Portuguese Houses with History
For almost a decade we had an interior design studio which led us a unique opportunity to discover and visit Portuguese family houses, with stories and beauty that deserved to be portrayed. Since then, time has passed and with the growth of tourism in our country, many of these houses ended up being transformed into hotels, vacation rentals, airbnbs and rural hotels, as it was too expensive to keep them just as family homes. Watching this made us feel the need to make a book about the ones that still resist. Our shared passion for these houses and their unrepeatable identity convinced us that this could be a project where we could work together again, photographing the properties that we still managed to find so that at least their visual memory didn't get lost. We want this book to pay homage to a memory, a Portuguese savoir-faire and taste that is disappearing with the massification of design, objects and furniture. We hope that this book will help raise awareness to what we feel is most valuable about these homes: the notion that this heritage is precious, that it is part of our history and must be preserved.This book pretends to be a homage to Portuguese family houses, with stories and beauty that deserved to be portrayed. Gordon Bunshaft
The works of Gordon Bunshaft, developed while working for the multinational architectural firm SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill), put together a number of concrete and abstract elements that fully reflected the modern movement during the years of its maximum artistic expression. In the early fifties, the Lever House attracted fame and commissions, becoming a paradigm for new modern office buildings projects. The evolution of SOM's design and construction processes generated a wide variety of formal solutions during the 50s. Fundamental to this process, the work organization of the firm was based on three fundamental aspects: modern architecture, American organizational methods and expertise, and development of techniques and industrialized building materials. Towards the sixties, SOM projects started to have more expressive and technically refined structures, which enhanced formal attributes and gained more functions than usual. The triad of SOM--modern architecture, North American organizational methods and the mastery and development of available industrialized construction techniques and materials--fully supported him.Along four decades, his production accompanied technological advances, the state of the art and some cultural and social changes in the US, which are revealed in the presence of materials, construction systems and spatial configurations. Even so, Gordon Bunshaft never abandoned architectural modernity as the formal matrix for his projects.

The Albert and Tina Small Center for Collaborative Design is the outreach arm of the Tulane School of Architecture. The Center works with nonprofit organizations and community-based groups to provide design services to communities who are consistently underserved by the design professions. The work focuses on equitable participation, meaningful outcomes, design excellence, and inclusion as critical parts of the design process. Smallx20 tells the story of the Center's founding and illustrates the Center's approach to design in service to community needs. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, and the ensuing federal levee failure flooded 80% of the city. While the groundwork for Small Center was established before the storm, the Center's early work served to support community needs during the city's recovery. Si la fondation de la Sainte-Chapelle de Paris par Louis IX pour accueillir la couronne depines au milieu du XIIIe siecle est bien connue et si lon sait qua limitation du saint roi, plusieurs princes de France fonderent des chapelles dites saintes entre la fin du Moyen Age et le debut de la Renaissance, lhistoire longue et complexe de ces chapelles est encore mal connue et mal comprise. Il ne sagit pas de nier la possibilite de construire un ideal-type de la Sainte-Chapelle, mais plutot de sinterroger sur lecart entre ce que les documents du passe appellent Sainte-Chapelle, sans prejuger dun sens stable et univoque a travers le temps, et ce que les periodes posterieures et la recherche actuelle peuvent designer sous ce nom. Une Sainte-Chapelle, des Saintes-Chapelles ? Ces contributions cherchent a repondre a cette question en sinterrogeant sur la definition de la notion, sa circulation, ses transformations dans le temps et dans lespace. Colour Schemes in Roman Architecture. Aesthetics, Semantics, and Regional Appropriation
Roman architecture was characterised by a rich palette of colours, achieved through the use of natural coloured stones and painting. Evaluating the use of colour in Roman architecture addresses an important part of the built environment. Unlike black-and-white photographs or line-art reconstruction drawings, architecture was conceived, perceived and experienced in colour. Although such statements are accepted by most archaeologists and architectural historians today, details about functional, chronological, and regional variation in Roman architectural polychromy remain to be discovered. This conference volume is the first book entirely dedicated to the polychromy of architectural orders in the Roman provinces. Its objectives are to present new data on raw materials, painting techniques, and traces of paint on architectural orders, to explore the visual effects for which colour was used on architectural elements and to collate initial observations on the functional, chronological and regional variation of the applied colour scheme in the various areas of the Roman Empire. The volume brings together the contributions of twenty-five archaeologists, ancient historians, art historians and chemists. Although Hertfordshire is one of the smaller English counties, there are numerous attractive historic towns, villages and hamlets. The influence of St Albans Abbey, one of the most powerful monasteries in the country, spread throughout the county, and there is a wealth of other fascinating medieval churches, including St Michael's, St Albans (with Saxon origins), the Norman Hemel Hempstead, and the fourteenth-century Ashwell with its famous plague graffiti. Later periods are also well represented, including two often overlooked seventeenth-century Gothic Survival churches at Buntingford and Oxhey, the important Greek Revival church at Ayot St Lawrence, others from the Victorian period (including Ayot St Peter, which was influential on the Arts and Crafts movement), and St Martin's, Knebworth, by Sir Edwin Lutyens, from just before the First World War. The monuments, stained glass, screens and other furnishings found within the churches are just as rewarding, ranging from a Saxon crucifix to a window from 2013.
