We the Bacteria
How architecture must learn to coexist with bacterial life, from the authors of the bestselling Are We Human? This provocative book is a manifesto for an alternative architectural philosophy. It treats bacteria as the real architects, construction workers, maintenance crews and inhabitants of buildings. Spanish American architectural historian Beatriz Colomina and New Zealand-born architect Mark Wigley draw on the latest research to rethink the past and possible futures of the built environment, exploring the intimate entanglements of the microbes within bodies and buildings over the last 10,000 years, culminating in the antibiotic philosophy of contemporary architecture. Hostility to bacteria must give way to new forms of hospitality from a more symbiotic architecture that learns from bacteria, embracing them and reconnecting with soil, plants and other species. The main goal of the book is to rethink the very idea of shelter in terms of forms of inclusion rather than prophylactic forms of exclusion.Beatriz Colomina is the founding director of the Media and Modernity program at Princeton University. She has written extensively on questions of architecture, art, sexuality and media. Her books include Sexuality and Space (1992), Privacy and Publicity: Modern Architecture as Mass Media (1994), Domesticity at War (2007), Clip/Stamp/Fold (2010) and Radical Pedagogies (2022).Mark Wigley is a professor and Dean Emeritus at the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. As an architectural theorist and historian, he explores the intersection of architecture, art, philosophy, culture and technology. His publications include Buckminster Fuller Inc.: Architecture in the Age of Radio (2016) and Cutting Matta-Clark: The Anarchitecture Investigation (2018).

Iran Unveiled
Today's Iran: A Legacy of the World's Earliest CivilizationIran today is a remnant of one of the world's first ancient civilizations, which played a significant role in shaping later civilizations. Despite the separation of large parts of its historical territory over time, its current geography remains the custodian of nearly all its rich historical, cultural, and civilizational heritage.Alongside its remarkable literary, artistic, and cultural wealth, Iran, with approximately one percent of the world's population and one percent of the world's landmass, is a land abundant in natural resources, energy, and minerals, ranking fifth globally in total resources. Moreover, despite its vast deserts, which possess their own unique beauty, much of Iran is covered by the lush Hyrcanian, Zagros, and Arasbaran forests, as well as magnificent pastures and fertile plains. Its unparalleled biodiversity extends across land and water, creating an exceptional ecological variety.Undoubtedly, it is this vast diversity of natural and cultural heritage that has enabled Iran to remain resilient and steadfast despite historical, political, and economic challenges. With at least 5,000 years of civilization, Iran's history is divided into three major periods: Ancient History, Classical Antiquity, and the Post-Islamic Era. Throughout many of these periods, particularly during Classical Antiquity, Iran was one of the world's greatest powers in science, economy, and military strength.Iran is the proud inheritor of numerous global firsts, including: The world's first university (Gundeshapur)The first charter of human rights (Cyrus Cylinder)The first constitutional assembly (Mehestan Council)The world's first observatoryThe first modern surgery (Burnt City)The purpose of this book is to explore Iran's nature, culture, and turbulent historical past, providing a readable and engaging resource for all Iranians and Iran enthusiasts worldwide-especially families and young Iranians across the globe.
Architecture and Cultural Continuity
Architecture and Cultural Continuity explores a dynamic way of viewing architecture - arguing that all architecture is best evaluated through active experiences in relation to cultural traditions of community and belonging, space, ritual, and setting. A work in three parts, the book first analyses in-depth the Festival of San Giovanni in Florence, an annual series of celebrations involving the entire city. Tracing its history from its Roman origins via the Renaissance through to contemporary times, this case study is used to explore ideas of continuity and tradition and how these shape and are shaped by architecture and the city. Part 2 gathers theoretical tools from philosophy, anthropology, and performance studies to offer a framework for the appraisal of architecture - whether engaged in festival or simply part of the background to everyday life - as experience rather than form. The final part presents historic and contemporary case studies to explain the theory in practice, from Lord Leighton's House in London to Beit Beirut in Lebanon, and from Salisbury's medieval Chapterhouse to the contemporary Australian Parliament building. Written for architectural theorists, historians, and designers alike, this book will allow the reader to assess architecture in a way that re-addresses aspects of history often obscured by post-enlightenment thinking, and reveals an architecture rooted in cultural traditions better able to contribute to the diverse communities of the future.
Building Modern Scotland
Combining architectural and social history, this open access book tells for the first time the in-depth story of Scotland's new towns. One of the most significant episodes in modern architectural, urban and social history, Scotland's postwar new towns offered new housing, new ways of life and new jobs. Begun between the late 1940s and the late 1960s, the new towns - East Kilbride, Glenrothes, Cumbernauld, Livingston and Irvine - were a key element of the planned Welfare State, attracting international attention and widespread publicity. These were places of architectural innovation, and economic and social change. Building Modern Scotland tells a new history of the new towns, combining architectural and social history to illustrate what was planned, what was built, and how these places were experienced by the communities who lived and worked in them. It positions the new towns at the heart of modern Scottish history, showing how they represented an ambition to make a modern, transformed nation. The book surveys each new town's planning and design before turning to key topics such as housing, family life, work and opportunity, and community. Drawing on archives and oral history, the book will appeal to historians of modern architecture and design as well as readers interested in modern social history. It provides a new account of modern Scotland, its buildings, places and people, and argues that a better understanding of the new towns' history and value should inform present-day decision-making. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

Smart Cities for Inclusive Innovation
Cities that promote inclusion not only ensure greater opportunities for their citizens but often reap large economic benefits. In recent years, smart cities have exploited and used technologies to guarantee a better quality of services and to predictively analyse and provide responses to urban changes in a proactive way. However, it has become clear that some initiatives have made existing inequalities stronger by failing to address the needs of all citizens. Today, more than ever, it is necessary to address inclusiveness in smart cities from the ground up. Sustainable solutions and energy efficient methods have led to cleaner energy, pollution reduction, improvements in the life of citizens, and transformed environments and regulatory structures to be more inclusive. This is creating smarter cities where citizens, inclusivity and sustainability are at the core. Designing a new smart city is much simpler than incorporating new technologies into an already built urban space. This book covers technology advances, innovative concepts, solutions and applications in smart cities, both from engineering and social perspectives. Smart Cities for Inclusive Innovation: Concepts, technologies and solutions is a useful resource for researchers and engineers in smart cities and their associated technologies as well as specialists such as planners, decision-makers and stakeholders in urban communities and local governments, and administrators involved in current and impending smart cities-related activities.
Rafiq Azam
A mid-career monograph for Bangladeshi master architect Rafiq Azam focusing on the urban transformation of Dhaka, with an introduction by renowned architect Kenneth B. Frampton. Acclaimed architect Rafiq Azam (b. 1963) has been instrumental over the course of his storied career in transforming the urban landscape in Bangladesh's capital of Dhaka. Azam's signature style finds harmony between cultural and spiritual traditions, local craftsmanship and materials, and the country's complex natural environment. No design element is too small to be poetically incorporated into his buildings and city planning projects. His attention to light and shadow, bodies of water, indigenous vegetation, and air flow shows the influence of Bengali mysticism. In 1995, Azam founded his own internationally renowned architectural firm, SHATOTTO "Architecture for Green Living," dedicated to creating responsible buildings while educating different community stakeholders to value environmentally conscious innovation and sustainable practices. This groundbreaking volume contains Azam's most significant public and private projects in Dhaka, alongside his other major South Asian projects in Malaysia and Bhutan. Illustrations accompanied by insightful commentary sit alongside an extensive conversation with Azam on decades of design thinking and large-scale, community-focused practice in the "new" Bangladesh.

The Rise of the Neighbourhood in Canada, 1880s-2020s
Neighbourhoods matter now more than ever before. They sustain fewer social connections, but in an era of great social inequality and high levels of immigration, they have become vital as places for homeowner investment and educational opportunity for children. The Rise of the Neighbourhood in Canada, 1880s-2020s traces the changing character and significance of Canadian urban neighbourhoods, city and suburban, since the 1880s.The book highlights patterns in neighbourhood life, particularly noticeable in larger urban areas, which are especially important for the least mobile people: workers, lower income households, immigrants, women, children, and the elderly. It explores how the physical and social characteristics of neighbourhoods affect public health, crime rates, social capital, and job opportunities while shaping the lifelong prospects of children. Analysing long-term trends, the book examines the importance of communications technology in the context of rising inequality and immigration. It shows how, as homeownership rose, neighbourhoods became vital settings for investment, increasingly financialized, reducing affordability. Using examples from all types of neighbourhoods in cities small and large, from St. John's through Montreal and Winnipeg to Victoria, The Rise of the Neighbourhood in Canada argues that the current prominence of neighbourhoods will persist.

In Private
The 1970s is often considered the period that design forgot. In Private sets out to challenge this view, offering a cultural history of domestic interior design in Britain and America over the course of a decade that shaped the contemporary relationship between fashion and interiors. With each chapter dedicated to a different room in the house, this book explores style, design and socio-cultural influence from the sitting room to the sauna, and from the kitchen to the conservatory. Considering the key critical discourses which arise from the style and function of each space, In Private looks at how the public sphere informed the decorating styles, furniture and furnishing of the private home, from shag pile carpets to Swedish duvets. Demonstrating how the cultural environment of the 1970s sparked the ideas, styles and practices that have become common currency in today's interior design, the book examines questions of sensuality, tactility, fashion, fantasy and gender. Illustrated throughout and packed with original research, it provides an insight into 1970s innovation and eclecticism in fashion, textiles and the domestic interior.

Terra 2022
Featuring a global compendium of sites, buildings, urban settlements, and cultural landscapes, this volume combines recent research with practical approaches to conservation of earthen architectural heritage. Earthen architecture is one of the oldest forms of construction and is evidenced around the globe. This volume gathers the research and presentations from Terra 2022: 13th World Congress on Earthen Architectural Heritage, which brought together in Santa Fe, New Mexico, 350 conservation professionals and practitioners from fifty-two countries. Seventy richly illustrated papers, fifty-seven in English and thirteen in Spanish, address a range of conservation issues. Abstracts are provided in both English and Spanish for each paper. Themes covered include advances in research, strategies for archaeological sites, community-based care and decision-making, cultural landscapes, decorated surfaces, education, historic and modern buildings, conservation history, risks and vulnerabilities, and traditional materials and practices. Sections that draw on symposia held at the congress spotlight two recent architectural heritage initiatives: the rehabilitation of an urban settlement by the AlUla Old Town and Oasis Conservation Project in Saudi Arabia, and the conservation and management of eight monumental enclosure complexes at the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks in Ohio.
Designs of Destruction
How architectural monuments survived and historical preservation was reinvented during the destructions of the twentieth century. The twentieth century was highly destructive, but from its landscapes of ruins was born a new architectural type: the cultural monument. In the wake of World War I, an international movement arose which aimed to protect architectural monuments in large numbers, and regardless of style, hoping not only to keep them safe from future conflicts but also to make them worthy of protection from more quotidian forms of destruction. An evolving group--including architects, intellectuals, art historians, archaeologists, curators, and lawyers--grew out of the new diplomacy of the League of Nations. During and after World War II, it became affiliated with the Allied Military Government and was eventually absorbed by the UN as UNESCO. By the 1970s, this organization had begun granting World Heritage status to a global register of significant sites--from buildings to bridges, shrines to city centers, ruins to colossi. Examining key episodes in the history of this preservation effort--including projects for the Parthenon, the Cathedral of St-L繫, the temples of Abu Simbel, and the Bamyian Buddahs --Lucia Allais demonstrates how the group deployed the notion of culture to shape architectural sites, and how architecture in turn shaped the very idea of global culture. Designs of Destruction emphasizes how the technical project of ensuring various buildings' longevity jolted preservation into establishing a transnational set of codes, values, and practices. At the same time, this paradoxically helped integrate technologies of destruction--from bombs to bulldozers--into cultural governance. Designs of Destruction not only offers a fascinating narrative of cultural diplomacy, based on extensive archival findings; it also contributes an important new chapter in the intellectual history of modernity by showing the manifold ways architectural form is charged with concretizing abstract ideas and ideals, even in its destruction.

Landscape Fieldwork
Refocusing on human inhabitants in landscape architecture Landscape architecture is at a crossroads. The ability to draw upon interdisciplinary perspectives and generate insights from the combined vantage points of design, environmental studies, and the social sciences puts it in a prime position to address the most pressing issues of our time, such as climate change and social inequality. Its current reliance on digital and technological solutions, however, has increasingly caused landscape architects to lose sight of the ways in which humans actually use spaces. And while landscapes are designed all over the world, the discipline remains inordinately centered on the Global North. Landscape Fieldwork alters that long-standing paradigm through real-life examples that provide tools for practitioners to engage more deeply with multidimensional, diverse landscapes and the communities that create, live in, and use them.
