mary, the mother of Christ, was exempt from original sin from the moment of her conception, and thereby a co-redeemer alongside her son. Praise for this complicated devotion took place in Europe throughout the medieval period and resounded in the Americas with the founding of the first convent in Mexico City under the Order of the Immaculate Conception in 1540. All other orders of nuns in New Spain branched out from this convent, spreading the Marian devotion throughout the region. In this book, author Cesar D. Favila argues that the sonification of virginity and the Virgin Mary was fundamental to the promotion of the Immaculate Conception doctrine, and that this was part of a complex network of sonified practices in the lives of New Spanish nuns. These "immaculate sounds," a term Favila uses for the cloistered nuns' idealized vocalizations as well as the expression of doctrinal rhetoric through musical metaphors, echoed the highly regulated realm of the convent and played a pivotal role in mediating between the lives of New Spanish nuns and the expectation that they would save the secular world with their vocalized prayers. In addition to the sonification of discipline, Favila shows that immaculate sounds also enhanced the nuns' engagement with their religious practices and facilitated embodied and spiritual engagement with Catholic doctrines. Throughout his study, he delves into rarely studied music sources from seventeenth- and eighteenth-century New Spain alongside the rulebooks, devotional literature, and nuns' biographies that regulated convent life and inspired nuns' hymns. In doing so, Favila brings together a narrative of salvation that shines a light on the musical lives of nuns and locates women's agency within a hierarchical society that silenced some women and required others to sing. With easy delivery of digital files one musical selection links to a similar one. Who can know what a nearby listener fancies? Personal choice is a lonely search for truth and for music. What role did God give to music in Israel's life and ritual when priests were to play trumpets or rams' horns and Levites, appointed by David, were to use lyres, harps, and cymbals to lead worshipers in song? How did Jesus want music to be used? Did Paul identify the best use of music when he instructed disciples to raise their voices in thanksgiving so the Spirit could use their songs to build each other up in faith and service to God?
