Social and Camp-meeting Songs, for the Pious

2025/05/19 出版

At the crossroads of frontier revivalism and early American hymnody, Social and Camp-Meeting Songs, for the Pious offers a glimpse into the fervent devotional culture of the early 19th century. Published in Baltimore during the height of the Second Great Awakening, this compact hymnal-presented here in a faithful facsimile of its 1822 fourth edition-was designed not for choirs or cathedral pews, but for the converted, the gathered, and the convicted. This collection of texts reflects a transitional moment when hymnals often appeared without musical notation, relying instead on memory, oral tradition, and communal repetition. Many of its lyrics, already popular hymns, later found a lasting home in the shape-note tradition, . But it is the source of at least one original song, the enduring favorite "Brethren, We Have Met to Worship," first printed here in 1817 and now sung across traditions as "Holy Manna."This facsimile edition includes a brief introductory essay and an appendix cross-referencing more than sixty of the hymns with their later appearances in shape-note tunebooks such as The Southern Harmony, The Sacred Harp, The Valley Pocket Harmonist, and others. It is a fascinating companion for those interested in early American religious folk song, the roots of Sacred Harp singing, or the grassroots devotional culture that shaped the nation's musical landscape.

Traditional Tunes and Lived Religion in the Protestant Church on the Central Moluccas, Indonesia

Jip,Lensink  著
2025/03/05 出版

In the southeast of Indonesia, on the Moluccas, theologians are developing contextual theologies for the Moluccan Protestant church. The Moluccas were colonized by the Dutch for more than three centuries. As an effort of religious decolonization, Moluccan theologians aim to better connect Christianity with the cultural realities of congregants. This book is about the contextualization of church music. Christian Izaac Tamaela proposed and instigated the transposition of Moluccan traditional music to the Moluccan Protestant church. In the book, the author asks how traditional music, as framed within contextual Moluccan theology, is interrelated with lived religion. Vivid descriptions of liturgical practices, music traditions, and personal encounters map the entanglements between Moluccan culture, Moluccan Protestantism, and Moluccan music. The author traces the theological idea of traditional church music to lived religious practices and attitudes among ministers, musicians, and congregants. The resonances and dissonances of this process show the continuous transformation of Moluccan traditional music. For a selection of the audio-visual material, visit the website www.jiplensink.nl/tt.

Re-Reading the Beethoven Violin Sonatas

Daniel,Tong  著
Boydell Press 出版
2025/01/22 出版

New readings of the ten Beethoven sonatas for piano and violin, embracing both the performer's interpretation and the analyst's rigour. This book provides new readings of the ten Beethoven sonatas for piano and violin, many of which have been given surprisingly little attention by scholars to date. This may be because nine of the sonatas are relatively early works, written between 1797-1803, with only the final sonata, Op.96 (1812) standing apart. However, within these ten works, Beethoven demonstrates numerous aspects of his musical personality and compositional style. The analyses in this book engage with postmodern concerns such as hermeneutics, intertextuality, gender, humour, narratology and human interest, revealing characteristics within these sonatas that have been slow to come to light. Here are examples of the Beethovenian narrative that do not always encapsulate heroic struggle and triumph; in many of the sonatas we find a witty, smiling composer, at odds with the growling Beethoven iconography. Works within the violin sonata cycle interrogate the hypermasculine Beethoven trope, before the last sonata is explored via a host of intertextual relationships with a body of early Romantic repertoire that emerged after Beethoven's death. Embracing both the performer's interpretation and the analyst's rigour (or vice versa), this work offers methodologies for performer's analysis whilst acknowledging that both disciplines are essential to any project that seeks to address the nature of music as it is experienced in time.

Music and Liturgy for the Benedicamus Domino C.800-1650

2025/01/08 出版

For more than a millenium, singers in churches, monasteries, and private chapels across Europe have closed their worship with the joyful musical exclamation Benedicamus Domino ('Let us Bless the Lord'). This moment has sounded in song many times a day: at the end of the Mass, the Office hours, outside the church walls in celebratory processions, as well as in informal sacred, devotional, and festive contexts. Benedicamus Domino was uniquely associated with an unprecedented amount of creative freedom in the sacred rituals of the Christian West: plainchant melodies could be adopted at will from other parts of the liturgy, and this moment inspired a proliferation of poetic and polyphonic elaborations from the eleventh century on. This collection of essays brings together interdisciplinary contributions from eighteen scholars, illuminating the wide range of ritual, musical, poetic, manuscript, and generic contexts for the Benedicamus Domino versicle in the period c.800-1650. Individual chapters engage with the evidence of liturgical commentaries and Patristic texts, Ordines, and hagiographies. They present and analyse musical and textual embellishments of the Benedicamus Domino, as well as their written traces and material contexts, with several sources discovered or discussed in detail here for the first time. Encompassing a wide geographical and generic scope, this volume reveals unsuspected continuities and contrasts in the history of the Benedicamus Domino versicle in medieval and early modern Europe.

Songs of Sonderling

2025/01/07 出版

Songs of Sonderling is the story of Jacob Sonderling's unique contributions to Jewish liturgical music. Rabbi Sonderling was many things: a descendant of Chassidic rebbes, a rationalist, a Reform rabbi, a Zionist, an army chaplain, a celebrated orator, an artistic soul. From his early career at the Hamburg Temple and German Army service in World War I, to his wandering years in the Eastern United States and founding of the Society for Jewish Culture-Fairfax Temple in Los Angeles, Sonderling cultivated a unique aesthetic vision of Judaism, a "five-sense appeal." Jonathan L. Friedmann and John F. Guest document and analyze Sonderling's experience and expression of Judaism through music. Rabbi Sonderling's vision yielded liturgical commissions from exiled Viennese Jewish composers who arrived in Los Angeles in the 1930s and 1940s. Through these musical settings, activities at the Fairfax Temple, and involvement with the Los Angeles campus of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Sonderling made an indelible mark on the city's Jewish community and the wider musical world. Songs of Sonderling focuses on the commissions Sonderling made from 1938 to 1945: Ernst Toch's Cantata of the Bitter Herbs, Arnold Schoenberg's Kol Nidre, Erich Wolfgang Korngold's A Passover Psalm and Prayer, and Eric Zeisl's Requiem Ebraico. Through musical analyses and an examination of Sonderling's career in Los Angeles, Friedmann and Guest contribute to the study of Jewish liturgical music, to Jewish history in the American West, to Jewish identity in the twentieth century, and to Jewish diaspora writ large.

The Catholic Beethoven

2025/01/03 出版

The Catholic Beethoven offers a new view of Beethoven and his religious music by demonstrating that both the composer and his sacred works were influenced by the German Catholicism of his era to a greater extent than has been thought. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, most accounts of Beethoven's religious attitudes have assumed that, as a child of the Enlightenment, the composer was estranged from the Catholicism into which he was born, adhering instead to an idiosyncratic and unorthodox religious outlook that was suspicious of dogma and tradition. This assumption has often resulted in the critical marginalization of Beethoven's religious music, with the notable exception of the Missa solemnis, which is usually included among his most important compositions only by being reinterpreted as a humanist or universalist work transcending its superficial identity as a setting of the Catholic Mass. This book argues that such views have relied on an inadequately complex view of the Enlightenment, which presumes incorrectly that the Enlightenment was monolithically opposed to traditional religious belief. Beethoven's religious outlook was primarily shaped by ideas associated with the German Catholic Enlightenment, a particular strand of the Enlightenment that sought to reconcile traditional Catholic beliefs with elements from more familiar, secular versions of the Enlightenment. The book uses the central concerns of this Catholic Enlightenment as a framework for interpreting Beethoven's sacred works-not just the Missa solemnis, but also the Mass in C, Christus am ?lberge, and the Gellert Lieder-as well as documentary evidence usually cited in relation to the composer's religious outlook. In addition, it will situate the content of a number of religious books in his library within the religious-historical context of his time. Particular attention is devoted to Beethoven's interest in the writings of Johann Michael Sailer (1751-1832), one of the most important figures in German Catholicism during Beethoven's time, with whom the composer also had a personal connection.

Robert Schumann's Leipzig Chamber Works

2024/09/26 出版

The first in-depth study in almost half a century of Robert Schumann's multi-movement Leipzig chamber works, this book offers novel and diverse encounters with the three Op. 41 String Quartets, the Op. 44 Piano Quintet, and the Op. 47 Piano Quartet. The volume adopts a two-pronged approach, exploring the reception of this music from both composer- and listener-oriented perspectives. On the one hand, it shows how this repertory illuminates Schumann's response to certain past and contemporary composers; to his own youthful, experimental past; and to various literary and cultural influences. At the same time, the book explores how different people have heard this music: listeners in Schumann's own day and beyond, in both Germanic and non-Germanic regions, and comprising the voices of critics, performers, audiences, even figures in disciplines outside of music. Such reception stories yield new insights into whether these works represent a more conservative or progressive mindset for the composer. The book thus offers a more nuanced understanding of Schumann's stylistic development. Balancing new critical and contextual frameworks with close analyses of selected movements in a wide range of forms, author Julie Hedges Brown offers new pathways for rehearing the Leipzig chamber repertory.

Meinrad Sch羹tter

Toccata Press 出版
2024/08/02 出版

Meinrad Sch羹tter is one of the most intriguing of recent Swiss composers. His music offers a highly personal synthesis of 20th-century European modernisms, from Hindemith to Bart籀k, Stravinsky, Berg and beyond. Meinrad Sch羹tter (1910-2006) is one of the most intriguing of recent Swiss composers. He was born in Chur in the Swiss Alps, studied at the Zurich Conservatoire, attended Paul Hindemith's classes at Zurich University, and enjoyed early support from the conductor Hermann Scherchen. Sch羹tter's wayward attitude towards authority resulted in his debarment from the Swiss Musicians' Association and its manifold opportunities for advancement, but avid study and a thirst to acquaint himself with the latest trends led to his developing an idiosyncratic style, initially Neo-Classical but later featuring elements of serialism and even aleatory. After retirement, Sch羹tter enjoyed a remarkable Indian summer, bringing forth several dozen songs, chamber and orchestral works. Many have now been recorded, garnering enthusiastic reviews. This book is the first in English to examine his life and music.

Cello Notes

Mavis,Himes  著
2024/08/01 出版

When Mavis Himes, a psychoanalyst with an established practice of over forty years, began to contemplate retirement, she decided to learn to play the cello. From meeting her teacher in an overcrowded caf矇, through the demanding task of cello practice with its persistent strains and stresses on the body, Himes found a growing appreciation of music's power on her own well-being. An unfortunate bicycle accident resulting in serious injuries to her left arm threw her musical world upside down, forcing her to discontinue lessons. No longer certain if she'd be able to continue playing, Himes bounced back with persistence and physiotherapy. However, the setback from an unhealed fracture placed her progress once again in jeopardy.Cello Notes: Music and the Urgency of Time is a musical journey later in life that demonstrates the importance of dreaming big and following one's desires at any age. It is also a testament to the natural rhythm of healing, both physically and mentally, and the lessons to be discovered in the face of obstacles.

The Polyphonic Mass in Early Lutheran Central Europe

Boydell Press 出版
2024/07/17 出版

Investigates the reception and performance history of the polyphonic mass in Lutheran Central Europe from ca. 1540-1600. The five-movement polyphonic Mass Ordinary emerged from the cultural and liturgical practices of medieval Roman Catholicism and became the pre-eminent large-scale musical genre of early modern Europe. By the end of the sixteenth century, the polyphonic mass remained a core musical genre among Catholics despite gaining widespread popularity within a new institution fundamentally opposed to the Catholic Church and best known for its cultivation of vernacular liturgical music: the Lutheran church. This book investigates the reception and performance history of the polyphonic mass in Lutheran Central Europe from ca. 1540-1600. Through careful source analysis, this study presents examples of polyphonic masses composed in both Lutheran and Catholic contexts that contradict the conventional conception of the Mass Ordinary as a fixed five-movement cycle with unaltered Latin texts. The book draws on sixteenth-century liturgical documents such as Lutheran church orders and hundreds of primary printed and manuscript sources of polyphonic masses; some of these items are well-known in Renaissance musicology source studies while others have received little to no scholarly attention. The book's findings invite reconsideration of how the Mass Ordinary genre is defined, allow for a discussion whether the polyphonic mass should be considered a bi-confessional genre, and present a cohesive examination of early modern liturgical music in the Germanic and western Slavic regions. It offers interesting reading to scholars and students of European Renaissance and religious music, as well as Reformation studies more generally.

Music and Spirituality

2024/07/01 出版

The composer Sir James MacMillan has often referred to music as 'the most spiritual of the arts', and for many people, regardless of religious affiliation, this rings true. In listening to music, we are drawn to dimensions of human experience beyond the material. This collection brings together leading scholars from various disciplines - including Christian theology, musicology, and psychology and neuroscience - to interrogate the intimate relationship between music and spirituality.Organised in three parts - theological approaches, empirical methods, and Christian worship - the volume covers a vibrant array of topics. From examining how the Covid-19 pandemic has reshaped the profile of contemporary worship to investigating the spiritual effects of bodily positioning in liturgical spaces, from exploring spiritual experience through heart and breathing activity, electrodermal activity, and saliva samples to comparing the spiritual experiences of British Methodists with Welsh sporting fans, these essays attend to the lived reality of people's perceived spiritual experiences through music. This collection will be an invaluable resource for scholars in the growing field of Christian theology and music, and will serve as a cornerstone for future research at the intersection of theology, music, and psychology and neuroscience. It will also appeal to anyone curious about why music consistently, across cultures, occupies a unique space bridging the material and spiritual dimensions of human life.
