Temporary Stages III
Theatre activities ask adolescents to empathize with those who are different from themselves. Recognizing divergence invites self-reflection and kindles compassion. These actions tap students' inner cores while at the same time deepening their understanding of privilege, a key component of critical consciousness.Through the lens of critical pedagogy and feminist theory, this book explores the mutually reinforcing development of spirituality and emerging critical consciousness fostered by high school theatre experience. By examining her own public high school theatre program through description, analysis and interpretation, Gonzalez explores why and how theatre work can simultaneously fortify teens' spiritual growth while activating dawning awareness of the socio-political dynamics in their own lives and the world around them. The book includes the original one-act play Free to Fly, which introduces young people to the dangers of sex trafficking of minors.Temporary Stages III will appeal especially to secondary theatre teachers, theatre education pre-service teachers, and graduate students studying theatre pedagogy and critical cultural theory.

Travesty Actors
Examining theatrical performance under Stalinist cultural mandates Talk of Joseph Stalin's "show trials," the public prosecutions in Moscow's Hall of Columns in the late 1930s, is so familiar as to obscure the relationship between actual shows--in the Soviet Union's major theaters--and politics. Travesty Actors: Self and Theater in Stalinist Culture examines theatrical performance within the context of the Soviet cultural establishment's fashioning of a "genuine Soviet person." Boris Wolfson focuses on prominent and controversial plays by artists including Aleksandr Afinogenov, Mikhail Bulgakov, Yuri Olesha, and Natalia Sats and the efforts of theater companies, like the Moscow Arts Theater, the Meyerhold Theater, and the Central Children's Theater, to adhere to this cultural mandate while grappling with repression, censorship, and conflicting interpretations of its aims. Drawing on archival materials, diaries and memoirs and eyewitness accounts, Wolfson greatly illuminates the achievements of Soviet theater during this harsh period and the cultural significance of artistic theories and practices for articulating and enacting ideological programs.
The Oxford Handbook of Screen Comedy
The Oxford Handbook of Screen Comedy offers a rich sampling of the most current research and evolving trends in a vast and growing field-the study of humor and comedy in movies, television, streaming content, social media, and other forms of mediated comedy. The thirty new essays in this volume, written by leading scholars and emerging researchers, are guideposts to where the field is now and where it is heading. By its very nature, comedy eludes definition and crosses boundaries. Trying to grab the wriggling creature and subject it to analysis presents special challenges. The contributors featured in this volume apply a range of methods to analyse case histories, interpret trends, and theorize the changing face of comedy. Some celebrate the diverse pleasures of laughter; some critique its more nefarious practices and warn of salient dangers. Together, they bring insights from feminist, black, and queer studies, focus on issues of identity and ideology, extend and revise notions of historical development, and follow the emergence and migration of comic forms in Latin America, China, North Korea, and South Africa. The broad aim of this book is to increase awareness of these exciting studies and inspire more productive exploration as the field continues to grow.

Translating Silent Cinema
Translating Silent Cinema examines closely the translation, adaptation and reception of three silent films in English, German, and Yiddish to argue that the study of film translation should extend beyond textual translation to a wide selection of primary materials and the consideration of social, economic, cultural, and historical contexts.Close readings of Der Kaufmann von Venedig [The Merchant of Venice] (1923), Das alte Gesetz [The Old Law] (1923), Ost und West [East and West] (1923) raise a theoretical question: Can we discuss films in the same way that we discuss theater productions, regarding each individual screening as a performance, and compose a "performance history" of different films? As no two film screenings are the same, the author highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to translation that combines insights from Film Studies, Translation Studies, and cultural and historical contexts. Furthermore, in linguistic comparison and in the study of the reception of the films in each language, this book argues that each film is the subject of very different receptions under very different circumstances. It also analyses the relevance of films that were made in Austria and in Germany during the 1920s on Jewish themes to a contemporary debate about immigration, racism, and discrimination. This book's pioneering analysis of the study of film translation encompasses a wide context of multiplicity of ideologies, economic interests, and historical contexts. It will be of interest for readers in Translation Studies (particularly in Audiovisual Translation), Film Studies, German Studies (and German Cinema) and Jewish Studies (and Cinema).

New York Animation 1966-1999
Focusing on a specific period in New York's rich animation history, this book examines the unique styles, movements, personalities, and projects that emerged in the city from 1966 to 1999. During this era, New York became a hub of significant stylistic, cultural, and market transformations, playing a crucial role in nurturing the rise of independent animation as well as the development of digital production platforms and methods. This shift ultimately led to the decline of cel and film techniques, which had been the dominant means of animation production until that time. Nonetheless, it also provided independent artists with opportunities to influence the future direction of animation. A central theme of this work links the efforts in New York to today's creator-driven animation, illustrating a direct connection between New York independents and properties such as Sesame Street, MTV, Adult Swim, and The Simpsons.

A Fall from Grace
This is the story of Donatien Alphonse Fran癟ois, Marquis de Sade (2 June 1740 - 2 December 1814) a French aristocrat, revolutionary politician, philosopher, and writer famous for his libertine sexuality and lifestyle. His works include novels, short stories, plays, dialogues, and political tracts; in his lifetime some were published under his own name, while others appeared anonymously and Sade denied being their author. He is best known for his erotic works, which combined philosophical discourse with sexual fantasies. He was a proponent of extreme freedom, unrestrained by morality, religion, or law.Sade was incarcerated in various prisons and in an insane asylum for about 32 years of his life; 11 years in Paris (10 of which were spent in the Bastille), a month in the Conciergerie, two years in a fortress, a year in Madelonnettes, three years in Bic礙tre, a year in Sainte-P矇lagie, and 13 years in the Charenton asylum. During the French Revolution he was an elected delegate to the National Convention. Many of his works were written in prison.
TV-Philosophy
This is the first book to explore the hold of TV series on our lives from a philosophical and ethical perspective. Sandra Laugier argues that this vital and ubiquitous expression of popular culture throughout the world is transformative in its effects on the activity of philosophy in everyday life. Drawing on Stanley Cavell's work on film and ordinary experience, Laugier contends that we are deeply affected by the formative role played by the TV series we watch, and by the ways they become interconnected with our daily lives. The philosophical thinking embodied in series empowers individuals in their capacity to experience, understand and appropriate elements of the world, and to educate themselves. Through our relationships with TV series, we develop our own tastes and competences, which are constitutive of our distinct experience of life. 'Series-philosophy' is thus a democratizing force. It also offers us a new ethics, for morality can be found not in general rules and abstract principles but in the narrative texture of characters in everyday situations facing particular ethical problems, and with whom we form attachments that result in our moral education-in sometimes surprising ways.
TV-Philosophy in Action
TV-Philosophy in Action is inspired by philosopher and series-devotee Sandra Laugier's monthly columns published in the French journal Liberation. It is her contribution to the collective reflection on TV series produced by critics, theorists, and the vast mass of individual watchers who evaluate and discuss these programmes every day. The book brings together a selection of articles from Liberation, as well as longer pieces, to demonstrate 'TV-Philosophy in action': Laugier's response as a philosopher-viewer to a range of particularly salient TV shows from the last 20 years, and their relationship to social and political issues of our times. Arranged under a number of important themes-relating to politics, identity, and the stories we tell ourselves about our world-the book shows how TV series provide a rich resource for thinking about our lives, and places them centre-stage as works of art, and of thought, in their own right.
Why Can't I Just Enjoy Things?
Comedian Pierre Novellie was on stage when a heckler suggested he was autistic. Usually, this disruption would be water off a duck's back but two things made this heckler different: first, he was himself autistic. Second, he turned out to be absolutely right. This random encounter led to a diagnosis of autism at the age of 31 that unraveled his world, explained his struggles and answered questions that had bothered him for his entire life: why were the other kids obsessed with Britney Spears instead of The Goon Show? Why don't people ever say what they mean? Why is everyone chewing so loudly? At once a hilarious and insightful journey through autism and neurodivergence, an entertaining explainer for the uninitiated and observational comedy for the neurodiverse, this is the perfect read for anyone who has ever asked themselves: why can't I just enjoy things?

Creativity in Theatre-Making
Creativity in Theatre-Making identifies and explores relationships between theatre-makers. The book seeks to expand opportunities for creativity and collaboration from concept to realisation. It does so by reconsidering the so-called 'technical roles' as 'creators', thereby dismantling the conventional distinction between creative and technical teams. The book challenges this limited views of creativity, offers an alternative model of relationships - a heterarchy - and uses this to underpin a range of techniques and strategies that improve the productivity, well-being, and inclusivity of professional theatre practice. Its core pedagogic principle is that understanding 'why' is more useful than simply knowing 'what'. The book includes an overview of all the major specialist meetings and roles in theatre-making; as well as an in-depth exploration of the key resources used to create Shows and how these can be utilised collaboratively and sustainably. There is also advice on giving and receiving effective feedback during the production process and engaging with creative, financial and safety risks. Throughout the text, the author defines the specialist terminology being used, and offers real-world examples. Creativity in Theatre-Making is for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying for a creative and/or 'technical' role in the theatre industry and related sectors, as well as early- and mid-career theatre professionals looking to appraise or refresh their practice.

Aesthetics of Dalit Theatre
Since Dalit theatre has not garnered as much recognition as the other genres of Dalit literature have, this book, being one of the pioneering works in the field, aims to highlight the genre within the framework of Dalit literature and the Dalit Movement in India. The discussion extensively delves into the historical background, context and aesthetics of Dalit drama and theatre from epistemological viewpoints. To illustrate the subtleties of caste, class and gender in the pan-Indian scenario, the book includes textual understandings of specific Dalit plays, available in English translation, originally written in Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali, covering diverse regions of India. The inclusion of full-length interviews, conducted by the author, of all the living playwrights whose texts have been taken up for analysis, is another substantial facet of this study.
