The Masque of the Red Death
The Masque of the Red Death (1964), the seventh collaboration between producer-director Roger Corman and horror icon Vincent Price, became the crowning achievement for both men, their masterpiece. After the critical and commercial success of House of Usher in 1960, Corman fervently desired to adapt Edgar Allan Poe's story, 'The Masque of the Red Death' as his next project, but the tale took three years to finally become, not Corman's second Poe film, but his second to last. Its long development benefitted the end result, and the story of its making reveals the persistence and vision of Corman, the artist and entrepreneur of classic horror. In this Devil's Advocate, Steve Haberman takes an auteurist approach to the film with Corman as the ultimate author of the work. He explores the emergence of Corman's themes and techniques through directorial control and compares them with the intentions and concerns of the story's original creator, Poe. In his research, Haberman secured both drafts of the script, the first by Charles Beaumont and the last by R. Wright Campbell, consulted published interviews and met with Corman. The result illuminates not only the film but the profound and profoundly dark world views of both Roger Corman and Edgar Allan Poe.
Nature
Nature is a modern variation of the legend of Brigadoon. Its enchantment transported to a valley in Sussex. Two major themes entwine: Obsession and Transformation. Obsession is the abduction of a young, society artist (Fay) from a London Park by a ruthless businessman (Billy Bricks) who then pursues a charm offensive of amusing homily stories. However, the young woman has prior knowledge of Bricks because of a secret shared by her late mother, Lizzie. Transformation is in the form of a valley that behaves as a single, conscious entity: it lures, manipulates and alters the destiny of all its inhabitants. The play, with visionary aspects, moves from thwarted desire and bitter truth to human sacrifice in the grandeur of Nature.
Film Stardom in South East Asia
Throughout Southeast Asia, film stars hold an important place in popular culture. They feature prominently in magazines and newspapers, on billboards and cinema marquees, at public events and premieres, and on the internet and social media. Southeast Asian cinemas have built their own distinctive star systems, which have produced a host of successful icons. These stars often possess the features of stardom commonly noted in film scholarship, such as glamour and charisma, while simultaneously offering nationally and regionally specific inflections of the phenomenon, embodying local tastes, values and ideologies. Stars such as Ananda Everingham in Thailand, P. Ramlee in Malaysia, and Nora Aunor in the Philippines, have all reached significant levels of fame in their respective countries. And yet, there is little academic work focusing on Southeast Asia's stars. This book addresses this neglect by examining how stars shape the marketing, business and economics of their industries, contribute to the meanings and popularity of their films, and give insight into the social and political contexts of life in Southeast Asia.
Performance Making
Surveying how Performance as a form has evolved as a distinct artistic sector to where it is today, Performance Making: a pedagogy for precarious times provides insight into the impact the artform has had across the creative sector and argues for its defence in higher education today.Drawing on over 40+ years' worth of experience as artist and academic, Anna Furse interrogates the ways in which the practice of Performance is truly interdisciplinary, offering a specific creative and critical practice approach. Chapters address the neo-liberal turn and its effect on culture; the history of the emergence of the genre within Performance Studies; the underlying political and cultural message of Performance as independent and necessary; wider philosophical and critical theoretical thinking that can support innovation within the field; and the key principles in the creation of live work such as space, site, scenography, the body, collaboration, and composition. Each chapter includes an essay, case studies, and exercises, empowering students to apply critical thinking to their own work.Focusing on developing creative-critical methodologies in Performance Making at postgraduate level for international cohorts, this textbook will equip students, instructors, and practitioners to contextualise and enrich their Performance practice and leadership.
Amrapali
The Play Amrapali is based on a famous story of the Buddhist period in India. Generally, many stories and characters, as enshrined in the great epics of the Mahabharat and the Ramayan of India, are creatively transferred and have wider acceptability and readership among the public. The incidents of Buddhist and Jain texts scripted in Pali and Prakrit languages strongly impact contemporary life in society and literature. While reviewing the literature of Bauddha Bhikshunis (female mendicants), I came across Ambapali, a Courtesan (Bride of the City) of Vaishali. There was a small state, Vaishali, in North India two thousand and six hundred years ago. It was the Sangha-governed Republic. A vast mango orchard was on the outskirts of this city. One day, while wandering, the mango grove's watchman was startled to see an abandoned newborn girl beneath a mango tree. As per the approval of the state council, the issueless watchman nourished and nurtured the girl. When she found the child under the mango tree, she was named after Amrapali/Ambapali/Amba.Like a celestial nymph, Amrapali became a young nubile girl known for her beauty and charm. She was divinely graced. She was second to none in dancing and singing. Having participated in the Annual Dance Programme, Ambapali was declared the 'Royal Court Dancer' by the State Republic. Because of her extraordinary beauty, the Merchants, the Barons, and the members of the State Council started fighting among themselves to be with her. So, the state Board of Council announced the Courtesan (Bride of the City) for the city's welfare. Every male in the town would have the right to spend time with her.The anecdote of Amrapali's beauty and dance performance of sublime order had been spread worldwide. The insolent Emperor of Magadha, the enemy state of Vaishali Republic, Bimbisara, had disguised himself to enter the palace of Ambapali and received hospitality as a guest for seven days. When the State Council of Vaishali came to know about the matter, it immediately tried to arrest King Bimbisara; Ambapali helped him escape the spot. Then, the love story of Bimbisara and Amrapali was brought to the limelight. The State Council accused Ambapali of developing a love relationship with the King of the enemy state. On the other side, the King of Magadha Bimbisara fought with the Vaishali Republic to marry Ambapali and won the state. However, Ambapali showed hesitation in moving to Magadha and leaving Vaishali. At this time, the most compassionate Lord Buddha reached the city. Ambapali surrendered at the feet of Tathagata Buddha and started to lead the life of a female mendicant with the hope of getting nirvana (Salvation).
Kartemquin Films
How filmmaker-philosophers brought the dream of making documentaries and strengthening democracy to award-winning reality--with help from nuns, gang members, skateboarders, artists, disability activists, and more. The evolution of Kartemquin Films--Peabody, Emmy, and Sundance-awarded and Oscar-nominated makers of such hits as Hoop Dreams and Minding the Gap--is also the story of U.S. independent documentary film over the last seventy years. Patricia Aufderheide reveals the untold story of how Kartemquin developed as an institution that confronts the brutal realities of the industry and society while empowering people to claim their right to democracy. Kartemquin filmmakers, inspired by pragmatic philosopher John Dewey, made their studio a Chicago-area institution. Activists for a more public media, they boldly confronted in their own productions the realities of gender, race, and class. They negotiated the harsh terms and demands of commercial media, from 16mm through the streaming era, while holding fast to their democratic vision. Drawing on archival research, interviews, and personal experience, Aufderheide tells an inspiring story of how to make media that matters in a cynical world.

Raqs in the City
In the city of Cairo, certain spaces bear strong historical associations with belly dance, belly dancers, and professional entertainment in general. Azbakiyah, Imad al-Din Street, and Muhammad Ali Street were all staging grounds for innovations in Egyptian belly dance, as well as in Egyptian music, song, and theater, at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and in the Egyptian popular imagination, these places continue to be linked to entertainment and entertainers. However, research reveals that the ties binding these spaces to entertainment extend much deeper: in some cases, this relationship can be traced back to the Fatimid era. The longstanding associations between belly dance and certain Cairene spaces demand a more in-depth investigation into the nature of this historical interconnection. In this work, the author examines the relationship between belly dance space and belly dancer in the Cairo landscape over the course of the city's history, relying on a theoretical framework informed by Pierre Bourdieu's theory of practice, Michel Foucault's concept of heterotopia, and Mikhail Bakhtin's notion of the carnivalesque. This analysis reveals the mutually constituting relationship between dance, dancers, and the Cairene landscape and explains why and how certain Cairo spaces have retained their centuries-long historical associations with belly dance and its professional practitioners.

The Many Lives of The Purge
With a worldwide box office of more than a half-billion dollars, The Purge franchise has become one of the top horror franchises in film history, with many reviewers wowed by the concept of the series and differentiating on the execution. With five films and a TV show (and another film possibly in the works), the series seems unstoppable. The franchise's main concept taps into underlying tensions throughout America. The vast differences between the films are largely due to the ever-changing casts, including actors, writers, and directors, so that each film has its own unique commentary, sometimes getting right at the nerve of social issues that seem to be best discussed in fictional worlds' metaphors and parables. Acclaimed film and television critics and horror scholars such as Dale Bailey, Jason V. Brock, Chesya Burke, Lisa Morton, Katherine A. Troyer, and Kevin J. Wetmore give a wide range of analyses of just what The Purge films are saying about modern-day America and the world. Essays in the collection examine politics, violence, Trump, Freud, class issues, feminism, race, and more.
Minority Report
Charting new territory in filmmaking technologies and Steven Spielberg's oeuvre, Minority Report (2002) portrays a dystopian near-future that comments on our increasingly science-fictional world and pays homage to the history of SF cinema. In this comprehensive monograph, D. Harlan Wilson recounts the film's inception, production, reception, and afterlife since its release in 2002 while depicting it as a symptom of contemporary media pathology, post-9/11 paranoia, consumer-capitalist aggression, religious mania, and above all, the screen culture that has come to define the human condition. At the same time, Wilson explores the many self-reflexive flourishes that render the movie a commentary on Spielberg's style and the precession of the SF genre.
Reanimating Grief
Reanimating grief is a wide-ranging study of the poetics of bereavement in theatre, literature and song. It examines the way cultural works reanimate the dead in the form of ghosts, memories or scenes of mourning, and uses critical and creative writing to express grief's subjectivity and uniqueness. It covers classic texts from Greek tragedy and Shakespeare to works by Anton Chekhov, Samuel Beckett, Enda Walsh, Sally Rooney and Maggie O'Farrell. The book argues that the return of the dead in theatre and fiction is an act of memorial and an expression of love that illustrates the relationship between art, enchantment and impossibility.

Performing the Nonhuman
This book radically reimagines theatre/performance pedagogy and dramaturgy in response to the accelerating climate crisis. This text is founded upon the principle that the theatre is the most anthropocentric of all the arts: the means of its representation, the human figure, is identical with its conventional object, the human narrative, broadly considered. In order to respond ethically to the climate crisis, it must expand its range to include performing as/in response to the nonhuman. Conrad Alexandrowicz concisely explores theoretical approaches to the other-than-human, found in the work of, among others, Jane Bennett, Timothy Morton, Rosi Braidotti, and Cary Wolfe. The implications of this move are far-reaching and commence with displacing realism from its traditional position of dominance. The practices of 20th century physical theatre visionaries such as Tadeusz Kantor, Jacques Lecoq, and Jerzy Grotowski are revisited and reconsidered for their applicability to forms of theatre that might serve the needs of establishing storytelling deriving from nonhuman phenomena. This logically leads to the matter of responding appropriately to Indigenous ways of knowing and being. The work finds guidance in Indigenous, pre-scientific ways of knowing and being, such as those articulated by Robin Wall Kimmerer (Braiding Sweetgrass, 2013). In contemplating our kinship with vegetative life, the work finds inspiration in the latest research into the ways tree communities communicate, collaborate, and share resources, including the work of Suzanne Simard (Finding the Mother Tree, 2021). It next imagines transformations in how theatre is situated, delivered, and received and considers the ways in which the performer/spectator binary may have to be reconfigured, with particular reference to Grotowski's experiments in participatory theatre. It poses an even more provocative question: is such theorized performance work pointing in the direction of some re-imagined version of ritual and ceremony that may find antecedents in pre-Christian European belief and practice? Finally, it locates such eco-theatre in the realm of healing: climate anxiety, depression, and grief on the part of instructors, students, and artists will require us to consider and activate the healing power of the art form; perhaps, the core purpose of all the arts will shift to support the need to generate solace in times of fear, anger, and uncertainty. This book is intended for instructors, both scholars and performance pedagogues, in theatre and performance studies, as well as graduate and undergraduate students in these areas.

To Stage or Not to Stage Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore (1861‒1941) was a prolific playwright with more than thirty plays to his credit. He is also known for his life-long, passionate engagement with theatre, first at Jorasanko and then at Santiniketan, in multiple roles as actor, director, singer, musician. However, during his own life-time and even after his demise, his experimental plays have proved challenging for directors to stage. Time and again they have been written off as unstageable by prominent theatre makers. Further complications have arisen from the presence of a spectre of authority around Tagore and his plays often promoted by Visva-Bharati, the institution he founded and which held the copyright of his works till 2001. This book travels through time and space intending to untangle the enigma presented by Tagore's plays. The book on one hand immerses itself into the archive of Tagore's plays and his dramaturgy of them in order to problematize the ways in which they have been interpreted. On the other, it also engages with productions of Tagore's plays during and after his life-time to understand the challenges directors have faced while staging them and the strategies they have embraced to circumvent them. While performing a subjective critical reading of the Tagore theatre-archive, an underlying objective of the book remains to understand the very concept of the archive, as it manifests itself in contemporary dramatic theatre.
The Technique of Acting
Take a Master Class from the Woman Who Taught America's Greatest Actors"Acting is stubborn work, necessitating constant attention and a rigorous schedule. It is not for geniuses. It is for people who work step-by-step. While there is no recipe for acting, it does follow a sequence of principles. The ideas and exercises that follow can work for you and give you the courage to fight for your development and craft. . . . More than anything, it is an actor's job to penetrate the playwright's creations-the subtleties and mysteries that the playwright's ideas contain."-from Stella Adler's introduction to The Technique of Acting. As a seminal American acting teacher of the 20th century, Stella Adler shaped the work of such acclaimed actors as Marlon Brando, Selma Hayek, Harvey Keitel, Melanie Griffith, Robert DeNiro, Benicio Del Toro, and Warren Beatty, as well as choreographers Alvin Ailey and Jerome Robbins, among others. As Brando states in his foreword, "Ms Adler presents us with an analysis of the technique of acting that is incisive, intelligent, and long overdue." The Technique of Acting is an introduction to Adler's unique approach to acting, addressing such key elements as imagination, circumstances, actions, working with text, and developing a character, and is replete with examples and exercises that concretely build skills. The book finishes with her compelling narrative of how she came to study intensively with Konstantin Stanislavski. If you love theater and love acting, this work will provide you with invaluable insight and education to both. This book is also available from Echo Point Books as a paperback (ISBN 1648374212).

THEATRE SPORT and the IMPROVISATION MATCH in actor training
This work investigated the relevance of improvisation work with THEATRE-SPORT and IMPROVISATION MATCH in 'stage training' and actor preparation, analyzing its component elements and the dynamics of execution and development that have been consolidated in Canada, Argentina and European countries as an artistic practice. In Brazil there are groups that work with these practices, but in the literature there is little academic research on Theater-Sport and Match. As basic frameworks for studying the importance of improvisation in actor training, the principles of Keith Johnstone's "Theater-Sport" and Gravel and Leduc's "Improvisational Match" are addressed, as well as an experience with games based on Classical Melodrama, as enhancers of the capacity for play and spontaneous flow in actor creations. It is in the 'pleasure of being present' that Theater-Sport and Improvisation Match are developed and enhanced in the player or elementary school student experimenting with theatrical experiences. And it is in this range of possibilities that theater resides, without age limits, beliefs and experiencing the here and now.
Federico Garc穩a Lorca
Lauded as one of the most important poets and playwrights of the twentieth century, Federico Garc穩a Lorca was also an accomplished theatre director with a clear process and philosophy of how drama should be staged. Directing both his own work and that of others, Lorca was also closely involved in the rehearsals for productions of many of his plays, and from his own writings and those of his collaborators, a determined agenda to stimulate audiences and renovate theatre can be seen. This is the first book in English to fully consider Lorca as a director and his rehearsal methodology. The book combines: - A biographical account of Lorca's work as a director and rehearsal leader, revealing his techniques and methods of approach texts;- An exploration of his key writings on and around theatre, drawing on his talks, play introductions, and some of the dramatic works themselves;- The first translation into English of his fragment Drag籀n;- A detailed discussion of Lorca's key productions, Lope de Vega's Fuente Ovejuna (1933) for La Barraca, and his own Yerma (1934).- Specific focus on the practical applications that we can draw from Lorca's methods, both from what survives of his own work and from the accounts of his close collaborators. As a first step towards critical understanding, and as an initial exploration before going on to further, primary research, Routledge Performance Practitioners offer unbeatable value for today's student.
What Ought to Scare You
Using the Hollywood studio system (1931-1960) as a historical center, this book performs close readings of classic horror films (such as Frankenstein and Cat People) while asking the following three questions: What about this movie is weird? What does this movie think ought to scare you? If there weren't monsters in this movie, what would be wrong with these people's lives? These questions guide readers toward the uniqueness of horror films in relation to the way they are classified and the feeling of "horror" that they offer. The horror genre is a collection of culturally-shared elements--words, images, or themes used to signify or evoke horror, because they have been used that way before. Instead of treating movies as examples of the horror genre through how they evoke feelings from viewers, this book locates the meaning of horror within individual films and shows how movies make their own genealogies and complicate their own scares in an evolution of the genre. It argues that classic horror movies are forms of reception of--and resistance to--the ideas of horror that were current in their historical period. Working historically, the author traces movies' interactions with their precursors and co-conspirators to show how they are the agents of historical changes in the genre and in what we take to be horror.
This book is also available from Echo Point Books as a hardcover (ISBN 1648374417).
Empathy and Performance
Empathy and Performance advances a study of empathy and enactments of power by examining works from author-actors whose performances explore the boundaries between two kinship positions. Author Laura V. S獺ndez studies the dramatized dilemma of cultural understanding in "Our America," a notion that refers first to a collective political identity marking a common belonging in the Spanish-speaking America but also alludes to current struggles in the contemporary US. This book sees empathy as an affective response grounded in subjectivity and kinship. S獺ndez argues that to conceptualize empathy one needs to understand how subjects organize, classify, and limit themselves, not only as agents, but also as interpreters. What sort of affiliations do these performances promote? How do they break, reinforce, or queer societal expectations about the Latinx body, the white body, or simply, the staged body? To survey different answers to these queries, S獺ndez studies Indigurrito (Nao Bustamante); Dominicanish (Josefina B獺ez); 癒Bienvenidos Blancos! or Welcome White People! (Alex Torra); the apology delivered by the group Veterans Stand with Standing Rock during protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline; and Kukuli Velarde's body of work, from We, the Colonized Ones to A Mi Vida. In these artistic enactments, which range from 1992 to 2021, the historical construct of boundaries and bodies becomes evident. Following recent work on empathy by Lanzoni, Maibom, Calloway-Thomas, Bloom, Hogan, and Matravers, among others, S獺ndez examines in-group/out-group divisions, the establishment of identity categories through performance, and the exploration of subaltern identities.

"Sir, please put your right hand on the steering wheel," I commanded in a loud clear voice. "No!" The driver answered. I shifted my stance a little, adjusted my hand on my holstered pistol and again in a louder, slightly more authoritative voice commanded the driver follow my instructions. "Sir, put both of your hands on the steering wheel where I can see them. Do it now!"
Performance and theatre
The text is divided into two chapters, which dialogue with the practices of the artistic scene. Chapter One aims to bring the reader up to date with the development of happening, performance art and body art, and some relations with the theatre, especially the transformation of the body into a work of art, where examples can be found in Jackson Pollock, Yves Klein, Allan Kaprow, Tadeusz Kantor, Jerzy Grotowski, among others, who marked the era between the 1960s and 1970s. Chapter Two looks at the procedures of important theatre directors and their relationships and similarities in procedures with performance art and happening, seeking to clarify issues of scene construction in contact with the hybridisation of genres. Resources such as collage and juxtaposition are presented and discussed throughout the text. Procedures for audience participation, the role of the actor and performer, stage space and processes of contemporary stage narrative are discussed. This chapter includes Tadeusz Kantor, Performance Group, Living Theatre, Wooster Group, Gerald Thomas, Teatro da Vertigem, among other examples.
The researcher and the theatre
From tireless research in the Municipal Historical Archive of Santa Maria in Rio Grande do Sul, art history classes at the Franciscan University of Santa Maria and theatre classes in the Todos ao Palco Extension Project (UFN/RS), a personal desire arose to work with theatre as historiographical and cultural research of a region in the interior of the state (RS). With theatre in Santa Maria at the beginning of the 20th century as her main theme, Carla Tha穩s Rodrigues Rosa drew up a pertinent overview of Santa Maria's theatrical life. The author researched, selected and analysed newspaper clippings, photographs, the code of postures and programmes of dramatic performances in order to produce a short, easy-to-understand text that addressed the city's political, economic and cultural scene. He was equally interested in analysing the codes of conduct in force in the city in 1920 in order to confront the cultural and behavioural transformations of the urban society that frequented Santa Maria's theatres, using the history of the railway as a framework for his research. The book captures these cultural changes and observes the relevance of theatre art in this period.
