Idioms, Proverbs, and Sayings... Oh my!
If you're looking for a gift this year that "Gag Gift Forgettables" magazine called, "Simply Stupid!" or "Useless Garbage" then you're in the right place! This year, give the ones you love/hate the gift of a Christmas book! Whether you like them or not, nothing says f-you to a child on xmas morning like the gift of reading or learning. When your dummies are trying to read it, they'll say things like, "Huh?", "I'm dumber now", and "You know this guy?" Neither book did well in terms of sales, likeability, or worthiness, but this Christmas you can stick it to a billionaire by purchasing these cheap gifts and make them produce and ship garbage around the world! Sure, I'll get a few pennies for the sale, but hey, pennies are useless now, too! For a measly $6-$7, you and your family can uncomfortably giggle while opening something the whole family can use to level that dining room table. "Why so cheap?" I've been asked this question so many time. It's simple: I need money to buy my people real gifts, not something dumb like a book. Get yours today before the tariffs hit making reading something of the pastitalreadyis. Get some! Have you ever heard someone say something nonsensical and wondered what the heck they were talking about? Well, you're about to get a book full of that. Maybe you heard someone make a connection between apples and healthcare. Or maybe you didn't know whether you should or should not shake a lamb's tail, or how many times it should be shaken. (Answer: Zero times). What about cats in bags, brown noses, throwing of babies, and the extremely popular question; do all good things come in small packages? These are all idioms, proverbs, or sayings and I'll let you know in two shakes of a lamb's tail what some common, and not so common, sayings mean. I have taken about 80 sayings and given the explanation, the history, and some example usage. I then add my own comedic take on what these different idioms, proverbs, and sayings mean to me or what they make me think of when I hear them. This book will look great on your coffee table or on the back of your toilet where it probably belongs. It's an educational tool on many sayings while providing a funny look at them. You'll learn history you've never wanted to learn, see examples you might never have thought of, and you'll explore the depths of the brain that keeps me fat, dumb, and happy. I hope you enjoy!
Star Wars the Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire
A history of the dark times "So this is how liberty dies--with thunderous applause." -Senator Padm矇 Amidala When Palpatine declared the birth of his new Empire, he expected it would stand for millennia. Instead, it lasted only 24 years. This is the story of how a tyrannical regime rose from the ashes of democracy, ruled the galaxy with an iron fist, and then collapsed into dust. It is a story of war and heroes, of the power of propaganda and the dangers of complacency. But most of all, it is a story of normal people trying to live their lives in the face of a brutal dictatorship. From the ruthlessness of Darth Vader's campaigns to the horrors of the Tarkin Initiative, this book offers fresh new insights into the dark entity at the core of Star Wars. All The Songs Sound The Same
In September 1990, 'semi-legendary' Indie band The Wedding Present released a four-track EP sardonically entitled All The Songs Sound The Same. Now comes the book of the EP, in which over 250 fans and former band members talk about their favourite Wedding Present or Cinerama song and explain that every song does not sound the same.Rather than a track-by-track or album-by-album analysis, fans nominate the one song that means the most to them and why. With an introduction by Wedding Present mainman David Lewis Gedge, the book includes contributions from Sir Keir Starmer KC MP (Leader of the UK Labour Party), Stella Creasy MP, folk singer Amelia Coburn, the Legendary Len Liggins (The Ukrainians), writer & broadcaster Andrew Collins and music writer Mark Beaumont as well as current or former Wedding Present band members including Patrick Alexander, Peter Solowka, Shaun Charman, Terry de Castro, Melanie Howard, Marcus Kain, Charles Layton, Graeme Ramsay, Jon Stewart (from Sleeper) and Danielle Wadey. They, and over 250 other fans, friends and collaborators have between them nominated over 100 different Wedding Present and Cinerama songs, which are dissected and then championed as the best of David Gedge's songwriting.

Embodied Performance
Winner, 2024 Choice Outstanding Academic Title In this groundbreaking book, Matsuoka Shinpei--a leading scholar of noh theater--provides a detailed account of the birth of one of Japan's most celebrated art forms. Although noh has often been associated with the elite, Embodied Performance explores its links to a wider popular culture, revealing a rich and colorful public space where courtiers and commoners mingled. Matsuoka traces noh's connections to popular and religious dances, linked verse, and chigo (beautiful temple boy) culture, emphasizing performance and the body. He describes the world of noh playwright Zeami as well as his views on dramaturgy and performance--and argues that Zeami was once a chigo. Matsuoka shows how religious rituals and cultural forms like ecstatic dance prayer and plays about demons in hell attracted people on the margins. Such activities, Matsuoka contends, drew on the tension between wild acrobatic movement and corporeal restraint, influencing the development of noh as well as the art of flower arranging and the tea ceremony. Janet Goff's translation makes available in English a classic work of Japanese scholarship that will be invaluable to those interested in medieval Japanese culture, noh, and theatrical practice.
From Linz to Langland
Ludwig Wittgenstein was one of the greatest philosophers of all time. Between 1942-1947 he regularly visited Swansea, primarily to see his friend and former student Rush Rhees, who was lecturing at Swansea University. Together they would work on philosophical matters that eventually become the posthumously published Philosophical Investigations. Wittgenstein thoroughly enjoyed his time in Swansea, and he spent a lot of time walking around the city and along its beaches. He met a variety of fascinating characters, some academic, some proletariat. This play imagines some of those conversations, which cover a variety of issues.Wittgenstein arrives in Swansea and is met by Perkins, a cabbie. He is taken to his digs in Langland Road where he interacts with his landlady Mrs Mann. Wittgenstein spend time on campus and two students, Carwyn and Rebecca, have strong opinions about the great philosopher. The key figure of Rush Rhees, sitting in his office, engages in a dialogue with Wittgenstein. One evening Wittgenstein comes across the dramatist and activist Saunders Lewis. They talk politics and related matters. Wittgenstein lodged at two addresses at Cwmdonkin Terrace from 1944-47. In this scene he argues with Reverend Morgan about religion. In 1947 Wittgenstein's partner came to Swansea and Richards took the famous photograph of Wittgenstein at Brynmill Train Station. Wittgenstein loved to wander the bays and this scene sees him contemplating life at Langland Bay. The final scene captures Wittgenstein at High Street Station as he departs Swansea for the last time.

Reversible America
Rodeo, cattle ranching, and bullfighting converge in the arenas of race, gender, and ethics in Reversible America. In Southwestern California, these sports manifest in spectacular expressions of transcultural interactions that continue to develop through border crossings. Using an interdisciplinary scope, this unique look into the subculture negotiates the paradoxes and connections between the popular American performances, Iberian bullfighting, and Native American hunting methods, along with the relationship between human and non-human beings, and systems of value across borders.
Dancing on My Own Terms
Dancing was a major form of exercise for me during the state-imposed coronavirus shutdown. My favorite genre is Nigerian hip hop. The Afrobeat incorporated into Nigerian hip hop works for my purpose of exercise. I am also influenced by the shared cultural and literary knowledge in the lyrics as an insider, and as I reminisce on the importance and significance of these cultural elements and innuendos, it heightens the sense of belonging in me as a student from Nigeria in a foreign land. Dancing, I move my joints, my waist, and feel my body bounce. The trending Afro hip hop dance tutorials in circulation on the internet also help with the process. Though alone in my room, dancing with and for myself, I am conscious of the gaze of the society on my body. I struggle to push the negative connotations about the dancing female body in the hip hop genre to the back of my mind but needless to say, I am constantly reminded of the place the female body occupies in the spectrum of power relations, generally in the society, and narrowly in hip hop.
Baron of Brown Street
A stage play inspired by true events written by Eric Mansfield.Lenny King, a homeless man living alone in a tent under Akron's Brown Street bridge, becomes an overnight celebrity after a newspaper story details Lenny's kind heart in forgiving three teens who set him on fire and laughed at his pain. (Inspired by true events.)Light-hearted, gritty, and yet dramatically poignant, The Baron of Brown Street turns the tables on those quick to pass judgment based on where someone chooses to lay their head while providing deep insight into the heart of a man torn between continuing his simple life of homeless depression or choosing one last chance at redemption.
Kiss Marry Kill
I'm a monster. You can't marry me. Jay and Paul are both serving life sentences for homophobic murders. Incredibly, they fall in love and seek permission to marry. Inspired by real-life events, Kiss Marry Kill is a provocative new play that reimagines the first same-sex wedding in a UK prison. The original Dante or Die production featured live music from rapper Lady Lykez, and enveloped audiences in the private spaces and conversations of a world rarely seen. Kiss Marry Kill zeroes in on the limits of our compassion, challenging our assumptions and preconceptions around sexuality, and the criminal justice system. This edition was published to coincide with the world premiere Dante or Die tour starting in March 2024.

Yankee Doodle Dandy
Playwright, composer, actor, director, and producer George M. Cohan looms large in musical theater legend. Remembered today for classic tunes like "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "Give My Regards to Broadway," he has been called "the father of musical comedy," and his statue stands in the heart of the New York theater district. Cohan's early twentieth-century shows and songs captured the spirit of an era when staggering social change gave new urgency to efforts to define Americanism. He was an Irish American who had the audacity to represent himself as the Yankee Doodle emblem of the nation, a vaudevillian who had the nerve to unapologetically climb the ranks and package his lower-brow style as Broadway. In Yankee Doodle Dandy, the first book on Cohan in fifty years, author Elizabeth T. Craft situates Cohan as a central figure of his day. Examining his multifaceted contributions and the various sociocultural identities he came to embody, Craft shows how Cohan and his works indelibly shaped the American cultural landscape. Informative and engaging, this book offers rich reading for Broadway musical aficionados as well as scholars of musical theater and American cultural history.

The Blues Brothers
The story of the epic friendship between John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, the golden era of improv, and the making of a comedic film classic that helped shape our popular culture"They're not going to catch us," Dan Aykroyd, as Elwood Blues, tells his brother Jake, played by John Belushi. "We're on a mission from God." So opens the musical action comedy The Blues Brothers, which hit theaters on June 20, 1980. Their scripted mission was to save a local Chicago orphanage. But Aykroyd, who conceived and wrote much of the film, had a greater mission: to honor the then-seemingly forgotten tradition of rhythm and blues, some of whose greatest artists--Aretha Franklin, James Brown, John Lee Hooker, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles--made the film as unforgettable as its wild car chases. Much delayed and vastly over budget, beset by mercurial and oft drugged-out stars, The Blues Brothers opened to outraged reviews. However, in the 44 years since, it has been acknowledged a classic: it has been inducted into the National Film Registry for its cultural significance, even declared a "Catholic classic" by the Church itself, and re-aired thousands of times on television to huge worldwide audiences. It is, undeniably, one of the most significant films of the twentieth century. The story behind any classic is rich; the saga behind The Blues Brothers, as Daniel de Vis矇 reveals, is epic, encompassing the colorful childhoods of Belushi and Aykroyd; the comedic revolution sparked by Harvard's Lampoon and Chicago's Second City; the birth and anecdote-rich, drug-filled early years of Saturday Night Live, where the Blues Brothers were born as an act amidst turmoil and rivalry; and, of course, the indelible behind-the-scenes narrative of how the film was made, scene by memorable scene. Based on original research and dozens of interviews probing the memories of principals from director John Landis and producer Bob Weiss to Aykroyd himself, The Blues Brothers illuminates an American masterpiece while vividly portraying the creative geniuses behind modern comedy.

The Naughty Bits
Between 1934 and 1968, no Hollywood studio could make a movie without the permission of and a seal of approval from the Production Code Administration. The Production Code was Hollywood's official censor. Screenplays, books, plays, costumes and even story ideas and songs had to be okayed by the Code before they could be filmed, and the Code monitored every stage of the production process to ensure compliance. The correspondence between the Code and the studios was confidential, and the memos within the Code office itself were even more so.Well, not any more. The Naughty Bits pores through those files to show how the censors did their job. What was the world prevented from seeing in some of the greatest movies ever made, including Stagecoach, Some Like It Hot, Convention City, Psycho, His Girl Friday and even The Ten Commandments? Here is the sometimes funny, sometimes outrageous, always riveting history of movie censorship on a nitty-gritty level.
A Fine Line Between Stupid and Clever
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER For the first time, director Rob Reiner and cocreators Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer provide the full behind-the-scenes story of the making of the groundbreaking mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap and its upcoming sequel. Since its original release in 1984, This Is Spinal Tap has evolved from a beloved cult film into a cinematic landmark: an all-time comedy classic that pioneered an entire genre, the mockumentary. Now, director Rob Reiner and his cowriters and costars, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, tell the complete story of the movie and its fictitious band--how they met, how Spinal Tap came to be, and how their low-budget indie film took on a life of its own. Years after the movie first came out, the Library of Congress selected This Is Spinal Tap for inclusion in the National Film Registry and Tap went on to play The Royal Albert Hall, Wembley Stadium, and to over 100,000 fans at the Glastonbury Festival in England. Reiner, Guest, McKean, and Shearer provide the backstories to the movie's famous lines--among them "Hello, Cleveland!," "None more black," "You can't dust for vomit," and "These go to eleven"--and to such Tap anthems as "Big Bottom" and "Stonehenge." Featuring never-before-seen photographs, band memorabilia, and personal reminiscences of their enduring creative partnership, A Fine Line Between Stupid and Clever will delight Tap-heads of all ages--just as the long-awaited Spinal Tap sequel is hitting theaters. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! A Fine Line Between Stupid and Clever also comes with a bonus memoir by Reiner's directorial alter ego, Marty DiBergi, in which he interviews Tap band members Nigel Tufnel, David St. Hubbins, and Derek Smalls about their musical journey and their drummers who paid the ultimate sacrifice to the rock gods.

Reappraising Cult Horror Films
Identifies key - and in some cases previously overlooked - cult horror films from around the world and reappraises them by approaching and interrogating them in new ways. New productions in the horror genre occupy a prominent space within the cinematic landscape of the 21st century, but the genre's back catalogue of older films refuses to be consigned to the motion picture graveyard just yet. Interest in older horror films remains high, and an ever-increasing number of these films have enjoyed an afterlife as cult movies thanks to regular film festival screenings, television broadcasts and home video releases. Similarly, academic interest in the horror genre has remained high. The frameworks applied by contributors to the collection include genre studies, narrative theory, socio-political readings, aspects of cultural studies, gendered readings, archival research, fan culture work, interviews with filmmakers, aspects of film historiography, spatial theory and cult film theory. Covering a corpus of films that ranges from recognised cult horror classics such as The Wicker Man, The Shining and Candyman to more obscure films like Daughters of Darkness, The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires, Shivers, Howling III: The Marsupials and Inside, Broughton has curated an international selection of case studies that show the diverse nature of the cult horror subgenre. Be they star-laden, stylish, violent, bizarre or simply little heard-of obscurities, this book offers a multitude of new critical insights into a truly eclectic selection of cult horror films.

Films of Jesus Franco, 1953-1966
With more than 180 films during a career spanning several decades, Jesus Franco (1930-2013) was an extraordinarily prolific and chameleon-like Spanish director, covering virtually every genre from horror to film noir, adventure and erotic, and adapting to all kinds of productions. A one-of-a-kind filmmaker, he was boldly original in the themes, style, and in his idea of cinema. This book examines his life and career between his first short film to the moment he cut his ties with his home country and became an "international" director, with a detailed production history and critical analysis of his films, placing his work within the social and political context of Spanish culture, politics, and cinema. Franco's most critically praised works are covered, namely such cult horror classics as The Awful Dr. Orlof and The Diabolical Dr. Z, as well as his working relationship with Orson Welles, whom he was to direct in a 1964 unfinished adaptation of Treasure Island. Detailed production history and critical analysis of his films are provided, placing his work within the context of Spanish culture, politics, and film industry. The book also includes plenty of never-before-seen bits of information and in-depth discussion of Franco's previously uncovered scripts, essays, and short films, as well as his unmade projects of the period.
Queering Polishness in Polish Theatre Since 2005
Theatre has long been an art form at the centre of public life in Poland. Whether it is the self-professed poet-prophets of the Romantic era, or the dissident theatre makers working under the strictures of state socialism, the art form has played a vital role in the development of Polish culture and politics in the context of shifting foreign occupations. This book explores the relationship between contemporary Polish theatre makers and contemporary notions of Polishness and argues that queer theory, and specifically a Polish appropriation of queer theory, can be a crucial element to better understand the politicality of the contemporary Polish theatre field. It does this by focusing on critical theatre productions which are produced at the margins of the Polish theatre field, a choice which has been made as the field is dominated by traditional drama theatres which reproduce a Polish variation on the Western canon. This makes smaller, atypical, and independent theatre productions all the more significant, as they signify a refusal to continue the traditional role of the Polish theatre field in reproducing the canon of Polish Romanticism. As such, the book argues that contemporary Polish theatre has been marked by a struggle between those building performances and state authorities that see those creations as a threat to their authority.

The Cherry Orchard
The orchard's white, all white. You haven't forgotten, have you, Lyuba? The avenue lined with trees, unfurling like a slender ribbon. And on moonlit nights, it shimmers. You remember, don't you? You haven't forgotten? Can anyone persuade Ranevskaya and her aristocratic household that the world is changing, and they must too? Following internationally acclaimed productions of The Seagull (Belvoir St Theatre, Sydney) and Three Sisters (Young Vic, London), director Benedict Andrews has a reputation as one of the world's leading interpreters of Chekhov. For the Donmar Warehouse he stages the great writer's final play. It's a work that predicted and captured the end of an era, but is timeless in its humanity, prescience, humour and pathos. The Cherry Orchard is Chekhov's masterpiece. This edition was published to coincide with its world premiere at London's Donmar Warehouse in April 2024.
The Power of Play
Canada's LGBTQ+ movement has transformed from a fight for basic rights to a vibrant cultural phenomenon. This shift isn't a sign of complacency. Playful cultural tactics, like festivals, have become powerful tools. These events celebrate identity while fostering a sense of community and resistance. But the movement hasn't abandoned protest. When gains are threatened, LGBTQ+ Canadians mobilize swiftly, showcasing the movement's enduring strength. This blend of cultural pride and direct action demonstrates the power of play in driving social change.
Collage of Korean Dance
This is a photo book of Korean dance. This is made by the immigrants who came to the United States to inherit and spread Korean culture and to share Korean culture with the multicultural American society. All photos in this book are from the Chicago Korean Dance Company's performances, focusing on the first ten years (2009-2019), six grand performances that were held every two years. Pictures of other performances and international performances are included in CKDC history pages. It should be noted that 98 percent of all dance costumes and dance props in the performance are made and imported from Korea.Korean dance is divided into three categories: court dance and folk dances that were passed down for a long time, folk dances that were created with the base of Korean dance movements, and original choreography dances that portray modern issues along with modern costumes. Each of the dances in the book is specified into these three categories, and it is listed in the programs. It should also be noted that Muyong and Chum are used interchangeably in Korean language, and both of these words mean "dance" in English. This book is made to inform the viewers about Korean dance, costumes, accessories, and props and to record the cultural activities of CKDC and Korean immigrants.
Theatres of Value
Explores the value of Shakespeare for theatrical businesspeople and audiences in nineteenth-century New York City.Theatres of Value explores the idea that buying and selling are performative acts and offers a paradigm for deeper study of these acts-"the dramaturgy of value." Modeling this multifaceted approach, the book explores six case studies to show how and why Shakespeare had value for nineteenth-century New Yorkers. In considering William Brown's African Theater, P. T. Barnum's American Museum and Lecture Hall, Fanny Kemble's American reading career, the Booth family brand, the memorial statue of Shakespeare in Central Park, and an 1888 benefit performance of Hamlet to theatrical impresario Lester Wallack, Theatres of Value traces a history of audience engagement with Shakespearean cultural capital and the myriad ways this engagement was leveraged by theatrical businesspeople.

Youth Horror Television and the Question of Fear
Focusing on programs from the 1970s to the early 2000s, this volume explores televised youth horror as a distinctive genre that affords children productive experiences of fear. Led by intrepid teenage investigators and storytellers, series such as Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated and Are You Afraid of the Dark? show how young people can effectively confront the terrifying, alienating, and disruptive aspects of human existence. The contributors analyze how televised youth horror is uniquely positioned to encourage young viewers to interrogate--and often reimagine--constructs of normativity. Approaching the home as a particularly dynamic viewing space for young audiences, this book attests to the power of televised horror as a domain that enables children to explore larger questions about justice, human identity, and the preconceptions of the adult world.
